Football Manager Classic stole the show in our Football Manager 2013 review. Not only does it distil Football Manager for a time-pressed audience put off by the series' increasing complexity, Classic reinvigorated FM for a long-time fan. It helped reviewer Jack Arnott find the fun in football management games again."The question now is where the series goes from here," Arnott wrote. "Football Manager offers the most detailed and in-depth management experience ever made, as it does every year. But is that what most of us really want?"Each year the full game gets more complex, more will defect to Classic," he predicted. "And if Classic takes off (as I think it will), it can't be long before it will justify a release in its own right. Will SI continue to invest in the full game if its audience is overtaken by its little sister?"Yes; core Football Manager won't be affected by whatever success Classic has. What's more, Sports Interactive won't break Classic apart from the core installments of Football Manager on PC."It won't be broken out on PC," Sports Interactive studio director Miles Jacobson told me yesterday afternoon. "The plan is to offer a value for money proposition that is greater than any other in the industry."Last year the average time spent on Football Manager was 129 hours, he said, and this year there are two-and-a-half game modes more: Classic, Challenge and the Network mode. "The plan is very much to keep them all in the same package together," he said.

A dedicated modder by the name of Max has begun recreating Interplay's 1996 first-person PC spaceship shooter Descent using Unreal Engine 3 via the Unreal Development Kit.Descent was notable for taking place in elaborate 3D labyrinths, unlike most spaceship combat games that took place in the barren vacuum of outer space. The game's freeform movement across six axis was disorienting and refreshing. I remember going back to more traditional shooters felt archaic and limiting after Descent and wondered why more games didn't follow in its footsteps. Sure there were a couple of sequels, but the series fizzled out by 2000's Descent 3.As was the case with the Half-Life fan remake Black Mesa, The Descent Unreal mod - dubbed Descent to UDK for now - isn't going to be an exact remake and will feature some embellishments. Max would like to retell the original game's story, but offer more diverse gameplay and emphasise the game's horror elements. New weapons may be added, too.

Cloud gaming has arrived on Windows 8 with the launch of Agawi's GameZen app.
Since Windows 8 operates on a single core, developers who release titles on GameZen can reach an audience of users on PCs, tablets, and smartphones.
Agawi claims its app is launching with over 1,000 games ready to play, with a focus on mid-core titles.
“GameZen is a huge opportunity for both developers and gamers,” said Agawi executive chairman Peter Relan.
“We’re focusing on connecting Windows 8 users with their favorite games and helping them find new games they love, for a fun and accessible gaming experience. Developers also benefit from a huge new audience available to them and the Windows 8 devices that are extremely well-suited to gaming, like the Surface tablet.”

Mozilla Firefox has fallen below 20 per cent maket share for a second time in just six months as Internet Explorer sees continued growth.
The statistics released by Net Marketshare show that both Firefox and Google Chrome suffered during the month of October, which closed with Firefox sitting at 19.99 per cent and Chrome at just 18.55 per cent.
Meanwhile, Internet Explorer's usage has continued to rise, climbing half a point to 54.13 per cent and its highest level since September 2011.
The figures also highlight the continued decline in desktop web browsing.
Whilst not a significant drop by any means, mobile browsers accounted for a 10.3 per cent market share, meaning desktop browsing dropped below the 90 per cent mark and its lowest level of all time.
Of course, this is a trend widely expected considering the growth in popularity and market for tablet, smartphone and other mobile devices.

A Facebook flaw, which made some accounts accessible without the need for a password, has been exposed.
A message posted to the Hacker News website contained a search string that, when typed into Google, presented a list of links to some 1.32 million Facebook accounts. A number of these could be logged into simply by clicking the link – without the need for a password.
The message featured a search syntax that exposed a system used by Facebook that lets users quickly log into their accounts.
Facebook has moved quickly to cut off this process. The social network’s security engineer Matt Jones added the following comment to the Hacker News message: "For a search engine to come across these links, the content of the emails would need to have been posted online."
Jones said that most of the links exposed would have already expired, but added: “Due to some of these links being disclosed, we've turned the feature off until we can better ensure its security for users whose email contents are publicly visible."

