ASUS has managed to keep a tight lid on its Computex 2012 lineup, but it left no doubt about this: it wason the verge of announcing a dual OS (and possibly dual form factor) device capable of running both Android and Windows. Otherwise, we've been left to throw guesses at the wall. Was this to be a Transformer Pad running Win8? A dual-side touchscreen device? Well, friends, you needn't wonder any more. The company just announced the Transformer AiO, an 18.4-inch desktop that runs both operating systems.
Unlike the Android-and-ARM-based Viewsonic desktop we saw earlier today, the Transformer AiO seems rooted in Windows 8: it boots into Win8, and transitions into Android only after you press a button. In addition to running two OS', the AiO has dual form factors: you can use it as a traditional all-in-one if you like, or you can detach the screen from the base and use it as a wireless display (slash, an absurdly large 18-inch tablet). No word yet on when this will be available or how much it will cost. For now, we've got an extra photo in the gallery below, along with a walk-through video after the break.

MSI is well-known for showing tablets at Computex -- it even showed what amounts to the same tablets at two different shows. It's certainly shaking things up this year, however, with the Slider S20. We've seen hybrid tablet PCs before, but the Windows 8-toting S20 has a fairly slick tilting mechanism that locks the 11.6-inch touchscreen at an angle, turning the slate into a pseudo-laptop right on the spot. MSI is only willing at this early stage to mention a few key details, but it's promising at least one Slider S20 variant with a properly speedy low-voltage Ivy Bridge chip as well as 4GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI and USB 3.0. Our friends at Engadget Spanish got an early look and found the tablet a bit chunky with a so-so display, but also thought that it looked like a "robust" design. Check our overseas companions' first impressions for more, and know that the Slider S20 is expected to reach Europe in September at €899 ($1,121) in its full Ivy Bridge glory along with a lower-powered model at €799 ($996).

One Laptop Per Child is tag-teaming it up with foreign language learning company Little Pim to teach English to underprivileged children. The initiative could help to blur the line between work and fun and lead to future opportunities for kids in an ever-increasingly global economy where English is the lingua franca of many multinational groups and companies. Getting educational videos onto OLPC's affordableXO laptop is consistent with the new partnerships' philosophy that "learning should be a joyous experience and that children learn best when learning and play are seamless activities." There's no word on when the package deal will be available, but we'll be on the lookout for further info. Full PR after the break.

A multiformat massively multiplayer game is the first of a series of experimental games that will lead up to a final full game release from the new Guildford-based studio in around three years' time.
The game is set in a white room, inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, with a mysterious black cube hanging in it. The question it sets is, what’s inside? Made up of millions of smaller cubes, players will be able to tap them to break them - and here’s the kicker - there’s only one cube in the world, so everyone’s tapping away at the same object, exposing the layers beneath.
“It’s so intriguing that the first thing you do is to touch the cube, and as you do, you’ll move towards it," Molyneux told us. "As you do so, words will fade in: “Curiosity” and that will fade away. Second: “What is inside the black cube?” As you get closer, you realise that as you tap, this almost imperceptible crack will appear, a hairline crack so tiny in this huge cube.
“If you keep tapping, the crack will grow. And then as you look around the cube, you realise that there are other cracks slowly appearing, and that’s when you realise that there’s only one black cube in the whole world, and everybody who’s tapping and chipping and sculpting away at this cube is trying to find out what is in the middle. I’m not going to tell anyone.”
The aim for Molyneux is to discover whether curiosity at the cube’s big secret is enough to drive players into working away at the extraordinarily large number of taps it’ll take to get to its centre.
But there are many more secrets besides - we’ve visited 22Cans and have seen what part Curiosity takes in what amounts to a remarkable endeavour in game development. Find out about Molyneux’s full plan for 22Cans in our issue out July 4.
And if you’ve read the free sampler for our new iPad edition, you may well have guessed that Curiosity is what we’ve based its last page on.

