Microsoft has made hardware for quite a while, but not much of it as visible as the Surface; now, it looks like there's more where that came from. Dupple writes:"Steve Ballmer told the BBC: 'Is it fair to say we're going to do more hardware? Obviously we are... Where we see important opportunities to set a new standard, yeah we'll dive in.' The chief executive's comments came ahead of a Windows 8 launch event in New York, following which Microsoft's Surface tablet will go on sale. News other devices are likely to follow may worry some of the firm's partners. Mr Ballmer caused a stir when he revealed in June that his company was making its own family of tablet computers — one offering extended battery-life powered by an Arm-based chip, the other using Intel's technology to offer a deeper Windows experience."

A new version of the Trusted Platform Module, called TPM2 or TPM 2.0 by Microsoft, has apparently been designed specifically for the release of Windows 8 this week. The details of this new standard have been kept secret. But a major update to the original TPM standard, which came out 10 years ago, seems to have been very quietly released on the Trusted Computing web site (FAQ) earlier this month. Following in the footsteps of the original, this version is quite a challenging read (security through incomprehensibility?). But this new version also seems to support some controversial crypto algorithms that were made public by the 'State Encryption Management Bureau' of China for the first time about 2 years ago. This is roughly the time that Microsoft seems to have begun working in earnest on TPM2, Windows 8, and probably even Surface. But that's probably just a coincidence. This crypto is controversial because of serious EU concerns with domestic restrictions on the implementation, use, and importation of cryptography in China

Microsoft has launched its new operating system, Windows 8.
At the launch event in New York, Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer told attendees that "Windows 8 shatters perceptions of what a PC now really is" and he was not wrong.
At its core, Windows 8 embraces the emergent tablet market. It utilises touch-screen and not just as a supported feature - the entire user interface is designed with touch at its heart. Gone is the traditional desktop, to be replaced by a series of panelled windows that will be familiar to anyone who owns an Xbox. The difference here is that the panels will be customised to link to websites and social networks as well as to applications.
In addition, Microsoft has integrated an app store called Windows Store, which will allow users to purchase and download software in a manner similar to Apple's service.
Almost as a demonstration of this commitment to a changing marketplace, the launch of Windows 8 was followed by that of Microsoft's flagship device for the new operating system, the Surface.
Designed primarily as a showcase, the Surface is a high-end tablet that runs Windows 8 RT - the version that's designed to work with ARM-based processors - and carries a 10.6-inch display with a resolution of 1366x768 and uses a 1.6GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 T30 quad core CPU accompanied by 2GB of RAM. An Intel version is expected to follow.
"We've truly reimagined WIndows and kicked off a new era for Microsoft and a new era for our customers," said Ballmer at the launch.
"You can imagine what you own Windows 8 device will look like and how incredibly personal it will be."

Attempts to create truly small gaming desktops usually involve at least some kind of performance hit. Even HP's category-bending Firebird, one of the few stand-out examples, had to use toned-down graphics to succeed in a tiny enclosure. Digital Storm might have broken the trend towards sacrifice with its new Bolt desktop: although it's just 3.6 inches wide and 14 inches tall, the Bolt can cram in as much as a GeForce GTX 680 and will even let gamers upgrade the graphics like they would in a full-size PC. The seemingly logic-defying (if also finger-defying) case still allows room for as much as an overclocked 4.6GHz Core i7, 16GB of RAM and storage options that meld a spinning hard drive with up to two SSDs and a DVD burner. Digital Storm isn't even setting an absurd base price, but it's in the cost that we finally see the catch to the miniaturization tricks. The $999 entry-level Bolt carries a modest 3.1GHz Core i3, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and GeForce GTX 650 Ti, while it takes a staggering $1,949 to get a fully decked-out Core i7 system with a GTX 680. Those prices might be worthwhile for anyone who has ever strained while lugging a traditional tower to a game tourney.

