The long awaited Source engine remake of the Valve's original Half Life has finally been released. The initial release only includes the story up until Xen, but the developers say they'll be adding the rest of the story, along with an online multiplayer Deathmatch mode, soon. The game is available to download for free, and only requires players to install the Source SDK (included with all Source games, or a free download). The highly anticipated release has also caused a huge amount of traffic for any servers hosting the files, with GameFront, GameUpdates, and Black Mesa's own CDN brought down within minutes of the release. The project has also been approved by Steam's Greenlight program, and will hopefully be available through Steam soon, though no timeframe has been given.

"Intel for the first time demonstrated the Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) docking specification using an Ultrabook, which was able to achieve 7Gbps performance, ten times the fastest Wi-Fi networks based on the IEEE 802.11n standard. The WiGig medium access control (MAC) and physical (PHY) control specification operates in the unlicensed 60GHz frequency band, which has more spectrum available than the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands used by existing Wi-Fi products. According to Ali Sadri, chairman of the WiGig Alliance, the specification also supports wireless implementations of HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces, as well as the High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) scheme used to protect digital content transmitted over those interfaces. It scales to allow transmission of both compressed and uncompressed video."

More than 300 students to develop Windows 8 games in 48 hours
Microsoft has begun its world record attempt at the largest development game jam in a single location.
In association with Train2Game, students will spend 48 hours creating ‘Metro’ style games for windows 8 using Visual Studio development tools made specifically for the OS.
The even is taking place at the University of Bedfordshire and Microsoft’s target is to attract more than 300 participants.
Successfuly completed games may be become available through the Windows Store upon the release of Windows 8. The event will be adjudicated by representatives from the Guiness Book of World Records.
Industry figures set to attend the even and provide support to students include Rebellion founder Jason Kingsley, Ubisoft’s Craig Lawson, Microsoft Xbox’s Scott Henson and Tiga director of business education interaction Carsten Maple.

Intel has stated that it will not provide support for Linux operating systems on its forthcoming Clover Trail processors – including Android.
According to the Inquirer, Intel has confirmed that the dual core chip was designed and optimised to work with the Windows 8 operating system, indicating that the chip giant is hedging its bets on Microsoft.
This is perhaps an unsurprising devlpment given that Apple is increasingly reliant on it’s proprietary ‘A’ chips, which are based on the ARM architecture.
Officially however, Intel’s reasoning for the lack of Linux support is due to the fact that Clover Trail makes extensive use of P-states and C-states (used to control idle state and frequency respectively) presumably to improve power-performance, and while Windows 8 has kernel level support for this, Linux apparently doesn’t.
However, with forecasts for the tablet OS market predicting a 40/60 split between Android and iOS with less than ten per cent remaining to ‘other’ it may be that these chips see a limited release.

Online games publisher NCsoft has announced the western release of martial arts-based MMO Blade & Soul.
The game, created by Korean developer Team Bloodlust, had already launched in Korea and China this year but the publisher has yet to announce a confirmed release window for its release in the west.
"Blade & Soul brings MMO and RPG gaming communities an online world rich in Asian martial arts, a theme that has traditionally been limited to fighting games," said the publisher.
"Once the game launches in the West, payers will have the ability to experience the flowing nature of action martial arts that they have come to love, but will experience it in a modern format blended together with deep story lines and an epic online world populated by millions."
The game features signature moves made popular by classic martial arts films House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It also features character design by Hyung-tae Kim, who is known for his work on the Magna Carta and War of Genesis series.
Korea's open beta test in 2011 saw 150,000 players jump in on the action for the 48 hour beta and after launch continues to rank highly in Korea's PC cafés.

