Command & Conquer Generals 2, originally announced at the VGAs as a new retail game by BioWare Victory, will now be released as the first "universe" of a free-to-play service called simply "Command & Conquer."
Command & Conquer will launch next year as a platform for the delivery of new experiences in the strategy franchise, starting with the material originally planned as Generals 2. This move allows "gamers complete access to the cutting-edge visuals, sound and destruction of a full, AAA strategy game – for free," as EA puts it. Future "universes" will include Red Alert and Tiberium.
We'll find out more about this sudden transition, and this new service, at Gamescom. Closed beta access will be given to some fans who sign up at theofficial site.

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, one of the best-received Vita launch games, is now a Steam game, where it'll presumably meet with another warm reception.
The new PC version includes Steam achievements, cloud saves, and leaderboards, and several new, more substantial changes. Those include new minigame levels, higher-resolution graphics, and "new hidden references and bad jokes."
For its first week on Steam, developer Drinkbox Studios has discounted the game by 10%. You too can be Attacked by Mutant Blobs for just $7.19.

EA teases further entries in the franchise to be released through digital platform
EA’s upcoming RTS Command and Conquer: Generals 2 is going free-to-play in the browser.
The game has been renamed Command & Conquer, and will be based completely online through a new digital platform created especially for the franchise.
The game and service is set to launch next year, with EA stating that further entries into the long-standing series could be released outside of the Generals universe.
"We are thrilled about this opportunity to transform Command & Conquer into a premier online experience," said EA VP Jon Van Caneghem.
"For nearly two decades, this franchise has existed as something you buy; now we are creating a destination where our fans will be able to access the entire Command & Conquer universe, starting with Generals and continuing with Red Alert, Tiberium and beyond.

But handheld games consoles are still the most popular electronic devices.
A new report from The NPD Group says 13 per cent of kids aged four-14 now use tablets, compared to just three per cent in 2011, giving the devices the highest usage increase of all electronic devices.
Meanwhile, fixed and portable video games consoles, and digital video cameras also experienced the highest increases. The portable consoles are the most owned devices for the kids, with the average child receiving their first one aged six.
The average household has an average of ten different gadgets, and children are using around five of them, demonstrating how they're becoming ever more tech-savvy.
Russ Crupnick, senior VP, industry analysis, The NPD Group, said: "Kids are using tablets to game, watch movies and TV shows, read books and listen to music-even occasionally for taking pictures - so they have embraced the utility of these devices quite rapidly.
"Older kids also use the tablets for social media and communication, which squarely places these devices at the center for discovery and evangelism of new services and applications, as well as for brands and entertainment of all sorts."

We'll admit to being a little blown away when Microsoft launched the Surface -- it was an impressively polished tablet that we had heard barely a whisper of leading up to the mysterious launch event. But, there was one thing that we were still left wondering: how much would it cost? Now, with Acer getting all in a huff about competition and Microsoft conceding that some OEMs might be a little upset when this thing ships, we might just have an idea for you. According to an inside source, a session was held at Microsoft's recent TechReady15 conference in which all the launch details were laid out. If things go according to the plan detailed then, the Surface for Windows RT tablet will be launching October 26th --no surprise there -- at a compelling price of $199.
That MSRP, almost certainly lower than Microsoft's own cost, would line it up against the Nexus 7 and even the Kindle Fire. It would put Windows 8 on the map in a big way and give a lot of people a lot of reason to try out an operating system that is going to feel rather different than previous incarnations. The question is: will it drive enough sales of media and apps for Microsoft to recoup its loss? Or, will companies like Acer put up enough of a fight in the months between now and October to keep Microsoft from undercutting its own partners? We'll find out soon, dear readers.

