The PC version of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition will be released on September 18, Overhaul Games revealed following a countdown. The iOS and Mac versions will be released in September; the Android tablet version is TBA. In addition, the developer has revealed some of the new content that the Enhanced Edition will contain, namely new characters and a new adventure.
The new character in our gallery, Neera, is "a half-elf wild mage slowly coming to terms with her enormous magical potential." Neera brings with her a new "romantic" adventure, a new area and up to four hours of extra gameplay. The Enhanced Edition also includes The Black Pits, which tasks players with engaging in arena combat at the behest of Baeloth, the "mad drow" who built the pits as a brutal form of entertainment.
Pre-orders for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition are now open on the official site. Those who pre-order get the game for $17.99, two bucks off the usual price of $19.99.

Samsung is having slightly better luck in Munich than it is here the US in its ongoing legal battle with Apple. The high court upheld a previous ruling that Cupertino's patent relating to "list scrolling and document translation, scaling, and rotation on a touch-screen display" was invalid. The end result is that the Galaxy Tab 10.1N and Galaxy Nexus will stay on shelves in Germany, while Apple undoubtedly looks for a new avenue of attack against its primary competitor (one we presume will also be of the legal variety). The decision to deny an injunction against the 10.1N comes only two days after the same device passed a similar challenge in Dusseldorf, where the cosmetic design was the focus. Samsung was obviously pleased with the result, saying that it confirmed the company's position that its Android products did not infringe on Apple's IP. Cupertino, on the other hand, remained predictably silent. Of course, this war is far from over, and it's only a matter of time before a new ruling hands one of the two manufacturers another small victory.

Europe's most powerful supercomputer — and the fourth most powerful in the world — has been officially inaugurated. The SuperMUC, ranked fourth in the June TOP500 supercomputing listing, contains 147,456 cores using Intel Xeon 2.7-GHz, 8-core E5-2680 chips. IBM, which built the supercomputer, stated in a recent press release that the supercomputer actually includes more than 155,000 processor cores. It is located at the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (Leibniz Supercomputing Centre) in Garching, Germany, near Munich. According to the TOP500 list, the SuperMUC is the world's most powerful X86-based supercomputer. The Department of Energy's 'Sequoia' supercomputer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., the world's [overall] most powerful, relies on 16-core, 1.6-GHz POWER BQC chips."

Google co-founder Sergey Brin reveals all in a shout out to 'Glass Explorers.'
Project Glass is a swanky piece of AR hardware, which will provide the wearer with maps, video calling, messaging, weather, apps, and other functions.
Another interesting feature is the camera, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin has offered some insight, revealing that the gadget will come equipped with auto picture-capture.
He demonstrated use of the tech while driving in Montana, uploading the result to Google+, citing that the photo was taken without 'distraction or disruption'.
Don't expect to see friends uploading their Glass-captured images to social networks just yet though, the gadgets won't hit the consumer market until 2014.
This is the second recent demo of Project Glass, following the recent video footage captured when users took part in a skydive.

Live language translation tool takes AR to the next level and is far more elegant than Kirk's universal translator.
If you haven't yet been impressed by the practical applications of Project Glass, watch this video.
Produced by Will Powell, he explains the video on his website: "I have created a new project glass inspired video which works on translating realtime conversations and displaying it as subtitles in your glasses.
"I can have a conversation with Elizabeth who speaks Spanish to me and I return with English. I have never learnt Spanish but using the glasses I can have a full conversation."

Last month's Steam hardware survey shows that more and more people are using Valve's digital retail platform on less powerful PCs.
The report shows that the number of Steam users relying on Intel's integrated graphics has risen from 4 per cent to 11 per cent, while the use of dual core processores has risen from 48 per cent to 50 per cent.
DirectX 9 level GPUs now account for nearly 20 per cent of PCs with Steam. The most popular resolution is 1920 x 1080, used by 25 per cent of Steam customers.
Technobabble aside, the survey proves that the share of Steam use that high-end PCs account for has declined.
PCGamesN suggests this is because more people are using Steam on their laptops. It may also indicate a rise in popularity for less demanding games such as Minecraft, Plants Vs Zombies and strategy titles like Civilzation and Total War.
Steam's growth outside of larger, tech-savvy Western markets may also be a contributing factor.

Minecraft creator speaks to benefits of self-publishing
The man behind indie sensation Minecraft has explained why his game is not on Steam, and expressed his concerns that the service is dominating the PC.
This is not the first time Notch has said no to Steam, but a year after his blog post on the subject, some of his reasons are no longer applicable.
"It seems like pretty much all the things we wanted to do are possible on Steam now, which is brilliant!" Notch told PC Gamer.
"Since I made that blog post, Minecraft has kept growing very fast (and it selling faster than ever), which combined with us not being on Steam leads to some potentially interesting strategic positions. I’m not quite sure what those are, but we’re a bit wary to submit Minecraft to Steam without knowing more about what we want to do."
Aside from the business angle, Notch has other, more philosophical reservations when it comes to the PC's leading digital distribution platform.

