All signs point toward the impending general availability of Windows 8, what with the upcoming OS launch event, the Surface RT finally hitting the FCC, and Paul Allen letting the world knows what he thinks of it. In light of this, the Redmond company has announced a final update push to the built-in appsyou'll find in Windows 8. The Bing update will be first out the gate tomorrow -- it promises richer search results for local content -- with the rest rolling out through October 26th. Also of note is Music, which touts "expanded music services" as an update (Xbox Music, anyone?). If you're itching to know what built-in apps will be updated, you can get the full and extensive list after the break.

Inquisitive gamers appear to have unearthed hints to new download content coming to Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Tucked away in the files for the recently-released Update 1.4 was apparently information pointing to the coming of a new area, a new boss called Dreadtooth, a new companion, new ship items, space missions, vanity pets and mounts. The long list of discovered content has been detailed over on the game's official forums(thanks VG247).
BioWare released the Update 1.4 last week, which added a new Operation, Terror from Beyond, along with a huge list of new content and changes.

Found along the sidelines of Panasonic's CEATEC booth, the AX series Ultrabook is a foldable hybridthat will be arriving in Japanese stores later this month. Ready to launch with Windows 8 (both standard or Pro) built-in, the Ultrabook houses a 11.6-inch touch display at the ever-popular 1,366 x 768 resolution, although it feels a little on the thick side, and is unmistakably Panasonic in its styling. Connectivity options are legion, with two USB 3.0 ports on the right edge, accompanied by HDMI socket. On the other side, there's an SD card reader, ethernet, power, mic and headphone ports. The hinge seems suitably solid, and while that touchscreen isn't the most attractive we've seen on Windows 8 hardware, the keyboard felt pretty similar to existing business laptops and our fingertips had plenty of space. Otherwise, we were left to play with a Japanese iteration of Windows 8, which seemed nice and responsive in both tablet and notebook setups, although our playtime was limited.
The AX series will launch in Japan on October 26th in three different permutations, starting with an Intel Core i5 processor clocked at 1.7GHz or 1.8GHz, and a Core i7 at 1.9GHz. There's 4GB of memory and a 128GB SDD in all three, while the hybrid bucks the trend by offering a removable battery, with both the faster Core i5 and the Core i7 models coming with an extra cell bundled in. That top-end processor will also arrive with connectable projector for business types. Check out our brief hands-on after the break, or hit the source for the full list of specs.

RIM's attention around its QNX-based platforms might revolve around BlackBerry 10 as of late, but don't think that it's leaving BlackBerry PlayBook users behind. A PlayBook 2.1 update is rolling out today that fills in some of the gaps left by 2.0 earlier this year. Habitual messagers can now start SMS text messages directly from the tablet when tethered through BlackBerry Bridge; they also get overdue support for a portrait view in email, calendars and contacts. If communication isn't the cornerstone of your life, you'll still find a few niceties such as Android App Player support for the camera and in-app purchases, device encryption that extends to personal data and wireless printing beyond the local network. For now, you'll have to be an owner of the original, WiFi-only PlayBook to leap on the 2.1 train today -- those who sprang for the usually carrier-bound PlayBook 4G LTE should get their upgrade within a month.

Gaming peripheral manufacturer Razer isn't backing down on its "Project Fiona" gaming tablet, despite keeping it locked away for the past nine months. The company is, however, assessing interest in the concept -- first revealed at CES 2012 -- by asking fans to "Like" its Facebook page. If the page exceeds 10,000 likes/shares within a week, CEO Min-Liang Tan says, "we'll work on making the concept a reality and launch the product." He also says Razer's whittled down concepts for the device, though he's open to "suggestions for specs, form factor, pricing, features," and even "etc." It doesn't sound like it'll make its previously planned "second half of 2012" launch window, but Razer says nothing's changed on that front just yet.
As it stands, the device sports a 10.1-inch multitouch high def screen, an Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor, an unknown (but allegedly beefy) GPU, and two nunchuck-esque controllers mounted to either side of the screen. It's also said to run Windows 8 -- make no mistake, this is a PC in the form of a tablet. But you still have the power to change it! Do us a favor and don't request rear touch capabilities.

Over the past few years, AMD's desktop processors have struggled to keep up with Intel's. AMD has slashed prices to make its chips more appealing, but Intel has largely held firm. Three years of historical data shows that Intel CPU prices have remained stagnant, especially for models that cost $200 and up. AMD chips, on the other hand, tend to fall in price steadily after they first hit the market. Some drop by up to 43% in the first year. This trend is a byproduct of the unhealthy competitive landscape in the desktop CPU arena, and it's been great for Intel's gross margin. Unfortunately, it's not so good for consumers."

