Download service Steam will be hosting software as well as games from September 5th.
Valve, the firm behind Steam, is set to broaden the type of titles available on the service, adding a range of software from creativity to productivity.
It apparently comes about due to consumer demand: "The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."
Valve says that launch titles will take advantage of Steamworks features including easy installation, auto-updating, and the ability to save work to the Steam Cloud space.
New titles will continue to roll out after September 5th, and developers are also being encouraged to submit new software via new service Steam Greenlight (which enables the community to vote on what it wants to see published).
It's an interesting move - will the site be redesigned to keep software easily accessible and not lost amongst myriad games titles?
And, more importantly perhaps, is this one more nail in the coffin for boxed software at retail? Tell us what you think.

Software corp has been expanding the Surface team since the first tablet's June unveiling.
Microsoft revealed its Surface tablet less than two months ago, and while the 10.6-inch screen device is yet to be released, Mashablesuspects a second Surface could, well, surface.
The software firm's career site currently has 13 Surface-based positions on offer, all of which span different engineering sectors including; hardware, mechanical, thermal design, software development, and electrical.
Some of the posts were made on June 18th, but the most recent openings were listed on August 2nd, suggesting the firm is ramping up its design efforts for a Surface 2.
Microsoft's entry to the tablet market will find rivals in Apple and Amazon, both of which are said to be working on an iPad Mini, and Kindle Fire sequels, respectively.

Red Planet-based update will hit handsets in September.
The whole world is fascinated by the Mars Curiosity Rover, and Rovio is no exception.
In the autumn, the Angry Birds franchise will debut levels set on Mars in Angry Birds Space: Red Planet.
It's a clever tie in by Rovio and one that will get the game even more attention than it is used to. The company even worked with NASA on this promotional video:

There's also a 'like' button available, so players can praise the games that take their fancy. The company is working on a mobile version at the moment, though those seeking app will be redirected to the Apple and Android stores accordingly.

Given their roots -- luxury machines like the original MacBook Air ($1,800) and last year's Samsung Series 9 ($1,649) -- you'd be forgiven if you initially dismissed Ultrabooks as being too extravagant for a college-bound student. Thankfully, though, prices have sunk so low that you can now find a thin, fast, ultraportable laptop for as little as $700. The only problem, perhaps, is a paradox of choice: the selection is already crowded with dozens of contenders, and there are 100-some-odd more models in the pipeline, according to Intel. Fortunately for you, dear readers, we've had the chance to handle or even review many of them, and were able to whittle down the offerings to a handful of promising contenders. Whether you're prepared to spend $750 or $1,400, we have something that'll fit the bill.
[h=2]On the cheap[/h] |
[h=4]Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5[/h]Even with so many Ultrabooks on the market, it's rare to find one with graphics good enough for more serious gaming. That's why we like the M5 notebooks, which can be configured with NVIDIA's new Kepler-series GPUs. The M5 laptops, available with 14- and 15-inch screens, also have 0.81-inch-thick metal frames and narrow bezels -- better build quality, perhaps, than you would have expected for $680. Just keep in mind that for that entry-level price you'll be getting a last-generation Sandy Bridge processor; for an Ivy Bridge chip and discrete graphics, you'll need to pay at least $780.
Key specs: 1366 x 768 resolution, 0.81 inches thick, 500GB hybrid hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE graphics, 4.03 pounds / 5.07 pounds.
Price: From $663 on Amazon |