Studio claims number of illegal copies rose to 99 per cent in some countries
High piracy rates on Android forced Madfinger to make its Dead Trigger app free-to-play, the studio has claimed.
Speaking to PocketGamer, the Shadow Gun developer's marketing manager Anna Porizkova said that piracy rates on the zombie shooter were as high as 80 per cent.
She also claimed that some countries saw that number rise to 99 per cent.
Porizkova added that she understood why many customers were disappointed with the move, having already paid $1 for the game, but hoped users would feel early access to the title was worth the money.
“We absolutely understand that people are angry because they paid for something that is now for free,” she said.

Valve’s head Gabe Newell has called Windows 8 “a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space”.
According to IGN, Newell stated that the release of Windows 8 would mean that the channel would “lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people.”
Apparently, Newell has concerns around the shift to a Windows App Store, which he sees as an example of IT companies following the closed-platform approach favoured by Apple.
As a result, Valve has been working hard to create a version of Steam that can be hosted on a Linux Ubuntu platform, in the belief that one of the only things holding Linux back is the lack of games.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well. It’s a hedging strategy,” said Newell.
“I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space. I think we’ll lose some of the top-tier PCs, and OEMs who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people. If that’s true, then it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality.”

Microsoft has scrapped its free-to-play flight simulation as well as its Kinect title Project Columbia.
"Microsoft Studios is always evaluating its portfolio of products to determine what is best for gamers, families and the company, and this decision was the result of the natural ebb and flow of our portfolio management,” said Microsoft in an official statement.
“Many factors were considered in the difficult decision to stop development on Microsoft Flight and Project Columbia, but we feel it will help us better align with our long-term goals and development plans.”
Microsoft Flight is a free-to-play successor to the old Microsoft Flight Simulator series. The game was supported with numerous post-release DLC packs, including the recentAlaskan Wilderness and Hawaiian Adventure packs.
Project Columbia was touted to be a Kinect-based title to engage young players by pairing books with interactive music and illustrations.
Both games were being developed in Microsoft's Vancouver studio, and although the studio will remain active, 35 jobs have been cut.

An online Swedish retailer has listed the Surface tablet on its online store, with a price tag that dwarfs its rivals such as the new iPad and Asus Transformer.
Webhallen.com has the device listed at around £650 for the 32GB Windows RT model - greatly surpassing the price of the majority of tablets currently available.
Prices for the Surface continue to rise up to the 128GB Windows Pro edition of the device, which is listed at a staggering £1,389.
It's hard to imagine many people will be rushing to spend such an amount on the device, if the prices are accurate.
To make matters worse, it appears that those willing to pay the monstrous price won't have the device's additional keyboard attachment included - with the listing lacking any mention of the peripheral.
Without an official announcement from Microsoft, it's impossible to say whether the prices listed are official or not - but it does offer an interesting view on how the Surface will match up against its closest competitors.
A number of sites have listed their own tentative product pages for the device in recent weeks, often with heavily inflated prices, so prospective buyers will be hoping the prices listed here are way off the mark.

For those keen beans out there who want to get an early taste of Qualcomm's first quad-core chipset, news just came in that starting today BSQUARE, the usual distributor of Qualcomm dev kits, is offering the Snapdragon S4 Pro mobile development platform for a hefty $1,299 (and just for reference, the MSM8960 "Fluid" smartphone MDP is currently sold for $999). Similar to the dual-core "Liquid" slate we tinkered with last year, this new APQ8064-based MDP sports the same 10.1 WXGA display as well as 2GB LPDDR2 RAM, 32GB of storage space and Android Ice Cream Sandwich. But obviously, developers will be able to take advantage of the two extra asynchronous CPU cores plus the new Adreno 320 graphics engine, which is said to pack three to four times the processing capacity of the Adreno 225 in the current top S4 lineup. If you're in no hurry then stay tuned for our hands-on later today.

MSI introduced the GT60 and GT70 notebooks in March, and the latter has already received an upgradeto NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 675M GPU. Now both laptops are taking another step up, this time to the GeForce GTX 680M, NVIDIA's latest GPU, with 4GB of dedicated memory. The refreshed 16-inch GT60 and 17-inch GT70 are available in the US today for $1,899 and $2,599, respectively. Specs remain the same aside from the revved-up GPU; both models come standard with an Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU, a 1,920 x 1,080 display, HDMI output, a Killer E2200 LAN card and three USB 3.0 ports. Half a year has gone by with nary a word nor sighting, but it looks like Fujitsu's svelte Stylistic M532 tabis ready to break cover. Spotted in the FCC's database, the 10.1-inch Android slate bears all the makings of a WiFi-only affair, as it lists support for a/b/g/n protocols, in addition to Bluetooth. From what we've gleaned in the separate filings, the ICS tablet should also come loaded up with a 3,170mAh battery -- a generous cell size to complement its Tegra 3 CPU. Aside from this recent Commission appearance, no official announcement has been made to port this slim fella stateside. But where there's an FCC doc, there's usually a launch not far away. Check out the source below to sort through the usual RF tests or head to the company's own site for more legit shots.

