If you're holding your breath in hopes that Blizzard will relent and open upWorld of Warcraft's free trial to the post-level 20 experience, please, please take another breath. You'll die otherwise. The studio confirmed that it has no plans to expand its free-to-play offering past the initial 20 levels.
Producer John Lagravesaid in an interview with CVG that the studio is content with the way things are. "[The free trial gives] a good sense of what our game is," he said. "You know, we looked at it lots, we looked at whether level 20 would give you a good sense of what our game is, and we think it does. There's also a lot of things in the game that are special that we want to reserve for our paying customers."
Lagrave pointed out that Blizzard has been beefing up the trial experience by including additional features that were previously reserved for subscribers only.

Having nearly reached its $900,000 goal on Kickstarter (over $660,000 as of this writing), Uber Entertainment has announced the first stretch goal rewards forPlanetary Annihiliation. Should the project hit $1.1 million, the planet-hopping RTS will receive water planets and naval units. This is one of the most request features, according to Uber, and if the goal is reached, players can expect water-only planets, ice asteroids and several units including "subs, amphibious units, floating buildings and of course battleships."
If Planetary Annihilation amasses $1.3 million, Uber will add gas giants and new orbital units to the mix. Said units will likely include "a more expanded set of orbital recon units, space platforms" and others based on community feedback.
In addition to the stretch goals, Uber has announced several "add-ons" for the existing reward tiers, including extra copies of the finished game, extra beta keys and extra T-shirts. Three more stretch goals are in the works, though they remain "locked" at the moment. We're holding out hope that one of them is reserved for Jell-O planets.

The newly resurrected Black Isle Studios intends to make triple-A role-playing games based on Interplay's intellectual property, it's said.Yesterday a Black Isle Studios website, Facebook page and Twitter page emerged, declaring the studio, famed for its ground-breaking late nineties and early 2000s role-playing games, including Fallout 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 and Planescape: Torment.Black Isle Studios is owned by Interplay, which has been quiet since late last year, when it settled with Bethesda over the in-development Fallout MMO, Fallout Online. Under the terms of the agreement, Bethesda obtained the rights to make and publish the Fallout MMO in exchange for an undisclosed fee. Now, Interplay is back, and it hopes to use the Black Isle resurrection as a way to attract "the best talent".Interplay boss Herve Caen said: "It really feels like getting the band back together as we're seeing opportunities not available to us before. Given our unique position, expanding online and mobile platforms, and renewed interest in our proven properties, I see an incredible success potential for Black Isle Studios."Caen's "getting the band back together" comment seems strange given many of the key staff from Black Isle's glory days are not involved.Former Black Isle lead designer Chris Avellone told Eurogamer the new venture doesn't involve Fallout: New Vegas maker Obsidian at all. "No idea what it's about," he said. "I wasn't aware anything beyond the name was left at Interplay."And Black Isle's return was news to Interplay founder Brian Fargo, too: "I just read that Interplay is bringing back Black Isle. Hmmm... Not enough info for me to comment," he tweeted. Most, if not all, of the people responsible for the games Black Isle became famous for have moved on. Black Isle founder Feargus Urquhart went on to found Obsidian Entertainment, and took many old Black Isle staff with him - Chris Avellone included.Black Isle's plans, for now, remain a mystery.

While we managed to get our hands on Gigabyte's latest graphics card-toting Ultrabook back at CeBIT, we've just finished handling the P2542G (its high-end gaming sibling) at the laptop and motherboard maker's UK launch event. Packing a 15.6-inch 1,920 x 1,080 display, it runs on an Ivy Bridge Core i7-3610QM, with a 2GB NVIDIA GTX 660M card to power PC gaming's latest and greatest. Add in a Blu-ray player and THX-certified dual-woofer sound system and you have the makings of pretty capable beast -- not to mention looking the part with a yellow paint job and dual exhaust vents along the back edge.

