Despite the fact that I've been using Windows 8 for the past three weeks, I somehow managed to overlook a rather stark feature in the OS: ads. No, we're not talking about ads cluttering up the desktop or login screen (thankfully), but rather ads that can be found inside of some Modern UI apps that Windows ships with. That includes Finance, Weather, Travel, News and so forth. On previous mobile platforms, such as iOS and Android, seeing ads inside of free apps hasn't been uncommon. It's a way for the developer to get paid while allowing the user to have the app for free. However, while people can expect ads in a free app, no one expects ads in a piece of software that they just paid good money for.

Cray has unveiled a XC30 supercomputer capable of high-performance computing workloads of more than 100 petaflops. Originally code-named 'Cascade,' the system relies on Intel Xeon processors and Aries interconnect chipset technology, paired with Cray's integrated software environment. Cray touts the XC30's ability to utilize a wide variety of processor types; future versions of the platform will apparently feature Intel Xeon Phi and Nvidia Tesla GPUs based on the Kepler GPU computing architecture. Cray leveraged its work with DARPA's High Productivity Computing Systems program in order to design and build the XC30. Cray's XC30 isn't the only supercomputer aiming for that 100-petaflop crown. China's Guangzhou Supercomputing Center recently announced the development of a Tianhe-2 supercomputer theoretically capable of 100 petaflops, but that system isn't due to launch until 2015. Cray also faces significant competition in the realm of super-computer makers: it only built 5.4 percent of the systems on the Top500 list, compared to IBM with 42.6 percent and Hewlett-Packard with 27.6 percent.

Microsoft has opened a competition to inspire independent UK developers to make and publish Windows game apps to the Windows 8 App Store.
Having launched its Windows 8 operating system, the platform holder is looking to “support and foster” a vibrant and successful sector by giving developers, and their titles, the best chance of success through profile and discoverability.
The competition began this week and closes on December 14th, 2012.
All Windows 8 game apps submitted as part of the competition will be initially reviewed by a Microsoft panel of judges who will shortlist 10 games that will be submitted to the final judging panel of Microsoft and independent judges, which includes Microsoft Studios, UKIE, The Trailer Farm, Yo Yo Games, Nokia, TIGA, Train2Game, Dolby Sounds and selected media.
The final judging decision will be made by Friday, January 11th, 2013. Games will be judged on originality of the game idea, design and artwork, use of Windows 8 app features and graphical UI, playability of the game and use of audio.

Android has more than 1m device activations, Windows Phone 8 has just launched, BB10 is due for a Q1 2013 arrival and the iPhone 5 and new iPads have sold more than five million and three million units, respectively.
With all of those contributing factors, Strategy Analytics expects the app market to generate $35bn in 2017, soaring from $1bn three years ago.
Meanwhile, targeted ads, consumer zest for tech and in-app payments are set to drive the revenues.
Paid downloads accounted for 70 per cent of revs in 2009, but will fall to 36 per cent in 2017 to be replaced by advertising as the dominant money maker.
Josh Martin, director of apps research at Strategy Analytics, said: "The battle for developers is on and supporting recurring revenue streams is essential to gaining developer support.
"It is for this reason that Microsoft and Research in Motion are ensuring their new platforms support in-app purchase and subscription in addition to paid downloads and advertising at launch.
"They continue to battle for third place as the forecast shows Apple's and Google's app stores dominating revenue generation for developers throughout the forecast period."

World of Warcraft’s user figures have risen beyond the 10m mark once more, having dipped to 9.1m in the company’s last financial quarter.
Activision Blizzard has credited the release of Mists of Pandaria for the boost in subscribers.
They’re still say way short of the 12m the game was enjoying in its heyday, but the news certainly bucks the script of those who think free-to-play will spell the end of subscriptions.
Other subscription MMOs are not faring so well, however. EA and BioWare in August decided to switch Star Wars: the Old Republicto a free-to-play model with subscriber numbers falling below 1m.

