Windows 8 has not had a smooth launch. Microsoft's fledgling operating system was still in beta when Valve boss Gabe Newell branded it a “catastrophe for everyone in the PC space”. His comments were quickly echoed by World of Warcraft developer Blizzard, while Minecraft creator Notch denounced the OS as being “very, very bad for indie developers”.One of the biggest concerns surrounding Windows 8 is its move towards a closed gaming marketplace. Users are now encouraged to buy apps through the Windows Store, an emulation of the iOS App Store model that allows Microsoft to regulate game releases and take a cut of the profit."They've got Apple envy, big style,” co-founder of developer Introversion Software Chris Delay told Eurogamer. “In the past they were the successful ones, but then they sat down and watched while Apple took over. It's left Microsoft looking old and behind the times. They look at Apple and the iOS Store and see the royalties they're taking on this closed platform.”A storefront owned and regulated by Microsoft is something that worries Miles Jacobson, boss of Football Manager developer Sports Interactive."I actually think Gabe might have seen the internal email that I sent here on Windows 8." It was "difficult" to be a seasoned PC developer in a world where Microsoft was no longer welcoming, he added. "Personally I don't think they still want that market to exist,” Jacobson said.

Oldschool Dave is remaking the Marine missions of tense and terrific shooter Aliens vs. Predator (1999) as a Crysis 2 mod.He posted a tech demonstration video of his Aliens vs. Marine project in the CryDev.net forum (video below). In short, it looks lovely; textures, lighting - all the guff and fluff of 2012 is there to be seen (but no actual aliens - there's no combat in the video).Aliens vs. Marine will be for PC only. It won't have auto-healing, scripted events, quick-saves or wall hacks. It will have "really fast" aliens, additional objectives and complete statistics. Here's a video of the AVP Marine mission from 1999:

Peter Molyneux has delayed the announcement of his next project, 'Cooperation', until "early next week" due to the "immense success" of social game Curiosity.
The announcement of the new 22 Cans project was originally due this afternoon.Curiosity is the recently-released iOS app which has users globally working together to chisel away at a giant block, working slowly towards revealing its "amazing" contents. CVGhas been tracking its progress here.
Molyneux told BeefJack via e-mail today: "We are learning an incredible amount from our first experiment Curiosity - What's Inside the Cube. Not only in terms of player motivation and behaviour but more importantly the technical side of running something as concurrent as Curiosity.
"Well over a million people want to explore their curiosity, over half of those have been able to log in to our servers. At its peak there were 27,546 all tapping away simultaneously, more than 6 million firecrackers have been bought and over 190,000,000 cubelets have been destroyed."

Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 together mark a rare confluence for Microsoft: they represent the first instance of the company's desktop and phone platforms sharing the same browser base, and that has wide-reaching implications for what developers can do. The Redmond team doesn't want anyone plunging headlong into web apps without knowing what to expect, however, and it just reminded us in a blog post that there are still a few off-limits areas for Internet Explorer 10 on the mobile side. Not surprisingly, elements that demand a truly big screen or a windowed interface won't fly -- there's nowhere to drag-and-drop from or open a new window to. A few other aspects are more likely to catch web developers off-guard, such as the lack of in-line video, a handful of touch inputs, ActiveX and the level of file access. The most important common ground stems from simply having a modern rendering engine whose HTML5 and CSS3 support will prevent any rude shocks. There's much more at the source link, although Microsoft and designers may just be happy that any Windows Phone web development is a question of finding those few things that won't work, rather than reinventing the wheel.

You can't see our New York City office right now, but it's something of a laptop menagerie. We just finished reviewing a laptop whose screen flips inside its hinge, and now we're testing an Ultrabook with a touchscreen, along with a notebook whose screen folds all the way back. The Toshiba Satellite U925t($1,150) is yet another breed of Windows 8 hardware. It's a slider, to be exact, which is to say its 12.5-inch screen slides out and up to reveal a full-sized keyboard. It's nice, in theory, because you can use it as a tablet without having to worry about packing a separate keyboard. But unlike the Dell XPS 12 orLenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13, which can also be used in tablet mode, the screen here is always exposed. As you can imagine, too, that propped-up display has a very real effect on the typing experience. Given all that, is there any reason to consider this over other, similarly priced Windows 8 convertibles? Could there perhaps be any performance benefits, or advantages in screen quality? Meet us after the break where we'll hash it out.

It's been a brisk and mostly enjoyable two weeks since the launch of Windows 8 and the start of this diary. Whereas my last entry was all about productivity, there's now been ample opportunity to relax with the new OS, play a few titles in Steam, and run some general performance benchmarks. These not-so-onerous tasks were completed using an AMD FX-based triple-monitor gaming rig upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro, with all games running at 5,760 x 1,080 and max detail settings, and all the hardware was kept constant to allow a before-and-after comparison. You'll find the results after the break, along with a few broader impressions of what Windows 8 might mean for an early-adopting desktop gamer.