Valve insists the game will be free-to-play, not pay-to-win
Valve has announced that its upcoming title, Dota 2, will be free-to-play. The company has also opened the Dota Store in preparation for the game's full launch, which allows players to purchase cosmetic items for their Dota experience. In the announcement for the in-game store and the game's official FAQ, Valve is insistent that players will not have to pay-to-win. Heroes are free and other items will be cosmetic.
"All of the heroes will be available free of charge. We believe restricting player access to heroes could be destructive to game design, so it's something we plan to avoid," says Valve.
"Players who don't want to buy things from the Dota 2 Store will be able to earn them in a variety of ways, such as by simply playing the game, increasing their Battle Level, or by trading with other players," the FAQ adds. "All the items in the store are cosmetic, and don't affect gameplay."
"The opening of the Dota Store is a big part of our final push to launch," said IceFrog, design lead on Dota 2. "With support for the Steam Workshop, the majority of the items made available on day one were created and being sold by members of the community. By making the game Free to Play, we hope to give gamers the ability to decide how - and how much - they want to invest in the game."
Valve plans to launch the full game later this year and will host the International Dota 2 Championships 2012 in Seattle, WA later this summer.

Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 won't be the first major browser to pack a "do not track" component, but it'll be the first to have it switched on by default. Though Microsoft doesn't yet support the feature on its own websites, it plans to help hammer out the protocols by cooperating with industry, government and standards organizations in the months ahead. With Twitter's support for the measure, the crew in Redmond isn't the only one kicking the privacy ball forward. The Digital Advertising Alliance, however, isn't pleased with the development, in no small part because it struck a deal with the White House to honor "do not track" so long as it's not a default setting. Despite the move, Microsoft said it hopes users will choose to share their data with advertisers to receive more relevant advertising. Hit the more coverage links for added details on Microsoft's feather ruffling.

In the interest of keeping cool this summer, we've put together a list of the hottest products out right now. From smartphones to e-readers and everything in between, there's no time like the present to re-up that post-spring-cleaning stash. So grab a popsicle or a cold one and dive in -- the water's just right.
If you've been in the market for a new laptop, you've done the wise thing in waiting until now to buy: both Intel and AMD are putting the finishing touches on their newest mobile chips, which means a torrent of fresh notebooks is on the way. (Power users can already pick up a gaming machine or desktop replacement running one of Intel's new quad-core CPUs.) For the widest selection, we suggest waiting until mid-June or so, but in the meantime, we present you three of the best laptops money can buy right now. Enjoy, and do stick it out, if you can, for the inevitable Ivy Bridge refreshes. But if you must pull the trigger immediately, jump down past to the break to read our summertime suggestions.
[h=2]Editors' Choice[/h] |
[h=4]15-inch Samsung Series 9[/h]For now, at least, there's truly nothing like it. At 3.5 pounds and .58 inches thick, the Series 9 isn't just thin and light for a 15-inch laptop; it's wispy even compared to most Ultrabooks. (The 13-inch Series 9 laptop - a skinny Ultrabook in its own right - is just 0.08 inches slimmer.) But make no mistake, this all-metal laptop isn't just a $1,500 status symbol; it also brings robust performance, a matte, high-res display and an impressive seven and a half hours of battery life. The biggest downside is that it's currently shipping with a last-gen Sandy Bridge processor, but Samsung is already teasing a refreshed version with an Ivy Bridge CPU.
Price: $1,500 at Amazon |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
[h=4]Apple MacBook Air[/h]Though Apple's featherweight ultraportables are growing long in the tooth, they remain best-in-class, with elegant aesthetics and a comfortable keyboard-and-trackpad combo -- something far too many Windows-based Ultrabooks are lacking. Even with its aging Sandy Bridge processor, the performance in the 13-inch model is twice as fast as what you would have enjoyed with the previous generation, though smart shoppers will hold out a month or two longer until Apple invariably refreshes its lineup with Ivy Bridge CPUs and more powerful integrated graphics.
Price: $999 at Apple |
|
[h=4]HP Envy 14 Spectre[/h]Even amid the flood of Ultrabooks making their way into stores, the Spectre is memorable: after all, who could forget a laptop fashioned partially out of glass? With its reflecting pond-like lid, glass-coated palm rest and metal chassis, this Ultrabook has a design that's striking, beautiful and refreshingly different from what other PC makers are doing. For the money ($1,400 and up), you'll also get a 14-inch, 1600 x 900, IPS-quality display -- a clear step up from the glare-prone, lower-res panels used on most other ultraportables. Other perks include a backlit keyboard, full copies of Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, a two-year subscription to Norton antivirus software and a generous two-year warranty.
Price: $1,400 at Amazon

