After leaking early and then being sold ahead of schedule at Best Buy, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 7.0Student Edition Bundle -- yes, that's really its full moniker -- now has a confirmed street date. Starting tomorrow, $250 the bundle (which includes a 8GB version of the tablet finished in glossy white, a keyboard dock and USB peripheral connector) will be available for purchase until September 1st at Best Buy, Tiger Direct, Fry's Electronics, Amazon, and Costco. Specs-wise this Android 4.0 slate skinned with TouchWiz isn't exactly up to par with the venerable $200 Nexus 7, but it's still a potential step up from B&N's recently discounted Nook Tablets. Beyond that, it also stands out by packing an IR-blaster, microSD card slot and two cameras -- and lest we forget to mention that this particular GTab itself isnormally $250. Hit up the press release after the break if your interests are piqued enough to consider hitting the halls with this bundle.

Steam's television mode and Steam Greenlight are coming soon
[h=3]Valve[/h]
In an interview with GameTrailers TV, Valve designer Greg Coomer explained that Steam's planned "Big Picture" mode for televisions will hit beta in September.
"In early September you'll be able to hop into a beta, click a button, and see Steam reformatted for your TV and usable with a PC game controller, or a mouse and keyboard if you wanna play that way," said Coomer. "Everything will be there, so you don't have to give up your favorite stuff once you walk from the den to the living room."
Valve founder Gabe Newelll was also on hand to explain that Valve isn't doing its own Steam Box console to run alongside Big Picture mode. Instead, the company hope hardware vendors will big their own hardware and innovation to the table.
"We show [Big Picture to] hardware guys and say, 'Look, if this is a useful tool for you to deliver your hardware into living rooms, that's great.'" said Newell.
Valve also revealed that Steam Greenlight, the service's new indie game vetting system, would be going live on August 30, 2012. The system will allow users to vote on which games get a full release on Steam. Developers can sign up for Greenlight during any point of the game's development and post content for users to vote on.

Developer Bohemia Interactive feared a fan backlash when it announced plans to launch a standalone DayZ game.
DayZ is a free fan-made zombie mod for the PC game ARMA II and has been a huge success, helping the three-year old ARMA II sit atop the Steam charts for several weeks earlier in the summer. It has been downloaded over 1m times.
The title was created by Dean Hall, who now works for ARMA II developer Bohemia Interactive, and he is being tasked with creating a paid-for standalone game.
As a result, Bohemia CEO Marek Spanel told MCV at Gamescom this week that he feared fans would react negatively to the firm charging for the title. But in fact, the company's consumers understood the need to split the product out from ARMA II.
"We feared how they may react," he told MCV.
"Because they might feel it was not fair because they had to pay money for something that was initially free if they owned ARMA II. But we have been really surprised because they have been really positive and really supportive.
"To support DayZ properly, making it a standalone game was the only way ahead. As a mod, we can only really take it as far as we have now. That doesn't mean we are abandoning the mod or that we won't try to support it further, there will be quite a few updates for the mod as well to keep it alive. But there are many limits that we cannot just overcome with it being just a mod. So a standalone game is the only way ahead for us to make a game better.
"As a mod, you have to think about all the other mods as well and ARMA II itself it can become a nightmare. If you change something just to serve DayZ, and then you break another mod. Or you break the campaigns. In ARMA II you have five or six major campaigns now. So this is difficult. We just need a standalone DayZ so we can work on it. That's the reality. And we are really happy that users understand it."
Spanel says there's no release date yet for DayZ, but says he hopes to get something out as soon as possible. And has called on fans to help work on the development.
"We want to do an alpha the sooner the better, and then fast iterations and build. And we want our users to be part of development. That is how we have been doing it on ARMA II for years. The users are in the middle. We really need them. ARMA II would not be what it is if it weren't for them."