Trion Worlds aims to reinvent the MMO space with each title, and is using free-to-play to attract a wider audience.
James Batchelor finds out how this model will benefit titles like the online RPG? Rift and strategy game End of Nations.
What are you doing to prepare for the launch of your first free-to-play product, MMO strategy game End of Nations?
Scott Hartsman, CCO: What we are really asking here is what does ‘launch’ mean in a free service? I would assert: nothing. For a game using the F2P model, it’s a relic. That’s actually great news for both players and developers.
Much of what makes that model so compelling is that it returns a lot of flexibility to the developer’s hands. You don’t need to make a specific street date, and therefore don’t have to make as many of the traditionally poor compromises that developers have to make in getting there in the ‘launch big, launch once’ model.
For a game like End of Nations, it’s best to think in milestones, and there’s no standard way to do it. That’s the beauty – we get to make the best decision for the product and its audience at the time of making the decision, not six, nine, or 12 months ahead of time.
Eventually NDAs come off, invites stop being required, the service is up 24/7, online sales are occurring for real money, and there comes a point when you’re satisfied with the game’s performance that you won’t have to reset progress and restore currency purchases to players.
That entire time, it’s been live, and it probably ‘launched’ by traditional standards very early in that process, but the ongoing tuning, testing, and releasing continues forever.
You've been testing End of Nations over the summer. What has the feedback been like about the free and premium items/packages?
Chris Lena, End of Nations’ senior producer: End of Nations uses a dual currency system that allows most items to be purchased with our currency earned by playing the game as well as real money. This is not a completely new idea and players have been reacting well.
In End of Nations, you can get items either through the Armoury – where you manage your unit collection and build your company – or the Depot, which is more like a traditional store. It’s been really interesting to see which one of these avenues people choose. We have learned a lot about what to do to help players discover the Depot.
This year, you launched a free-to-play version of your MMORPG Rift called Rift Lite. What benefits have you found over a subscription model?
Hartsman: The response has been extremely positive, and we saw a sizeable uptick in account creations after we launched in February.
Rift Lite has been especially great for players who don’t have the cash to spend on multiple games every month. They can get in, play the first 20 levels without any time restrictions, and decide if it’s the game for them at their own leisure. It goes back to our core tenet that Rift should be as accessible as possible for any kind of gamer.
How can companies balance paid and free titles in their portfolio?
Hartsman: The key here is to build the game around the model that makes the most sense. There are titles like Rift where a subscription model enables development to deliver content on an unprecedented cadence so that is the direction we choose. With End of Nations our goal is to create a massive global community with no barrier to entry to engage in the battle for territory control, and for that free-to-play makes the most sense.
Is there a danger that free-to-play is simply flavour of the month and could diminish, or is the subscription model dead?
Hartsman: Everything we do is a test of a theory. That’s part of the fun of being independent in the world of online games. We get to try things.
Models are going to continue evolving over time. We’re in this for the long haul, and we’re going to keep experimenting with different models as they apply to various games, audiences, and platforms.
What’s most appealing to a fantasy MMO player may be different than what appeals to a player who enjoys third person online shooters in their living room on an Xbox 360, which may be yet different from what works for PC players playing an amazing social shooter.

Over 600 stores will be open at midnight on November 12th, with 150 stores extending their opening hours specially. This means Tesco will have the largest amount of stores open for the launch of this year’s most anticipated shooter.
Tesco’s flagship Cheshunt Extra store will be playing host to a monster truck kitted out with consoles so queuing gamers can play the game earlier and compete for Black Ops II merchandise.
Other Tesco stores will be joining in the celebrations by giving away goodies and providing food and drink for fans queuing in the cold.
“It’s been a big year for gaming releases and this is going to be a great climax,” said Tesco’s buying manager for entertainment games Nick Cooke.
“Thousands of gaming fans will be able to pick up Black Ops II the moment it’s released. We’re looking forward to a great atmosphere in stores up and down the country.”
The retailer has also confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops II is its most pre-ordered game of the year, beating EA’s FIFA 13.

If any game series could be described as a perfect match for Kickstarter’s crowdfunding revolution, it is surely Elite. Fans of the first three games have been clamouring for a sequel for over a decade now, and with the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for Elite: Dangerous, they can finally put their money where their mouths are – all £1.25 million of it.

'If Windows 8 and the Surface tablet flop, you'll see a shareholder revolt that will send Steve Ballmer packing by this time next year,' writes InfoWorld's Bill Snyder. 'First it was the netbook, then it was the Ultrabook. Microsoft, Intel, and the PC makers keep looking for a way to convince buyers they don't need an iPad or Android tablet. Neither initiative gained much traction, so Microsoft bet big on Windows 8 and the Surface. ... Maybe we're wrong, and buyers will decide that the new OS and the Microsoft's first serious venture into hardware are what they want. It would be a huge boost for the industry if it happens, but I'm not optimistic. ... There's been a string of bad quarters, and the stock has been frozen for nine years. At some point — I think we're getting really close — investors are going to demand a shakeup. When they do, it's going to be good-bye, Ballmer.

