Veteran game writers Erik Wolpaw and Tim Schafer believe titles that push player-driven experiences such as Minecraft and DayZ are the future of the general gaming medium.
Speaking at a panel in Seattle over the weekend (and passed on by Kotaku), the pair waxed poetic on what the two titles had accomplished without any trace of a driving narrative; bemoaning their own fate as game story writers in the process.
“Can you have an authored story in that situation? It gets tough. I look at stories coming out of Minecraft or something like DayZ, and honestly it makes me just despair,” Wolpaw said. “If I had any guts or honor, I’d leave the industry. It seems like it’s the promise of games. It’s like, ‘I have full agency. Total, total agency.’”
After assuring the room that he was kidding, Wolpaw made it clear he was kidding about the part about leaving the industry, adding that there will always be a place for narrative-driven games–just don't expect it to be as central as it has been.
“At some point, you’re going to go into the kinda ‘artisan cheese-maker’ model. Like Tim. You’re going to be making these games that directly appeal to a [specific audience]. It may not be one of these 20 million dollar massive productions."
Double Fine's boss was inclined to agree.
“I think [player-driven experience] is maybe the promise of games. But not everybody wants the same thing from games. There are definitely people who like something carefully crafted for them, cheese or games,” Schafer said.
While Minecraft has been around longer, thus posting gaudier numbers than DayZ, both have absolutely exploded onto the scene running on the super fuel of player word-of-mouth and viral YouTube clips.

Techland, the studio responsible for Dead Island, has announced a new game currently entitled Project Hell.
The company's blog explains over several posts that the title is a spinoff of Dead Island originating as an 'internal weapon mod' made by a Techland staffer. Thoughts of DayZ immediately sweep in.
The game is further explained as a first-person hack and slash game taking place in a dark fantasy setting, with the studio adding that the mod turned standalone provides 'proof that chopping monsters frozen by magic spells using two-handed swords is brutally fun and addictive.'
“Our main goal is to make a game we can all enjoy playing so don’t expect unicorns and fairies – we prefer breaking through hordes of undead minions only to slaughter their devilish and loathsome masters in a bloody boss-fight.”
Well I should say so. Though unless those magical creatures are undead, I presume most wouldn't expect them running about in a Techland title.
No other relevant info was mentioned regarding Project Hell beyond the fact that the company has a small team working full-time on it.

[h=2]Developer, frustrated with a lack of innovation in the hardware space, posts job listing for industrial designer.[/h]
Valve has posted a job advert on its website for an industrial designer, the listing revealing that the developer intends to enter the hardware creation space.
"We're frustrated by the lack of innovation in the computer hardware space though, so we're jumping in," reads the role description.
"Even basic input, the keyboard and mouse, haven't really changed in any meaningful way over the years. There's a real void in the marketplace, and opportunities to create compelling user experiences are being overlooked."
While the role will likely further fuel speculation on the Steam Console, the mention of input devices makes Valve's "wearable computing" research a more likely candidate for any kind of product to emerge from in the near future.
Of course, it could equally be neither avenue. The listing reiterates Valve's position on innovation and iteration, so the company may simply be toying with more general ideas and looking for someone to come on board in order to set a direction.
"At Valve, our design process really gets going once products are in customers’ hands," the listing continues. Our best work is the result of an ongoing dialog with customers.
"Through years of shipping software as a service through Steam, our digital distribution platform, this has become fundamental to the way we create great products.
"With an engaged community of millions of users, what will you ship? What will you try, and what will you learn through doing so?"

Rovio has announced that its Angry Birds sequel will be from the perspective of the pigs.
Last week PCR reported on a teaser trailer released by Rovio, and many people suspected it meant one of two things – a new game based around the pigs, or a TV show/film.
We were right about the pigs, as today Rovio announced that Bad Piggies will be released on iOS, Android, PC and Mac on September 27th.
"There's a lot of empathy towards the loveable enemies from theAngry Birds games, and we've been constantly asked: what about the pigs' side of the story?" said Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said in a press release. "Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes."
The new game sees the pigs stranded on a desert island where they have to build vehicles and contraptions to make their way to the bird eggs they seem to love so much.