Lenovo IdeaPad U310
How often do we chide Ultrabooks for having shallow keyboards or flaky trackpads? The U310 won us over with a smooth touchpad and a cushy set of keys, making it supremely comfortable to use. Be warned, though: that lower price point means making do with shorter battery life and more middling performance (SSDs aren't an option).
From $750 on Amazon |
|
Sony VAIO T13
Fair or not, Sony catches a lot of flack for selling overpriced gadgets that rest too much on the company's brand cachet. The T13, though, starts at a reasonable $770. In our review, we praised the metal-clad design and found the performance to be fairly solid, but felt that given its relative heft the keys could've had a bit more travel.
From $760 on Amazon |
[h=2]Mid-range[/h] |
[h=4]
Apple MacBook Air[/h]When Apple refreshed its MacBook lineup recently, it didn't touch the industrial design. And that's a good thing: the Air continues to offer one of the most comfortable keyboard-and-trackpad combos. The chief difference is that both the 11- and 13-inch models pack Ivy Bridge chips, and feature Apple's slimmer MagSafe2 power connector. (You'll need an adapter if you want to use your older power brick.) In our tests, that new chipset provided a nice boost in performance, and the battery life is a bit longer, too. The Air remains our favorite all-around ultraportable, though competitors are starting to best it in categories like display quality and port selection.
Key specs: 1366 x 768 / 1440 x 900 resolution (11-inch / 13-inch), 0.68 inches thick, 64GB to 256GB SSDs, 2.38 pounds / 2.96 pounds.
Price: From $950 on Amazon |

HP Envy Spectre XT
The XT is one of HP's highest-end Ultrabooks and it looks the part with its 0.57-inch-thick metal frame. It also comes loaded with full versions of Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements 10, and is covered by a two-year warranty. As you'd expect, Ivy Bridge CPUs are standard, and you can configure it with up to 256GB of solid-state storage. From $1,000 on HP.com |
|
Dell XPS 14
The big brother to last year'sXPS 13 ushers in some welcome improvements, including longer battery life, a refined trackpad, crisper 1600 x 900 display and discrete NVIDIA graphics. The tradeoffs attendant to that kind of horsepower? A heavier-than-average build, relatively weak disk speeds and a bit of fan noise.
From $1,100 on Dell.com |
[h=2]Money's no object[/h] |
[h=4]Samsung Series 9[/h]One of our favorite Ultrabooks available right now, the Series 9 comes in 13- and 15-inch versions, each thinner than most other ultraportables. Neither version comes cheap, but for the money you get a stunning unibody aluminum design, epic battery life, solid performance and a bright 1600 x 900 display with a glare-free matte finish. So what's not to like? The flat keyboard, perhaps, which offers less travel than competing models. And while the trackpad has benefitted from some driver updates, it could still use some more fine-tuning.
Key specs: 1600 x 900 resolution, 0.5 / 0.58 inches thick, up to 256GB of storage, 2.55 pounds / 3.5 pounds
Price: From $1,300 on Amazon |

HP Envy 14 Spectre
Though it makes for a heavier design, the Spectre's metal-and-glass chassis is one of the most memorable we've seen. It's not all about looks, though: the Spectre also offers a high-res IPS display, comfortable keyboard and generous two-year warranty. Full copies of Photoshop and Premiere Elements are also included.
From $1,400 on HP.com |

ASUS Zenbook Prime UX32VD
We're fans of ASUS' entire line of Zenbook Prime Ultrabooks, thanks to their 1080p IPS displays, lovely build quality and much-improved keyboards. But we're especially intrigued by the 13-inch UX32VD, which adds a discrete NVIDIA GT 620M GPU for some extra graphics might.

Chrome turned 21 last week, and in that new version, Google's made playing Flash videos in its browser even safer... for Windows users, anyway. This latest release puts Adobe's Flash Player plug-in for Windows in a sandbox, much as Chrome 20 did for Linux. This sandbox is "as strong" as Chrome's extremely robust native version -- even in Windows XP -- which means that Flash-borne malware can't hurt Microsofties. Securing the Flash Player plug-in is the result of two years of work, and was made possible by a new plug-in architecture Google co-developed with Adobe. In addition to the security benefits, the architecture has also brought performance improvements by way of a 20 percent decrease in Flash crashes and GPU acceleration for smoother scrolling and faster Flash rendering. And, while the immediate good news is for Windows users, Google has assured us that a port for OS X is in the works, and it hopes to ship that Mac version soon.

They Bleed Pixels, Spooky Squid Games' intense, lo-fi, collaboratively designed, combo-based platform action game, is moving from Xbox to PC, abandoning its planned XBLIG release in favor of Steam.
In the last year, Spooky Squid added more levels than were originally planned, and integrated Steamworks leaderboards, achievements, and cloud saves. There's no release date for the now-PC game. "We're just finishing up sound and squashing a few pesky bugs," said creative director Miguel Sternberg. "It's been a busy year and I think players will really appreciate the additional content and polish."