The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) has published an open letter to Microsoft opposing the fact that ‘Do Not Track’ will be turned on by default on IE 10.
Coming less than a month before Windows 8 is due for release, the letter says DNT-by-default is the wrong choice for consumers who may wish for data relating to their web surfing habits to be tracked.
The default setting for the Windows 8 browser will be bad news for advertisers, as it could potentially block their ability to collect data on users surfing the net on IE 10.
ANA argues that this data “fuels economic growth on the internet and supports online services that define the consumer online experience”.
Thirty-nine ANA members have put their names to the letter, including AT&T, Dell, Ford Motor Company, IBM, Intel, Kellogg, Nestle, McDonalds and Wal-Mart.

Microsoft's Apps World stand offers a tantalising glimpse of what to expect from Windows Phone 8.
Apps World in London's Earls Court has hundreds of exhibitors, seminars and demonstrations to choose from. The ebb and flow off delegates means that areas will fill up and empty regularly over the course of the day.
But one stand that is perpetually busy is Microsoft's.
There's no doubt that a large number of people are attracted to the Microsoft's area by the sight of tablets running Windows, and the whispers of 'Is that a Surface?' ping back and forth from those approaching.
The answer, alas, is no - it's not a Surface.
But people remain, because after playing with Windows 8 on a tablet it doesn't matter that it's not on the company's forthcoming slate. Playing with the OS is such an immersive experience that the portal becomes non-existent, the OS itself is king.
Offering the ability to flick between a traditional desktop and the not-called-Metro-anymore start menu, on a tablet, Windows 8 tablets might prove to be the first device that can truly offer the ability to do a full day's work in the office, but also be suitable for surfing and general dicking around when lazing on the sofa in the evenings.
Completely polished, the best word to sum up Windows 8 is 'elegant'.
The music library looks like a storefront, the way it offers up your contacts' details the most intuitive system I have seen yet, and you can feel that the whole thing has been designed for touch.
But what about Windows Phone 8?
Well, despite a series of talks about the mobile OS, there was a notable lack of any real new information about Windows Phone 8, but rather than frustrate, this seemed to only stir up more anticipation, even among the usually cynical delegates - especially once they had had a chance to play with the tablets on display.
I bumped into a vehemently anti-Microsoft friend at the show - this guy is Linux all the way - and when I told him how much I liked Windows 8 he gave me the kind of look that nerds are all too good at firing towards those of us less-technically minded; a mixture of pity and irritation. However, when I saw him again two hours later, his manner had changed.
"Did you have a go on the Windows 8 tablets?" I asked. Looking at the floor he mumbled, "yep".
"And what did you think?"
A pause, a sigh.
"It was really, really nice."
HA! In your face!
If Windows Phone 8 is anything near as enjoyable and practical as Windows 8 on tablet devices, the company really might start making a dent in iOS and Android's dominance.

Valve Software -- maker of the iconic Half-Life series and proprietor of digital storefront Steam -- today released Steam's first non-video game software (originally scheduled to launch in early September). ArtRage Studio Pro, CameraBag 2, GameMaker: Studio, 3D-Coat, 3DMark Vantage, and 3DMark 11 join Valve's own Source Filmmaker in the newly minted software section of the Steam store. All non-Valve software is PC-only for now -- we imagine Mac software will also show up at some point, but nothing's available just yet. Like Steam's games, software titles will receive streamlined updates via the Steam client, and consumers will enjoy similar discount offers to the games section -- the first such sale is already on, with launch day software getting a 10 percent discount until week's end. Bizarrely, the software titles also have Steam achievements. Finally, developers get rewarded for porting their games to Android by something other than crushing piracy!

For all the enthusiasm Oregon Scientific put into launching (and naming) its MEEP! tablet, the company has been a bit timid about getting the kid-friendly Android device into the market -- we're just seeing it go on sale eight months after it was first shown to the world. Now that the slate is here, it may be worth the patience from parents. The 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 chip, 512MB of RAM, 800 x 480 screen and 4GB of storage won't have the adults regretting their Kindle Fire purchases, but the MEEP! does come in a smash-resistant form with remote parental control and an allowance-based store that lets kids 'buy' apps with virtual coins. Oregon helps its case through the use of Ice Cream Sandwich, preloaded games likeAngry Birds and a raft of accessories for games and music. The $150 asking price is just low enough that we can see a few families starting their youngest technophiles on a MEEP! before graduating them tobigger, badder tablets with less punctuation in the name.

