GameSamba announced today that the closed beta test for JollyGrim, a card-based strategy and role-playing game, is now live. Players may obtain keys from several partner websites, or register at www.jollygrim.com
Set in a world where fairy tales come alive, players enroll as students at the JollyGrimAcademy and wage battles with other players and NPCs using the cards they collect. Unlike other card games, the battles in JollyGrim take place in real time, not in turns.
JollyGrim combines card collecting with tactical role-playing and real-time strategy gameplay. Each card is treated as a "unit" on the field and features Attack and Defend stats on all four sides, making position and strategy an important aspect of the game. In addition, each card had Health points as well as a cooldown time, so players must learn to defend and block. The cards feature a variety of characters from fairy tales, myths and legends, plus some original ones as well.
JollyGrim is the first free-to-play game that combines a rich single player experience with a full online multiplayer mode. Although the game features story-based episodic campaigns for players to hone their skills and build their decks, the real action is in the multiplayer combat, with a variety of play modes including 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3. As players level up, they can unlock additional gameplay features, strategies and bonuses.

oymax, leading online game developer and publisher widely known for anime-centric Digimon Masters and veteran title Silkroad Online, today announces its first major Knight Age Online update not one month after its commercial release. The free-to-play 3D fantasy MMORPG with a unique riding-action gameplay strives to keep content fresh and forthcoming. Knight Age is open to all, and players can join now through Joymax’s official Knight Age website at http://www.joymax.com/knightage/.
One of the new additions is the new boss pupae (pets). Pupae (plural form of pupa) are a central part of the Knight Age experience and these trusty pets come in a multitude of shapes and sizes, each with their own abilities. Different breeds of pupa each have their own strengths and weaknesses based on their elemental affinity. Now, players can strengthen their pool of allies with the newest line of boss pupae. Boss pupa, as the name implies, is dropped exclusively by boss monsters and looks just like them. The best boss pupa has the smallest drop rate, so these pets are exclusive to the most lucky or dedicated Knights. Collecting, raising, and combining together these pets to raise the ultimate companion is one of the biggest goals of all players.
Starting September 25th, players will be able to challenge Mongoose, Hagen, and Belford to have a chance to receive their boss pupae. Mongoose is a cute cuddly, six eyed and six legged monster just waiting for a hug; Hagen is a skull-faced boss whose miniature version retains identical detail; Belford is a winged demon whose arms are made from molten lava. These pupae will have some of the best stats in game, thus the player will have an easier time completing quest going forward.
This major update is the dessert of the thriving Facebook community.
The decision to make pupae a priority came from a poll, where pupae collecting were voted as one of the top activities players loved doing. You too can shape the game by joining fellow knights athttp://www.facebook.com/officialknightage. The Facebook is also bursting with news and tips, along with daily interaction with GMs and players.

Arcane Legends, the upcoming swords-and-sorcery, action-adventure title from mobile MMO leader Spacetime Studios, delivers a new and meaningful pet system that significantly deepens the game’s combat mechanics and character development.
In the world of Arlor, the setting for Arcane Legends, players will collect a stable full of magical and ferocious pets to aid in their adventures. These powerful companions are not just cosmetic collectibles or a trivial side game. Each pet fills a crucial role by engaging in combat, performing various actions based on their skill sets and granting a unique bonus. Pets also increase in power as a player progresses through the game.
Players need to weigh the merits of each pet’s combat abilities and bonuses to determine which one fits their play style. Companions do anything from attacking enemies to party support like buffing allies and gathering loot. For instance, dragon pets soar around his master, swoop down on enemies and blast them with arcane fire-balls while providing fire-protection.
There will be approximately 40 pets with a wide variety of behaviors and skills at launch. The Spacetime team plans to introduce a steady stream of additional pets in future expansions similar to their live update activities in the other Legends games.
"The inclusion of a meaningful and fully interactive pet system is a major step for the mobile MMO genre,” said Gary Gattis, CEO, Spacetime Studios. “We set out to create an emotional relationship with a significant gameplay mechanic. In Arcane Legends, pets are a major aspect of the character’s identity, growth and capabilities.”
The previous Legends titles - fantasy Pocket Legends, sci-fi Star Legends and horror Dark Legends - have been downloaded more than nine million times, making it the world’s largest cross-platform mobile/desktop MMO franchise.

SG Interactive, a leading North American free-to-play massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game publisher, today announced the launch of Grand Chase: Rebirth, the fifth season for the company’s popular anime-inspired brawler MMO. The first of several major content updates stretching to the end of the year, Grand Chase: Rebirth debuts three newly revamped and highly-detailed character models, introducing a fourth skill for each character job and a streamlined user interface to ease in creating of a new Knight, item selection and dungeon searches.
Gamers entering the game will see the first steps of Grand Chase’s epic transformation, starting with fan-favorite character Elesis, Lire and Arme. Grand Chase players will be greeted with a more detailed and refined look for the three playable characters, thanks to an increased pixel-count, and all-new facial expressions, injecting even more personality to these anime-inspired characters. For long-time gamer and players working towards endgame, a new fourth skill is also available for Elesis, Lire and Arme. Additionally, the in-game hybrid attack pool/mana pool play made popular by Asin’s fighting mechanic is now available for all of Grand Chase’s playable characters.
“For the last four years, our players have been very vocal on what they wanted to see in its coming update,” said Sunny Kim, producer of Grand Chase for SG Interactive. “With the launch of Rebirth, gamers can see advancements in three of the most popular characters, both visually and in gameplay.”
“While I can’t tell you about everything that’s coming with Grand Chase: Rebirth, I can say that these updates included at our launch are just the tip of the iceberg,” Kim added.
Along with the character updates, the Grand Chase team has gone through the entire new-player experience, vastly improving and streamlining the existing user and dungeon interface. The previous screen resolution has been increased to 1024x786, allowing for a richer palette and larger play area. Much of the new-character creation process has been optimized with graphical icons, allowing players to instantly identify the characters, gear and dungeons available to them, and what’s needed to unlock what’s not currently available. The updated dungeon interface assist players in finding the battles, and more importantly the gear they want, in order to level and be properly equipped for the challenges that lay ahead.

Many studios, especially larger studios, prefer to share nothing publicly, rather than an unfinished game. Concept art and pre-rendered representations are staple marketing methods when you want to say something, but nothing at the same time. Presumably there is a risk in showing a game publicly, too early. Misinterpretation and consumer fatigue tend to be the primary concerns. As with many developers seeking crowd funding, PixelFoundry takes a different approach to their development, they believe exposure and transparency is key to their chances for success.
“At EA we always closely guarded our work; leaks were a big deal and a very serious faux pas,” explains PixelFoundry creative lead and co-founder Jerry Phaneuf. “Marketing was a large part of our project and mostly we were encouraged to stay out of it. Though it's understandable; in a company that size, you can't have everyone sharing whatever bits they think are good whenever they like. Exposure there is a highly calculated, coordinated and focused effort.”
Small studios are notoriously more candid with their work. PixelFoundry's recent offering on Kickstarter, Blackspace, follows this approach to the letter.
“We are always interested to hear the responses of the prospective consumer,” notes Phaneuf. “I think the key is information. You have to give them all the information they need to make an informed decision. When showing unfinished work, we can't just show some pictures and assume everyone gets the idea. Time in front of the consumer is very limited, so you have to share as much information as possible, caveats and all, without being boring. It’s not just what you say, it’s how you deliver it, and it had better be honest.”
PixelFoundry, a three person team, has recently launched Blackspace on Kickstarter and shares some insights from their initial experiences.
“We've only been online on Kickstarter for a couple days,” Phaneuf continues, “but in that time we've had a chance to get some fantastic feedback and ideas from some really informed gamers. It’s not like trolls on forums, these people generally want to see you succeed and seem very engaged in the experience that we all are facing.”
“Kickstarter is a great way to get in front of an active consumer and get a bunch of their time, to listen and to be heard,” explains Volga Aksoy, PixelFoundry’s technical lead and co-founder. “We have nearly a 9 minute video explaining our game, and according to Kickstarter it has over 17,000 views in 48 hours, 16% of people let the video play to the end. The number isn't astounding, but implications are that people have spent at least 425 hours of time with us, not to mention the half plays and skip-throughs, which admittedly, is my preferred method as well. 9 minutes of someone’s time is an incredible opportunity; not only to share an idea, but to show more than you would otherwise, because you actually have the chance to explain it.”
Blackspace is one of those games that is hard to categorize. It could be called a Tower Defense/RTS, or an Action game with tactical elements, but it also has bits of an Arcade Sim/Shooter. It’s hard to put a finger on this game and fit it neatly into a genre.
“Game genres, are bite sized information packets that allow us to make broad range decisions quickly,” Phaneuf explains. “The drawback is that they also help to coax consumers into nicely separated demographics that look good on a spreadsheet. I’m all for knowing your audience, but pushing them into categories is bad practice, it limits exposure to new things and forces the creators to compromise on ideas. Blackspace is a bit hard to define, though we do lean heavily on traditional RTS strategy, there is also flight and active involvement in the action, which kind of stretches that definition. We also are focusing on defense in this game more than offense. You'll only be attacking if you are attacked. What may seem like disparity in direction actually comes together quite nicely in practice. The problem isn’t that we haven’t chosen a hat, its more that a single one doesn’t fit, and we don't plan to change the game in order to make one fit.”
The game consumer demographic is broadening and the average age is getting higher. Game studios are trying to appeal to this maturing audience in different ways. Some games target more mature themes, some allow for greater social connectivity, others offer retrospective of their childhood video game experiences. The Blackspace team is taking yet another approach.
“We recognize gamers are getting older and more mature, we see this as an opportunity to trust their ability to make sound, informed decisions. My daughter might choose her video games, toys and even food simply by color, but she’s six. Game enthusiasts are looking for ways to cut through the plastic wrap of marketing and get right to the meat. They want to understand how it all works and, when convenient for them, to offer two cents that actually amount to something. That is the person we are after and who we are finding on Kickstarter. We have a long way to go, but so far it has been an encouraging and surprisingly positive experience.”
PixelFoundry is working to make something big. They are trying to create a game that really has no business coming from a studio so small. Instead of cutting back the game, their solution is to expand the studio. They have struck a partnership with NVIDIA that will allow them to advance their game to support even higher end graphics technologies like 3D Vision and SLI. They also have announced their support for the recently buzzing, Oculus Rift. They have a long road ahead, but their ambitious game and appealing visuals are, so far, drawing some much needed attention.

