Capcom subsidiary Beeline Interactive will be developing a free-to-play mobile game based on Sony Pictures' Ghostbusters franchise. The game is scheduled for release in early 2013 and places players in the shoes of a brand-new Ghostbuster.
"We're very excited to be bringing this beloved franchise to smartphone players around the world,” said Beeline chief executive officer Midori Yuasa. “Ghostbusters offers a rich, exciting and otherworldly universe that we hope to expand and complement with our smartphone and tablet game.”
“Beeline has a proven track record and has been a leader in developing and publishing top-rated game apps,” said Mark Caplan, vice president of Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “Given our ongoing relationship with them on Smurfs' Village, they are the perfect partner to carry forward the success of Ghostbusters in the interactive space.”
Smurfs' Village has been wildly successful for Capcom and Beeline, so it's no surprise that all parties involved are looking to capitalize on that success.

When we’re trying to get a relatively complex project to work we often end up with twenty windows open. When this happens we’re usually referencing multiple data sheets, webpages, and trying to write code that the same time. We’ve seen people with two or three monitors to alleviate the situation (often called a battlestation), but the we’re cheap and can’t justify buying more displays just for these occasions. Well [Oscar] may have the solution for us. His old laptop had been sitting in a box unused so he flipped the screen and built a stand to position it as an additional display on his desk.
The hack simply removed the screen for the hinged cover so that it could be flipped around. This turns the laptop into a tablet minus the touchscreen ability but that could always be added in later (we’ve seen it done with netbooks). He tells us that the only issue he ran into during this process was the length of the inverter cable. He simply cut it and spliced in a little bit of extra length.
[Oscar] didn’t write a post about his project, but you can see the build gallery after the break.

No-one likes a cheat, of course, but sometimes things should maybe be put in a little more perspective.
At a time when games journalists and PRs are being targeted for even the slightest mishap or riské comment, the president of Sony Online Entertainment John Smedley has embarked on a possibly ill-advised Twitter tiradeagainst Planestside 2 hackers.
As well as bragging about the company’s ability to easily identify perpetrators, the exec also took to threatening individuals.
Comments included [sic]:
“those of you using aimbots are being hunted down and banned. Remember to use /report. People are being banned left and right.”
“we have guys who's purpose in life is to ban the bad guys and dumbasses that use hacking tools.”
“we aren't commenting on the methods. Needless to say we have a lot of ways to accomplish a goal.”
“Haruhi at http://artificialaiming.com was just banned. all 3 of his accounts. Goodbye you scumbag. Find a new hobby or get good at the game.”
“we don't need to cross reference anything. Use it.. we'll find you. we'll find your family. we'll hunt you down.”
MCV has contacted SOE for comment.
UPDATE: After speaking with SOE, it seems to fair to point out - as if it were not already obvious - that Smedley was of course not threatening anyone with real and genuine violence. To put the "hunt" tweet into its full context, it was in two parts that when combined read as follows:
"We don't need to cross reference anything. Use it.. we'll find you. we'll find your family. we'll hunt you down. or maybe I've been watching the trailer for Zero Dark Thirty too much. seriously we're on this."
Smedley also said at the same time that "I have no hacker hate. Actually I just don't like cheaters. No ill will to the guys that try" and has since added "Just to a make sure people know I was joking - we aren't hunting down hacker's families. Someone thought I was being too aggressive".
UPDATE 2: John Smedley has offered MCV the following quote: "We take the integrity of Planetside 2 very seriously. We are putting the full force of our best people behind making sure hackers never get a foothold in the game. They will be hunted down without mercy and we won't let the door hit them on the way out."

Yes, Scrolls is Mojang’s first game since Minecraft, and yes, it bears few of that now-legendary game’s marks, with neither its open-ended scope, nor its raw accessibility. But that doesn’t make Scrolls some sort of passion project. It’s not a breakaway from Mojang’s core desire to make games for large communities of players. And neither is it anything less than interesting, original and smart. It’s constructed from a fashionable set of components: collectible cards and turn-based puzzle-strategy, an amalgam of Magic: The Gathering, Might & Magic: Clash Of Heroes and Stratego.