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board has a huge responsibility -- to rate and regulate the entire medium of video games -- but only has so many resources with which to do so. With the rise of digital delivery, it's become increasingly difficult to fulfill the task of rating every single title that comes out, but the ESRB is betting on a new initiative that'll help streamline that process. The new "Digital Rating Service" employs an online questionnaire to determine a wide variety of criteria, beyond just age-appropriateness: content, interactivity, and privacy settings (whether or not it shares your data). As the name implies, the DRS specifically applies to digital delivery services: Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network (on PS3 and Vita), PlayStation Certified devices, Nintendo's eShop (on the Wii, DS, and 3DS), and Windows 8.
That last one sounds new because it is -- Windows 8 games are now part of the ESRB's rating system. In addition to the new initiative and new platform, the ESRB is also adding more guidance to its game ratings. "Shares Info," "Shares Locations," and "Users Interact" are all now part of ESRB guidance, per the changing nature of digital, portable games. The ESRB says its new system will help to streamline its rating process for both itself and game creators, and this will resultant in faster ratings for consumers.

The latest reinvention of the SimCity franchise has been given a release date on PC and Mac.
SimCity, as EA is calling it, will be released on March 8th.
The game is powered by GlassBox which EA describes as “the most complex simulation engine in its class”.
“SimCity will engage an entirely new generation of PC and Mac gamers as they take charge of their own customized cities,” EA’s press blurb reads. “This is a new SimCity that offers a deeper, richer game than ever before.
“It has been built from the ground up to be an online connected experience, with the new GlassBox engine driving the most authentic simulation ever seen. It has a model-like look and feel that makes players want to reach in, poke, prod, and tinker around. Maxis has put the simulation right in front of the player so that they can see the consequences of their actions and really dig in to see how the systems work.
“Finally, for the first time in SimCity franchise history, SimCity introduces multicity play, which brings a new dimension as players’ decisions not only affect their city, but have a ripple effect across the entire SimCity World.”

Boardgames are getting a shot in the arm thanks to the proliferation of digital versions across consoles and iOS, according to manufacturers we speak to in our issue 247 (out tomorrow) feature, Table To Tablet. While the popularity of the boardgame has never been in question, the growing number of touchscreen enabled devices – and the broad market reach of those products – has given boardgame manufacturers an ideal way to expose their games to a new audience, as well as attracting existing fans with app versions of their favourite games.

Asus and other Microsoft OEM partners have also launched their own versions of Windows RT tablets that will compete with Microsoft's Surface. It's interesting to see the different design approaches being taken, some of which are similar to Android devices currently on the market. The Asus Vivo Tab RT, for example, is based on a 1.3GHz Tegra 3 SoC with 2GB of DDR3 memory, 32GB or 64GB of on board Flash storage, and looks a lot like their Transformer Prime 10-inch slate. The internal electronics are similar to Surface, with NVIDIA's Tegra 3 claiming the lion's share of Windows RT designs at launch. Microsoft's new touch-centric OS handles smoothly on the tablet and performance looks to be impressive, especially with respect to multitasking and application switching."There's also the newly-launched Samsung Galaxy Note II (Android-based, and a so called "phablet," rather than a tablet), the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga (an upcoming Windows RT tablet with a keyboard permanently attached), and the Archos 101 XS.

Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts has seen his new Kickstarter project Star Citizen cruise past its target goal of $500,000 26 days before its deadline.
Presently having secured $517,336 from over 11,000 backers, PC space flight game Star Citizen is currently enjoying much attention as something of a Kickstarter celebrity.
It was launched on Kickstarter last week, notably shortly after Roberts told Develop the most prominent crowdfunding platform was not for him.
The game has also raised over $1.3 million on its own website.
Star Citizen's Kickstarter page can be found here.

The upcoming Minecraft 1.4.1 patch due this Thursday, 25th October fixes a number of bugs including "wet wolves looking way too scary."Easy boy...
Apparently no one told Mojang that stuff is supposed to be scarier around Halloween, but who am I to question the decisions of the industry's most successful indie studio?Elsewhere, the patch fixes some more practical issues like a bug causing mobs to suffocate and fall through wooden floors. The full list of changes, as detailed byMojang, is as follows: - Fixed mobs glitching through wooden floors
- Fixed players glitching through Beacons
- Fixed Redstone Repeaters getting stuck in 'on' state
- Bats spawn less frequently
- A number of minor font fixes
- Activated the Wither painting
- Fixed wet wolves looking way too scary
- Tweaked naming costs in the Anvil
- Tweaked enchantment points reward for smelting
- Fixed bug that allowed any item to be placed in the armor slots
- Fixed mob spawners spawning too quickly

