Yes, it is possible for a game to be considered "released early" in 2012 even after having been originally made in 1997. The new PC version of Final Fantasy VII showed up for sale on the website last night, according to reports on theforums.
The problem is that the downloaded copies don't work yet. The automatic license activation (through the SecuROM DRM) failed for those who bought it, and manual serial number entry also didn't work.
If that's how it is for early purchasers, it's probably a good idea that Square Enix pulled the apparently erroneous purchase links. The total price attached to these early sales was $12.70, so expect that to be the price when it's ready for prime time.

The return of the PC classic Rise of the Triad from developer Interceptor Entertainment will be sold digitally for $14.99 and offer all post-launch DLC for free, the dev announced during QuakeCon 2012.
Marketing director Dave Oshry told Joystiq the priority was being faithful to the original Rise of the Triad in the core game, with add-on content allowing the Interceptor team to go crazy once the remake is finished.
Oshry says that co-op has been one of the most requested additions players at QuakeCon have asked for, so it's now on the minds of the developers as something to pursue in the future. Even weapons came up as a possible addition – such as shotguns, which were not featured in the 1994 original – but part of their inclusion would depend on player interest. As far as Interceptor is concerned, the sky is the limit, and the developer plans to support the game well after launch.
As if running down a checklist of oft-requested features from PC players, the game will also be DRM-free, completely moddable, run at 60 frames per second and have plenty of adjustable settings to let the game run on older hardware.
An exact release date has yet to be revealed; however, during a QuakeCon panel, the developer promised it would arrive "late this year or early next year ... at the latest, early 2013."

The next game in the BlazBlue franchise is titled Chrono Phantasma, and is set to hit Japanese arcades beginning this winter. Chrono Phantasma features three new characters: Amane Nishiki, Bullet and Azrael.
Amane uses her feminine wiles and ribbon-like robes to attack, Bullet takes the idea of "firepower" to a very real level, and Azrael appears to use his size and brute strength to his advantage, all visible in the above video. Chrono Phantasma includes updated and new backgrounds, music, and abilities for existing characters.
The new BlazBlue will go on location test at Hey Arcade in Akihabara on August 6-12, if you needed an excuse to jump on a plane to Japan right now.

Pretty soon your mom won't need the computer to get her Words with Friendsfix. The Zynga and Hasbro partnership will bear its first fruit this fall, when board game adaptations of CityVille, Words with Friends, Farmville and Draw Something hit retail, ABC reports.
CityVille Monopoly will be available in October for $24.99. It's a version of the Hasbro classic where players are tasked with building skycrapers instead of houses and hotels, and the first player to build four skyscrapers wins. Hungry Hungry Herd also releases in October, for $22.99, and is Hasbro's interpretation of FarmVille – it's just Hungry Hungry Hippos without the hippos.
Words with Friends will be available in two flavors this October and will play exactly the same as the online game, in the standard, $19.99 edition and a deluxe $39.99 edition with a rotating board. Not much is known on the fourth and final game, an adaptation of OMGPOP's Draw Something, which Zyngaacquired for $200 million back in March. The board game adaptation of Draw Something is planned for late October/early November and will likely play a lot like Pictionary.

Jace Hall, founder and former CEO of Monolith Productions, is looking to bring back 1997's original gore-fest of a game, Blood. Hall brings the idea up on The Postmortem, a Blood fan forum, gauging interest and asking for wish lists in a potential Blood remake.
"To be clear, I am thinking of bringing the ORIGINAL Blood game back as it was, with functionality alterations/enhancements that are similar but superior to ZDAEMON's," Hall writes. "I would also make it work on all platforms, and not just PC."
Hall has all of the legal rights and issues "handled" and will get support from anyone with a legal investment in Blood, he says. Hall will be the one footing the bill the new game as well: "One thing to also know is that if I go ahead and attempt to bring Blood back, I will be the one actually paying the bill. It is certainly going to cost money to do this, and I will not likely be getting my money back. It will be all for the fun of it. Just something to know."
Hall has reservations about releasing the source code for Blood, writing, "Part of what I'm hoping to achieve with this potential project is a game that really allows people to build measurable value in their cummulative game accomplishments." The conversation is on-going at The Postmortem if you'd like to share your blood-soaked dream list with Hall himself.

After a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, Jordan Weisman, creator of Shadowrun, has returned to bring the series back to the screen as Shadowrun Returns; an old-school, turn-based tactical RPG. Their successful initial fundraising (over $1.8 million) allowed them to commit to developing a native Linux version of the game. A second team, working closely with Weisman, now hopes to bring a similar, turn-based Shadowrun game to life: Shadowrun Online. To be built with the Unity 4 engine, Shadowrun Online will be massively multiplayer and have native Linux support from the start — assuming, of course, they manage to fund their project. Both games are expected for release in 2013.