We've been tracking Crysis 3 for a while, from the trailer a few months ago to the recent alpha multiplayer preview. The game is available for preorder and it will launch in February. Crytek has nowlisted the minimum system requirements for Crysis 3 and they're as follows: Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, DirectX 11 graphics card with 1GB Video RAM, Dual core CPU, 2GB Memory (3GB on Vista). Those aren't particularly stringent parameters by any means, but as we all know, 'minimum requirements' rarely are. Crytek suggests upgrading to a quad-core CPU, 4GB of RAM, with examples of CPU/GPU combinations that include Intel Core i5-750/NVIDIA GTX 560 and AMD Phenom II X4 805/AMD Radeon HD5870.

A presentation at the Passwords^12 Conference in Oslo, Norway (slides), has moved the goalposts on password cracking yet again. Speaking on Monday, researcher Jeremi Gosney (a.k.a epixoip) demonstrated a rig that leveraged the Open Computing Language (OpenCL) framework and a technology known as Virtual Open Cluster (VCL) to run the HashCat password cracking program across a cluster of five, 4U servers equipped with 25 AMD Radeon GPUs communicating at 10 Gbps and 20 Gbps over Infiniband switched fabric. Gosney's system elevates password cracking to the next level, and effectively renders even the strongest passwords protected with weaker encryption algorithms, like Microsoft's LM and NTLM, obsolete. In a test, the researcher's system was able to generate 348 billion NTLM password hash checks per second. That renders even the most secure password vulnerable to compute-intensive brute force and wordlist (or dictionary) attacks. A 14 character Windows XP password hashed using LM for example, would fall in just six minutes, said Per Thorsheim, organizer of the Passwords^12 Conference. For some context: In June, Poul-Henning Kamp, creator of the md5crypt() function used by FreeBSD and other, Linux-based operating systems, was forced to acknowledge that the hashing function is no longer suitable for production use — a victim of GPU-powered systems that could perform 'close to 1 million checks per second on COTS (commercial off the shelf) GPU hardware,' he wrote. Gosney's cluster cranks out more than 77 million brute force attempts per second against MD5crypt

NPD is the latest analyst to give Microsoft a kicking, having released research showing that PC sales have dropped since the launch of Windows 8.
The analysts findings show that, since the launch, sales of Windows 8 devices have fallen by 21 per cent since the same period last year. Notebook sales fell by 24 per cent, while desktop sales fell by nine per cent.
In the four weeks since launch, Windows 8 has taken 58 per cent of the Windows market, compared to Windows 7 which took 83 per cent in the same period.
“After just four weeks on the market, it’s still early to place blame on Windows 8 for the ongoing weakness in the PC market,” said NPD’s vice president of industry analysis, Stephen Baker.
“We still have the whole holiday selling season ahead of us, but clearly Windows 8 did not prove to be the impetus for a sales turnaround some had hoped for.”

22Cans boss Peter Molyneux has said he hopes to release a playable prototype of his Populous follow-up, Godus.
Molyneux hit Kickstarter with the projecton November 21, promising an "innovative reinvention of Populous", and a "reinvention of the god game" genre.Lofty claims from the developer known for over-promising and under delivering. Fully aware of his reputation, Molyneux aims to provide proof of concept to gamers with an early playable prototype.
"I hope by Christmas we have a prototype that people can download and say, 'Actually, you know what, they're already doing good work,'" he told Joystiq.
"And this is what needs to happen with Kickstarter and games. The promises... wouldn't it be amusing if I was the one to prove this right? These promises have to result in great games."
At the time of writing, the Godus Kickstarter fund sits at £194,733 of a targeted £450,000, with 17 days to go, and with gradually slowing donations is at risk of not reaching that goal.
The game is billed for release "in less than a year from now" for PC and mobile devices.