Publisher Jagex wants to protect players' investment in the MMO
Runescape publisher Jagex has strengthened the security of its popular MMO with a new Jagex Account Guardian system.
JAG is free and will allow players to add trusted devices to their account. Logging in on an unregistered device will require extra validation from the player before they can access their account.
"Ensuring the integrity and security of our valued community's information has always been a top priority for us, this recent update serves to strengthen the number of other innovative countermeasures we have developed over the past years" said CEO Mark Gerhard.
"Unfortunately a lot of people tend to use the same username and password on other websites, many of these are not well managed from a security standpoint and end up becoming compromised, others are simply phishing websites intended to steal player credentials, sadly the industry also has a very long list of high profile games publishers that have been hacked resulting sensitive customer account information being in the public domain."
He added it was the responsibility of Jagex to protect the investment, of both time and money, made by players.
Guild Wars II's recent troubles with hacking should act as a cautionary tale to publishers of online titles, and to users who repeat passwords across different website.

"We're looking forward to bringing an already hugely successful experience to a brand new console audience and we can't wait for the existing Terraria fan base to experience all-new content."
The announcement also contained word that the PC version has sold 1.6m copies to date.
"I can't say how excited I am to finally have Terraria come to Xbox 360 and PlayStation3," said Andrew Spinks, the creator of Terraria, "To see it come so far is a complete shock, especially after such humble beginnings. It's always been my dream to have as many people as possible know and enjoy Terraria as much as I have, and this is another big step in that direction."

Ubisoft hopes to add titles from other publishers to its newly-launched UPlay app in future.
The service currently only sells digital versions of Ubi’s own PC titles, but could be expanded to rival the likes of EA’s Origin and Steam.
“We remain open to opportunities,” Ubisoft’s Stephanie Perotti told MCV during last week's Digital Days showcase in Paris.
“Right now, we’re starting the service with our own games, but as we go forward, we plan to potentially add other titles.”
UPlay first went live in 2009, and centred around an Achievement-like points system that allowed users to unlock DLC and other extras across all of Ubisoft’s titles.
Last month, it was revamped so that gamers can download games directly from Ubisoft via a new app. It has also added social features such as a friends list and chat system.
The move drew instant comparisons with established download platforms such as Steam and EA’s Origin, but Ubisoft promises that UPlay will offer customers much more.
“The plan for UPlay goes beyond digital distribution,” said Perotti.
“We continue to evolve the service across all platforms, including PC, console and mobile. The more Ubisoft games you play, the more rewards you can get, as well as several online services that players would expect.”

Just when you thought Q1 next year was busy enough, EA has announced yet another promising new title for March 2013.
Fuse is a new IP from the developers of Resistance and Ratchet and Clank, Insomniac. It is the studio's first multi-platform release, with its previous games exclusive to PlayStation platforms. The game is a four-player co-op action game, where players can switch between characters.
It joins a raft of EA games coming out in Q1 next year, including Crysis 3, Sim City, Dead Space 3 and Army of Two: Devil's Cartel. Other big name brands set for Q1 includes Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Tomb Raider, BioShock: Infinite, Devil May Cry, Gears of War: Judgment, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and Star Trek.
Insomniac CEO Ted Price said: "Fuse demonstrates what Insomniac does best: outlandish and gruesome weapons design, over-the-top action and a touch of humor. We're especially excited to see how players utilize lethal teamwork by combining their Fuse weapons to stop a deadly arms race."

Former Capcom producer and Comcept CEO Keiji Inafune has revealed that he is working on a new zombie game titled Yaiba.
The designer announced the project via a press release which promises that it will contain not only the walking dead, but ninjas, robots and action - examples of which you can see in the teaser trailer below.
A year and a half has passed after becoming independent, and I have been fortunate enough to announce several projects along the way," Inafune writes.
"I have announced three consumer titles and three social game titles. I have given speeches in various seminars, panels, universities and schools. I have published three books. I am still aggressively challenging myself in various arenas.
"But I asked myself, 'Have I covered all everything?' It felt like something is missing; something people expect from me the most. Everywhere I go, people ask: 'Are you working on it? When is it coming?' The expectation seems higher in the west. The expectation is clear. It’s for my next zombie game."
There are currently no further details as yet on when we can expect to see more of Comcept's violent cel-shaded project, but official images, along with details on which platforms the game will be released on and what that date will be, are expected soon.