Valve is set to roll out a line of software titles ranging from "creativity to productivity," hitting Steam on September 5. The software titles will incorporate Steamworks functionality, allowing automatic updating and cloud storage, among other standard Steam features.
This follows a leak on the Steam mobile app in July that listed a slew of software features (pictured above), including photo editing, audio production, design and illustration, accounting, video production and more. Steam recently launched the Source Filmmaker, which allows users to easily create in-game movies.
Software titles will continue to hit Steam after the initial September 5 launch, and developers will be able to submit software ideas to Steam Greenlight, its crowd-sourced idea system.

The GameStop publication Game Informer has boosted its circulation by 37 per cent on last year, making it the third biggest magazine in the United States.
Circulation now stands at 8.2 million copies, pushing it ahead of Better Homes And Gardens, Reader's Digest and Good Housekeeping. Overall American magazine circulations fell by 0.1 per cent for most recent six month period.
"Game Informer's growth in circulation reflects a culmination of the popularity of video games, Game Informer's partnership with the successful GameStop PowerUp Rewards program, and last but not least, a high-in-quality 21-year publication that tries not to miss a beat," associate publisher Rob Borm, told Bloomberg.
The PowerUp Rewards Pro card offers discounts at Gamestop stores, and while usually $14.99, is free to Game Informer subscribers.
"That's been the biggest driver for the increase in subscribers," added Michael Pachter.

MMO failed to gain traction amongst marketers and publishers, claims studio
Gameforge has cancelled development on free-to-play browser title Star Trek: Infinite Space.
The Germany-based publisher was forced into canning work on the MMO, which was to be based on the Deep Space Nine universe, as it had struggled to find a suitable marketing partner for the title.
Plans for the game’s beta had previously been put on hold in November whilst the studio attempted to bring a publishing partner on board, but those efforts appear to have now failed.
"Since Autumn 2011 we've been trying hard to find a publishing partner for Star Trek - Infinite Spacel, unfortunately our efforts did not result in success," read a statement on the game's website.
"Therefore we made the difficult decision to cancel this project completely. Cancelling this project is a very sad thing for us to do as well. Unfortunately sometimes a good concept for a game cannot be realisd according to plan in a successful way."

Report says there will be 172 million subscriptions by 2017
The mobile broadband tablet market will add 150 million new data subscriptions in the next five years.
Strategy Analytics says there will be 172 million tablet broadband subscriptions by 2017 - an increase of 700 per cent.
Susan Welsh di Grimaldo, director Mobile Broadband Opportunities (MBO) at Strategy Analytics, said: "Less than 13 percent of the global tablet installed base will have active mobile broadband service in 2012, yet in the US, both AT&T and Verizon Wireless saw tablets play a key role in net subscriber additions in Q2 this year.
"Service revenues from tablets will be an important incremental growth source for mobile operators, with global tablet service revenues reaching US$15 billion in 2017. Multi-device shared data plans and 4G LTE are key drivers for tablet subscriptions.”
Mobile data traffic from tablets will surge to more than 2.7 million Terrabytes in 2017, representing an 80.4 per cent CAGR from 2012.

Microsoft has confirmed that Internet Explorer 10 will have Do-Not-Track settings enabled by default. IE 10 comes with Windows 8, and will go release candidate for Windows 7 very soon, according to Anne Kohn in a comment in IE's blog. During Windows 8 setup, users who choose the 'Express' option will have DNT on by default, while using the 'Custom' option will give them the chance to change the setting, if they want. IE 10 already has a score of 319 in html5test.com, while MS is trying to position IE as a great browser again. Will this pressure other browsers such as Firefox and Opera to do the same?"When Microsoft began talking about this in May, it touched offquite a debate at W3C about whether browsers should have DNT turned on by default or not.

