Sega will today announce a European and North American release for multiplayer RPG Phantasy Star Online, a report claims.
PSOWorld claims to have obtained a copy of Sega’s press release announcing the title for a 2013 release, which carries a publication date of today (July 9th).
“Phantasy Star Online was a revolutionary game when it was released, and we want to make sure that its successor in the series is every bit as ambitious,” Sega America’s VP of digital Chris Olson stated.
“We look forward to introducing Phantasy Star Online 2’s unique, easy-to-access multiplayer action to the rest of the world next year.”
Sega Japan’s Satoshi Sakai added: “The number one thing we want to provide players in Phantasy Star Online 2 is an adventure that changes every time they log in. Just as great table-top RPG experiences revolve around imaginative and unexpected encounters, we want players to consistently be surprised as they explore dungeons and undertake quests.”

The first game from Activision's new Leeds, UK mobile studio is a revamp of classic owned IP Pitfall, not Call of Duty, the firm has told MCV.
Activision has swiftly moved to put the record straight after reports late last week claimed it was working on a UK-made Call of Duty for smartphones.
But this afternoon Activision's Martyn Brown, the Team 17 co-founder tapped up to build the new studio, told MCV:
"In setting up there has been a lot of interest given the publisher we are working with. In the third week of may we revealed we had the studio, and yes it is based in Leeds, and we have hired some key talent in the form of Mark Washbrook and Mark Lloyd [formerly of Rockstar Games].
"The first game we are making is in fact Pitfall, which is 30 years old this year."
Pitfall is a symbolic choice for the new UK studio - the 1982 original was Activision's first major release, coded by co-founder David Crane. Ports appeared on many 8-bit systems and Activision has remade the title a number of times for later formats.
Pitfall for smartphones is a fresh take, said Brown.
"We've been working on Pitfall since earlier in the year when we set up and it has been really good to revisit that and bring it to a modern audience."
More details on the game, Brown said, will be revealed in due course as the team puts the finishing touches to the title.
Brown said that Pitfall is ultimately just one of a raft of Activision IPs it has the chance to introduce to the fast-growing audience for smartphone games.
He explained: "Being able to call upon a wide portfolio of properties is really good for us and we are looking forward to finally showing it to more people."

Microsoft has confirmed Windows 8 will RTM the first week of August, with general availability in late October. Steve Ballmer suggested Microsoft expected Surface to sell "millions" of the 375m Windows 8 PCs expected to sell in the next year — spending much of the keynote talking about partners' devices. From the article: 'Tami Reller, chief financial officer and chief marketing officer of the Windows and Windows Live division, confirmed the release date at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto today, as she showed off a host of Windows 8 devices created by the software giant's manufacturing partners.'

The world's largest phone maker is reportedly planning to release its own Windows RT tablets in October, which would have it directly rival Microsoft's new Surface tablet.
Bloomberg first reported the rumour stating the new devices will feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon ARM chip instead of the company's own Exynos ARM chip.
A source who asked to remain unidentified told the news site that Samusung has made a handheld computer built on Windows RT - the first version of Windows available on ARM technology - and is scheduled for release in October.
Windows RT is Microsoft's first mainstream operating system built for touch-screen devices and works on chips typically featured within smartphones, whilst traditional desktop PCs are powered by x86 processors.
Hewlett-Packard delivered a blow to Microsoft last week when it announced it would not be initially supporting Windows RT and would instead opt to introduce a Windows 8 based tablet, which only functions on x86 processors which are produced by Intel and AMD.
Samsung's decision to support Windows RT will bolster Microsoft's effort to challenge Apple who still remain the dominant force within the tablet PC market with the success of the iPad.
At the end of the first quarter, Apple led the market with a 58 per cent share and a total of 11.8 million units shipped, whilst Samsung trailed second with 11 per cent and Amazon third with 5.8 per cent.

A US court has overturned the temporary sales ban on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus after the company filed for an appeal.
Restrictions on the sale of the device came into effect last week after Apple secured a ruling that the world's leading phone maker infringed one of its search patents.
Whilst the court did not give a reason for its U-turn over the decision, Apple will now have until Thursday to file its response.
Patent consultant, Florian Mueller, who has been following the case believes that if Apple are able to have the ban over the device reintroduced it may be months until Samsung are able to overturn the decision again.
The case between the two companies is not due to enter full trial until March 2014.
The patent being disputed by Apple involves the use of its single search interface which the company filed back in 2004, and is able to retrieve and display information gathered from a range of systems using a number of techniques.
It has predominantly been used by Apple with their voice-activated search function Siri, which gathers information from a number of sites such as Google, Yelp, Wolfram Alpha, Yahoo and Wikipedia.