NASA’s Curiosity Rover may be 34.8m miles away from Earth, but that’s not stopping it causing a very terrestrial kerfuffle.
Development favourite Peter Molyneux has revealed that a trademark issue with NASA means that he’s left looking for a new name for his debut iOS game, that until now has been known as Curiosity.
How about The Cube? Oh, damn.
The news comes after yesterday’s confirmation that The Game Formerly Known As Curiosity has seen its release date slip from earlier this week to September. And that’s after missing its first release date of mid-June.
But hey, this is Peter Molyneux.
What we have got is a new trailer for the game, which can be seen below.
UPDATE: Modojo reports that the name change is a result of Google SEO. Basiclaly, 22Cans thought better of trying to compete with NASA'a Curiosity online.

Fifth entry in the storied adventure game series coming with the help of crowdfunding
Revolution Software has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund development of a new Broken Sword title.
Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse will be the fifth title in the storied series, reuniting George Stobbart and Nico Collard.
The developer is looking for $400,000, which is it says will give it “full creative freedom” and the chance to reward donors. At the time of writing, the campaign has received $40,076 from 853 backers.
“The process of game development has previously been remote from our fans,” said Charles Cecil, managing director of Revolution Software.
“By self-publishing, we now have a direct relationship with our audience – a position that we value enormously. We’re delighted that the latest Broken Sword title is to be the first of our adventures that we can take with our fans. By pledging support now, we’ll be going on a journey which will end when the opening credits roll – it’s going to be excellent.”

Social games developer FreshPlanet launched SongPop in May, a name-that-tune music game available across Facebook, Android, and iOS, which has smashed past 25m unique players.
There's more than four million users competing against each other in a two-player battle every day, fighting to determine who has the best musical knowledge, and FreshPlanet says the number is rising.
Mathieu Nouzareth, CEO and co-founder, FreshPlanet, said: "SongPop is a simple and fun game that gives people the ideal interplay between social, mobile, and a quick hit of competition between people who love music.
"SongPop's success shows that, with the right idea, a small startup can succeed in connecting millions of people, reignite their love for their favorite hits and prolong that musical experience when the game is over by redirecting them to international and local e-retailers and subscription services including iTunes.
"Our goal is to continue increasing SongPop's music discovery potential and to continually build in new social features that keep players coming back."

Creditors likely to only receive around five to ten cents on each dollar owed
OnLive was days away from being completelyc closed down after accuring between $30 and $40m worth of debt.
As reported by Mercurynews, the company did not have enough money to pay up and was facing complete closure before it was sold to Lauder Partners after significant layoffs.
OnLive CEO Steve Perlman transferred all of the firm’s assets to the new owners, a former investor from 2009, with the streaming service to continue with the same name.
As part of the takeover, creditors will likely only receive around five to ten cents on each dollar owed.
"It was a company that was in dire straits. It only had days to live in terms of cash flow and the like," said Insolvency Services Group CEO Joel Weinberg.

What's inside the cube? You might have thought you were going to find out today, but Curiosity, the first "experiment" from Peter Molyneux's 22Cans studio, has been pushed out of its August 22 release date into September, as revealed in this new trailer.
Wait – maybe it's not ever actually coming out, and the release date will be continually pushed in order to create an eternal feeling of curiosity in its would-be audience. Molyneux is potentially on some next-level emotioneering here. Just in case we haven't got it all figured out, we're checking in with Molyneux for the real reasoning.

You wanna play Borderlands, but you're stuck at your job. Also, the new Borderlands still isn't out, and you've played so, so much of the first one. Or maybe you're only into 16-bit games? The Borderlands remake – an official part of the Borderlands 2 marketing campaign – is here, and it's pretty boss.
Well, okay – it's as boss as a top down, 16-bit, browser-based rendition ofBorderlands could possibly be. Incidentally, that's far, far more boss than we had imagined. What're you still doing here? Go play it!

As any of its millions of players will tell you, League of Legends is a fun game. Those same players will likely also tell you that the game has a tremendously steep learning curve. With more than 100 playable champions, a dizzying array of items and demanding gameplay, getting to know the ropes is no easy feat. Speaking with senior producer Travis George at Gamescom, I asked how developer Riot Games was going to address the issue of easing players intoLeague of Legends.
The game already features bot training and a spectator mode, but what other systems could Riot implement to acclimate new players? His answer surprised me: The problem isn't the learning curve, it's the community.

Archos has had its hand in the slate game since the early days of"internet media tablets," and while its products don't have quite the same brand recognition as, say, Samsung's, we've found the French company's devices to be some of the best-value tablets available. Budget-minded prices and innovation don't usually go hand in hand, but in the case of its new 101 XS Android 4.0 tablet, Archos has a few tricks up its sleeve. The slate boasts a keyboard cover and kickstand, along with a magnetic hinge allowing the lid to attach to the display. Arriving in November for $400, the Archos 101 XS is a productivity-minded take on slates, complete with a full set of keys and a bundled copy of OfficeSuite Pro. Do the hardware and software add up to a killer combo? Read on to find out.

You know you've messed up big time when someone related to the development of one of the first graphical interfaces for computers thinks you've messed up. Usability expert Raluca Budiu has shared the common conclusion for many about Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8; it's definitely not as user-friendly as past versions. Quoting: 'The advantage of the overlaid menu is that it preserves context. Cognitively, there’s more of a burden when you have to switch context twice (desktop->start screen; start screen -> desktop). There are reasons to force users to switch contexts, especially in the tablet or phone environment, where screen real-estate is a lot more expensive and a menu is forced to use only part of the (already-small) screen. In that situation, a separate page makes better use of the small screen space. There are fewer reasons for a separate page on a desktop – the start menu is a cheaper interaction than the start page.'"

Unite 12: Popular engine to offer developers deployment to forthcoming Microsoft platforms
The Unity games engine is to support Microsoft's Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, after an update to version 4 of the multiplatform tool.
The news emerged during the opening keynote of the Unite 12 Unity user conference.
“Our mission at Unity has always been to provide solutions for developers to effortlessly bring their work to as many different platforms as possible,” said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies.
“The Unity community has been asking for access to Windows Phones and have been eagerly anticipating the release of Windows 8. We’re happy to announce that we will support both.”
Microsft senior director of Windows app marketing John Richards added: “We are excited that the Unity community will now be given the opportunity to develop world class titles for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

August 22nd, 2012, 23:52 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft recently caused quite a stir in the industry when it unveiled its Surface tablet. Much of the media rushed to make comparisons with Apple’s dominant device, the iPad, while others speculated on a possible rivalry between Microsoft and its various partners.
In fact, according to Microsoft’s director of partner strategy and programmes, Janet Gibbons, the device is intended to be a showcase of the very best that Windows 8 can offer.
“We announced it just to put the design point out there and to show what’s possible,” Gibbons told PCR. “It really opens up the opportunity for people to think differently about PCs and what PCs have to look like.”
GfK’s business group director, Carl West notes that this policy of using a single showcase device to excite the market is one that could pay off.
“As a proof of concept I think it’s a good move,” said West. “I think it’s an opportunity for other vendors to see and test the reaction of the markets based on what Microsoft has done.”
Meanwhile, Ronan de Renesse, principal analyst at Analysys Mason’s research division, dismisses the idea that Microsoft would be creating rivalries with its other vendor partners.
“It’s about showcasing Windows 8 rather than really being competitive in the tablet market against its partners. I think that when you look at other PC markets, if Microsoft lost those partners in other markets there could be a detrimental impact for it. Even though it’s quite comfortably settled in those markets, there’s still some risk.”
Regardless of whether or not it will create rivalries, the fact is that the tablet market is now too big to ignore. Figures from Analysys Mason predict that the market for tablet and e-reader devices will grow to see 140m units sold in 2017 compared to 33.5 million this year.
This trend is reflected in GfK’s sales figures, which track volume going through indirect channels.
“Just looking at the year to date in volume terms, this market has doubled,” explains West. “We only look at retail sales, which account for around 55 per cent of the tablet market and around 85 per cent of the notebook market, but we still see that tablets outstrip notebooks in sales volume. It is a major form factor. It’s already overtaken both notebooks and netbooks combined. Mobility is tablets.”
These figures are corroborated by Entatech’s commercial group vice president Jon Atherton, who has recorded strong growth in the tablet category: “There’s been a massive growth spurt over the last couple of years, obviously mainly due to the iPad. I think the Microsoft Surface product will be unique and a real contender against the iPad.”
With all this predicted growth, de Renesse feels that there’s room for Microsoft to make its mark: “Apple’s got around 90 per cent market share, it’s really in the lead here so there’s definitely room for a second player in the market. I think that with the Surface, Microsoft is showing that it’s really after a share of that market and I think it has good chances.
“If it delivers on the promises, if it delivers on the OS and the price point is correct then they will sell.”
So what is it that makes the Surface so important? Well, the fact is that the tablet category is no longer complementary to traditional PC usage models – it is supplanting them. Businesses have been aware of the process that has been termed ‘consumerisation’ and ‘Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)’ for some time, and it is increasingly a concept that ties in with the Connected Home.
“I don’t think the desktop is dead yet, but there’s definitely a bit of cannibalisation coming from tablets. I think the tablet primarily is a home companion device, so the use of the tablet is either in the home or the office,” observes de Renesse. “It’s very nomadic, so the connectivity aspect in terms of being connected all the time like a mobile phone is not as important.”
This idea of having a device that essentially moves between two networks supports consumer models of the connected home – a concept that has become increasingly popular.
“The connected home is reality,” states West. “It’s very much a reality at this stage. Networking infrastructure in the home is growing, consumption devices like tablets are growing and the whole concept of the connected home is a viable industry now. If you go in to any retailer at the moment, you’ll see an increase in these products.”
So it is with these developments in mind that we must view Microsoft’s recent changes in strategy. It has shifted its Office software to a subscription-based pricing model, brought out a new tablet and is moving towards selling software via an App store – all these are paradigm changes for the software giant.
“Steve Ballmer has stated that this is a going to be a new era for Microsoft and for our partners,” said Gibbons.
“The reason we say that is because, if you’ll remember, Windows 95 really pulled home computing into the mainstream and we feel that 2012 is going to be another year like that.”
It has reason to believe so. By the end of this year we’ll have seen the release of Windows 8, Office 2013, Windows Phone 8, Halo 4, and the launch of a new App store, as well as the acquisitions of Skype and Yammer and a strong commitment to the cloud. But where does this leave independents?
“The way I see it is there’s no mistaking that this mobile platform of computing is having a direct effect on accessories,” notes West.
“Sales of headphones, both in-ear and headsets, have grown dramatically this year and accessories that go with them – cases and so on. Independent retailers have the opportunity to really embrace this and add their level of service and knowledge of the products.
“There’s enough going on there to allow these guys to really specialise in the connected home – almost be a connected home consultant as it were. It’s an opportunity for independent retailers to really specialise.”
Among distributors, there seems to be a clear feeling that Microsoft is on the side of the channel, as Atherton notes: “With Apple, it has its distribution partners but it also sells direct through its Apple Stores.
“From a UK perspective, Microsoft doesn’t have stores. It has some in the US but in the UK it’s not its route to market, so hopefully the channel will win with the Surface rather than the iPad.
“Microsoft’s route to market is through the trade, but Apple tends to go direct so this is the kind of thing that the channel needs.”
There seems to be a watershed moment approaching in the IT market. New usage models are emerging – models that offer a number of different approaches to market for vendors, distributors and retailers alike. Although it is still at the early-adopter stage, the fact is that change is in the air. Interesting times.