Free iOS version of hit football app downloaded more than one million times, 30x more than on Android
Not making New Star Soccer free-to-play on Android was a big mistake given its breakout success on iOS, developer Simon Read has told Develop.
Speaking in a newly published interview, Read revealed that the iOS version of NSS5 had been downloaded more than one million times, whilst the paid-for Android edition - which costs £1.99 - had been bought just 40,000 times.
Whilst the iOS version is free to download, he said going free-to-play resulted in 430,000 users purchasing the career mode for 69p.
Close to 150,000 also bought other in-app purchases in the game price between 69p and as much as £9.99, meaning more than half of the games users had paid to play the title.
He said that having experimented with the different pay models, and although recognises some of the obvious difference between the userbase on iOS and Android, he would implement free-to-play in all of his future titles.

September 12th, 2012, 23:42 Posted By: wraggster
Intel chief product officer David Perimutter has taken to the stage at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco to unveil the firm's fourth generation Intel Core processor family, which is based on 'Haswell' microarchitecture.
He said that the new company's new low-power processors, starting with the fourth gen line-up available next year, will be able to inspire 'more innovative Ultrabook, convertible and tablet designs'.
Perimutter explained that Intel had reduced the platform idle power of its 4th generation Intel Core processor family based on the next-generation 'Haswell' microarchitecture by more than 20 times over the 2nd generation, while delivering outstanding performance and responsiveness.
The firm is also looking to add even lower-power processors based on the same microarchitecture to its roadmap starting in 2013.
This is all part of Intel's focus to drive power consumption down whilst chasing longer battery life and lighter, more mobile designs, without losing out on performance.
"The 4th generation Intel Core processor family and our new line of low-power processors will usher in an era of unprecedented innovation in mobile computing," Perlmutter said. "Our focus to deliver even lower power with the great performance that our processors are known for is as fundamentally significant as when we shifted our development focus beyond sheer processor speed in 2001. As a result, you'll see our customers delivering sleek and cool convertible designs, as well as radical breakthrough experiences across a growing spectrum of mobile devices."
When the company's 22nm 4th generation Intel Core processor family comes to the Ultrabook and other PCs in 2013, it will bring Intel HD graphics support, new instructions for faster encryption and performance, new hardware-based security features and low-power processor sub-states to enable longer battery life.
The new low-power chips will broaden the company's mobile roadmap, initially operating at about 10 watts to enable thinner, lighter Ultrabook, convertible and tablet designs with better performance and battery life.
Perlmutter brought Windows 8 into the mix as well at IDF 2012, noting that Intel Atom- and Intel Core-based tablets and convertibles will deliver a range of new features from enhanced media capabilities, security built for enterprise vertical market solutions, and support for the breadth of applications written for Intel processors, thus retaining the software investment of IT and consumers.
He commented: "We believe Windows 8 on Intel architecture will deliver the best experience, performance and compatibility across computing platforms."

Mark Zuckerberg admits, Facebook backed the wrong horse.
In Mark Zuckerberg's first public interview since Facebook's IPO, the CEO said that going all-in on HTML 5 for its mobile offering was the company's biggest error.
Facebook was one of the first big companies to make the move to HTML 5, not just for its mobile web, but also its iOS and Android apps.
However at TechCrunch Disrupt, Zuck said: "The biggest mistake we made as a company was betting too much on HTML5 as opposed to native. It just wasn’t ready."
Facebook went with HTML 5 on the basis that it would be easier to develop for multiple platforms and different screen sizes, delivering an experience similar to that of a native app. However, reality bit hard when it transpired that stability and speed were not up to par.
Zuckerberg says that now, Facebook is focused on improving the native mobile experience on iOS, as well as delivering a native app for Android.
During the same conference, Zuckerberg also made it clear once again that talk of a Facebook phone is internet rumour and little else.
He said: "Let’s say we build a phone. We’re not, but if we did, we could maybe get 10 to 20 million people to use it … It doesn’t move the needle for us.
“The strategy we have is different from every other tech company [like Apple] that’s building their own hardware system — we’re going in the opposite direction.
“We want to build a system, which is as deeply as possible integrated into every major device people want to use.”
He continued: “It’s easy for people to underestimate how good mobile is for us. We’ve transitioned, and now we’re a mobile company.”