Verizon rolled out an LTE-equipped version of its smaller counterpart a few months ago, and now Sprint has announced that it'll begin offering the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with 4G LTE on November 11th. That will be available for $550 (sans contract), and you'll be able to activate it on one of the carrier's new month-to-month tablet rate plans, which run from $15 a month for 300MB of data to $80 for 12GB -- Sprint says it's also waiving activation fees on all 3G/4G tablets "for a limited time." As for the tablet itself, it comes with a speedier 1.5GHz dual-core processor than the WiFi-only model (which clocked in at 1GHz), but looks to otherwise be the same 10.1-inch device, right down to the now somewhat dated Android 4.0 for an OS -- no word on a planned upgrade to 4.1 or 4.2 just yet.

Were Minecraft a multiplayer FPS it would probably be Ace of Spades, a game coming to Steam in December.Ace of Spades not only has a cutesy voxelly world like Minecraft, it has a build-anything-anywhere mantra too.So while your team of 16 fights the other team of 16, you can knock together a fortress or dig a tunnel or erect some walls. And then you can shoot the enemy's hard work to smithereens.Ace of Spades was indie-grown but since October had RuneScape house Jagex whipping it into shape. Looks like the graphics have improved, judging by the screenshots.Ace of Spades has also been playable for a while in prototype form. Since April it's been downloaded 2.5 million times, and in September there were 550,000 active monthly users. It was free then, of course - on Steam there will be a "small one-off fee".

The Longest Journey creator Ragnar Tornquist is making a new Longest Journey game called Dreamfall Chapters.Ragnar Tornquist was until recently the man in charge of Funcom's inventive but struggling MMO The Secret World. He handed over the reins in September, later teasing that "of course I'm working on other ideas".Tornquist has established a new studio called Red Thread Games at which to make Dreamfall Chapters, but will also retain his creative director role on The Secret World.Tornquist has licensed The Longest Journey IP from Funcom. Red Thread intends to fund the project independently.Tweeted Tonquist this afternoon: "We've also received 1M NOK ($175,000) from the Norwegian Film Institute to help fund the first stages of preproduction. Yay!"Dreamfall: The Longest Journey had snow and coats. Snoats.
The press release declared Funcom's "commitment to the development of online games" as the reason why The Longest Journey was licensed to Tornquist's Red Thread. Does that mean Dreamfall Chapters will be an online game? The Chapters part of the title does suggest a kind of episodic structure. Or perhaps Funcom means The Longest Journey licence was granted because Tornquist agreed to continue working on The Secret World, an online game."I'm very excited to finally have the opportunity to continue the The Longest Journey saga," Tornquist commented."Ever since we ended Dreamfall on a nail-biting cliffhanger, players have been rightfully demanding a sequel, and my deal with Funcom will finally make that possible. I'm extremely grateful to Funcom for this unique and exciting opportunity, and I can't wait to dive back into the universe I helped create more than a decade ago, and continue the story players have been waiting for these past six years."No game details, platforms or a release date were mentioned for Dreamfall Chapters. The Longest Journey was a well loved point-and-click adventure game from the year 2000.Eurogamer's Gestalt awarded it 9/10.Follow-up Dreamfall: The Longest Journey was less well received, partly because it ditched point-and-click controls and decided for some odd reason to include combat. Rock, Paper, Shotgun's John Walker looked back at Dreamfall: The Longest Journey last year for Eurogamer and found a game with a message worth hearing.Eurogamer's original Dreamfall: The Longest Journey review from 2006 awarded 5/10.

Version three of the successful paid Prison Architect alpha build is upon us like a sewage-drenched Andy Dufresne in the night.Burly new additions are fog of war and CCTV, plus a load of bug fixes and small changes.Fog of war affects your visibility of an area. Guards are your eyes, so if an area is well patrolled, it'll stay clearly visible. But fog of war creeps back over time, so if an area loses guard coverage, visibility will start to go.CCTV ties into fog of war; you can install cameras to be your eyes in areas that don't really need guarding, like store rooms, offices and power facilities. CCTV cameras give a cone of visibility that sweeps slowly from side to side as the camera does. You will need a guard to watch CCTV camera output at a CCTV monitor desk, though. But one guard can handle multiple camera inputs, which is efficient. These changes are demonstrated and detailed by Prison Architect maker Introversion in the following video. Fog of war was also something Introversion talked about during its Eurogamer Expo session, which we videoed.

