A new security company has found a vulnerability in Steam’s browser that could allow hackers to upload malicious code to a PC.
According to the findings from security research firm, ReVuln, Steam’s in-game browser can be tricked in to redirecting to malicious websites which then upload malware that can give a hacker remote access to Steam’s command protocols.
Firstly, Steam’s install feature can be used to trick the system in to installing code on to a PC. It usually installs backups from a local directory but the path can be reconfigured to utilise a networked folder on a remote host.
When run in conjunction with various games, such as the Team Fortress and APB: Reloaded, this technique can allow a hacker to implement a number of exploits including directory traversal and integer overflows.

Unable to resist the growing tablet market, US retailer Best Buy is entering the fray with new device the Insignia Flex.
It is, of course, unlikely to ever be widely available in the UK, given that the retailer had to close it's 11 UK stores in January this year.
The Insignia Flex is due to appear in November. It's an Android device, with a 9.7-inch screen, dual-core 1GHz processor and a ten-hour battery life. Reuters suggests that it will have an RRP of $239 to $259.
Best Buy failed most visibly in the UK, but it's reportedly been struggling in the UStoo. It posted a loss of $1.2 billion in its last financial year and had to close 50 stores.
Founder Richard Schulze, the founder of Best Buy, is attempting to buy the company, but the news has not been welcomed and share prices have been unsteady as a result.

Microsoft has announced prices for its Windows 8 Surface tablet in the UK.
Available now for pre-order, Surface will start at £399 for the 32GB Windows 8 RT version.
This starting price matches Apple’s cheapest iPad, but if you want a 32GB RT tablet with a Touch Cover, it will set you back £479.
For £559, consumers can get their hands on a Windows 8 RT Surface tablet with 64GB of storage, complete with Touch Cover.
The pricing coincides with the release of the first super-dancey Surface TV ads, which you can view here.
The Surface tablet is an ARM-based slate with a 10.6-inch 1366 x 768 resolution display screen and Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.
The Surface Pro - which will come with Intel’s 3rd gen Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor and either 64GB or 128GB of storage - is expected to arrive in early 2013.
Microsoft's Surface tablet is available for pre-order now at www.microsoft.com/surface.

The partnership will see Kaspersky Lab provide Facebook with up-to-date information about the latest threats.
Kaspersky will be helping Facebook enhance its security both online and offline. The security firm will contribute expert advice, tips and informative articles to the Facebook Security page. This resource centre keeps the online community informed about the latest cyber-threats and provides regular reminders of safe online browsing habits.
People are more likely to click on a link shared by a friend, and this inherent trust is something cyber-criminals prey upon.
Malicious URLs can automatically share themselves with a victim’s personal contacts without the user’s knowledge, making the links appear legitimate.
Now, when Facebook users share or click a link shared by their friends, the link will instantly be compared against Kaspersky Lab’s database of malicious web pages. If the link matches Facebook’s list of known ‘bad’ URLs – which are supplied to Facebook by Kaspersky Lab and other security vendors – the user will be immediately notified and blocked from visiting the web page.

They have kept it on the down-low so far, but Microsoft's marketing push for the Surface tablet has now begun in earnest with TV ads, media appearances from executives and publicity stunts like this.
Steven Sinofsky, head of Microsoft's Windows division showed how tough the new slate is by using it as a skateboard deck.
Microsoft made a big deal about wanting to use materials in the Surface that had not been put in previous touchscreen computing products and ended up using Vapor Magnesium for the case, along with Gorilla Glass 2.0 for the touchscreen. Sinofsky posted a couple of pictures on his Twitter account to prove just how hard-wearing this made the device.
As publicity stunts go, it's a unique one, and it's true that very few other devices would stand up to such punishment. Time will tell whether it will pay off and convince users to trade in their laptops and iPads for the Surface.

With Surface for Windows RT going on sale in just 10 days, Microsoft is finally ready to talk about pricing and availability -- not to mention, some technical details it left out when the tablet debuted back in June. After the Surface product page prematurely went live on Microsoft's site a few hours ago, the company just officially announced that the 10.6-inch, ARM-powered slate will go up for pre-order at 9AM PT today, starting at $499 for the 32GB version. The 64GB model will cost $599.
To be clear, these prices do not include that snazzy Touch Cover with the flat, pressure-sensitive keys. Rather, it'll be sold separately for $120. Ditto for the more traditional Type Cover keyboard, which is priced at $130. If you already know you want the packaged deal, however, you can buy the 64GB tablet and Touch Cover as a bundle for $699. Lastly, when Surface starts shipping on October 26th, you'll be able to buy it on Microsoft.com or at a Microsoft Store (if you happen to have one in your neck of the woods). If you're hankering for hands-on photos, we'll redirect you to the first look we published the day Surface was announced. Hopefully, though, we'll soon get a review unit so that we can supplement our preview with meaty, real-world impressions.

