Counter-Strike: Global Offensive expands upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when the game launched 12 years ago.

CS: CO features new maps, characters, and weapons as well as updated versions of the classic CS content.
Last week’s top ten, compiled every Sunday, is as follows:

Respective titles will boast 3D and puzzler play when launched on GREE's platform this autumn.
Mind Candy's online Moshi Monsters world has been entered by more than 65m children, which led the entertainment firm to expand into books, toys, and more recently mobile apps.
The latter was announced in May via a partnership with Japanese games giant GREE, but now they've revealed the two forthcoming mobile games will be called Moshi Monsters Village and Moshi Monsters: Lost Islands.
Village will have a 3D design, with users able to design their own town based in Pawnberry fields, while Lost Islands is a card collection style game made up of various puzzlers.
Tsuyoshi Tanaka, exec director, GREE and studio head of GREE UK, said: "Having the Moshi Monsters brand within our line-up underlines our commitment to delivering great family friendly content direct to the consumer.
"Moshi Monsters is a hugely popular and successful global brand. We are very honored to be working with the team at Mind Candy to release these titles from the Moshi Monsters stable."

Player created' item lifted from MMO Aion
An axe puportedly designed by the Defence of the Ancients 2 community has been withdrawn by Valve after it was discovered the item had been copied from South Korean MMO Aion.
Valve allows the community to make and design items for sale in some of its games with the Steam Workshop service, and even shares some of the profit with the creator.
Items are only released to consumers after they recieve a certain number of community ratings, but the copycat escaped undetected, and 25,000 players purchased the axe before it was removed.
Valve has banned the item's 'designer', severed axe-related profits from his account, and reimbursed customers who bought the weapon with an alternative bit of digital craftsmanship.
"The vast majority of contributions to the Workshop are incredibly creative and fundamentally original," wrote Valve designer Alden Kroll on the Steam Workshop blog.

As part of the ScummVM Music Enhancement Project, James has released version 1.0 of his enhanced soundtrack for The 7th Guest.
The 7th Guest is James' 5th enhanced soundtrack released so far with another on the horizon. The project enables users of ScummVM who own the original game the ability to experience game MIDI music through high quality modern equipment without any of the cost, which has been in this case edited and recorded on James' Tyros4 keyboard, currently Yamaha's flagship model.
"The 7th Guest revolutionised the way in which we experience video games and the soundtrack originally created by The Fat Man added to the overall atmosphere and splendour" commented James Woodcock, creator of the ScummVM Music Enhancement Project. James continued "With the wonderful soundtrack originally in MIDI format, it was an obvious title to target for enhancement and I appreciated that Trilobyte Games gave their blessing".
James has already released enhanced soundtracks for Simon the Sorcerer, Discworld, Inherit the Earth and more recently Beneath A Steel Sky.
You can download the enhanced soundtrack that is compatible with ScummVM 1.5.0 and watch a video of it in action by visiting James' website below:

We'd originally been tipped that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7 2.0 Student Edition, a $250 bundle which comes with a keyboard dock and USB connector for peripherals, would officially hit Best Buy's shelves around August 19th, but asking nicely might score you one now. According to an email from tipster, Jason (who's also posted details over at Phandroid's forums), the unit was locked inside one of the store's cages and simply asking for a price check let him proceed to checkout with nary an issue (see the photo). Despite only having 8GB of storage, a dual-core 1GHz processor and the same 1024 x 600 screen resolution of its predecessors, the slate is a solid performer -- but unless you're hell-bent on having extras like a rear camera, we'd be remiss not to mention that the Jelly Bean- and Tegra 3-loaded 8GBNexus 7 clocks in at $200 by its lonesome. That said, it may be worth trying your luck at your local Best Buy if you're not so concerned with top-tier specs and okay with Samsung's variety of ICS. You'll find the video unboxing after the break.

Robot Entertainment's delayed Steam edition of Hero Academy will be available today. The developer tells us it should be available "around midday Eastern time."
"The price for the base game on Steam will be $4.99. For that, players will get the core game without ads – the ios base game is free, but is supported by ads – the Council team, the Team Fortress 2 expansion team, which can then be used on iOS devices also and the Council-inspired Ninja Cowl cosmetic item for TF2," said community manager Justin Korthof of Robot to us about the release.
Korthof tells us additional pricing for expansion team packs will be revealed when the game goes live in a few hours.

