The 5.5 inch device is launched at IFA 2012 amid great excitement.
The original Galaxy Note was introduced at last year's IFA, and sold far more units than anyone reasonably expected.
With a 5.3-inch screen that sat somewhere between a phone and a tablet, the term "phablet" was coined and many commentators said that the device was simply too big. Ten million sales later, and Samsung has proved the naysayers wrong.
So confident is the company, that the Note II is even bigger, with a 5.5 inch screen.
What else has changed between the Note and Note II?

The parent company of LucasArts has registered trademarks and domain names for something named Star Wars: First Assault. The filings primarily relate to "interactive entertainment software" for computers and mobile phones. An array of related merchandising gubbins is also covered - from pencil sharpeners toparlour games. The filings, spotted by Fusible, back up a list of Star Wars: First Assult domain name registrations filed by LucasFilm at the end of last week.It also mirrors the discovery of mature action adventure Star Wars 1313, whose name was similarly spotted as a trademark registration before its E3 announcement. What could it be? Multiple reports earlier this year suggested a third Battlefront game was still in development - possibly at Legendary: The Box studio Spark Unlimited. The project was first started at TimeSplitters developer Free Radical Design, before LucasArts pulled the plug.Or is it another Star Wars Kinect?

Looks like those leaked slides showing Sony's Xperia-branded tablet were right about pretty much everything. (Well, everything except the price, anyway). The company just formally announced the Xperia Tablet S and, as rumored, it features a Tegra 3 chip, Android 4.0 and up to 64GB of built-in storage. Like last year's Tablet S, it has that distinctive folded-over magazine shape, except this go-round it's made of metal, and measures between .35 and .47 inches thick (the weight, too, has dropped to 1.26 pounds, down from 1.31). Sony also kept the Tablet S' IR emitter, which allows the tablet to double as a universal remote, and this time you can program shortcuts to do things like watch sports. Rounding out the spec sheet, there's a full-size SD slot, a 9.4-inch (1,280 x 800) IPS screen and a 6,000mAh battery promising 10 hours of runtime.
As we mentioned, the tablet will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, but Sony is promising an upgrade to Jelly Bean as soon as it can optimize all its custom apps. And indeed, there are quite a few specialized applications here. For starters, there's a new Watch Now app that allows for live TV-viewing (cable subscription required), with the option to "check into" shows and share comments on Facebook and Twitter. Meanwhile, Sony added a Guest Mode that lets you create custom user profiles, forbidding the use of certain apps -- a handy parental control tool, we say. Naturally, Sony also threw in Music and Video Unlimited, where you can buy content from Sony's vast movie and song catalogs. Finally, the tablet comes with 5GB of space in PlayMemories, Sony's new cloud storage service.
The tablet will be available September 7th, though Sony is accepting pre-orders starting today. It will start at $400 for the 16GB model, with the 32GB going for $500 and the 64GB for $600. And yes, as those leaked slides indicated, there will most certainly be accessories. For starters, there's that optionalSurface-like keyboard we heard about, priced at $100. There's also a three-position stand, with HDMI output and a USB adapter for a charging. That, too, costs $100. Sony is also selling a charging cradle ($40), a plain-Jane stand ($25), a dock speaker ($130) and a carrying case, priced at either $51 or $80, depending on whether or not you get it in leather. We very much expect to get some hands-on time atIFA, so stay tuned for first-hand impressions.

Samsung didn't leave its ATIV introductions to just an ARM tablet and a phone. We first saw them as theSeries 5 and Series 7 tablets, which will likely be their final US names; to recap, though, the newly branded ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro both look to capture some of that Transformer-likeaura by mating an 11.6-inch tablet with a detachable keyboard dock for a laptop experience. Some of Samsung's own Galaxy Note vibe rubs off on them, too -- both carry an S Pen and a bundled S Note app for some on-the-spot writing. They likewise share support for 3G and 4G as well as micro-HDMI and USB, but there's a clear difference depending on what you buy. Going for the regular Smart PC loads in a modest Clover Trail-based Intel Atom processor and a 1,366 x 768 display, but offers a lengthy 13.5-hour battery life, 2GB of RAM, up to a 128GB flash drive, a rear 8-megapixel camera and a 2-megapixel front camera. Slap that "Pro" moniker on the front and you have to drop to eight hours of battery life and a 5-megapixel rear camera, but you'll get a much faster Core i5 processor, a 1080p display, 4GB of RAM and as much as a 256GB SSD. Unlike the ATIV Tab, we do know the Smart PCs will be available in the US on October 26th at $649 for a base Smart PC/Series 5, $749 for a bundle with the keyboard and $1,119 for a Smart PC Pro/Series 7 with a 128GB SSD built-in.

Why SimCity lead producer Kip Katsarelis isn't afraid to back PC gaming
[h=3]EA Maxis[/h]
[h=3]Maxis[/h]maxis.com
Kip Katsarelis, EA Maxis' lead producer on the upcoming SimCity has declared the PC gaming space alive and well, and revealed the challenges of working on such a big brand for a new audience.
"Our engine is definitely portable, it could be operated on many platforms, but that's where our market is," he told GamesIndustry International of PC gaming.
"We're still seeing the PC market is not dead, it's very much alive. Blizzard's shown quite a bit of success with their recent Diablo launch, The Sims is highly successful, so there's a market there, we've got an audience there that wants games on that platform, and we are still a PC house and will continue to be so."
He said that didn't rule out different versions of the upcoming game appearing on other platforms, and cited SimCity Social and SimCity Deluxe on iOS as examples that it could work for different devices.
Kip Katsarelis
"I can see us on many platforms, there's definitely an appetite for Sim City, it's one of those games that everybody can relate to, they all live somewhere!"
And it isn't just the devices that have changed since the last true SimCity was released on PC in 2003, said Katsarelis.
"Not only has gaming changed, there is that whole generation who may be aware of SimCity, and maybe they've played the iPhone version of it, but they haven't really experience that true experience on the PC. So we came out with SimCity Social, there's CityVille too, there's a whole new generation of city planners that would probably love to play our game."
Katsarelis was cagey about life beyond SimCity for Maxis, but explained that the Glassbox Engine, the foundation to all the advances made in the new game, was an investment for the future.
"It's a simulation engine capable of doing many things," he promised.
"Internally when we bring people in we give them Glassbox and let them go make their own games. People have made simulation wineries, one guy made a honey bee farm, so there's a lot you can do with it."

Konami gains ground in the social space, as the puzzle title is one of the top 10 social games on Facebook
[h=3]Konami Digital Entertainment[/h]
Konami Digital Entertainment has announced that its jigsaw puzzle title on Facebook, Puzzle Chasers, has achieved 1 million monthly active users.
The company noted that "since its launch nearly two months ago, Puzzle Chasers has steadily increased in MAUs and continues to see substantial growth."
The free-to-play title is now one of the top ten leading social games on Facebook, and Konami said it's adding more jigsaw puzzles for players each week. There are currently more than 100 jigsaws available in the game.

Cloud gaming has taken a significant step into the present thanks to a new initiative from Japanese publisher Square Enix.
Its new portal, Core Online, allows gamers to play some its titles for free in proper HD through their web browser. It has launched with playable versions of Hitman: Blood Money, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Mini Ninjas.
It’s compatible with Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. The tech behind it is provided by Danish studio Hapti.co.
Standard features such as game saves and achievements are offered and are saved in the cloud. Furthermore, players can launch a game from any level they choose.
The service is being monetised via video advertising, which can be skipped is users purchase individual levels or entire games.
Tomb Raider: Underworld and Gyromancer will arrive on the service shortly.
"Square Enix is at the forefront of experimentation of new business and services models in the game industry," Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada stated. "Through our Core Online technology service, users can access our content easily through the browser."
Offering its back-catalogue titles in this manner is interesting, but the real test of the model will be if Square Enix chooses to offer its new console and PC releases via Core Online at the same time as they launch on consoles and PC.
It would be a brave move to offer games that on the one hand are available for £30-£40 on other platform for free via browser. It would also test the true value that consumers put on convenience, as well as their confidence in emerging cloud technologies.

It looks like hackers already have their sights set on NCSoft's new MMO, Guild Wars 2.
An increasing number of players are reporting receiving email notifications for a password change request made on their account that wasn't done by them.Possibly the targets of hacking or phishing attempts, some have taken to Twitter to tell the developer directly that they're receiving these emails daily.
NCSoft is aware, and has issued a warning urging players to ignore the emails. "If you have been emailed regarding a reset request for your password, but you haven't requested it, as always please be ever vigilant when it comes to emails sent to you in regard to your game account," said NCSoft in a statement.
"If you didn't request the email, do not click the link, just ignore it," it adds.
NCSoft appears to have its work cut out for it today, as players are also reporting lag spikes, which it says its "working on" fixing, it's taken down player-to-player mail "for maintenance", and the forums are also offline at the time of writing.

The Creative Assembly today announced that its iOS game Total War Battles: Shogun is available for PC and Mac in revised form via Steam.
"It's a really good fit on PC," senior artist Nick Farley tells us. "We were initially sceptical, but the thing about Unity, and the actual game design, meant that it actually worked incredibly well. We widened the aspect ratio, started playing and thought, 'Hang on this is actually really good!'"
In the transition, the turn-based strategy title has gained not only widescreen presentation that shows more of the terrain at once but also a number of "high-end" PC graphical effects - including anti-aliasing, enhanced shadows and bloom - to compliment the distinctive, chunky art style.
"We've tweaked quite a few things," explains lead designer Renaud Charpentier. "Obviously, the controls are different, so the tutorial is different, and the game content is slightly different too - we've upped the difficulty in some spots."
The game also features Steamworks-specific features such as achievements and leaderboards, while players will gain free access to the Sendai Clan for Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall Of The Samurai.
"It's not a port, it's really a re-imagining," asserts Charpentier. "We wanted to make it the best experience it could be on the PC; if it hadn't have been that good, we probably wouldn't have released it, but it turned out surprisingly well. It's my preferred version so far, and we're now looking at other formats."

Direct port allows tools maker to get top performance out of UE3 on Windows
Unreal Engine 3 is to support Microsoft’s upcoming operating system Windows 8.
Epic and Nvidia demonstrated the engine running on Windows 8 and Windows RT during Asus’ press conference at the IFA 2012 electronics trade show in Berlin.
A live, real-time demonstration of Epic’s Epic Citadel app, already released for iOS and Flash, was shown on an Asus Vivo Tab RT – formerly known as Tablet 600.
“The Unreal Engine 3-powered Epic Citadel demonstration for Windows RT tablets implements our full DirectX 9 pipeline, with shaders and materials, all running beautifully on Tegra 3,” said Epic Games VP Mark Rein.
“By porting the full engine as opposed to a modified mobile version, Nvidia and Epic have made it easy for UE3 developers around the world to bring their best content to Windows RT, Windows 8, and Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor. Windows RT code is available to licensees from Epic now and we’re excited to see the great games they develop with it.”