Tune into the chatter around Windows 8 and it won't be long before you start hearing about keyboard shortcuts. Instead of forcing us to replicate long swipe gestures using a mouse (which would be cruel to all concerned), Microsoft is putting forward these little key combos as the primary means of navigation on traditional desktop PCs that don't have touchscreens. Right now, I'm in the middle of trying to adapt to this -- and like our Windows 8 review concludes, the curve is steep. In my case, matters are complicated by the fact that I use a triple-monitor setup for work, which perhaps makes me more sensitive to UI issues. But regardless of how many displays are hooked up to it, there genuinely are some interface niggles in this OS. Despite having mastered the basic shortcuts, I'm still having to reach for my mouse way too often, and the arm ache is starting to dampen the good vibes left over from my last diary post. So, join me after the break and at the very least you'll get to observe someone flailing around in search of answers.

The next batch of titles to receive the Steam Greenlight treatment will be announced later this month.
At least 10 more games are expected to get the go ahead from Valve on November 30th, according to a news post from the company.
On top of the games, Valve is aiming to reveal at least five software picks for inclusion in the aforementioned grouping.
The community-driven PC indie games service, which launched in late August, has approved over 30 titles thus far - with a couple of the picks already made available through the digital distributer.

Google and Asustek remain cagey on revealing actual sales figures.
Sales of Asustek’s Nexus 7 are creeping ever closer to the one million per month mark, yet the Taiwanese manufacturer remains reluctant to reveal specific sales figures.
Having caused something of a stir upon its release earlier this year due to its low starting price of $199, both Google and Asustek have been hesitant in coming forward with actual sales figures for the siven-inch tablet. However, Asustek’s executives offered the most revealing indication yet at the company’s third-quarter earning conference earlier this week.
David Chang, chief financial officer at Asustek, commented: “At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600-700K. This latest month, it was close to one million.”
Earlier this month, a number of tech blogs were suggesting third-quarter sales estimates of 800,000-1 million Nexus 7s based on an analysis of Google’s revenue figures, yet Asustek’s recent comments indicate that the actual number was most likely higher.
Meanwhile, research firm Strategy Analytics revealed that 25 million tablets were sold worldwide in the third-quarter, with Apple’s iPad shifting 14 million units during that period.

LG has introduced its Touch 10 ET83 monitor, designed for use with Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system.
The 23-inch monitor has a ten-point touchscreen, enabling users to take full advantage of Windows 8 features. As well as being able to use all ten fingers at once, the monitor supports a capacitive stylus for those looking for a more precise interaction.
“This is a compelling new product that re-imagines the touch experience and shows that LG is an industry leader in developing the next generation of touch monitor products,” said J J Lee, executive vice president and head of the IT Business Unit, LG.
“Smartphones and tablets have already proven that consumers are ready to fully embrace touch features. Our 10-point touchscreen takes it one step further by exponentially expanding the range of interactive possibilities. We believe this technology will excite and inspire software developers and users alike.”
The LG Touch 10 will be available in Korea later this month, followed by ‘markets in Europe and elsewhere’.

The FCC may have spoiled the surprise months ago, but Archos has taken to Facebook to officially reveal the new member of its Elements range -- the Archos 80 Cobalt. As you may have guessed from the familiar size codification, the WiFi-only slate sports an 8-inch capacitive screen filled with 1024 x 768 pixels, supporting 1080p video playback. The other specs you'll want to know include the dual-core processor running at 1.6GHz, 1GB of RAM and 8 gigs of on-board storage, expandable with a microSD card of up to 64GB. Modest 2-megapixel and 0.3-megapixel shooters occupy the back and front of the 0.48-inch (12mm) thick tablet, respectively, which weighs in at a solid one pound (470g). There's no word on a release date or pricing for this ICS device, but we'd imagine the answers are "soon" and "under $200." Any more than that, and we can't see people choosing it over, say, a Nexus 7, even if it does have an extra inch on the competition.