In a bid to close the digital divide, Microsoft is offering discounted Windows 8 laptops and tablets to schoolchildren and teachers in the UK.
In partnership with Intel and school IT provider RM Education, Microsoft will offers 30 per cent off on a variety of devices from manufacturers including Asus and Acer.
"Government-funded UK schools will be eligible for the scheme which provides a range of high-quality, affordable, Windows 8 devices with top-flight software pre-installed to students and teachers for their own personal use," said RM Education in a statement.
This offer is part of Microsoft’s ‘Shape the Future’ subsidised PC programme, which intends to make it easier for UK schools to provide individual devices to students to aid their learning. The company aims to “close the opportunity gap between rich and poor by putting technology in the hands of every child.”
Joice Fernandes, worldwide leader of the Shape The Future programme at Microsoft commented: “Shape the Future has the power to put knowledge in the hands of children. That knowledge empowers them to shape their own future."

The distributor has launched a new website designed to help resellers and retailers get up to speed on Microsoft’s new OS.
Computer 2000’s dedicated Windows 8 website features demonstrations and sales videos showing the features and benefits of the new system. Resellers can also enter a competition to win a brand new Windows 8 tablet by playing the exclusive Tiles game.
James Reed, director PC systems and software at Computer 2000, said: “The response to the Windows 8 launches has been really positive. As you’d expect, the wave of new tablets and convertibles are getting a good deal of attention, but we are also seeing a lot of interest in the new all-in-one PCs that some vendors have released – from the education and public sector, but also for deployment in call centres finance, retail and other vertical sectors where quick, slick, point-and-go operation is exactly what’s needed.
“We’ve only just had the launch so these are early days and resellers and retailers will need to get up to speed on the features and benefits before they can start to drive new business activity. But we are expecting to see plenty of activity on both the consumer and commercial products as new tablets and AiOs come into stock over the coming weeks.”

During today's Activision earnings call, CEO Bobby Kotick revealed that Blizzard's Diablo 3 has managed to sell over 10 million copies so far. "Year-to-date, Diablo 3 is the top-selling game overall based on enough meta, digital and retail sales in North America and Europe. Diablo 3 has sold already in excess of 10 million copies," Kotick said.
Diablo 3 launched back in May, with 3.5 million snatching the game up within the first 24 hours. In North America, NPD stated that Diablo 3 sold one million retail copies across May. The current version of the game, 1.0.5, has been available since October 25.

Miasmata has one of the more intriguing premises for a horror game I've seen lately. You're stranded on a tropical island where one very specific creature is doggedly hunting you down. You play as a scientist who's fallen victim to a plague on a long-abandoned island called Eden. Your only hope is to search for a cure, as well as your missing colleagues who set up an outpost there. As you explore the island, you'll have to run experiments on gathered plants and fungi to determine their medicinal value.
Incredibly, Miasmata was developed by just two brothers, Joe and Bob Johnson, the former of whom created the game's proprietary "MILO" engine. Operating under the name IonFX, Miasmata has been a labour of love for the brothers Johnson who have spent the last four years working on it and it shows. The game looks stunning for being developed by such a small team and can hold its own against several larger developers from a visual standpoint.Since Miasmata is so heavily based around one creature's AI there's been a lot of attention given to this aspect. "He responds to sounds, smell, and has a vision-cone," Bob Johnson explained to Eurogamer. "You can duck behind trees and rocks and things, and you can also hide in tall grasses and bushes. Objects on the ground have different properties, so if you step on some crunchy sticks or leaves, he may become more aware of you."When asked if you'll have any way to fight back, Bob responded, "The creature is invincible, but you will have to fight him sometimes in order to get an opportunity to flee. You can use rocks, sticks, knives, torches, etc. to attack him. This may scare him away for awhile. You can also throw objects in another direction and that may distract him. You'll throw a torch, for example, and his head will follow it and he may go investigate it. He'll become progressively more dangerous as you go through the game."