Yesterday, we heard Huawei's 1H 2012 numbers had turned out positive for the most part -- which, of course, were helped in large part by having those rather popular Ascend D1 and P1 up for grabs in the China region. Now, it may or may not be in hopes of a better second half, but the Chinese outfit's just very quietly taken the wraps off of its newest tablet: the MediaPad 7 Lite. As the numerical figure in the moniker would tell, this particular Huawei tablet sports a 7-inch (1280 x 800) form factor, with other features like Mountain View's Ice Cream Sandwich and 3G connectivity (WiFi as well) also said to be included in the light package. Sadly, there's still many deets up in the air, as Huawei hasn't revealed where, or when, we can expect the MediaPad 7 Lite to launch. In the meantime, though, feel free to head over to the company's site, where you'll find some extra eye candy.

Anyone who's ever attempted to configure a new printer from their PC knows the process can be cumbersome at best and Microsoft largely agrees. So, in anticipation of its upcoming OS refresh, Redmond's pulling back the curtain on how it managed to trim the fat from its previous printing architecture. The new system which will underlie both consumer-focused iterations of Windows 8, simply dubbed v4, slims down the 768MB of disk space previously required on Vista for a significantly lighter 184MB (an average) footprint in Windows 8 and adds greater in-box support for more commonly used, contemporary printers -- specifically for Windows RT. The team's also worked hard to keep the experience consistent, separating manufacturer UIs from drivers and paving the way for Metro-style support where necessary. The changes will reportedly ease the load on ARM-based devices and streamline the end user experience with a hassle-free, plug-and-play approach. In the words of team program lead Adrian Lannin, "it just works." Indeed, we'll be sure to find out if it does this October 26th. Hit up the source below to sift through the minutiae of these behind-the-scenes changes.

Just when you thought you knew exactly where you wanted to party and occasionally study electrical engineering, Seton Hall in New Jersey comes along to offer you something better. That's right people, 'free' gadgets: in addition to those Lumia 900 phones it's already promised, the university has also announced a splurge on Samsung Series 7 Slates for all science and honors degree juniors once Windows 8 arrives in the Fall, while those studying other disciplines will have to make do with a Series 5 Ultrabook. The scheme might sound like bribery or a soma to ward off campus activism, but it's actually part of Seton Hall's 15-year-old SHUmobile program, designed to ensure that "everyone has access to the advanced technology they need to succeed" -- and according to the video after the break, that technology just has to be Microsoft Office.

walterbyrd writes with news that Apple has won a preliminary injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 across the European Union, thanks to a decision in a German regional court today. At the same time, the court re-affirmed the denial of an injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, a version of Samsung's 10.1" tablet that was modified to avoid infringing upon the same patents Apple had asserted earlier. The two companies are still fighting on the other side of the Atlantic as well. In a filing today in a San Diego, California court, Apple is claiming $2.5 billion in damages. "Samsung's infringing sales have enabled Samsung to overtake Apple as the largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world. Samsung has reaped billions of dollars in profits and caused Apple to lose hundreds of millions of dollars through its violation of Apple's intellectual property." Samsung, of course, thinks it should owe much less — $0.0049 per unit per patent — if anything.

Microsoft has detailed the extensive changes made to the Windows 8 graphics subsystem and DirectX 11.1. In short, everything in Windows 8 is hardware accelerated, and as a result its text, 2D, and 3D performance will blow Windows 7 away. DirectX 11.1 has also received a significant overhaul that should result in faster and more efficient games and applications. The bulk of the graphics changes in Windows 8 pertain to hardware acceleration for simple, typographically-rich Metro-style apps. In Windows 8, the rendering speed of text and simple shapes has been massively increased across the board: Title and heading text renders 336% faster than Windows 7; Lines render 184% faster; Rectangles render 438% faster; and so on. The rendering of JPEG, PNG, and GIF image files has also been improved in Windows 8, mostly by expanding SIMD usage. In one demo, Windows 8 decodes and renders 64 JPEGs in 4.38 seconds, while Windows 7 performs the same task in 7.28 seconds. Amongst a few changes to DirectX, the most significant feature in DX 11.1 is the new, simplified, unified Direct3D 11.1 API, which finally brings together the many API offshoots that MS has implemented in recent years."