About a year ago, when Ultrabooks were first starting to go on sale, ASUS was one of the first out of the gate with some lightweight, Intel-approved ultraportables. Since then, it's released a handful of iterations, including redesigned models with improved keyboards and sharper screens. That's a lot for a 12-month period, but there's one area where it fell behind: it tended to ignore larger-screened ultraportables, even as its competitors started selling models with 14- and 15-inch screens. That changed today, as the company announced three new Zenbooks, the 14-inch UX42VS and the 15-inch UX52VS and U500VZ, all of which will go on sale next month. Though the company hasn't issued granular pricing for each possible configuration, we know that prices in the US will range from $699 at the low end all the way up to $2,000.
So what do these have to offer, aside from a larger footprint? For starters, the UX42VS weighs 1.9kg (4.19 pounds) and has a chassis that whittles down to 6mm. It makes room for an optical drive, unlike ASUS' smaller Zenbooks, and features NVIDIA GT645M graphics with 1GB of dedicated video memory. Like any other ultaportable worth its salt, it will be offered with Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, though this guys steps up to 6GB of RAM and up to 1TB of hybrid hard drive storage.
Moving on, the 15-inch UX525VS (pictured) has a Core i5 or i7 Ultrabook-grade CPU, up to 10GB of memory (!) and up to 1TB in hybrid hard drive storage. The graphics card is the same 645M as on the 14-inch model. As for the U500VZ, it isn't an Ultrabook at all, as it has a standard-voltage, quad-core Core i7 processor. Other specs include 8GB of memory, a 1080p display and a beefier GT650M GPU, this time with 2GB of video memory. Despite the horsepower, though, it weighs in at a relatively light 2kg (4.4 pounds) and measures 6mm thick. Finally, wrapping things up, ASUS still plans to sell touchscreen versions of its 11- and 13-inch Zenbook Prime Ultrabooks. No word on availability for any of these, but we'll follow up with more details as they come in.

A new investigation into tablet use puts gaming as the second most popular activity, just behind checking e-mails.
The study, which was commissioned and published by Google, found that 51.5 per cent of its participants used their tablet for gaming in a two-week period. Overall, gaming represented an average of 10.9 per cent of the total incidents of use.
Only checking e-mails had a more favourable combination of the number of participants and the number of incidents: 84.5 per cent and 18.9 per cent respectively.
The report notes that, while its results are broadly similar to an earlier study conducted by Nielsen, it found that gaming was apparently more popular than watching video and social networking.
"By better understanding current tablet activities and their context, these findings may serve as a basis for anyone designing and developing applications and sites for tablets," the report notes

Valve’s Steam Workshop celebrated its first birthday this week, so what has the user-submitted content application accomplished in its first year?
Workshop started out with player’s creating custom items for Team Fortress 2, and has since grown to support different styles of content submission in a variety of games.
There are 16 shipped titles at current, with more on the way, and nearly 300,000 items including models, animations, maps, levels, scenarios, and entire games made in GameMaker Studio.
Steam users have racked up a total of 55m downloads during the year as well.
Valve concludes in its official blog post that the firm plans on continuing to expand on the growing program with more tools, more ways for content contributors and customers to communicate, and more games and content creators in general.

"In a YouTube interview released by Microsoft, co-founder Bill Gates offered a few hints of where Microsoft plans on taking Windows in coming years. 'It's evolving literally to be a single platform,' he said, referring to how Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 share a kernel, file system, graphics support, and other elements. At least in theory, that will allow developers to port apps from the desktop/tablet OS to the smartphone OS with relatively little work. The two operating systems already share the same design aesthetic, with Start screens composed of colorful tiles linked to applications. Gates also praised natural user interfaces — which include touch and voice — while taking a subtle dig at Apple's iPad and other tablets on the market. 'People want to consume their mail, reading, video anywhere, and they want it to be awfully simple,' he said. 'But you want to incorporate touch without giving up the kind of mouse, keyboard capability that's just so natural in most settings.'"
