Valve has initially blocked a Slender-style game from Steam Greenlight due to copyright concerns.
Faceless, a title initially known as Slender: Source, was submitted to Valve's crowd-driven service by developer Justin Ross. It has been one of the most voted games since Greenlight was launched.
The game is inspired by Slender, a popular free online game thatscared the bejeezus out of us earlier this year. Slender, in turn, was inspired by the Slender Man internet meme, created by Eric Knudsen under the internet handle Victor Surge.
Faceless developer Ross received Knudsen's blessing to create a Slender Man game, but the title is currently been denied release on Steam because Valve feels it needs Knudsen's permission too, according to Joystiq.
"The permission from Victor Surge/Eric Knudsen is fine but since he has an option holder we'll need their permission too," the company wrote to Ross.
The developer has protested due to the fact that a similar Slender Man game, The Intruder, has already been released via Greenlight with no issues. It is possible The Intruder was cleared because its Greenlight description does not refer specifically to the Slender Man, as Faceless' does, nor did it initially have Slender in the title.
Ross is hopeful the issue will be resolved. Faceless is due to go into closed beta in December, before going public in March.

Players of World of Tanks in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines will soon be finding that their gaming experience has become somewhat smoother.
Wargaming has announced the establishment of a direct presence in the region, in which it released World of Tanks back in May. As well as a dedicated customer support services, this also means the establishment of a Singapore-based server group.
"We'd like to thank our partners, SEA Gaming, for their assistance in establishing our presence in Southeast Asia," Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi. "We stand firmly on our feet now and are focused on maintaining sustainable long-term growth in the market."

The Kinect is well supported by a good and evolving SDK on the desktop, but until now using it in a browser wasn't easy. Now Microsoft Research has a free JavaScript API, Kinected Browser, that lets you integrate the Kinect with HTML. The bad news is that it only works on Windows 7 and 8 and in desktop mode only. In addition the browser has to be IE9 or IE 10. The good news is that more programmers know how to do HTML5 graphics than know how to work with DirectX or .NET. As a result this could lead to another burst of innovative Kinect applications.

"In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted each year for posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene, and the number is growing as our online lives expand. 'Fifty years ago someone would have made a really offensive comment in a public space and it would have been heard by relatively few people,' said Mike Harris of free-speech group Index on Censorship. People take it upon themselves to report this offensive material to police, and suddenly you've got the criminalization of offensive speech. Figures obtained by The Associated Press through a freedom of information request show a steadily rising tally of prosecutions in Britain for electronic communications — phone calls, emails and social media posts — that are grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character — from 1,263 in 2009 to 1,843 in 2011. Justice Igor Judge said in his judgment that the law should not prevent 'satirical or iconoclastic or rude comment, the expression of unpopular or unfashionable opinion about serious or trivial matters, banter or humor, even if distasteful to some or painful to those subjected to it.'

EA has denied that it’s online gaming platform, Origin, has been hacked.
According to IGN, a number of rumours surfaced recently after some Origin users reported that they had had their account details stolen. These rumours were wuickly circulated among the tech press and blogosphere.
However, EA has issued a statement denying that their systems have been compromised, with a spokesperson telling press that: “At this point, we have no reason to believe there has been any intrusion into our Origin database.”
Regarding security measures, the software publisher is reported to have said: “For any customer who cannot access their Origin account for any reason, we ask them to please contact Origin Help or EA’s customer experience group at help.ea.com.
“The robust security measures in place to protect Origin users accounts are constantly being expanded and upgraded, and we also strongly recommend customers take the protective steps of using strong passwords and changing passwords often.”

A number of EA Origin users have reportedly had their accounts compromised.
One Eurogamer writer claims to have received an email from EA saying that his account's password or email address or both have successfully been changed – a request that was never made.
There are also reports that consumers who have contacted EA to try and resolve the issue have had little joy in recovering their accounts.
One person even claims to have tracked down the user now linked with his account who is registered with a Russian email address.
It’s far too early to tell if the problems are widespread so don’t be too alarmed for the time being – although it might be an idea to change your Origin password just in case.

New character animations, DirectX 11 support and more in latest game engine release
Unity Technologies has launched the fourth version of its widely used multi-platform engine.
Unity 4.0 is now available for download. Announced in June, the new engine consists of a series of updates designed to improve the product through an extensive improvement of existing tech and the rollout of new features.
The first in a series of planned updates for Unity 4 includes significant additions, such as DirectX 11 support and Mecanim animation tools. Users will also have access to a Linux deployment preview and the Adobe Flash Player deployment add-on.
“Unity 4 will see the addition of an incredible number of new, highly advanced features and continuous improvement across the tech to be released in smaller, faster increments than Unity has seen in the past,” said Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason.
“It’s an exciting time for Unity and the 4.0 release marks the beginning of a great new era for our technology.”

Cevat Yerli, the CEO and president of Crytek, has offered the vocal TimeSplitters fanbase a glimmer of hope.
Ever since the release of TimeSplitters: Future Perfect way back in 2005, fans have been calling for the IP to be resurrected. And with Crytek having acquired TimeSplitters dev Free Radical in 2009, all eyes are on the German developer.
“There is actually a petition running online trying to bring the [TimeSplitters] fan base together,” Yerli told Game Informer. “But unfortunately the petition doesn’t look that convincing. If the petition picks up it will be an even better argument for us.
“At a personal level, I’m a big fan of Timesplitters 2. For me, I would love to see the game out there, as a newborn HD version or what not. I definitely would love to see it. But the case of turning this into a business decision is still difficult, despite the fact that there was a Twitter request feed to test the waters.
“There’s a very hardcore market that is very verbal about it. I would love to see this, and if the fan base approves a further petition. They’re trying to call 300,000 voices, I think it’s at two or three thousand right now. If they could get the petition together I would be very happy to put in front of decision makers in the company, the key stakeholders, and say ‘Look here. This is how it is, let’s make it now’.”
The petition can be found here. At the time of writing it has 33,000 signatures.

On the opening day of a patent trial between Microsoft and Google-owned Motorola Mobility, Motorola filed a brief (PDF) arguing that the WiFi tech central to the case is also critical to Microsoft's new Surface tablet. Motorola says royalties totaling 2.25% of all Surface revenues is a good starting point. They wrote, 'Microsoft's new Surface tablet will use only 802.11, instead of cellular or wired connections, to connect to the internet. Without 802.11 capability, the Surface tablet would be unable to compete in the market, because consumers can readily select tablet devices other than the Surface that have 802.11 capability.' Microsoft, of course, says this figure is outrageous, given 'Motorola's promise to standards bodies to offer access to the "standard essential" patents on fair and reasonable terms.

Crytek president Cevat Yerli has said during an interview that a Timesplitters HD collection may be viable if a petition can attract 300,000 signatures.
Speaking to Game Informer, Yerli noted the existence of a Timesplitters HD petition and said the support attracted so far was not convincing. "If the petition picks up it will be an even better argument for us," he said.A fan of Timesplitters 2, Yerli said he'd like to see the series given a HD facelift, but admitted as a business decision it would be "difficult".
"There's a very hardcore market that is very verbal about it. I would love to see this, and if the fan base approves a further petition. They're trying to call 300,000 voices, I think it's at two or three thousand right now. If they could get the petition together I would be very happy to put [it] in front of decision makers in the company, the key stakeholders, and say 'Look here. This is how it is, let's make it now.'"
At the time of writing, the petition has attracted 25,048 signatures. Take part here.

MSI made a reasonable case for AMD-based gaming when it unveiled the GX60 laptop back in September... just not for Americans looking to buy one right away. There's a better argument now that the 15.6-inch portable is shipping to the US this week. The $1,300 asking price isn't quite impulse level, but it's a relative steal for a system whose quad-core, 2.3GHz A10-4600M processor and Radeon HD 7970M should handle modern games without much fuss. The 8GB of RAM, 750GB hard drive, Blu-ray drive, SteelSeries keyboard and Killer networking don't hurt, either. As long as the GX60's 7.7-pound weight isn't too imposing, it might be the ticket to wielding a brag-worthy PC at the next LAN party without having to follow the Intel-owning pack.

We've known for some time that Microsoft was working on bringing Internet Explorer 10 to Windows 7 -- in fact, the company published a blog post promising the preview version would be ready sometime in mid-November. Then, we heard it could be available today. Well, looky here! It is! The Release Preview is indeed now available to download from Microsoft's site. As you'd expect, the Win 7 build has the same look and feel as the Windows 8 version, with full-screen browsing, hardware acceleration, deep multitouch support and a predictive "Flip ahead" feature that guesses what page you want to see next (page two of a story, the next round of search results, et cetera). If you own a Windows 7 PC that doesn't have a touchscreen (and that's probably the case), you should still be able to pull off multitouch gestures in IE using a trackpad, assuming you have the right drivers. If all else fails, though, you can still use the browser with the ol' mouse and keyboard.

It’s one of the biggest triple-A franchises in gaming – so it might surprise you to learn that Crysis is struggling to break even.
“I'm not talking about being greedy and we want more sales. But effectively Crysis 1 and 2 and 3 are just about breaking even. If we meet the forecasts - and I can't reveal the forecasts - then we are going to break even,” Crytek boss Cevat Yerli told Eurogamer.
“This is a very important point. The market is much more brutal for developers than people assume. It's difficult for many reasons. If you want to stay in the triple-A space where you want to tell big stories with big productions, there are a lot of market shifts right now happening to different platforms, from social platforms to mobile and other platforms. People say they do not affect the market, but they do affect the market.
“The console sales are down. The PC sales are down for the retail markets. But they're getting bigger for F2P and online markets. So for a retail game like Crysis 3 it's going to be a tough one to break out and hit the big numbers.”
All of which leads Yerli to the conclusion that the burgeoning free-to-play sector might prove a more fertile breeding ground for the series post Crysis 3.
“There's a transformation period for the industry. I believe free-to-play is our inevitable future,” he added. “I believe there are F2P titles out there that can be story-telling, that can be co-operative with your friends and can be competitive with your friends. It's all possible.
“The business model is independent from the way you design games. It's a very important thing. People always make these things dependent, but it's actually completely independent.
“But the most important aspect is there is a psychological transformation of the customers and the publishers that has to happen before everything is F2P on every platform. We are promoting these steps with other titles we're doing right now in our company. Crysis, we do have a plan for a F2P version of Crysis, but how this looks and when this will be done, whether this is the next one or the other next one, is to be decided.
“But we have a very clear picture of how this will look and how a transitional period where retail and free-to-play can coexist for one title.”

The next installment in the Starcraft II trilogy is set to arrive on March 12th, with Blizzard opening up pre-orders for standard and digital deluxe editions starting today.
Blizzard solidifies the target date after noting last week in its financial report that the company hoped to launch the expansion sometime within the first half of 2013.
Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm will be offered in three packages: Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Collector’s Edition.
The standard edition runs $40 and contains only the game, while the $60 Digital Deluxe version packs in a World of Warcraft pet, a bonus skin, Zerg portraits/decals, Kerrigan’s wings, and a Zerg sigil for Diablo III characters.
The $80 retail Collector’s Edition will include all the aforementioned goodies from the Digital Deluxe package, plus a 144-page hardcover art book, Zerg mouse pad, behind-the-scenes DVD, and soundtrack CD.
The Collector’s Edition pre-order availability date wasn’t shared as part of the announcement, but both the regular and Digital Deluxe offerings are available for pre-order as of right now.

Nvidia is taking the wraps off a new GPU targeted at HPC and as expected, it's a monster. The Nvidia K20, based on the GK110 GPU, weighs in at 7.1B transistors, double the previous gen GK104's 3.54B. The GK110 is capable of pairing double-precision operations with other instructions (Fermi and GK104 couldn't) and the number of registers each thread can access has been quadrupled, from 63 to 255. Threads within a warp are now capable of sharing data. K20 also supports a greater number of atomic operations and brings new features to the table including Dynamic Parallelism. Meanwhile, AMD has announced a new FirePro graphics card at SC12 today, and it's aimed at server workloads and data center deployment. Rumors of a dual-core Radeon 7990 have floated around since before the HD 7000 series debuted, but this is the first time we've seen such a card in the wild. On paper, AMD's new FirePro S10000 is a serious beast. Single and double-precision rates at 5.9 TFLOPS and 1.48 TFLOPS respectively are higher than anything from Intel or Nvidia, as is the card's memory bandwidth. The flip side to these figures, however, is the eye-popping power draw. At 375W, the S10000 needs a pair of eight-pin PSU connectors. The S10000 is aimed at the virtualization market with its dual-GPUs on a single-card offering a good way to improve GPU virtualization density inside a single server."My entire computer uses less power than one of these cards.

Google is following up last month's Samsung Chromebooks with a new, lower-priced one developed by Acer. Retailing for $199, the 11.6-inch Acer C7 Chromebook features an Intel Celeron 847 processor, 2GB of DDR3 memory, a 320GB hard drive, three USB 2.0 ports and an HDMI port for various cords and auxiliary devices. It's designed for portability, weighing 3.05 pounds and measuring an inch thick. Boot time is reportedly less than 18 seconds. If the new Chromebook has a weakness, it's the advertised 3.5 hours of battery life. That's less than the MacBook Air (which features anywhere from 5-7 hours' battery life, depending on specs) and many of the Windows-backed Ultrabooks, some of which claim up to 11 hours of battery life depending on usage. It's also far less than the posted battery life for tablets such as Apple's iPad and Google's Nexus 7, which are widely viewed as the most prominent competition to laptops in the extra-portable category.

Molyneux tweet reveals post release 22cans push on cube tapping iOS game
A tweet by renowned games designer Peter Molynuex has revealed that the staff at his studio had to undertake a 36 hour crunch to resolve an issue with the troubled servers supporting iOS game Curiosity: What's Inside The Cube.
The Tweet read "The coders here at 22cans did another 36 hour marathon. We now have hugely improved servers #curiosity is stating to behave like it should."
Server issues have caused the much anticipated game problems since release.
Glance at the comments below the Tweet in question, and it's clear crunch remains a contentious issue. A number of games developers quickly suggested Molyneux was a little too upbeat about crunch, asserting that he should not encourage or promote the practice.
According to Molyneux's Tweets, the extra effort has dealt with the issues and introduced improvements.

Emails, browsing and social media appear to be more important than hearing about the latest episode of Made In Chelsea.
There's been a number of stats to show the lengths mobile users will go to in order to stay connected to their devices, and tech firm Storage Options has unearthed a few more.
57 per cent of Brits admit to using their mobiles when in bed, 40 per cent do so while sitting on the loo, and one in 20 gadget-obessed users access the device during sex.
In fact, 45 per cent of respondents admit that their phones and tablets prevent them from ever truly relaxing during their spare time.
More worryingly still, 49 per cent of tablet users claim they're more interested in the device than they are striking up conversations with their partner, while 35 per cent find the amount of time their partner spends on the device more annoying than them not doing housework.
Results also show that 20 per cent of people set a limit on the amount time their other halves can spend using devices, while 45 per cent can't go an hour without checking their gadgets.
However, 40 per cent reckon their mobiles have improved their efficiency, while 36 per cent of people in Northern Ireland and 34 per cent in the South East of England claim they would miss out on vital information without using their devices for a day.