Crysis3 tech video highlights the engine behind latest in FPS franchise
Crytek has released a Crysis 3 trailer showing off the powerful new engine behind the latest addition to their best-selling first person shooter franchise.
CryEngine3 is the newest version of a game engine that seemed photo-realistic in its first incarnation, and has gotten a step closer to that lofty goal with a host of new features.
The video shows the remnants of a one-time metropolis overgrown with lush vegetation, a mix that harkens back to the first two games in the series.
In terms of a tech trailer, it seems to cast CryEngine3 as a more flexible developer environment, ready for use in both next and current generation titles: online, offline, or free-to-play.
New features include real-time volumetric fog and cloud shadow pixel-accurate displacement mapping, tessellated vegetation, unlimited particle FX lighting, integrated cloth and vegetation simulation, and perhaps most important of all - "top secret tessellated toad tech".

SimCity will make its way back to Macs as a digital download via Origin.
EA has announced the city-builder's return to Mac at Gamescom 2012, revealing that SimCity will be available in February 2013.
“Whether you owned a Macintosh or a DOS PC, we all have memories of laying down zones and reticulating splines from our youth,” said Lucy Bradshaw, senior vice president and general manager of EA’s Maxis Label.
“To the millions of SimCity fans out there, we’ve been listening and can proudly say that your calls have been answered. SimCity has a long legacy on the Mac and the team at Maxis is ensuring that it will be the deepest, richest and most accessible SimCity game yet.”

When we last left Acer's Iconia Tab A110, it was going to be yet another 7-inch Android 4.0 tablet. No big deal. The proposition just became a little more intriguing now that online shop Ebuyer has posted what might be formal press shots of the A110 sporting a fresh coat of Jelly Bean, making it one of the first third-party Android 4.1 tablets that we've seen. Assuming the gallery isn't just a clever attempt to whip customers into a frenzy, the posting suggests Acer's design will follow the Nexus 7 formula all the way through to the stock interface. About the only differences are that empty home screen and incredibly generic wallpaper. Where it goes awry is the timing: without any hint of a release date, we don't know if a Jelly Bean update would push the A110 beyond its original summer launch target. Any truth to the story, however, can only mean good things for the tablet's larger A210 sibling.

The internet has erupted this afternoon after an eager journalist spotted a listing for Valve’s hugely anticipated Half-Life 3 in the official Gamescom show guide.
T3 reports that the game is included in Gamecom’s PDF guide.
It’s safe to say that Half-Life 3 is amongst the most anticipated releases in the history of the industry. Since the 2007 no-show of Half-Life 2: Episode Three, the fandom has become increasingly hungry for news on the next chapter in Valve’s iconic.
However, Gamescom’s guide with a pretty significant caveat – the show organisers apparently “take no responsibility for the accuracy of the information” adding that it is sourced from, amongst other places “forums and blogs”.
This, clearly, is an unusual approach for an officially published guide and has simply stirred the fanboy nest even harder.
MCV’s prediction? Sorry, but Half-Life 3 is not going to be presented this week.

August 14th, 2012, 14:04 Posted By: wraggster
Valve has announced a major Steam update that will highlight the best user generated content for games on the service.
Every game will have a associated Game Hub that will showcase the most popular screenshots, videos and Steam Workshop items, as well aggregating related news, discussions and comments.
The move underline's Valve's current drive to place Steam users very much at the forefront of its service, and echoes the recently revealed Greenlight initiative which allows players to vote for which games are published on the service.
"The New Steam Community is all about showing off the best content that gamers have created," says Valve's Emily Kent.
"With over 89 million screenshots, videos, Steam Workshop maps, levels, mods, and items, plus news articles and product updates, the community has created an unbelievable wealth of content around their favorite (sic) games."
The Game Hub feature is the first of a series of updates which Valve will announce over the next few days. It's not clear whether the Hub system will also be applied to non-game applications, which Valve announced would be coming to Steam in September.
No date has been confirmed yet, but beta access to Game Hubs will be available "soon" according to the press release.