Just give us a moment to extract ourselves form the mound of pinched salt that has enveloped us.
A report on French site Journaldugamer – as translated by OXM – makes a number of fascinating claims about the long-waited Valve sequel.
It claims that the project has endured a “very chaotic” development that has seen the game undergo a number of “total revisions”. The end result is that the once “pure shooter” has integrated puzzle-solving and exploration and takes the form of an open-world title complete with quests, NPCs and the works.
The most commonly accepted reason for the game’s protracted development cycle is that Valve is still struggling to iron out its new Source engine.
And – let’s be honest – it would be a quite a surprise if linear shooter masters Valve decided to take its most cherished IP down the sandbox route. But stranger things have happened.
In fact, the only part of the report we find convincing is the claim that Half-Life 3 will be released “after 2013”.

G4BOX Inc., a North American publisher and distributor of interactive online entertainment media, introduced a fifth addition to Cross Fire’s fast-paced co-operative Zombie Mode: the Crater. Included in the game’s most recent update, the Crater is a co-operative challenge where gamers fend off wave-after-wave of reanimated soldiers, genetic mutations and military experiments gone awry, concluding in facing-off against an all new boss encounter, the Mega Warmonger.
“We’re always looking to create a more exciting and frantic game experience within Cross Fire, and the new Crater map in the Zombie Mode will do exactly that,” said JT Hwang, producer of Cross Fire. “This new map has multiple levels, obstructions and hordes of mutant and undead soldiers for players to decimate with all the tools in their arsenal. The action never lets up, not even when the Warmonger makes himself known.”
The Crater takes place in what was once a hidden underground military laboratory now exposed to the Chicago city streets, thanks to a devastating explosion you and your team barely survived. Trapped within the mixture of damaged sewer pipes, fallen roadway and half-toppled building debris, gamers must fight off increasing waves of enemies using a complement of real-world weaponry.
Supporting up to four players at once, teams have a new weapon at their disposal in Crater, the new stationary weapon emplacement. Able to chew-up multiple enemies at will, players have to be strategic with this new game mechanic since players will have limited ammunition and no mobility while raining automatic death from above. Gamers will need this edge because a nasty surprise waits for them in the form of the Warmonger, a ten-foot-tall military-grade mutant, who’s armed to the teeth and just as deadly up close.
Cross Fire is a fast-paced military-themed combat online shooter, pitting two competing mercenary forces, the Global Risk and the Black List, against each other in a war-torn world. Players can choose from a massive armory of realistic firearms, explosives, hand-to-hand weapons and personal body armor used by military forces worldwide. Single and unit-based combat scenarios and location-specific damage combined with popular movie culture create adrenaline-fueled action-packed battles in 10 different gameplay modes: Free-for-All, Escape, Mutation, Team Death Match, Elimination, Search and Destroy, Mutation, Ghost, Zombie and Predator. Developed by SmileGate, Cross Fire is the largest first-person online shooter in the world with more than 3.7 million concurrent users globally. Following the successful closed beta phase of the monster hunting MMO RaiderZ, Gameforge takes a look back and digs up some fascinating data for statistics lovers. Additionally, the online game publisher is proud to announce that the open beta phase for RaiderZ will be starting on the 24th of October, adding new zones and hordes of new monsters for HunterZ to fight.
The world of Rendel has hosted a tremendous amount of adventurers this summer, and there willl be more joining during the open beta. Players created more than 70,000 characters and fought under the flags of 1,037 guilds in the great hunt. That’s enough to fill the O2 Arena three and a half times!
As terrifying as they may be, the monsters of RaiderZ struggled to counter the onslaught of the armies of HunterZ, and at the last count 527,086 of them were missing in action. The colossal Veilnus alone was knocked down 100,031 times, proving that sometimes the life of a legendary beast is tough. Nothing was able to stop the onward march of players toward the beta level cap at 30, reached with panache by 72 dedicated individuals. A bitter-tasting defeat for our creatures indeed. The real question is now how swiftly will players reach the new goals set during the open beta, and how many more monsters will die to fuel the process…
We’re gearing up for the next hunting season in Berlin, join us if you dare on the 24th of October.