AMC The Walking Dead Social Game, a Facebook game set in AMC's Walking Dead television universe, which isn't to be confused with Telltale's Walking Dead universe or Image Comics' Walking Dead universe, has entered open beta.
The game (playable here) features all the prerequisite expendable resources of a Facebook game, requiring the player to spend energy to move, attack, heal themselves, etc. Weapons can either be purchased with in-game currency or with in-game currency purchased with real-world dollars, also just like you'd expect.
Some of the zombies out and about in the world have pictures of your Facebook friends floating above them, and upon death will prompt you with the option to post an automated invite on said friend's wall. Now that we think about it, Facebook games and a zombie pandemic actually have a lot in common -- first it happens to someone you know, then someone you love, and then, when all hope is lost, it happens to you.

Have dreams of a promotional Team Fortress 2 'King of the Hill' map set in a Chinese cityscape been keeping you up nights since the free-to-play shooter's launch in 2007? "Well, your oddly specific and scarily prescient dreams have come true," the official TF2 blog has revealed.
Dubbed 'Kong King,' the new map brings Team Fortress 2 into the urban environment created in collaboration with "Sleeping Dogs and community member Valentin Levillain," the blog added.
This is the second cross-promotional effort between Valve's Team Fortress 2and the upcoming United Front Games open-world undercover drama Sleeping Dogs, with pre-order customers of the game getting special Triad-inspired items in TF2.
For more on Sleeping Dogs, check out the replay of our recent live stream of the game with senior producer Jeff O'Connell, and don't forget to giggle at myterrible mouse/keyboard driving skills.

From now until 4 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow afternoon, the CryEngine 3-powered, IllFonic-developed FPS Nexuiz will be free to play for anyone withSteam and a Windows machine capable of running things powered by CryEngine 3. If the game tickles your fancy during that brief period of care/money-free play time, it can be permanently purchased for $2.50 during the next 40 or so hours.
Look, just because we found Nexuiza little bland doesn't mean we're going to stop you from getting a good deal on it. We're not monsters. Well, Gorthax in accounting is a monster, but he doesn't bring it up and neither do we and everyone gets along fine and no one gets eaten.

August 12th, 2012, 01:53 Posted By: wraggster
Freshman year of college may no longer be the gateway to the magical world of laptop ownership, but even if you already have a notebook, who can resist a new machine in the spirit of starting fresh when September rolls around? Whether you're looking for a Core i5 companion to get you through semesters of paper-writing, Facebooking and WoWing, or a super-sleek centerpiece to your bare-bones dorm, there's a vast playing field of machines to choose from. While sifting through the countless options would surely get you back in the academic research frame of mind, it's a daunting task. We're here to take some of the work off your plate with nine solid mainstream laptops that should satisfy every budget.
[h=2]On the cheap[/h] |
[h=4]Sony VAIO E Series[/h]Sony's VAIO E Series is available in 11.6-, 14- and 15.5-inch flavors, all of which sport a new "wrap design" that reminds us of a notebook (the pen and paper kind). Though the E Series got the Ivy Bridge refresh, the $450 11-incher runs an AMD E2-1800 CPU, and the entry-level 14-inch model offers an Intel Pentium chip. All models feature a standard 1,366 x 768 display, though you can trick out the two larger sizes with backlit keyboards.
Key specs: 11.6-inch (1,366 x 768) display, dual-core 1.7GHz AMD E2-1800, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB, 5,400RPM hard drive.
Price: $450 and up on Amazon |

HP Pavilion dv6
Non-Intel CPUs have a happy home in the budget-laptop space, and HP's new dv6 lineup gives AMD some love in the base configuration. For $550, you get a dual-core A6-4400M processor clocked at 2.6GHz, though stepping up to pricier models earns you Ivy Bridge insides. All configurations benefit from Beats Audio, and the understated design with chrome accents is one of our favorites in the Pavilion series.
$550 and up on Amazon |
|
Samsung Series 3
So the Samsung Series 3 didn't get the Ivy Bridge upgrade this time around -- it simply stepped up to Sandy Bridge processors -- but the notebook does have a sleek design with brushed-chrome trim, and it's far from ill-equipped when it comes to other specs. The line is highly customizable, offering Pentium processors all the way up to Core i7, and storage ranges from 320GB up to 1TB.
$450 and up on Amazon |
[h=2]Mid-range[/h] |
[h=4]Toshiba Satellite P850-BT2N22[/h]The P in Toshiba's Satellite P line stands for "premium," and the 15.6-inch P850 does boast a lovely Champagne Silver etched-aluminum design and Harman Kardon audio rather than the SRS technology found on its C and L Series counterparts. This 5.4-pounder includes 6GB of RAM and 640GB of storage, though stepping up to the $800 configuration affords you a 1TB hard drive. Though there's an optical drive on board, you won't find an SD card slot here.
Key specs: 15.6-inch (1,366 x 768) display, dual-core 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-3210M, starting at 6GB of RAM and a 5,400RPM, 640GB hard drive.
Price: $700 at ToshibaDirect |