Klint Finley discusses Miguel de Icaza's thoughts on how OS X killed Linux on the desktop: 'de Icaza says the desktop wars were already lost to OS X by the time the latest shakeups started happening. And he thinks the real reason Linux lost is that developers started defecting to OS X because the developers behind the toolkits used to build graphical Linux applications didn’t do a good enough job ensuring backward compatibility between different versions of their APIs. "For many years, we broke people’s code," he says. "OS X did a much better job of ensuring backward compatibility."' This, he says, led developers to use OS X as a desktop for server programming. It didn't help that development was 'shifting to the web,' with the need for native applications on the decline

August 29th, 2012, 15:36 Posted By: wraggster
The latest content patch for Blizzard's massively-popular MMO has landed on live servers ahead of the game's upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion, which is set for release on September 25th.
As with previous expansions, the patch introduces a whole host of new features into the World of Warcraft franchise, whilst changing and removing others.
Most notably, all of the game's ten playable classes have received a slew of changes, some more extensively than others.
The game's talent system has also undergone major changes for the second expansion in a row, as it has been completely reworked ahead of the Mists of Pandaria expansion to offers players a simpler, more streamlined experience.
There has also been a number of 'quality of life' changes, many of which are features veteran players of the game have been requesting for a long time.
Features such as AOE looting and account-wide mounts and achievements have long been celebrated in other MMO titles and it would appear Blizzard has listened to its die-hard fans by including these within its latest patch.
Whilst becoming the most popular MMO title to date, the franchise has seen subscriber numbers fall in recent months as players migrate to other free-to-play titles.
A drop in player numbers is not uncommon for the franchise however, which regularly acknowledges a decrease in active subscribers towards the end of expansions and the build-up to new ones as players grow tired of running the same end-game content repeatedly.
With today's major content patch and the addition of new features and changes, Blizzard will be hoping that many of its former fans will make their return to Azeroth in time for its Mists of Pandaria expansion.

August 29th, 2012, 15:35 Posted By: wraggster
Activision Blizzard has taken the unusual step of shutting down access to MMO World of Warcraft in Iran.
The firm announced the move in a statement on its forum, saying:
“United States trade restrictions and economic sanction laws prohibit Blizzard from doing business with residents of certain nations, including Iran. Several of you have seen and cited the text in the Terms of Use which relates to these government-imposed sanctions.
“This week, Blizzard tightened up its procedures to ensure compliance with these laws, and players connecting from the affected nations are restricted from access to Blizzard games and services.
“This also prevents us from providing any refunds, credits, transfers, or other service options to accounts in these countries.”
Iranian players already had to jump through several virtual hoops to access the game, using VPNs, but now even that loophole has gone. Gamers had been complaining of connection problems for several weeks, leading Blizzard to make the statement above to reveal it had indeed taken action.
The game has seen a new patch today in advance of new expansion Mists of Pandaria being released on September 25th.

Security experts suggest disabling Java software in web browsers following a discovery of a flaw that can be used to spread malware.
Internet security firm FireEye has discovered a new Java zero-day vulnerability, which is being used against systems by hackers. The company warns that until Oracle provides an update, most Java users online will be at risk.
“A successful exploit attempt can result in a dropper (Dropper.MsPMs) getting installed on infected systems,” reads FireEye’s report.
“Dropper.MsPMs further talks to its own CnC domain hello.icon.pk which is currently resolving to an IP address 223.25.233.244 located in Singapore.”
Atif Mushtaq of FireEye has said that a number of hacked websites were being used to exploit and install malware onto Windows machines, although Apple Macs could also be targeted.
Java 6 is installed by default on Macs, which is unaffected by the flaw, but if users have decided to upgrade to Java 7 they could be at risk.
At the time of writing there is no date announced for an emergency update patch and Oracle’s Java blog has not been updated since August 23rd.

Images for a canned Crytek game called 'Redemption' have been released.
The images below were outed via the onlineportfolio of the game's art director Eric Cochonneau (via NeoGAF), who was in charge of "defining the visual style/overall look & feel for the game".The CryEngine-powered title looks to have been set in a run-down rural area in (or at least influenced by) locales in Slovenia.
The images show 'visual benchmarks' and artwork for the male that would have been the main character, a 'companion' in the form of a little girl and various enemies.
First word of the title emerged in July last year via the LinkedIn profile of a Crytek gameplay programmer, which revealed that the developer had cancelled work on a third person shooter titled Redemption.