Valve has started sending out the first wave of invites for the beta Linux version of Steam.
Currently only working on Ubuntu 12.04, Valve received over 60,000 beta applications for the Linux version of Steam last week. The company has stated that other popular Linux distributions will be supported in the future.
The service currently supports 24 Linux games, including the free-to-play title Team Fortress 2 as well as Serious Sam 3. Valve’s in-house developed titles Portal and Left 4 Dead 2 are expected to become available on Linux soon.
"This is a huge milestone in the development of PC gaming," said Gabe Newell, Valve president and co-founder. "Steam users have been asking us to support gaming on Linux. We're happy to bring rich forms of entertainment and our community of users to this open, customer-friendly platform."
Launched in September, Steam for Linux also supports Big Picture mode. Intended for living room TVs, the interface is designed for use with handheld controllers.

ZF Electronics UK has produced a one-off Cherry G80-3000 keyboard for an upcoming auction in aid of the BBC’s Children in Need.
The computer keyboard has special limited edition laser-prints, done by Delvin Electronics, of Pudsey playing football, flying a biplane and generally having fun.
This is not the first time the company has produced one-off and limited edition keyboards for special events - there has even been a Klingon keyboard.
The Pudsey keyboard is a special version of the popular Cherry G80-3000 series, a fully mechanical, high-quality keyboard tested to over 50 million operations per key. This is the third version of the Pudsey keyboard to be produced, following great successes in both 2009 and 2010.
ZF Electronics UK’s managing director, Michael Groom commented: ”It’s always a genuine pleasure to support this very special BBC event in aid of children and young people who are disadvantaged. We sincerely hope that the auction goes on to raise a substantial amount of money for the charity - of course, high value, genuine offers for this unique product as a 'buy it now' will always be welcome to ensure we achieve the most.”

Opera has just released version 12.10 of its browser for Windows, Linux and Mac with some significant touch-ups, considering it's a point release. Building on the recent 12.0 launch, the desktop browser now has OS X notifications, Retina support, pinch zoom and inertia scrolling for touch-friendly Windows 8, better color rendering, SPDY support for faster page loading and built-in page sharing to Twitter or Facebook. Along with a bump in speed, some of those new treats might tempt desktop users to make a switch, though it's got an uphill climb. You can grab it at the source.

Samsung's experiment with a Ghost Recon SSD bundle must have been a hit with gamers, since it's coming back for a second round the very same year. The upgrade-minded buying 128GB, 256GB or 512GB versions of the SSD 840 Pro can get a free downloadable copy of Assassin's Creed III for a "limited time" to take advantage of those 540MB/s peak read speeds while they skew the fate of the American Revolutionary War. The bundle comes not-so-coincidentally as Samsung has shipped and priced the wider SSD 840 line itself: while we knew the Pro line's impact on our wallets, the regular models are now ready to sell at prices between $140 for a 120GB drive to $700 for a 500GB model. That's a $50 to $190 savings over the Pro models, but we'll leave it to you to decide whether faster write speeds, slightly more capacity and Connor's secret fight with the Templars are worth the premium.

Classic computers are just up [Jeff]‘s alley, so when he looked for a new project for his Pocket Mini Computer, he looked at one of the earliest microcomputers available: the COSMAC VIP, a 1.76 MHz beast from 1977.
The COSMAC VIP was a single-board educational computer released by RCA in 1977. Priced at just a hair under $300, the COSMAC was much more affordable than infamous $1300 ‘fruit’ computer also released that year. To get young programmers up and running quickly, the COSMAC came bundled with the CHIP-8 programming language, making it very easy to generate graphics on-screen for all the eventual PONG and Breakout clones.
[Jeff]‘s COSMAC VIP runs on a Pocket Mini Computer, a very cool Parallax Propeller-powered board we’ve seen before emulate other retro computers including the venerable Commodore SID synthesizer chip.
Because the COSMAC’s user interface was the very, very old-school 4×4 hexadecimal keypad, [Jeff] found it necessary to emulate this retro feature by soldering his own 4×4 keypad. After soldering 16 buttons into 8 columns and rows, [Jeff] connected this keyboard to a PFC8574a I2C I/O expander and connected this chip to the I2C bus on the Pocket Mini Computer.
The result is an emulated COSMAC VIP that’s just begging for an ‘introduction to microprocessors’ class or just a round of Tetris, Tic-tac-toe, Lunar Lander, or one of the several Breakout clones available for this very cool computer. A pretty awesome build, even if it is from the dawn of the computer age.