|
Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition
This special edition lives up to its name with a healthy selection of special extras. Skullcandy headphones come bundled, there's an anodized aluminum lid and Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements are pre-loaded. You get your choice of Core i5 or Core i7 Ivy Bridge CPUs, up to 8GB of RAM and up to a 1TB hard drive.
$900 and up at Dell |
|
Sony VAIO S
Though the VAIO S Series has somewhat of a business pedigree, the 13.3-inch model weighs 3.8 pounds and measures 0.95 inches thick. A third-gen Intel CPU, optional discrete graphics from NVIDIA (for $100 more) and a DVD drive are solid incentives too, as are the seven tasteful color options and up to seven hours of battery life.
$800 and up at Sony |
[h=2]Money's no object[/h] |
[h=4]MacBook Pro (2012)[/h]College campuses are littered with notebooks bearing that famous Apple logo these days, and if you (or your parents -- let's be honest) are well-heeled enough to shell out for the recently updated MacBook Pro, it's a sound investment. Trust fund types might prefer the Retina display model, but the standard Pro, with its Ivy Bridge processor and famously comfortable keyboard and touchpad, is far from a slacker. We do recommend shelling out for an SSD, though.
Key specs: 13-inch (1,280 x 800) display, dual-core Intel Core i5, starting at 4GB of RAM and a 5,400RPM, 500GB hard drive.
Price: $1,140 and up on Amazon |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
|
|
HP Envy 15
We liked the Envy 15 when we reviewed it earlier this year, thanks to its solid display and strong audio experience, and the system's recent step up to Ivy Bridge should only make things better. A backlit keyboard and Beats Audio (complete with a subwoofer) come standard, and though the design borrows heavily from the MacBook Pro, this 5.8-pound laptop is a looker.
$1,100 and up at HP |
|
Samsung Series 7 Chronos (15-inch)
If the Series 7 Gamer seems a bit of a stretch, Sammy has a solid step down in its 7 Series. Now running a Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor, the 15-inch Series 7 Chronos doesn't ditch the generous feature selection of earlier models. You get NVIDIA GeForce GT630M graphics, an optical drive and 1TB of storage.

The Tomb Raider series had to change or risk disappearing altogether, the game’s developers have told MCV.
Head of Crystal Dymanics Darrell Gallagher believes Tomb Raider was facing a crisis as it was no-longer relevant for a modern audience.
So the studio went back to the beginning, using James Bond and Batman as inspiration, to tell a Lara Croft origin story.
“We knew we were facing a problem with a franchise that, at the point of starting development, had been around for 13 years,” he said. “We knew that to stay relevant we had to change.
“We wanted to strip it down, give Lara a personality and watch her grow as a character and make her feel more human and believable. Not many game franchises have run as long as Tomb Raider and we were faced with a challenge that many more titles will eventually have to face.
“We looked at Batman Begins and Casino Royale and we looked at other franchises in other mediums and said, well how have they remained relevant over the years?
“We looked at Batman and Bond and said: ‘Wow, they’ve really done a great job,’ And as other franchises have yet to go through this change, we used them as inspiration.”
Tomb Raider launches on Xbox 360 and PS3 on March 5th, 2013.

The Surface tablets that Microsoft will start selling on 26 October at Microsoft Stores (and in temporary 'holiday stores' in twelve US cities including New York) are only the first of a planned family of Windows devices and Surface 2.0 is already under development. Although Microsoft corporate communications chief Frank Shaw said recently that calling Surface 'our new family of PCs built to be the ultimate stage for Windows' was no more than 'literary licence' and that there was nothing more than the two tablets already announced, the Surface team is 'currently building the next generation' of 'devices that fully express the Windows vision' — according to more than a dozen job adverts posted on the Microsoft Careers site between June and August.