Red Hat has announced the availability of a preview version of its OpenStack Distribution that would enable it to compete with the likes of Amazon which is considered one of the leaders in infrastructure-as-a-service cloud services. The enterprise Linux maker was a late entrant into the OpenStack world where players like Rackspace, HP and Internap have already made their mark. Red Hat's OpenStack distribution enterprises can build and manage private, public, and hybrid infrastructure-as-a-service clouds. These companies will not only be competing with the likes of Amazon, but will also be competing against themselves to get a bite out of the IaaS cloud. What started as a project has quickly developed into an open source solution that enables organizations to achieve performance, features and greater functionality from their private and/or public clouds. The announcement of OpenStack Foundation acted as a catalyst toward the fast-paced development of the platform.

Battlefield 4 will be set in modern times, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson revealed at GDC Europe today. The game, which was announced with no pomp last month, will have a beta sometime next year, but little else has been revealed. However, with a lag time of six years between Battlefield 2and Battlefield 3, why did the studio go with Battlefield 4 so quickly instead of heading back to Bad Company?
"There's a lot of things inspiring us as to how the franchise will move on. Everything from fans' feedback, to market research and, of course, what we want to build ourselves. It's not just one single thing," said Troedsson, continuing with a hint of sarcasm. "And, yes, I know Battlefield 4 is probably the most creative name we ever could come up with. I can't comment any more on that game because it's all secret."
However, he did go on to say, "We still want to stay in this genre, the modern day as it is. We feel this is a place we can be and continue with the series.Battlefield 4 can live in this space and be very successful."
Hinting, in conclusion, "That doesn't mean there might not be a Bad Company game again in the future."

19 Year old pulls fake currency and BB gun in $3,300 exchange
[h=3]Jagex Game Studios[/h]
A 19 year old boy in the US faces charges of second-degree robbery and grand larceny over an alleged theft of 4.7 billion Runescape coins in which he pulled a BB gun after trying to pay with counterfeit currency.
Humza Bajwa, 19, of Massachusetts, had arranged to pay $3,300 for the 4.7 billion coins from Jonathan Dokler, who arranged for a friend, David Emani to conduct the deal. When the pair first met, Emani noticed that Bajwa had brought fake notes for the exchange and told Dokler to cancel the deal.
Dokler, in touch with the two by phone, wanted to continue the deal, but Emani persuaded him otherwise. Bajwa rearranged the meeting for the next evening.
"He was transferring money from one envelope to another envelope, and I got a glimpse of it and it looked fake," Emani told the New York Post. "I was on the phone with John, and I said, 'Don't do it. It looks fake.' "
When the pair met again the next night, Emani brought a single real $100 bill to disguise the rest of the counterfeit notes, confirming his suspicions. When he challenged Bajwa, he pulled a gun and put it to Emani's head.
"I whispered, 'Take it easy, man. No need for that gun,' " continues Emani. "I couldn't believe I was about to get shot over RuneScape! I was so scared I was about to die."
The gun turned out to be a fake, but it was enough to persuade Emani to ring Dokler and persuade him to complete the transaction. Bajwa is then said to have left, satisfied, leaving the fake notes and the real $100 bill.
CCTV footage lead the police to his door and he has now been arrested and consequently released on bail of $20,000.
Real money trading of Runescape currency is prohibited by UK-based owners Jagex, but is still an issue for the company.