Reef Entertainment's Rambo game still exists, with the publisher announcing plans to exhibit a playable build of the console and PC game on the Gamescom show floor in August. In a bold display of Rambo-esque machismo, Reef has called the new game "Rambo: The Video Game," instantly tossing aside the eight previous Rambo video games released to date.
Despite this apparent confidence, Reef has yet to reveal any media showing the actual game. "We have been quiet since we acquired the Rambo license last August," admitted Reef commercial director Craig Lewis in the latest missive. "During this time we have been dedicated to creating a videogame for consoles and PC that will allow Rambo fans and gamers across the globe to really get under the skin of Rambo and wield his iconic weapon-set in battle." Reef plans to release more information about exactly how you'll get inside his skin (and about the game) between now and Gamescom.

Tom's Hardware did another benchmark showdown, since several releases of both Firefox and Chrome came out since their last one. Did Mozilla clean up its act and listen to its users? The test results are listed here. Firefox 13.01 uses the least amount of RAM with 40 tabs opened, while Chrome uses the highest (surprisingly). Overall, Firefox scored medium for memory efficiency, which measures RAM released after tabs are closed. Also surprising: IE 9 is still king of the lowest RAM usage for just one tab. Bear in mind that these tests were benchmarked in Windows 7. Windows XP and Linux users will have different results, due to differences in memory management. It is too bad IE 10, which is almost finished, wasn't available to benchmark."Safari and Opera are also along for the fight.

Perhaps we’ve been concentrating too much on the hardware side of the Raspberry Pi. Sure, connecting the Raspi to the outside world through GPIO pins is cool, but let’s not forget we’re dealing with a full-fledged Linux box here. [chris] is doing his best to keep us in check with by bringing the power of OpenGL graphics to the Raspberry Pi.
Previously, OpenGL ES was only available for xorg but [chris] successfully added support for Raspbian. There’s a [chris] put together showing off 128 spheres and cubes bouncing around a plane.
Right now, [chris] is looking for people to contribute samples and tutorials for making accelerated 3D graphics on the Raspi. You can grab all the code over at [chris]‘ Git and contact him over on the Raspberry Pi forums if you’d like to help out.
As with any graphics demo, check out the videos after the break.

Survey finds that users unaware of services, but interests rise once educated
[h=3]Gaikai Inc.[/h]
[h=3]OnLive[/h]
The Western gaming audience has had little exposure to cloud gaming despite its two most prolific proponents - OnLive and Gaikai - claiming engagement with millions of users.
Consumer-focused service OnLive doesn't give out user figures but claims to be reaching "millions" of users in press statements, while Gaikai's business-to-business technology has been adopted by the majority of games publishers, YouTube, retailers such as Walmart and social networking site Facebook.
But according to a report by Interpret which surveyed digital gamers in ten countries, players in markets such as the US, UK, France, Germany and Australia have low familiarity levels with cloud gaming, ranging between 3 and 5 per cent.
However, once educated on the possibilities of cloud gaming - streaming high-end PC games to low spec hardware without the need for downloads - interest levels rose significantly.
52 per cent of digital gamers in the US said they were very or somewhat interested in cloud gaming services, followed by 49 per cent of Australians and 46 per cent of UK gamers.
French and German players were less interested at 36 per cent and 29 per cent, respectively.
Earlier this week Sony Computer Entertainment acquired cloud gaming service Gaikai for $380 million, a move that Interpret VP Michael Cai called "a strategic move that provides a path for the gradual migration of gaming to the cloud."

Remember when Microsoft got us all salivating with a proof-of-concept demo that took touchscreen lag from 100ms to 1ms? Well, Redmond is protecting the product of its tireless research by applying for a patent. The claim focuses heavily on the use of a predictive system that takes an educated guess as to where you're going to move next, and does some serious preprocessing to minimize lag. The result is a smooth moving UI, so long as you don't surprise the predictive algorithms. Do something completely unanticipated and all those preloaded animations must be flushed, resulting in some graphical stutter. We wouldn't get too excited just yet, though, the broad patent, seems like it's a long way out from landing in a smartphone or tablet. The clip we saw in March (embedded after the break) is little more than a white splotch that follows your finger. But, if even some of this tech makes into future Windows products, expect your touchscreen experience to be a much smoother one.

Sure, it may not have been the most, you know, explosive launch at this year's E3 -- but if Facebook "likes" are any sort of metric (which, granted, is debatable), EA's newly reborn and heavily-socialized SimCity has a bright future ahead of it. SimCity Social opened up shop on the Zuckerbergian social network this week, letting players plan and build cities, harnessing the site's massive user base to build friendly relationships or form rivalries between towns. The 800k or so likes the game has currently racked up clearly aren't enough, so EA is offering up exclusive content for those who click the friendly thumb. And seeing as how sitting in front of your computer wouldn't be complete without some fried breakfast pastries, Dunkin' Donuts is getting in the act, allowing players to gift coffee and doughnut "Boosts" in-game.

It's no secret that both the 8GB and 16GB variants of Google's Nexus 7 have been set to ship in two to three weeks from pre-orders placed at its Play store. While retailers like Gamestop are also remaining mum on specifics, Staples has stepped up with actual arrival dates on its US and Canadian websites for the 16GB model. Apparently, fast fingers within the United 50 that lay out $250 to reserve one of theJelly Bean-loaded slates by July 10 can expect it to arrive as early as the 13th -- that said, Staples notes that this "limited quantity" of initial stock is set to ship "between July 12th and July 17th." Heading to Staple's site for the Great White North, the tablet is listed to hit shelves in-stores and online on the 23rd for 259 Canadian dollars, however, there's no word on when online orders might ship. We'd still advise you to take these dates with some NaCl at this point, but it's likely a safe to bet that you'll have yours before August if you place an order soon.

Green Man Gaming CEO Paul Sulyok believes Tuesday's EU ruling on second-hand digital sales will make cloud gaming a less attractive prospect to consumers in the long term.
Sulyok, whose company allows consumers to download games then trade them in for credit against future purchases, warns that, while the practical effects of the ruling won't take effect straight away, a future in which players are able to sell on their digital copies of games easily could have a negative effect on the market for streaming games.
"With cloud gaming you never actually get any 1s and 0s, all you get is a video stream," he told us. "So even if the cloud gaming provider asks £39.99 for you to own a game in perpetuity, all they're really saying is that you can play the game as much as you want in perpetuity. They're not actually saying that you own that game.
"That makes cloud gaming a little less attractive to consumers, because if I can buy a game, download it and then trade it in to offset the cost of my gaming experience, I'm reducing my risk."
While options like Onlive's PlayPack Bundle, which offers unlimited play of the service's catalogue for £6.99 a month, go some way to mitigating any concerns over ownership - and indeed value - Sulyok's point is arresting. But while consumers may be put off by the idea of a service in which they never own anything, it could be the very factor that drives publishers to adopt it more rapidly - especially given the harm to mexisting margins digital trading could bring about.
He goes on to suggest that, while the creators of "knock it out of the park, triple-A" releases would be unlikely to lose too much sleep, it would be the smaller studios with lower marketing budgets who may lose out as consumers used to selling on their digital games become less inclined to take risks.
Osbourne Clark interactive entertainment lawyer Jas Purewal, however, sees the potential for subscription resales at some point.
"One of the problems with the case is that it ignores the rise of cloud computing - including cloud gaming services," he explains. "It's certainly more unclear how the second hand sales ruling could apply to them.
"That said, it is conceivable that similar issues about allowing consumers to trade cloud gaming game subscriptions could arise based on this case - but that is likely to take some time in practice."
Either way, it will be some time before the impact of the ruling is felt, and even if friction arises between the needs of publishers and consumers when it comes to cloud gaming, Sulyok believes a compromise can be found.
"The market will address and will find a balance at some stage, both for the benefit of the consumer and content owners," he concludes. "It has to."

Part of the Android-powered Elements line, which also includes seven and eight-inch models.
Denver-based electronics manufacturer Archos is the latest ambitious firm to enter the tablet space, with high hopes that its Android-powered 'Elements' line will be able to thrive.
The range comprises three high-powered, entry-level devices in seven, eight, and 9.7-inch forms, seemingly an attempt to attract potential buyers of the Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, iPad, and all of those in between.
The Archos 97 Carbon is the same size as Apple's best-selling tablet, and it will be the first of the trio to hit shelves – this month – weighing in at 21.8 ounces with a 0.45-inch depth.
The $249.99 Carbon also sports:
* Ice Cream Sandwich
* 1GHz processor
* 1GB of RAM
* Front and rear camera

Minecraft version 1.3 is on the way, and this update looks to be a doozy. The most sweeping change will be a merging of single-player and multiplayer modes. More specifically, single-player as everyone knows it will now be a "shell on top of multiplayer."
The reason behind the change, according to Mojang, is to accommodate the upcoming modding API, which otherwise would have required modders to create multiple versions of each mod, one for single-player and one for multiplayer. The downside is that single-player games will now require a little more computing power, though Mojang is hoping to smooth things out a bit in 1.4.
Other additions in 1.3 will include emeralds and emerald ore, the ability to buy items from villagers, the ability to write in books, an optional "bonus chest" that helps new players "get started quicker" and more. Minecraft 1.3 is slated to arrive August 1, with a "release candidate" available a week prior.

'This is not World of Warcraft, we aren't going to be able to add new content every couple of months', says dev
There are not enough features for a long-term sustainable end-game in Diablo III, Blizzard's community manager has admitted.
Speaking on the official forum, Bashiok said that whilst there was still a lot for players to do, such as an item hunt, he recognised that users would run out of things to do.
He claimed that Blizzard were currently working on the issue, although it wouldn’t be resolved for some time, and also warned users not to expect the same amount of new content that World of Warcraft receives.
“We recognise that the item hunt is just not enough for a long-term sustainable end-game,” said Bashiok.
“There are still tons of people playing every day and week, and playing a lot, but eventually they're going to run out of stuff to do (if they haven't already). Killing enemies and finding items is a lot of fun, and we think we have a lot of the systems surrounding that right, or at least on the right path with a few corrections and tweaks.