"The final build of Windows 8 has already leaked to torrent sites, which is giving the propellerheads a chance to dig through the code. One revelation will probably not sit well with enterprise customers: you can't bypass the don't-call-it-Metro UI. Normally, you have to boot Windows 8 and when the tiled desktop UI (formerly known as Metro) came up, you had to click on one of the boxes to launch Explorer. Prior builds of Windows 8 allowed the user to create a shortcut so you bypass Metro and go straight to the Explorer desktop. Rafael Rivera, co-author of the forthcoming Windows 8 Secrets, confirmed to Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet that Microsoft does indeed block the boot bypass routine from prior builds. He also believes that Microsoft has blocked the ability for administrators to use Group Policy to allow users to bypass the tiled startup screen. There had been hope that Microsoft would at least relent and let corporate users have a bypass, if only for compatibility's sake.

Personally we find this Ball-Grid Array chip-swap rather horrifying. But if you want to beef up the processor on your 701 Eee PC this is what you’ll need to go through. Not only did [Red Fathom] , but he managed to get the computer to boot up with the new hardware in place.
BGAs are notoriously hard to solder. This hack pulls it off using just a hot air gun. [Red Fathom] heats the board from the underside until the solder melts and he can pluck off the old chip. He then uses a solder braid and iron to remove extra solder from the footprint. After a little cleanup with a cotton swab and some flux he plops in an Intel Pentium M LV 778. It doesn’t look like he added any solder after the cleaning process. Perhaps he’s relying on the small amount left on the tinned pads of the board?
After the break you can see the soldering process and a video of the new processor booting Xandros.

Battle.net, the Blizzard community and matchmaking platform that powers the likes of World Of Warcraft, Starcraft II and Diablo III, has been hacked.
In a post on Blizzard's official website, company president Mike Morhaime advises North American members to change their passwords as a precaution, but says there is no evidence of financial information being compromised and that the details taken in the attack are not enough to give the hackers access to member accounts.
"This week, our security team found an unauthorised and illegal access into our internal network here at Blizzard," Morhaime writes. "We quickly took steps to close off this access and began working with law enforcement and security experts to investigate what happened.
"At this time we've found no evidence that financial information such as credit cards, billing addresses or real names were compromised. Our investigation is ongoing, but so far nothing suggests that these pieces of information have been accessed."
Morhaime admits "cryptographically scrambled" passwords associated with North American member accounts were taken. Players on North American servers will be contacted in the coming days to change their login information, and anyone using their Battle.net password on other sites are advised to change those, too.
"We deeply regret the inconvenience to all of you, and understand you may have questions," Morhaime writes in closing, pointing those seeking further information to a dedicated FAQ. "We take the security of your personal information very seriously, and we are truly sorry that this has happened."

Scary games are, as a rule, not for this author. And as you’ve probably heard, Slender is VERY scary.
The idea stems from a Something Awful thread where users would Photoshop pictures to insert ghostly images lingering in the background. Over time one figure became increasingly common – Slender Man.
It’s on this ghastly fellow that the game Slender is based.
You could say that Slender is an absolutely dreadful experience despite its simplicity. MCV would argue that it’s because of it.
The premise is simple. You’re in a wood. You have a (frankly, crap) torch and you’re looking for eight printed notes scattered around the dark, abandoned level. Your problem is that Slender Man is nearby. And getting ever closer.
As if the setting isn’t terrifying enough by itself, picking up the first note kicks in the music. The menacing slow drumbeat is undoubtedly now the soundtrack of many a player’s nightmares.
The defining moment, though, is the first time you catch a glimpse of Slender Man. In the distance. Standing still. Facing you (not that he has a face).
The screen crackles. The dodgy torch. The music. The slow pace. It’s truly horrifying. And a huge testament to indie dev Parsec Productions that the scariest game ever made is also one of the simplest.
Oh, and it’s one of the free-est, too. You can download it here. If you really feel you must.

New Epic branch working on spin-off to hit iOS franchise
Infinity Blade: Dungeons is being developed by Epic's newly unveiled Impossible Studios.
The iOS title is a touch-based action role-playing game, developed using Unreal Engine 3.
The game was announced earlier this year at GDC.
The game, which is led by studio director Sean Dunn, was conceived at Epic’s Cary branch, and is being developed in collaboration with Epic and Chair at Impossible’s offices in Maryland.
In June, Epic’s co-founder Mark Rein tweeted that Infinity Blade had become its most profitable franchise ever “in terms of man years invested versus revenue”. The franchise has earned over $30m since its first release in December 2010.