Microsoft has finally revealed the pricing of its upcoming Surface tablet to a small group of journalists, including Time's Harry McCracken, who wrote in an Oct. 16 posting that the device's 32GB version will retail for $499 (or $599 with the flexible keyboard cover) and the 64GB one for $699 (cover included). Preorders will apparently begin by midday Oct. 16. Microsoft unveiled Surface over the summer but kept the pricing a secret until now. That information vacuum led some to hope against hope that Microsoft would attempt something radical and price Surface extraordinarily low—$199, perhaps—in an attempt to undercut Apple's iPad. While that didn't happen, Surface at least matches its biggest rival's low- and high-end price points. The WiFi-only, 16GB version of the iPad retails for $499, while the WiFi-only, 64GB version costs $699 (iPads with a cellular connection cost a bit more)."A related article at BGR explains why the Surface is Microsoft's latest attempt to re-invent itself.

Will the computers of the future be tools for freedom or for censorship? An insightful Ars editorial examines this question in depth, concluding that Apple's walled garden approach to iOS is fundamentally flawed and thus Microsoft should reconsider their plans to apply the same model to WinRT. The authors are careful to present a nuanced analysis that adequately weighs the competing interests of security, convenience, and user freedom, ultimately concluding that Mac OS X and Android offer better models because while their walled gardens are on by default, they offer supported mechanisms to opt-out if desired, thereby offering users the same security and convenience benefits without sacrificing user freedom in the process."A similar article by software engineer Casey Muratori looks at the effect Windows 8's closed distribution system will have on game development. The restrictions involved in getting approval for the Windows Store would preclude 2011's game of the year, Skyrim, from appearing there, as well as 2012's top candidates. The requirements contain clauses that would cut out huge swathes of the video game industry, like this one: "Your app must not contain content or functionality that encourages, facilitates, or glamorizes illegal activity."

Valve doubles number of approved titles to 21 due to large number of 'high quality' submissions
The second wave of games have made their way through Steam Greenlight after being approved by the community.
Whilst only ten games were initially scheduled to pass through the user voting service, more than 21 titles have been greenlit.
Valve said that given the number of high quality titles submitted and the planned ship date for top-ranking titles, it had decided to more than double the number of approved games.
The successful games will be released at various times over the next few months whilst development on some titles nears completion.

October 16th, 2012, 00:29 Posted By: wraggster
In 1963 Coca-Cola introduced a diet version of their ubiquitous fizzy drink to the American public for the first time. Despite fears that it would cannibalise Coke's existing marketshare, 'Tab' (later usurped in 1982 by its successor, Diet Coke) was a roaring success for the company, succeeding both by capitalising on a new, health-conscious consumer-base and appealing to existing Coke drinkers eager to try something different.Fast-forward 50 years and Sports Interactive are taking a leaf out of the soft-drink giant's book. In the biggest shake-up of the series since leaving Eidos in 2004, Football Manager 2013 will come bundled with Football Manager Classic - a Football Manager 'lite' aimed at a growing community of time conscious football management fans. It won't make you late for work, it won't make you miss deadlines. It won't even cause arguments with your girlfriend (and it won't make you fat or rot your teeth either). While my opening analogy may be specious, what particularly intrigues about FMC is what's implied by its very existence. Coke is bad for you. So is Football Manager. Here's something else to try. It's a bold step for a developer that has for so long cherished complexity as a byword for progress. Football Manager 13 - and I'm talking about the 'full fat' version here - continues much in the same vein as its predecessors, adding more and more variables and a finishing gloss of cosmetic sheen to the database we've all loved interacting with for the past 20 years. Fans will love it - and rightly so, as it's undoubtedly the most in-depth and fascinating football management sim that's ever been made. You'll work up a sweat just trying to get your head around the new training system
Training has been completely revamped, and improvements continue to be made to the more repetitive parts of the game (I'm looking at you, press conferences). What stands out most is the changes made to the matchday experience. Managing from the touchline is much easier than in previous versions, and an ingenious, Twitter-inspired 'match feed' offers short messages from your assistant about the team's performance. For the first time I felt like my involvement with the game didn't pause when the players stepped out onto the pitch - and the game is more absorbing as a result.A souped-up, steam-integrated multiplayer offering and a new scenario-based challenge mode complete the package (who said annual release cycles were unsustainable?) but it's FM13's little brother that justifiably demands the most attention. After all this time spent chasing realism and depth at all costs, why change now?To some extent, the motivation is obvious - if anything you could argue it's a wonder FMC hasn't come out sooner. If I had a penny for every time I'd heard someone reminisce about their 'Champman' glory days, or read a user comment along the lines of 'used to luv it too difficult now - Kennedy Bakircioglu legend! ROFL!' I'd be a rich man. It makes a product that harks back to previous versions something of a no-brainer for Sports Interactive - especially considering the success of their ideologically-paired mobile iterations.Having had the best part of the week getting to grips with the game, even as a purist, I couldn't help but be impressed, and to describe it simply as a slimmed-down FM is to do it a grand disservice. FMC retains all the best parts from the evolution of the series over the last ten years, but manages to revive the simplicity and speed with which you could navigate the game back when it was Championship Manager. Add in a sexy new interface (that's right, sexy) and many will find it hard to turn back once they've had a taste.