The truth about OnLive's demise will take time to emerge – but already a solid picture is being formed.
And at the heart of it are user numbers.
OnLive has never given out detailed user numbers, beyond vague statement of “phenomenal interest” and “growing user bases”. But if the numbers cited by boss Steve Perlman are correct, then the true picture is more grim that anyone had suspected.
"There's no way to exactly estimate how many servers we'd need so we literally bought thousands of them, and all the equipment and networks to go with it," Perlman told employees at a meeting yesterday morning, according to Joystiq. “If you've got 8,000 servers and 1,600 users, how could we ever get to cash flow positive, right?"
This effectively means that OnLive was forced to spend huge amounts on maintaining and renting servers that were not being used. Whether that 1,600 figure refers to subscribers or active users is unknown. But either way it's a disastrously low figure.
"I've been a non-stop fundraising machine," Perlman added. "And I finally got to the point where I just could not bring in enough funding to carry this thing forward.”
An administrator then added that: "All of us, technically, as of today, our jobs have ended – our current jobs with this company.”
The exact scale of the job losses remains unknown, but despite some claims to the contrary last night it certainly sounds like the majority.
"Here's the tough part, and this is the thing I'm very sorry to say: it's just not possible for one individual in a startup – whether it's that old startup or this new startup – to bring in this many people into a company," Perlman admitted. "The people that come on board are the essential people, as needed, to go and accomplish that goal of getting this thing to cash-flow positive.
"The people that are gonna be coming on board here, that will come out of the group. I'm gonna tell you, most of the people will not be coming on board.
"I'm the one that brought you here. I'm the one that ultimately made decisions. And I'm the one that ultimately takes responsibility. So I am sorry, and it didn't end up exactly as we'd hoped.”
So what of this mystery investor? "He's an extraordinary guy and a very accomplished and well known venture capitalist who is very wealthy and believes that OnLive is the entire future of everything.”

Upon examining the PDF Engine behind Google Chrome, Google employees Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwinddiscovered numerous holes. This led them to also test Adobe Reader, which turned up around 60 holes which could crash the PDF reader, 40 of them being potential attack vectors. The duo notified Adobe, who promised fixes, but as of the latest updates(Tuesday of this week) for Windows and Macintosh, 16 of the reported flaws are still present (the Linux version has been ignored). To prove it, Mateusz and Gynvael obfuscated the info and released it, saying the unpatched holes could easily be found. The Google employees therefore recommend that users refrain from opening any PDF documents from external sources in Adobe Reader."

Microsoft has rolled out many new products and many revisions of old products over the past couple of decades. The releases haven't always gone well, as in the case of Windows Vista, but Redmond has managed to ride out the rough patches. However, Windows 8 is an even more dramatic revamp of one of Microsoft's top products than Vista was. At the same time, they're piling their tablet hopes onto Windows 8 as well. Does this make it Microsoft's riskiest bet ever?"Thus the problem facing Microsoft: How to convince Windows users to rush out and buy an upgrade of a perfectly good (and relatively new, at least by Windows standards) operating system? Compounding the issue is the new Windows 8 design, with a Start screen that discards the traditional desktop interface in favor of a bunch of colorful tiles linked to applications. That revamp is supposed to make Windows 8 more touch-screen friendly, and thus optimized for tablet use; but it could turn off consumers who don’t like change, not to mention businesses that shudder at the idea of retraining their workers in new ways of doing things. ... if Surface and the other Windows 8 tablets fail to make an impact on the market, then Microsoft will have lost a major chance at seizing the new paradigm, which is centered on mobility and the cloud. Meanwhile, that same paradigm shift is drifting the center of peoples’ computing lives from desktops and laptops to smartphones and tablets—which puts Windows’ traditional center of strength at long-term risk.

GameStop has been talking about its plans to stream games since acquiring Spawn Labs and Impulse back in early 2011, and next summer the new service will launch. But it won't be available on consoles as originally thought.
"Based on consumer feedback, our success in selling mobile devices, and the imminent launch of new consoles, we have decided to move our technology to a PC-based model," GameStop president Tony Bartel said during a conference call with investors today (via Gamasutra). After running a nationwide private beta, GameStop has decided to offer the service only on PC, tablets and internet-enabled television sets.
Previously, GameStop senior VP Mike Mauler proposed a scenario where users would need to own a retail copy of a particular game they wished to stream from the cloud. That's not set in stone, of course – and that's not to say GameStop won't bring the service to the next generation of consoles, but for the near-future, it appears consoles aren't getting an invite to GameStop's cloud club.