Valve Software's celebrating the official launch of TV-based "Big Picture Mode" today, which enables Steam users to play PC games on their televisions with a user interface designed around the experience. As a result of the celebration, "over thirty" games are seeing prices slashed by as much as 75 percent through December 10th -- those games, as you might expect, are geared toward controller-based gamers. Should you wish to get in on the Big Picture phenomenon now that it's out of beta, all you've gotta do is sign into Steam with a PC or Mac connected to your television and click the "Enable Big Picture Mode" icon in the upper right hand corner. Not sure if it's for you? Take a gander at our hands-on from back in September to get an idea of how the service stacks up.

Developer DreamQuest Games is undoubtedly down in the dumps this morning after its Kickstarter project narrowly missed its funding target.
Trading sim title Alpha Colony had a $50,000 and finished at $49,972 – just $28 dollars short!
And much like in the Dragon’s Den, projects that don’t reach their full funding goals receive nothing.
"Kickstarter is very strict about their terms and our project will not be funded," a statement on the game's Facebook page read. "Obviously, we are very disappointed.
“We have invested ten months and over $60,000 of our own money into this project. It is so frustrating to come so close, but clearly there simply isn't that much interest in building the kind of game I envisioned.
"I have already invested everything I have getting my dream this far (twice!) and now I must feed my family and focus on projects that will pay the bills. I have been trying to build this game for almost 14 years so I doubt this is the end for Alpha Colony, but I do have to be responsible business owner and father and accept the reality of where we are at the moment and what the world wants."

After an initial trial in Tottenham Court Road's flagship store, Currys and PC World have rolled out 'Google zones' into 50 locations across the UK.
These Google zones have dedicated staff, all trained in using the range of Google Chromebooks to demonstrate their benefits and features to customers.
Mark Slater, category director for computing at Dixons Retail, comments, “Customers love the versatility and ease of use of the Chromebook range, and a dedicated area in-store, with specialist staff on hand, is a great way for customers to experience the product and learn the benefits of a unique operating system. One area where Moore's law can be seen alive and well seems to be the developer and small project computer world. Whether it's the ubiquitous Raspberry Pi, Intel's NUC, or any number ofsimilar products. There's one more name to add to this list, and that's the ODROID-U from Hardkernel. The boards are a little more expensive than Raspberry Pi's impressively cheap Model A and Model B, but you are getting some bang for that buck. The $69 ODROID-U comes with a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 processor (as found in the Galaxy S III and Note II, 1GB of RAM, quad-core Mali 400 graphics, micro-HDMI, a brace of USB ports, a headphone jack and Ethernet. If you want a little more oomph, for an extra $20 you can have the RAM doubled, and a 1.7GHz core with the ODROID-U2 model. There's one stat you might notice missing which is flash memory. There's no onboard storage, so you'll have to bring your own memory for the built-in microSD slot. As the ODROID name suggests, the boards can run Android, as well as a variety of Linux flavours. Sound good? In a reverse of what you might expect, the ODROID-U2 will be available first, starting December 21st, with the cheaper board pencilled in to arrive on January 16th.

Don't believe everything Steve Jobs and Tim Cook tell you, advises The Verge's Sean Hollister. Gunshy of touchscreen laptops after hearing the two Apple CEOs dismiss the technology (Jobs: 'Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical.' Cook: 'You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not gonna be pleasing to the user.'), Hollister was surprised to discover that Windows 8 touchscreen laptops actually don't suck and that the dreaded 'Gorilla Arm Syndrome' did not materialize. 'The more I've used Windows 8, despite its faults, the more I've become convinced that touchscreens are the future — even vertical ones,' writes Hollister. 'We've been looking at this all wrong. A touchscreen isn't a replacement for a keyboard or mouse, it's a complement.' Echoing a prediction from Coding Horror's Jeff Atwood that 'it is only a matter of time before all laptops must be touch laptops,' Hollister wouldn't be surprised at all if Apple eventually embraces-and-extends the tech: 'Microsoft might have validated the idea, but now Apple has another chance to swoop in, perfecting and popularizing the very interface that it strategically ridiculed just two years ago. It wouldn't be the first time. After all, how many iPad minis come with sandpaper for filing fingers down?