Mozilla is getting its mobile OS marketplace ready for launch in 2013.
In images leaked to Engadget, it seems that the mobile Firefox OS Marketplace is going in a different direction to rivals like the Amazon Appstore.
The screenshots show a minimalist store focused on individual categories rather than pushing row after row of highlighted apps.
There's doesn't appear to be anything particularly revolutionary about the marketplace so far, and there are only free apps on offer in these early images, but its a sign that Mozilla is getting close to completing its OS for a launch in 2013.

Mozilla has been seeding Firefox OS to eager developers for some time. However, we've largely been denied a peek at how the developer's own take on a mobile app store will play out on an actual device. Some of that picture just filled out thanks to some images of the mobile Firefox Marketplace that have landed in Engadget's hands. From what we've seen of the current store, it's a significant break from the top-level storefront we saw back in the Boot to Gecko days, not to mention Mozilla Marketplace on the desktop. The deeper exploration shows a minimalist store that's focused on quickly delving into individual categories rather than an abundance of highlighted apps. We're not seeing any startling revelations -- there's only free apps visible in these early images, for example -- but the gallery is proof that Mozilla is well on its way to fleshing out the core of its OS for a launch next year. Let's just hope that the rest of the software moves at a similarly quick pace.

It's tough to ignore that the Zune era at Microsoft is quickly winding to a close. That doesn't mean you'll necessarily be out of options for syncing a Windows Phone's contents by the time the Zune desktop app fades away, however. A tip to The Verge has shown a companion app for Windows 8 users that will reportedly load the first time a Windows Phone 8 device syncs up, giving a fully Metro-friendly place to transfer any media. Windows 7 would get its own parallel, just in case some of us aren't willing or able to upgrade our PCs in concert. The replacement desktop apps could be available at about the same time as the Windows Phone 8 launch, if the claims are at all accurate -- which might leave less than two monthsbefore one more vestige of Microsoft's MP3 player days goes away.

In a little less than two weeks, Half Life fans will have an opportunity to relive Valve's original 1998 title Half Life, albeit reborn and modified using the company's Source engine. The ambitious third-party project is called Black Mesa (previously known as Black Mesa: Source) and it's been in development for eight years. Black Mesa will deliver Half Life as you've never seen it before. It will have all new graphics, maps, a new soundtrack, updated voice acting, support for multi-core processors, hardware accelerated facial animation, and other goodies."

Steam's Greenlight service allows anyone to upload a game idea for community vetting, no matter what stage of production it's in – including "not real." This is an issue Valve predicted, and it has started taking measures to ban games that are obviously fake, such as anything called "Half-Life 3," and those that are patently offensive, such as "Best WTC Plane Simulator."
The only way Greenlight will succeed in its intended purpose is if its users take it seriously, and unfortunately for Steam, "the users" are "the internet." We'll keep an eye on Greenlight's progress once the initial hubbub dies down.
This is why absolute freedom is a terrible idea, people. The rabble can't be trusted with such a liberated, unchecked service, and let's be honest, most of them need to be kept on a short government-dispersed leash. That in mind, check out our new game on Steam Greenlight, Freedom Sucks: Revenge of the Plutocrats.

Relax, Gabe Newell. If you buy a new Windows 8 Pro PC and discover that you really do detest the OSthat much, you may be able to switch back to an older version -- either Windows 7 or Vista, but not near-death XP -- under the same OEM license. Will many folks want to do that? Probably not, and in any case these so-called downgrade rights are actually only helpful in specific circumstances and they don't come with boxed retail versions of the software. The main practical benefit (albeit still a niche one) is that a manufacturer could technically offer a Windows 7 disc in the box with a new Windows 8 machine and give customers a choice of OS. Alternatively, the manufacturer could install Windows 7 by default (effectively a factory downgrade) and supply Windows 8 Pro installation media so that customers can upgrade for free when they feel good 'n ready. At some point, of course, staring at a redundant UI-switching button is going to grate.