So grab a popsicle or a cold one and dive in -- the water's just right.
We'll call it -- in 10 years' time, tablets are gonna make desktops and laptops niche products. In the three years since the iPad fell from the sky, these humble devices have become ideal ways to surf the internet, play games, and, most importantly, create. Here's three of the best for you to enjoy over the summer, with the notable exception of the Galaxy Note 10.1. We're excited to see the stylus-centric slate in action, but it's still not ready for primetime, so we have to hope it's here before the new school term. Read on past the break to take a look at our current warm weather selections.
[h=2]Editors' Choice[/h] |
[h=4]Apple iPad (2012)[/h]Consistently raising the bar for the rest of the world to follow, Cupertino's slate is the unsurprising choice for No. 1. Beating rivals both in user experience and specifications, the 2012 model is the first that hasn't felt like a luxury purchase. We've seen people using the 5-megapixel camera in place of a point-and-shoot, the Retina display has to be seen to be believed and it's ideal for photos, video and working on the go. Legendary build quality, elegant design and user-friendly software mean it remains our default choice -- deservedly so.
Price: $500-$700 at Apple |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |
[h=4]ASUS Transformer Pad TF300[/h]ASUS' adherence to the three Ps (Power, Performance and Price) enabled the company to produce a budget version of its Transformer Prime that really doesn't make too many compromises. Powerful Tegra 3 internals and 8-hour battery life impress, while the keyboard dock adds four hours of extra power, a USB 2.0 port and an SD card slot -- although a word of warning, it's not comfortable enough to help you finish that term paper. Best of all, while the feted (if sometimes troubled) Transformer Prime costs a hefty $650 (dock incl.), the Transformer Pad is a much more reasonable $400.
Price: $400 at Amazon |
|
[h=4]Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7[/h]If you're waiting for the 10-inch Note to arrive, then might we suggest the equally impressive (if not stylus-friendly) Galaxy Tab 7.7? It's not cheap, but inside that slender shell is a battery rated for 12 hours, a 1280 x 800 Super AMOLED Plus display and performance that puts bigger tablets to shame. Eschewing flimsy plastics for a brushed metal body, it feels sturdy and expensive when in use. Best of all, you can buy it with an LTE/CDMA modem inside, which will turn it into the biggest novelty cellphone you'll ever see... or use.
Price: $450 (on contract) at Verizon

Desktops are amazing. They deliver serious, expandable computing power to the places where you need it most, and with much better bang-for-the-buck than laptops. Moreover, they're constantly evolving: low-power PCs can now do more with fewer watts, regular gaming PCs can achieve 3D effects that would have required extreme setups just a year ago, and all-rounder desktops have become, well, even more rounded. Which brings us to the recommendations: three PCs that range from $799 to $1,199 and beyond, and that represent each of these three categories. If you're going cheaper, don't be afraid to build your own -- that way you'll only spend money on specs you actually need. Ready to see our selections? Head on past the break to read 'em.
[h=2]Editors' Choice[/h] |
[h=4]27-inch iMac (2011 / 2012)[/h]Okay, we're justing fooling with ya. A 2012 model doesn't exist yet, but we're pretty certain it's just around the corner. The 2012 refresh should at least bring an Ivy Bridge processor and a more up-to-date graphics card, so it's worth holding out for. If you really can't wait, then try to get a discount on a 2011 iMac. It'll deliver everything you'd expect from an Apple all-in-one: seamless functionality right out of the box, a huge, LED-backlit display with great viewing angles and color rendition, and specs that will happily cope with media creation rather than just consumption. Don't be afraid to open it up and add more memory and an SSD -- it'll work out far cheaper than paying Apple to do it.
Price: from $1,597 |
[h=5]You might also like...[/h] |