Greenlight has curated its second batch of indie games worthy of launching on Steam, and instead of the 10 we expected, this round sees 21 new titles. Greenlit games include AirBuccaneers, Forge, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Octodad: Dadliest Catch and The Stanley Parable: HD Remix.
"This second wave of titles was originally targeted to include at least 10 titles," Valve writes. "Given the number and quality of games submitted, and the ship date of many of the top-ranking titles, the decision was made to increase the size of this group."
These 21 games join the 10 previously greenlit titles; of those, only McPixel has launched on Steam so far. In September, Steam had more than 2,000 games to sort through on Greenlight, with 800 live for public voting. The Greenlight system is far from perfect for some indie developers, but Steam may still be refining its system, if the increased number of greenlit games is any indication.

Electronic Arts has stumbled across an interesting promotional tool for its Origin digital distribution service: accidentally give away thousands of games. Last week, the publisher set up a promotion offering US gamers a $20 discount token for taking part in an online survey. However, once participants had spent their reward, the code remained active, allowing wily users to download dozens of titles for nothing, as well as distribute the unsecure code to friends.Naturally, news quickly spread and once it made it onto Reddit, Origin was hit by thousands of greedy gamers filling their hard drives with titles like Dead Space, Sim City 4, Mass Effect 2 and Spore. The fun continued throughout Saturday and Sunday until EA discovered the error and leapt into action. “The coupon code is now expired; we’ll honor all sales made with the coupon code over the weekend,” explained Community Manager Sam Houston, via a forum thread. “Hope fans enjoy their games,” he added merrily, while perhaps looking across the room at a colleague quietly clearing his desk. The Origin service has proved controversial in the past, with some gamers labelling its terms and conditions Draconian and dismissing the client as spyware. The free games weekend may well have done wonders for PR. As one Twitter user put it, “EA accidentally gave away tons of games […] Am I the only one thinking it’s probably increased Origin useage (sic) by 500%?”However, EA’s generosity toward those who exploited its mistake hasn’t gone down well with everyone. Some of those who filled out the survey just before the offer was withdrawn feel they have unfairly missed out. “So the guys that scammed the system get to keep their multiple free/discounted games and those of us that were honest and filled out your survey get squat?” asked one user on the Origin forum, accurately. “The coupon is now expired,” responded a forlorn Houston. On the bright side for survey haters, it might be quite a while before Origin bothers them again.

A proposed EU directive on energy efficiency is likely to threaten the development of discrete graphics cards
Figures released by Nordic Hardware show that the guidelines are likely to cap graphics card GPU performance at 5001MHz for devices using a 512-bit memory bus or 6667MHz for those using a 384-bit bus.
In addition, energy efficiency requirements will now be defined in relation to the cards memory bandwidth, regardless of how they might affect the performance of the end product.
One senior figure at AMD expressed concerns to Nordic Hardware, noting that many current generation graphics cards, including AMD’s HD 7700 and 7900 devices, are unable to meet these requirements.
The laws, which could be implemented by the end of 2014, are expected to put unrealistic demands of graphics card manufacturers who will face heavy fines if they fail to comply.

Microsoft confirmed some time ago that a Netflix app would be available for Windows 8, and it turns out it's available well before the big October 26th launch date. Netflix announced today that the app is now available for download from the Windows Store for those who've already upgraded to an early version of the OS. Expectedly, the app matches the overall style of Windows 8, and Netflix says that it's also made the app more efficient to cut down on both CPU and battery usage. It's quick to point out that this is only the first version of the app, though, noting that it has "more updates and ideas in the pipeline for later this fall."