It's taken NVIDIA a mighty long time to squeeze its Kepler GPU into something more affordable than theGTX 670, but it's finally happened -- the mid-range GTX 660 Ti is out and available to purchase for $299 on boards from EVGA, Gigabyte, ASUS and the usual suspects. Some buyers may complain that's $50 more than the 560 Ti, while others will no doubt be reeling off their CVV codes already. For its part, NVIDIA claims the 660 Ti is the "best card per watt ever made" and that it beats even AMD's higher-priced Radeon HD 7950 at 1920 x 1080. Check out the slide deck below for official stats, as well as for examples of what the card can do with its support for DirectX 11 tessellation, PhysX (particularly onBorderlands 2, which you may well find bundled free) and NVIDIA's TXAA anti-aliasing.
We'll wait for independent benchmarks in our review round-up before making any judgment, but in the meantime it's fair to say that this 150-watt card comes fully featured. For a start, it has just as many 28nm CUDA cores as the GTX 670, the same base and GPU Boost clock speeds, the same 2GB of GDDR5 and indeed the same connectivity. The only sacrifice is memory bandwidth: all that computational performance is limited by a 192-bit memory bus, compared to the 256-bit width of the 670. Judging from those specs, we'd expect it to be almost 670-like in performance, and that's going to be pretty impressive.

Microsoft's PR machine has been hard at work over the past few months, trying to explain the numerous improvements Windows 8 has received on the backend. But are there real tangible performance differences compared to Windows 7? TechSpot has grabbed the RTM version of Windows 8, measuring and testing the performance of various aspects of the operating system including: boot up and shutdown times, file copying, encoding, browsing, gaming and some synthetic benchmarks."Lots of other sites are running reviews including: Infoworld, CNET, Computerworld, and Gizmodo, with very mixed opinions.

VIP's sales director explains why the PC is still a popular choice for gamers.
When people think about the video games market, they automatically think of home consoles, such as the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. These are now reaching the peak of their performance and games look dated when compared to their counterparts on the PC. The PC remains a solid platform for gaming, and recent sales figures are continuously showing a upward trend.
According to industry experts NPD Group, the sale of PC-based games
have earned over $80 million within the past year, which is a 230 per cent increase over the previous year. This is one of the reasons behind VIP hosting the Evolution Expo, aimed solely at identifying opportunities for IT resellers in a growing PC gaming market.
PC gaming may have had its heyday back in the ‘90s and early ‘00s, but it is still alive and well today. Sales are spurred on by the release of highly anticipated PC games, such as Diablo III and Battlefield 3 and the price of serviceable gaming PCs dropping,
making PC gaming more accessible to a larger market.
And when you think about it, PC gamers tend to spend more money than most will spend on their consoles, on new graphics cards, monitors, keyboard, speakers and headsets, to gain better graphics and action – there are endless opportunities for IT resellers and ecommerce retailers in this growing marketplace.
Cloud gaming is developing at a fast pace when you see the advantages PC gaming platforms such as Steam or Origin from EA Games can offer.
Nvidia, one of the exhibitors at VIP’s Evolution Expo, recently announced that it’s betting on cloud in a big way with its OnLive and Gaikai-approved GeForce Grid technology – at the Expo you can hear from Nvidia how cloud gaming is signalling the beginning of change within the PC market.
PC games still offer the best bang for your buck, and they’re only going to get better. Why don’t you come and find out more on September 7th at VIP’s Evolution Expo – www.evolution-expo.com

After hackers accessed journalist Mat Honan’s iCloud account, many are wondering ‘how can I make sure this doesn’t happen to me?’
Hackers managed to get into Honan’s iCloud account and wipe data from his MacBook, iPhone and iPad.
A combination of Apple and Amazon’s phone support services coupled with Honan’s lack of secure passwords lead to the hackers being able to achieve this.
We may not have a say in what Apple and Amazon get up to, but we can make sure our passwords are strong.
DON'T RECYCLE
“To safeguard your online accounts, it is best to use a unique, complex passwords for all online accounts,” suggests Kaspersky Lab’s senior regional researcher David Emm.
You may think you’ve tricked everyone with a clever recycling system. A lot of people get into the habit of having a main password, then adding 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on to differentiate between them.
“This practice puts you at serious risk of identity theft,” adds Emm.
PASSWORD MANAGEMENT SERVICES
“Only by using strong, unique passwords across all of our sites can we keep ourselves safe. Clearly though, it’s difficult for most of us to memorise lots of different passwords and writing them down or storing them on your computer is as much of a security risk as using easy-to-remember weak passwords,” comments my1login CEO Mike Newman.
My1login is a highly secure encrypted vault for logins, passwords and pins. A password management service like this enables users to access passwords at anytime from any device with only one login.
The service creates long, complex passwords for each individual account, helping to increase online security.
REMEMBER THE 8 4 RULE
If you don’t want to use a password management service, then follow the ‘8 4 rule’ - 8 characters minimum length, 1 lower case, 1 upper case, 1 number, 1 special character.

Okay, these might not be quite as elegant as, say, that 10-inch, high-res slate coming out of the famed Cupertino labs, but hey, folks working on construction sites (or doing other types of handy work) need to get some actual work done. Here's where Motion Computing comes in. The outfit's just taken the wraps off of its newest rugged tablet PCs, the F5t and C5t -- both of which can be loaded with a choice of an i3, i5 or i7 third-gen Intel CPU, also known as Ivy Bridge. What's more, the company's also letting users pick between a 64 or 128GB solid-state drive, which can then be paired alongside 2 or 4GB of RAM. As you can imagine, this ruggedized duo isn't exactly aimed at something like the Nexus 7 crowd, since the starting price point for the Windows 7 Pro couple starts off at around $2,240 ($2,236, to be exact) depending on configuration. Either way, you can give 'em both a better look after the break, thanks to a press shot gallery courtesy of their creator.

Former Empire: Total War designer Jan van der Crabben warns free-to-play developers to expect a 70 per cent drop in initial registered users.
Crabben, speaking during a keynote at GDC Europe, emphasized that player retention is key for free-to-play titles to find any kind of success.
Crabben went on to explain that while the majority of players will walk away from a f2p title within the first few minutes of registering, those who reach the fourth day of playing will generally continue to stick around.
That’s why he believes titles in the genre must hook players in the first few minutes to have a chance at success. Crabben added that developers should consider 30 per cent retention of its registered base to be a success.
He also complimented World of Warcraft, stating that it perfects what f2p games should strive for with a constant reward system that’s an ideal example of how to retain a user base.
Crabben is currently working as senior game designer at Travian Games, which develops browser-based free-to-play titles including Travianand Imperion.

Three big PC brands are spearheading Ubisoft’s push into free-to-play.
The firm told MCV at Gamescom in Germany that it can use core games brands with freemium models to attract new audiences. The Ghost Recon, Might & Magic and Anno series are first up.
At Gamescom this week, the firm announced that a freemium version of city-builder Anno will launch before the end of the year. Later in 2013 that will be joined by two Might & Magic games, an MMO and an RPG. Lastly, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online has now come out of its closed beta and is open to all players.
“Ubisoft is taking the quality of core games and combining it with the best characteristics of online play,” explained Stephanie Perotti, Ubisoft’s chief operating officer.
She described the firm’s new wave of online games as “titles that will stand out from the crowd”.

Epic Games says that Unreal Engine 4 is increasingly being adopted by major studios who have traditionally used their own tech as the next generation of hardware approaches.
Speaking to us in Cologne on the eve of Gamescom Mike Gamble, Epic's European territory manager, said that the increased scale of next-generation games had several companies thinking about using Epic's hugely popular engine over the proprietary tech they have used in the past.
"What we're seeing now quite rapidly as we approach new generations is that the guys who use proprietary tech are nearly all now thinking - they all have a decision to make," Gamble said. "Do they continue with their proprietary, or do they go with a proven engine?
"And we're seeing a lot of success in that space - a very surprising success, actually. It's nothing we can actually say yet but there's some people who you'd think, 'Oh my god, who would ever have thought they'd abandon their own technology?"
Gamble admits that there have always been clear advantages to developers using their own technology. Bespoke engines can be honed and tweaked to do exactly what you need them to do, and the resulting games will be visually distinct from games made using a widely available engine, as we've seen this generation with UE3.
"Of course, as you go through transitions, it gets more and more expensive to keep upgrading it," he explained. "And you've got to make sure that it's built and documented in such a way that when staff leave, it can continue, and that's a burden.
"At that point you may as well be thinking about buying, to be honest, because you get all of that as part of it."
All of which begs one obvious question: who could he be talking about? Bungie, perhaps, which under Activision's ownership is working on an ambitious project called Destiny and has already shown its willingness to licensing middleware by using Umbra Software's lighting tech? Maybe Avalanche, the Swedish developer of Just Cause 2 which is hard at work on an ambitious open-world game? Could Capcom, clearly aware of the ageing MT Framework's shortcomings, be looking to reduce development overheads by using a thirdparty engine?
We have no idea, of course, but Gamble's suggestion that some of the game industry's most technically capable companies are leaning towards Unreal Engine is an intriguing one. While it's been long accepted that a new generation of console hardware means increased development time and cost, many of UE4's improvements are aimed at making the game creation process more efficient. With that in mind, perhaps it's not so surprising that big names are prepared to make the switch to Epic's engine.