[h=4]Tranquil PC ixLS[/h]This little creature doesn't have to sit on a desk. It's perfectly happy beneath your TV or next to your stereo amp, where it can stream video and music without polluting your entertainment with the constant whir of a fan. You see, this PC is part of a wider trend towards fanless computers that stay switched on 24/7. Thanks to Intel and AMD pushing the boundaries of low-power chip design, you can do much more than play content -- you can run productivity software on your TV or through remote desktop apps, use the PC as a NAS, or even indulge in a spot of gaming. Pro tip: splurge on an SSD as your primary drive and you'll make the ixLS totally and blissfully silent, not to mention faster. Also check out the MMC-12 chassis from the same company if you want a wider and flatter profile.
Price: from $1,200 at Tranquil PC |
|
[h=4]Digital Storm Marauder[/h]Sure, it's three times the cost of a PlayStation 3, but it can do three times more, with up to three times the resolution. Added bonus: it looks like an ammo crate. We'd actually pick the $1,199 option that comes with a cutting-edge and overclockable Intel Core i5-3570K, a capable mid-range AMD Radeon HD 7850 graphics card and a 1TB hard drive. If your desk is big enough, save some cash for a triple-monitor setup too: it sounds crazy, but three 22-inch panels shouldn't set you back more than $400-$500 and they'll transform games, video editing and other tasks.
Price: from $800 at Digital Storm |

We know Computex will involve nothing less than a deluge of new laptops, but if we believe Bloomberg, it's going to be a Windows 8 tablet-topia as well. Hot on the heels of the Windows 8 Release Preview, it's claimed by the ever-present "people with knowledge of the matter" that Acer, ASUS and Toshiba will all be showing tablets with the new OS at the Taipei show. ASUS will reportedly get the star treatment at Microsoft's keynote and show off Transformer-style Windows 8 tablets that we suspect are hinted at in ASUS' slightly cryptic trailers. Processor loyalties could be split across the wider group, though: ASUS is said to be spreading the love by showing both an Intel-based tablet as well as one using NVIDIA's ARM-powered Tegra line, but Acer's previously rumored tablet is poised to go the Intel-only route, and Toshiba's may exist solely in a TI OMAP-based ARM camp. It's not apparent if anyone else will join the Windows 8 tablet frenzy, although Qualcomm is expected to show yet another Snapdragon-running test device. We'll be on the ground at Computex next week, so you can be sure that we'll give you the full rundown on Windows 8's opening salvo.

Alienware's M11x may be history, but as these things tend to go, there's always someone willing to carry the torch. Maingear's recently-introduced 11.6-inch Pulse 11 just so happens to be that rig in this here story, and those that've been waiting won't have to twiddle their thumbs any longer. The company is shipping the bantam gaming rig in the US starting this week, offering a Core i7 CPU (or a Core i5, if you'd rather), NVIDIA's Optimus graphics switching (tied to a GeForce GT 650 'Kepler' GPU), 11.6-inch LED-backlit panel (1366 x 768), up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a 9-in-1 card reader, six-cell Li-ion battery and plenty of ports. It's starting at just $999, but speccing it out all proper like will send the asking price well north of that. (But trust us, it's worth it.)