While its successor - Windows 8 - is set for release next month, Windows 7 has taken the crown as the world's most used operating system.
Figures released by web tracking company Net Applications for the month of August puts Windows 7 at the top of the pile with a market share of 42.76 per cent, whilst XP trails with its 42.5 per cent share.
The seemingly forever-dominant Windows XP has suffered steady monthly decline throughout the past year as its newer counterpart has experienced significant growth.

Treyarch has released the minimum specs required to play Black Ops 2 on your PC, and it looks like Windows XP is out.
The Call of Duty community forum has posted everything you need to know about running Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for the PC.The minimum specs required are as follows, and Treyarch promises that they "have tested extensively on a variety of hardware and we are very confident in the performance even at the minimum specs."
- OS: Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7
- CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E8200 2.66 GHz or AMD Phenom X3 8750 2.4 GHz
- Memory: 2GB for 32-bit OS or 4GB for 64-bit OS
- Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 8800GT 512 MB or ATI Radeon HD 3870 512 MB
If you're still running your machine on Windows XP looks like you'll have to upgrade if you want to play this one.
Black Ops 2 uses the same engine as Black Ops, but Treyarch has made a number of improvements "including performance optimizations, enhanced graphics, and proprietary anti-cheat technology."
Treyarch boasts improvement on the way "the engine handles multiple threads," as well as the move from DX9 to DX11. "The DX11 API is leaner than DX9 and requires less CPU time to do the same amount of work."
More "quality vs performance" options have been added to further "customise your experience to either run faster or to satisfy your taste in eye candy."
You can get your hands on Black Ops 2 this November.

Black Mesa, a fan-made Half-Life remake that began development in 2004, will see its first public release on September 14. According to a post on the game's official forums, the launch won't be of the entire game, but will include the team's "re-envisioning of Half-Life all the way up to Lambda Core," which constitutes about eight to ten hours of gameplay.
Black Mesa is a "total conversion" Half-Life 2 mod that uses the Source engine in order to tell the story of the esteemed 1997 first-person shooter by Valve,Half-Life. No launch date has been announced for the full version of the PC-only remake.

Valve has issued one-week bans to Steam users who soured the launch last week of indie game initiative Steam Greenlight by posting fake projects.
As we reported on Friday, the launch of Greenlight - which lets developers submit their games for possible release on Steam, with the community voting for the projects in which they are most interested - didn't go quite as planned.
In addition to fake entries for real games like Mass Effect 3, Half-Life 3 and Battlefield 3, some entries pushed the boundaries of taste. One, spotted by Eurogamer, was a 9/11-themed game calledBest WTC Plane Simulator.
While Valve has been commendably quick to act on these early problems, the fake entries show no sign of stopping. At the time of writing the very first result on the Greenlight page is Team Fortress 2, the Valve-developed multiplayer shooter which has, of course, been on Steam for years.
As we suggested on Friday, the danger here to Valve is that asking the community to help it overcome a major problem - identifying Steam-worthy games from the thousands of potential candidates - it has in fact created extra work for itself. Where once it struggled to find the best games from the thousands of submissions it receives, now it has to sort through the same number in order to find and remove the fakes.

After teasing in April that a launch would happen "soon," Freebird Games' To the Moon is officially hitting Steam on September 7.
To the Moon has been on our radar since last year, when it made our 2011 Best of the Rest roundup. Back then it was available on the developer's site and onDesura, but it was absent on Steam, a service with a wider audience, higher profile and where a game of To the Moon's caliber truly belonged. To the Moonwill be available in English, French and German, and likely Italian and Korean, Freebird's Kan Gao says.
Freebird is working on another episode of To the Moon, featuring the same doctors invading another dying person's memories in the attempt to make their patient's greatest wish come true, mentally, at least.
In April, Gao said To the Moon will be free on Steam to those who purchased it previously, and that it wouldn't include Steamworks, since it's such a short game anyway. Gao confirms that To the Moon won't use Steamworks for achievements or saves, but "it's possible that a new form of cloud saves will be used."
Those who bought To the Moon from Freebird's site, and only from Freebird's site, will get a Steam version for free. This will be on a request basis, since Gao has to manually email each person with a free code. He'll announce an email account for retrieving free codes once it's all set up.