Consumers will soon switch from entertainment-focused devices such as the iPad to multi-functional convertible PCs, believes Lenovo's CEO.
Yang Yuanqing made the comments during a conference call on Thursday, stating that users will soon look for more versatile, multi-functional devices, replacing the demand for Apple's traditional tablets, which are focused primarily on entertainment.
The admission serves as little surprise considering Lenovo recently took the title of the world's leading PC maker.
Yuanging offered the suggestion during the call that consumers would make the leap to convertible PCs, such as the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, which also offers Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 8.
The CEO also highlighted that the consumer "emotional attachment" to devices such as the iPad was diminishing, which he believed to have been made evident by the "competitor's recent earnings announcement".
Whilst lacking confirmation, it is highly believed that Yuanging was referring to Apple's failure to meet Wall Street expectations for iPad sales.
He continued to question why consumers would choose to buy a tablet when they have the option of more power the familiarity of a standard keyboard and operating system that comes with a convertible device, which still offers the touchscreen capabilities made popular by tablet devices.
"I still believe that the Yoga type of convertible is more useable, more user-friendly. Definitely, that's the better product. That will be the future of the PC," said Yuanging.

On November 9th 2004, Mozilla launched the first version of its Firefox web browser.
Firefox was one of the first alternative browsers to really take on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and has firmly placed itself within the top browsers used today.
Currently, Firefox is the world’s third most popular browser, behind Internet Explorer and Chrome.
Reminiscing about the launch of Firefox 8 years ago, Mozilla’s blogreads: “We had the audacity to believe that we could change things. We believed that a community of people who understood the power of the Web, and who put people above profits, could build something amazing.”
Back to the present day, Mozilla says that it still sticks to its original hopes for the browser: “These days, hundreds of millions of people trust Firefox with their online lives and they encourage their friends and family to do the same. We still put people first and, with the support of our Firefox fans, we drive the Web towards openness and interoperability.”

Nvidia has reported record revenue of $1.20bn in Q3, up 15.3 per cent from the previous quarter.
"Kepler GPUs are winning across the special-purpose PC markets we serve, from gaming to design to supercomputing. And Tegra is powering some of the most innovative tablets, phones and cars in the market," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of Nvidia.
Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chips are included in a number of new tablets on the market, including Google’s Nexus 7 and the Windows RT version of Microsoft’s Surface.
The company also announced that it is initiating the payment of a quarterly cash dividend as well as extending its existing $2.7bn share-repurchase program throughout December 2014.
"We are pleased to start paying our shareholders a quarterly cash dividend,” continued Huang. “We have confidence in our businesses and our continued ability to grow. Given our strong financial position and ongoing ability to generate cash, we are well positioned to continue investing in our future."

Football Manager 2013 had more staff than ever working on it… because last year’s version was piracy free for two weeks.
Football Manager 2012 sold better during its opening week because new security measures meant it took hackers a little longer to crack the game.
Developer Sports Interactive and publisher Sega then invested the extra revenue into the studio by hiring ‘17 or 18’ staff, which meant this year’s game boasts over 900 new features.
“Last year the measures we took meant the game wasn’t pirated for two week,” studio director Miles Jacobson told MCV.
“And the extra sales we got in that two weeks is why we have managed to hire more staff this year. The new game has a new system being used, and as of the time of talking the Beta hadn’t been cracked. If we can hold a few more weeks, it would be a benefit to retail and ourselves. And ultimately for the consumer, because once again if we do much better this year, we will invest that back into the studio, take on more people and do more features.”
Football Manager 2013 debuted at No.4 in the charts this week, and Jacobson hopes the game’s new classic mode will encourage gamers with less time on their hands to give the title a go.
“We are expecting this to be the biggest selling Football Manager we ever had,” he added.

EA has announced that BioWare’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will become free-to-play in all territories on November 15th.
The F2P system will allow players to experience all of the class storylines through to the current level cap – level 50.
Existing subscribers will be boosted with free Cartel Coins to reward them for their loyalty. Former subscribers who reactivate their accounts will also get some free coinage.
EA decided to abandon its subscription model for SWTOR after the game had spent eight months on the market. Subscriber numbers had been falling, so the publisher introduced a free-to-play aspect to the game in a bid to entice new users.
“I don’t know about whether it was inevitable but it seems that the market is definitely moving in that direction,” VP of BioWare Austin Matt Bromberg told MCV earlier this year.
“There may be subscription products in the future, maybe more niche products but for a big, broad game like Star Wars, it’s the right way to go.
“We are really hopeful that it’ll bring a new wave of interest and that was really our goal. Star Wars is a very big, broad picture and people love it and there are millions of followers and not all of them were familiar with MMOs as a category. A lot of them were turned off by the barrier that was subscriptions. We hope that lowering that barrier will encourage more casual players to try.”
Bromberg acknowledged that there has been an “explosion of free-to-play MMOs on the iPad”. And that this is something that has caught BioWare’s attention.
“The world seems to be moving towards tablets and devices so the thing we’ll have to figure out as game makers is how do you recreate the engagement that you can on a PC, on a tablet or a mobile?” he asked.
“There’s no question that the consumers are moving there and we have to follow them. A lot of people are working on it, including us.”