For a few days now, folks in the Great White North tied to Telus and Bell have known how much coin they'll have to layout for a BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE when it launches on the 9th. Thanks to leaked memo from Rogers, obtained by MobileSyrup, we now know what the carrier will be charging as well. $550 nets Canadians the slate free of any commitments, while one- and two-year contracts drop that price by $50 and $100 respectively. If you're brave enough to partner up with the OS 2.0.1-loaded, 1.5Ghz slate for three years, it can be yours for a more wallet-friendly $350. Hey, it's not like BB10 is exactly right around the corner.

SWTOR going free was the "only way to go", says SOE's Smedley
In a Reddit Ask Me Anything event, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) president John Smedley said that Electronic Arts and BioWare were making the "right decision" by taking Star Wars: The Old Republic free-to-play. Smedley has dealt with the Star Wars brand in the past, as SOE once ran Star Wars Galaxies, the first MMO based on the brand.
"It is the only way to go for new games. It was the right decision for SWTOR (which is a fantastic game). Wait till you see our next round of games after [Planetside 2],"said Smedley when asked about SWTOR free-to-play shift.
Smedley also had some choice words for those talking about the decline of the PC industry.
"I hate it when people talk about the decline of the PC industry. It's idiotic garbage spouted by morons that can't count where the players are playing. It's not like League of Legends reports numbers to NPD. The players are playing F2P games on the PC not going to retail," he said.
The full AMA thread can be found here. Planetside 2's beta event begins next Monday, August 6, 2012.

Zynga has quickly fired back after EA filed legal action against it for copying one of its games.
The social games giant says the games publisher's move is 'ironic' and 'demonstrates a lack of understanding of basic copyright principles'.
EA today filed a suit against Zynga saying its new The Ville game was too similar to The Sims Social, and that it was using its financial might to take the firm to task for the controversial method of cloning rival games.
EA says Zynga has "wilfully and intentionally copied and misappropriated the original and distinctive expressive elements of The Sims Social in a violation of U.S. copyright laws."
But Zynga says its The Ville comes from a long line of pre-existing games.
"We are committed to creating the most fun, innovative, social and engaging games in every major genre that our players enjoy," a statement said.
"The Ville is the newest game in our 'ville' franchise - it builds on every major innovation from our existing invest-and-express games dating back to YoVille and continuing through CityVille and CastleVille, and introduces a number of new social features and game mechanics not seen in social games today.
"It's unfortunate that EA thought that this was an appropriate response to our game, and clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of basic copyright principles."
To add insult, Zynga has claimed EA is just as guilty of releasing games similar to a rival's.
"It's also ironic that EA brings this suit shortly after launching SimCity Social which bears an uncanny resemblance to Zynga's CityVille game. Nonetheless, we plan to defend our rights to the fullest extent possible and intend to win with players."

August 5th, 2012, 12:14 Posted By: wraggster
President of Sony Online Entertainment John Smedley has apologised for decisions made on the direction of Star Wars Galaxies, describing then as "stupid" and a "complete and utter fail".
In an Ask Me Anything on Reddit, Smedley offered a candid apology for the controversial Combat Upgrade (CU) and New Game Enhancement (NGE) updates, which between them removed the ability of players with combat professions to stack defensive abilities, significantly reduced and simplified gameplay mechanics and professions and made Jedi a starting profession.
Smedley defended the decision at the time, citing the need to revamp the game in order to stem the loss of subscribers the game was suffering. Instead, however, the updates sparked in-game demonstrations and further player exoduses. Sony subsequently offered refunds to players who bought the Trials Of Obi-Wan expansion as it was released two days prior to the implementation of NGE.
"Stupid decisions," Smedley wrote in response to a question from a user, "Complete and utter fail and I am very sorry."
After the player backlash, Smedley moved to assure players that SOE had learned from the mistakes it made with CU and NGE and wouldn't repeat them. Subsequent attempts to reintroduce some complexity to the game weren't enough to reverse its decline, however, and the SWG servers were eventually shut down in December 2011.
Fans of the pre-CU game have created a number of free emulators, allowing the world to continue in an unofficial capacity. Asked what he thought of one example, SWGEmu, Smedley was equally candid.
"Well officially I have to say it's bad," he wrote. "But that's officially."

James Kendrick writes that after Apple introduced the iPad, companies shifted gears to go after this undiscovered new tablet market but in spite of the number of players in tablets, no company has discovered the magic bullet to knock the iPad off the top of the tablet heap. 'What's happening to the 7-inch tablet market is what happened to the PC market several times. Big name desktop PC OEMs, realizing that consumers didn't care about megahertz and megabytes — yes, that long ago — turned to a price war in order to keep sales buoyant,' writes Adrian Kingsley-Hughes. 'Price becomes the differentiating factor, and this in turns competition into a race to the bottom.' Historically, when a race to the bottom is dictated by the market, it's more a sign of a lack of a market in general. If enough buyers aren't willing to pay enough for a product to make producers a profit, the market is just not sufficient. Price is a metric that most people know and understand because it's nowhere as ethereal or complicated as CPU power or screen resolution. Given a $199 tablet next to another for $299, the $100 difference in the price tag will catch the eye before anything else. But if price is such an important metric, why is the iPad — with its premium price tag — so popular? Simple, it was the first tablet to go mass market, and cumulative sales of around 85 million gives the iPad credibility in the eye on potential buyers. 'So the problem with the Kindle Fire — and the Nexus 7 — is the same problem that's plagued the PC industry. Deep and extreme price cuts give the makers no wriggle room to innovate,' writes Kingsley-Hughes. 'By driving prices down to this level so rapidly, both Amazon and Google have irrevocably harmed the tablet market by creating unrealistic price expectations.'"

Admit it. You are in a love-hate relationship with Firefox. Either Mozilla gets Firefox right and you are jumping up and down, or Mozilla screws up and you threaten to ditch the browser in favor Chrome. Mozilla's passionate user base keeps Firefox dangling between constant ups and downs, which is a good thing, as long as Mozilla is going up. Unfortunately, that is not the case right now. Mozilla's market share has been slipping again at a significant pace. There has been some discussion and finger-pointing, and it seems that the rapid release process has to take the blame this time. Are we right to blame the rapid release process?"What do you find most annoying or gratifying about Firefox these days?

The latest Sims expansion pack features seasonal festivals, new activities and dramatic weather effects.
Just when you thought your Sims had everything, EA gives you the ocean the play around in. For the first time ever in the Simsfranchise, plays can stick their characters in a rubber dingy and have a splash about in the sea.
It’s not just the summer we’re treated to in the latest expansion pack, Sims can catch some air on the half pipe during a snowboarding session, set off fireworks, and carve a jack-o’-lantern.

Microsoft is to cease using the word Metro as the name for the distinctively designed user interface in Windows 8.
According to Ars Technica, the surprise development has come after the German retailer, Metro AG, threatened the software vendor with legal action.
From now onwards, staff have allegedly been told to refer to it as the ‘Windows 8 style UI’, although the company has indicated that a different name is in the pipeline.
“We have used 'Metro style' as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines,” reads Microsoft’s press statement.
“As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog, we will use our commercial names.”

World of Warcraft remains the reigning titan in terms of subscription-based games... but the titan is looking just a little bit leaner at the moment. The most recent subscriptions numbers for the game were released today in theActivision Blizzardearnings report for Q2 2012, and the game has dropped to a total of 9.1 million subscribers as of the end of June. For those keeping track at home, that's a loss of 1.1 million players since the last update on subscriber numbers in May.
Despite the subscriber loss, the overall earning report is positive, citing the announced launch date of Mists of Pandaria and the success of Diablo III (it sold over 10 million copies) as major milestones for the company. According to the report, most of the lost subscriptions are coming from Eastern players rather than US and European players. This is the first time in several years thatWoW has been beneath 10 million players, and it's certainly interesting in light of recent discussions about the future of games with a subscription fee.

Poker is a huge competitive sport right now, and StarCraft II is becoming more popular every day. To Playhem co-founder Keith Swan, he sees synergies between poker played online and competitive online StarCraft II.
"A big initiative that we're currently working on is bringing poker into the e-sports world and changing the way online poker is experienced," said Swan. "We think of online poker as much closer to a real-time strategy video game than we do to a physical game of table poker. To be good at online poker you need strong quantitative skills, be able to process information about your opponents, think quickly, employ calculated risk taking. The skin may be very different, but the skillsets are very similar to a game like StarCraft II or League of Legends. And not surprisingly there are a bunch of StarCraft players who are also online poker pros. We think there are some very cool ways to create new types of e-sports style competitions around online poker, and we'll be rolling out some of those features in the coming months."
Poker has transformed itself from a game mostly played in private rooms to a worldwide competition with tournaments broadcasted on television. Competitive sports leagues like MLG are making competitive games a more compelling offering for people to watch online and Swan thinks the sky might be the limit when it comes to e-sports' mainstream appeal.