"Allan Day has written a blog post on the concrete plans for 'GNOME OS' and provided background on the ideas that have motivated those plans ... Day starts by emphasizing that GNOME OS is not an attempt to replace existing distributions. Although the creation of a standalone GNOME OS is part of the plans, the idea is to make that a testing and development platform, and any improvements that come from GNOME OS should 'directly improve what the GNOME project is able to offer distributions.' Many of the drivers for GNOME OS are, Day says, old ideas to improve the development experience, such as automated testing and sandboxed applications, and while the developers could have separate initiatives for each feature, the idea is to work on them as a 'holistic plan' under the moniker 'GNOME OS.'"A few slides provide more context. In the works are stabilizing the platform APIs, improving deployment of applications, making everything automatically testable, and probably the most controversial: "The increasing popularity of mobile and touch devices represents a challenge to existing desktop solutions. This situation is complicated by the emergence of new hybrid devices that combine keyboards, touchpads and touchscreens. During our discussions last week we talked about how existing types of devices – primarily laptops and desktops – have to remain the primary focus for GNOME ... At the same time, we also want to ensure that GNOME remains compatible with new hardware. ... We have set the goal of having a touch-compatible GNOME 3 within a maximum of 18 months."

You don't have to build custom motherboards and source specialty components to build a sleek all-in-one PC. At least not anymore, thanks to Intel's Thin Mini-ITX platform, which it debuted roughly a year ago at Computex. The main board is the same footprint as Mini-ITX (that's a 6.7-inch square), but it calls for a much shallower construction -- with horizontally stacked RAM and a shorter port cluster to keep the whole thing under an inch tall. To maintain its sleek physique, Intel pairs the desktop-class Core processor at the heart with a laptop-style heatsink and fan. It's a pretty interesting standard from Chipzilla, which Tech Report ripped into, peeling back all it's layers like a silicon onion. The layout of all the essential jacks does pose a bit of an issue once the whole thing is set up, but its hard not to be impressed by the elegance and simplicity of the system. To see the whole thing torn down, then reassembled inside the chassis of an LCD panel, hit up the source link.

'Next-gen' Star Wars title, Star Wars 1313 has a "responsibility" to represent violence appropriately due to its advanced graphical capabilities.
That's according to creative director Dominic Robilliard, who told OXM UK he believes the greater the visual fidelity games offer, the more blame they invite for glorifying violence."When you can render characters that look like the ones in our game - and other games - you get to this realism level where you really don't want to encourage that kind of thing," he said in its latest issue.
"Seeing that kind of reaction from gamers... It may well be human nature, but you don't want to put content out there that pushes those buttons."
1313 is billed as a more 'mature' Star Wars outing, though compared to some of the ultra-violence on display at this year's E3 it looked relatively tame in comparison.
The director explains: "We had a lot of questions from people saying: mature Star Wars? Does that mean we're going to see blood and guts all over the place? That's not it at all - it's not what we're shooting for. I don't think that would ever fit in Star Wars, really."
VFX supervisor Kim Libreri summed up. "It's for adults, not for psychopaths."

Id Software has pointed to the notoriously tight-lipped nature of developers Valve and Bethesda Softworks as the way forward for the Doom 4 studio.
Speaking in an interview with Penny Arcade, id's creative director Tim Willits said that after a four year stretch from announcement to release day, the developer's accepted that it showed its latest shooter Rage far too early - and it won't make the same mistake again. In future, he added, the house of Quake and Wolfenstein will be adopting the hush-hush strategy of the aforementioned Half-Life and Skyrim studios.
"One thing we did learn with Rage, one of the things that changed was going from no publisher to working with EA to working with Bethesda, we learned that we showed stuff too damn early," he said.
"I've said in some talks I was so worried that people would not understand the vehicle-based combat so I talked about it first," he added, conceding that eventually the early vehicle footage skewed the public's perception of Rage.
"You know, everyone knows that Valve is working on Half-Life 3, and I think it's fine. It will be cool when people see it, and they'll be excited.
"When we're ready to show stuff, we'll have a plan," Willits concluded, pointing to Skyrim as a model example.
"Everyone knew what Todd Howard was working on," he said of the Elder Scrolls dev, calling its ten month campaign from announce to release "perfect".
"Hopefully we can do that again."