After concentrating on gaming and visual improvements in previous releases of Chrome, the browser's latest focus appears to be in video engagement. The latest beta includes a PeerConnection API that lets developers create real-time video chat applications without a plug-in. This builds upon existing WebRTC integration with a new getUserMedia API that should result in higher-quality video, audio, and data communications. The Beta also bundles in track support for HTML5 video, letting developers add in subtitles, captions, and other metadata -- the above photo, for example, is a screencap of a bike ride video enhanced with Google Map and Street View data. Another nice addition is a MediaSource API which adjusts video quality based on computer and network environments, which should put an end to those agonizing waits while the dancing inmate version of Gangnam Style buffers. Those interested can get their mitts on the new Chrome Beta today.

The social and mobile space has seen a profusion of building sim titles of late, making the pace of construction in Dubai seem almost lackadaisical by comparison. Farms, cities, diners, towers, airlines, even game studios: if you can name it, there’s probably a sim themed around managing it. The genre is perfect for dipping in and out of at regular intervals to tinker with and observe the pocket-sized world you’ve set in motion.

Marketing campaign claims cats could stay homeless or even be killed if game isn't approved on Greenlight
Reverb Publishing has expressed its regret after a promotion for one of its titles on Steam Greenlight called on users to vote for the game in return for the company donating $5,000 to homeless cat charity the Humane Society.
In a press release, the publisher said if Edge of Space, developed by Handyman Studios, wasn’t approved, that the money would “disappear like a puff of smoke in an uncaring wind”.
It also suggested that kittens would be left in the “harsh elements, be placed in harm’s way and possibly scheduled for euthanasia”.
Some users have expressed their anger and disappointment on the title’s Steam Greenlight page, calling it “disgusting” and “horrible marketing”.
“Jokes aside, the comments made were disgusting and undeserving a vote in my book. Think before someone writes press releases for you,” said one user.

Sixth iteration of Indie bundle gets smallest return since second offering
The Humble Indie Bundle 6 closed today, selling over 300,000 to raise over $2 million for indie developers and charity.
This may be a lot by Kickstarter standards, but it's the lowest sales have been since Humble Bundle 3 kicked sales up to over $2.1 million.
Humble Bundle V was certainly a tough act to follow after it raised over $5.1 million from nearly 600,000 purchases at an average donation of $8.53.
Though some saw the previous collection of games - Bastion, Amnesia, Limbo, Sword&Sworcery, Braid, Super Meat Boy, Lone Survivor, and Psychonauts- as a bit of a departure from the usually humble offering, Humble Bundle 6 returned to the old pattern of mixing a few hits in amongst relative unknowns.
This strategy has made the Humble Bundle and indie packages like it a godsend for the developers lucky enough to get their games included in the mix.

Survey also shows that half of all adults in the States access the internet via tablet or smartphone.
According to research by the Pew Center, the number of adults in the US accessing the internet via mobile devices has rocketed.
And so has adoption of said devices.
An impressive 22 per cent of adults now own a tablet (double last year’s number) while a further three per cent regularly spend some time on a tablet someone else at home has. So, that's 25 per cent using tablets on an almost daily basis.
For smartphones, the figures are even better: 44 per cent of adults now own one, up from 35 per cent in May 2011.
But look at the headline – what about news? Well, seems that having a mobile device in their hand encourages staying on top of current affairs.
Forty-five per cent of mobile internet users have downloaded a news app to their mobile device (in 2010 that figure was 20 per cent), while tablet owners are leading the way. When it comes to mobile news consumption, 66 per cent of respondents accessed news on their device, compared to 62 per cent of smartphone owners.

Silverball Studios today announced that with only 2 days until the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign; for the no-compromise revival and rebuilding of the legendary Pro Pinball ® series, they are going to make sure the loyal fans and backers of the project so far still get a reward for getting behind the project, even if the Kickstarter is not a success.
The studio will still look to produce the series even if the Kickstarter fails to reach a positive conclusion; as the fans have convinced them that the games are wanted. The project to revive and remaster the hugely popular games will still go ahead with a revised time frame, although the studio are still hopeful the money can be raised. " When we launched this campaign about a month ago we had 0 backers. We now have over 1000 backers whom on average have pledged a category beating $113 each! Thank you, each and every one of you! Regardless of the outcome of this Kickstarter we are determined to bring Pro Pinball back. If we don't hit the target itwill take us longer to do than we would’ve liked and have a few less bells and whistles. But the bottom line is over 1000 of you want more Pro Pinball and so do we!" Said Adrian Barritt, CEO of Silverball Studios
The studio have made the unprecedented move to still offer many of the rewards to those who have backed the project, even if the project doesn’t hit its Kickstarter goal.
"As a thank you to those who have pledged and supported us, and in the event Pro Pinball does go ahead without Kickstarter, we pledge, to all of our backers, that many of the fantastic rewards on offer will still come your way!"Added Barritt.
In the event the campaign is unsuccessful through Kickstarter and the Pro Pinball series is still Revived or Remastered, the studio will still honour ALL the following rewards in the tiers for those who have backed it so far:
· Wall Papers
· Thanks on the Webpage
· Digital Manuals
· Digital Soundtracks
· Insignias
· VIP Forum Access
· Glass Off Mode
· Beta Access
· Thanks in the Games
· Custom Dot-Matrix Sequences
· Initials in High Score tables
· Special thanks on the Playfields
This unparalleled move by the studio will be the first time a Kickstarter project has offered so many of the rewards to backers, regardless of success. The studio hope that move will demonstrate the gratitude it has for the current backers and also to boost pledges as people really do have everything to gain; if the project is successful backers will get all the rewards in their chosen tier and the project will come to life - making 5 new games, if it is not then they still get many of the rewards for FREE.
The campaign, if fully funded, will see the development team create a brand new ultimate Pro Pinball ® table, designed by the legendary Pat Lawlor as well as fully re-creating from scratchthe four original Pro Pinball ® tables for various platforms, including PC, Mac, iOS, Android, PS3, PSVita and XBLA, to name but a few.