Recently AMD announced that it would cease offering monthly graphics driver updates, and instead issue Catalyst versions only 'when it makes sense.' That statement would be a good deal more comforting if it didn't 'make sense' to upgrade AMD's drivers nearly every single month. From 2010 through 2011, AMD released a new Catalyst driver every month like clockwork. Starting last summer, however, AMD began having trouble with high-profile game releases that performed badly or had visual artifacts. Rage was one high-profile example, but there have been launch-day issues with a number of other titles, including Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, Bat Man: Arkham City, and Battlefield 3. The company responded to these problems by quickly releasing out-of-band driver updates. In addition, AMD's recent Catalyst 12.6 beta driver also fixes random BSODs on the desktop, poor Crossfire scaling in Skyrim and random hangs in Crysis 2 in DX9. In other words, AMD is still working to resolve important problems in games that launched more than six months ago. It's hard to put a positive spin on slower driver releases given just how often those releases are necessary."

Microsoft has made a release preview of its new Windows 8 operating system available for download.
This new preview includes features that are currently unavailable in the consumer preview that was released back in February.
Microsoft is calling its latest operating system ‘the most important redesign since Windows 95’. It has been designed to bring Windows into the touchscreen era with its Metro interface specifically designed for touch gesture controls.
Windows 8 will also feature Internet Explorer 10, new apps for the Bing search engine, and improvements to the mail and photo applications. And for the first time ever, there will be no Start menu button at the bottom of the screen.
Consumers can download the release preview of Windows 8 here.
PCR reported earlier this week that Microsoft would be running a $15 upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for customers who purchase a Windows 7 PC from June 2nd. This offer will run until January 31st 2013.

The 50,000 consumer strong survey from the Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe shows internet use is now commonplace across desktops, mobiles, tablets and consoles.
In fact, 37 per cent of Europeans use all these devices – and not just a PC - to browse the web.
That said, desktop is still the dominant web source, securing 65 per cent – 426.9 million users – though mobile also achieved promising results with 21 per cent – 139.2 million users.
Age and location is a contributing factor for the device choice, with desktop use pocketing 89 per cent of Norwegians and Swedes, most used by 25-44 year-olds with 44 per cent.
Meanwhile, 16-24 year-olds are the most likely to use the mobile web with 30 per cent, and more than 40 per cent of Brits use the platform.

Aliens: Colonial Marines may have been delayed all the way until February 12 of next year, but at least we can take solace in knowing that the Collector's Edition leaked back in January is not only the Real Deal with Bill McNeal, but is even more legit than previously indicated.
For $100, the Collector's Edition includes a Powerloader vs. Xenomorph statuette and a USCM dossier containing a mission brief, a schematic of the USS Sephora, a recruitment card, iron-on badges, recon photos and a USCM graduation certificate. It also comes with digital goodies, not the least of which is the ability to play as the film's Apone, Drake, Hicks and Hudson.
You'll also receive Ripley's flamethrower, "additional marine customization options," two bonus multiplayer weapons ("Sonic Electromagnetic Ball Breakers" and "Phase Plasma Rifle") and an exclusive level, the USCM Academy Firing Range. Pre-ordering the standard edition from Gamestop will net you the four bonus characters, customization options and Ripley's flamethrower, but none of the other content/toys. You will, however, have an extra $40 in your pocket, and won't need to explain the Exosqaud figurine on your desk.

We've just gotten a thorough look at the Windows 8 Release Preview, and Microsoft has now also finally confirmed what the upgrade path will look like for those buying PCs before the OS is officially released later this year. The company will be rolling out a Windows Upgrade Offer in no less than 131 markets starting June 2nd, which will let anyone who buys an eligible Windows 7-based PC also purchase a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $14.99 -- that offer will be valid through January 31st, 2013. Upgrade offers for those who already own a Windows 7-based PC will also be announced in the "coming months," but that's unfortunately as much as Microsoft is saying about those at the moment.