August 13th, 2012, 22:40 Posted By: wraggster
There are few core game genres that have successfully excelled on iOS. Cave shooters are certainly one of them.
For those who are yet to experience ‘the Cave way’, it goes something like this: You fly a 2D ship horizontally or vertically along a level while shooting stuff. Oh, and it shoots back at you. With around a billion bullets.
Hence the name ‘Bullet Hell’, which is used by many to refer to the genre.
And the glorious thing about it is that a genre that relies on pinpoint precision of movement is, it transpires, absolutely ideal for touchscreen devices.
There are compromises, of course. While touchscreen movement is unparalleled, touchscreen button presses are not. While all Cave shmups are repurposed for iOS due to this very reason, some work better than others. And Espgaluda II is the absolute best.
Its iPhone mode, in particular, is absolute genius. But it does require the right approach from the player. Unlimited continues means getting to the end is entirely possible. But the real bread and butter for any Cave player is the 1CC (as in, one credit complete) and getting to end without using any continues is the real meat of any Cave shmup.
The clever implementation of various difficulty modes means that should be possible for those willing to put in some hours. Although once the 1CC is obtained, players will then turn to the high score tables. And that’s when any Cave shooter comes to life.
We won’t even detail how that works as we have to go home some time later this afternoon. But the reason we’re banging on about Espgaluda II is that Cave has an iOS sale on right now. What better time to pop that Bullet Hell cherry?
Cave’s iOS sale prices are as follows. The promotion runs until Friday August 17th:
Espgaluda II – £3.99
Espgaluda II HD – £7.49
Bug Princess – £1.99
Bug Princess 2 – £2.99
Mushihimesama Bug Panic – 69p
Deathsmiles – £4.99
DoDonPachi Resurrection – £3.99
DoDonPachi Resurrection HD – £7.49
DoDonPachi Blissful Death – £1.99

Wildly popular indie game reaches another milestone in just three months
Minecraft’s PC version has surpassed seven million sales worldwide.
That’s according to Danial Kaplan, business developer at Mojang, who tweeted: “More than 7 million minecraft (pc) copies sold!
“Thank you all Minecrafters around the world showing such dedication and support.”
The game’s PC version was quoted to have reached six million users in May, meaning it’s achieved this milestone in three months.
Mojang reported profits of 60 million SEK (£5.7m) in 2011. Last week, its CEO Carl Manneh said that he expects the company to more than double its annual profit this year.

Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed a security breach compromised a large amount of user account data for Battle.net gamers.
Although Blizzard, best known for its PC games Diablo and World of Warcraft, has stressed that the hacked information alone isn’t enough to crack into accounts, it is still recommending that all Battle.net users change their account passwords as soon as possible.
The hackers gained access to a database of ‘cryptographically scrambled’ passwords protected by the SRP protocol, which is a key-based authentication system. Blizzard has stated that anyone trying to crack the passwords would have to decipher each passcode one by one.
Battle.net account holders can log in and change their password by clicking the ‘Account’ link at the top of the page, then selecting ‘Settings’ and ‘Change Password’ from the drop down menu.
As we’ve seen with Wired reporter Mat Honan, a compromised account can snowball across connected devices. So if you have a Battle.net password that is the same as any other accounts, you should probably change them as well.

August 13th, 2012, 21:47 Posted By: wraggster
First person shooter Borderlands 2 aims to be 'bigger, better and more badass' than its predecessor - but a slip up from developer Gearbox Software suggests it might be 'more sexist' too.
In an interview with Eurogamer, the game's lead developer, John Hemingway, talks about a user-friendly skill tree called Best Friends Forever, which will offer perks such as a decreased need for shooting accuracy.
The only problem? He also calls it the 'Girlfriend mode'.
He said: "I want to make, for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree. This is, I love Borderlands and I want to share it with someone, but they suck at first-person shooters. Can we make a skill tree that actually allows them to understand the game and to play the game? That's what our attempt with the Best Friends Forever skill tree is."
Since the interview appeared, the Twitterverse has been set alight with the controversy. Gearbox has been quick to hit back and say there is no such mode. And certainly, officially, it may not appear with that name in the game.
So does it matter if it's just a name they gave the mode in-house? Perhaps not if the name didn't get out.
Hemingway should've stopped as soon as he said 'for the lack of a better term'. Not only do they call it 'Girlfriend mode,' but the development team has exacerbated the situation by admitting in the same breath that it can't find another shorthand phrase to describe the 'easier' skill tree.
It's a real shame, because the 'girls rubbish at games' point of view is lazy and incorrect, and it's going to put off women from playing Borderlands 2. How's the market going to grow whilst this mindset is so obvious and ingrained? Women who play games end up annoyed, women who don't just assume that's why gaming isn't for them.