The South Seas of Lagoonia have just been transformed into an all-out telenovela. Main quests in the new browser title now lead players down the path of rescuing a lost love, building up an island paradise, befriending new stranded characters, marriage, family, and a happy ending in the warm, tropical sun. Beautiful new graphics complement the storyline, and a re-designed menu makes it easier than ever to navigate around the game.
The launch also includes faster gameplay and performance. In order for existing users to play the new version of Lagoonia, a reset button has been implemented, which can be pushed to start over and enter into the updated storyline.
The focus of Lagoonia is on relationships – both between characters and players, and players with one another. One can plan and create many things that make the island livable and fun: from a warm fire and a cozy shelter, to useful fish nets, and later in the game lighthouses and waterslides. The game is free and no download is required – the only technical requirements are a browser and an internet connection. The game is currently featured in theGoogle Chrome Store.
With about 90 million registered players, InnoGames is one of the world's leading developers and providers of online games. The Hamburg-based company has scored major successes with games such as Tribal Wars,Grepolis and Forge of Empires.

Crazy Fairies' latest updates are adding some awesome new features and you can check them out on every computer platform or via Facebook.
First, they've begun rolling out a new system called Hexing that adds different effects to player weapons. 2 Hex styles are already in-game, with five more rolling out over the next few patches (and I've included some art as a sneak peek).
The update also included an enchantment system so players can further customize their weapons and make combat even more fun.
Finally, Epic weapons and Craftable wings will be coming soon. For more details, keep reading!
Check out the game now at http://www.crazyfairies.com
The future of gaming is games playable on every platform and Crazy Fairies is just one of many things Spicy Horse is working on, so this is one to watch.
Hexing
Hexing is a new system players can use to add awesome effects to their existing weapons. Spicy Horse will be rolling out the Hexing system over the next few patches.
The first two new Hexing weapons are already in the game. Those are:
Glacial: These ice-based weapons delay your enemy's next attack!
Infernal: These fire-based weapons increase damage for the next three rounds.
Hexes can be added to any existing weapon by purchasing a Hex in the Crazy Fairies shop for 60 gold. Players can apply the Hex to their weapon at any time. Here's some examples of Crazy Fairies characters wielding their new Hexed weapons.
Upcoming Hexed Weapons
Upcoming hexed weapons include:
· Vampiric: Use the power of the vampire and add 50% of damage done to your health.
· Steampunk: Gears and gizmos combine to knockback opponents.
· Jubilee: Show those clowns the power of the circus and make them miss a turn.
· Confection: Did you know candy makes you go blind? It's true.
Vampiric Weapons
Steampunk Weapons
Jubilee Weapons
Confection Weapons
Enchanting
Also being introduced is Enchanting. Enchanting allows players to add the following stat bonuses to their weapons.
· Attack
· Defense
· Crit
· Dodge
· Unique abilities will be coming in the future.
To enchant a weapon, players must extract Essence from rare items or purchase it from the shop. Once they've extracted enough essence and found the neccesary gems, they can enchant their weapon in the Furnace.
Coming Soon To Crazy Fairies
Two very cool features players have been demanding are next up on Spicy Horse's agenda for Crazy Fairies. These are:
Craftable wings. Ordinarily, gaining a coveted set of wings requires climbing to the top of the Marks list each week. However, soon players will be able to make their own wings.
Epic Weapons. These weapons require a very unique, very rare material that can only be obtained through tournament chests. Here's a preview of the art for those weapons:
