Bruno Ferreira at Tech Report has a number of suggestions that he feels could improve PC gaming. Some are quite thought-provoking. For example: 'When technology advanced [in the '90s], the industry came up with a certification specification to ensure punters didn't miss out—and consequently spent more on better PCs. That spec was called MPC, short for Multimedia Personal Computer. The first version of the MPC spec said, in simple terms: Thy computer shalt be blessed with a sound card and speakers. Thou shalt be provided a CD-ROM drive in which to receive silver discs. Thy processor shalt not be completely crap. At the time, this spec meant a lot—and, to be honest, I think it worked marvelously. We need something like that again. People wanted MPC, everyone sold the better hardware, and everyone was happy. Let the powers that be come up with a new baseline specification. Call it MPC-HD or whatever acronym the marketing Nazgûl want to give it. I'm fine with whatever, as long as it gets the job done.' He also calls for an end to the unintuitive model numbers for GPUs and CPUs, and more consistent driver support.

Criminals are using a new Internet Explorer security hole to attack Windows computers in targeted attacks, though the vulnerability could end up being more widely exploited. While IE9 and IE10 are not affected, versions IE6, IE7, and IE8 are. It's great to see that the latest versions of IE are immune, but this new vulnerability is still bad news for Windows XP users and earlier since they cannot upgrade to more recent versions of Microsoft's browser. "We are actively investigating reports of a small, targeted issue affecting Internet Explorer 6-8," Dustin Childs of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing told TNW. "We will take appropriate action to help keep customers protected once our analysis is complete. People using Internet Explorer 9-10 are not impacted.

The majority of mainstream shopping holidays have now reached a complete stop, but the sales live on – especially in the case of Valve's annual Steam Holiday Sale, which today enters its ninth day of dealing out discounted digital sundries.
PC gamers can save 25 to 75 percent on every game in the Assassin's Creed series, 75/50 percent off Prototype and Prototype 2 respectively, get Left 4 Deadand Left 4 Dead 2 for a cold dead $7.49, Limbo for a spooky $2.49, Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion for an astronomically low $13.59 and Just Cause 2 for a justified $3.74.
Yesterday's deals also remain active for another 20 hours or so, including LA Noire for $4.99, FTL for $4.99 and 33 percent off XCOM: Enemy Unknown. As always, flash sales and community choice sales change throughout the day.

Assuming you were a non-naughty-lister who didn't get the proverbial coal lump, it looks like that gift under the tree was more likely a tablet than a phone this Noël, according toFlurry. The analytics outfit said that just over half of December 25th activations were slates, and we can't imagine too many gift-getters letting their new devices simlessly fester in a box over the big day. Overall activations more than doubled from last Christmas, and were up 332 percent on that single day from the first 20 days of December, combined. As might be expected, Apple came up big with iPad sales, butFlurry said that Amazon was also a winner with its 7-inch Kindle Fire HD tab, showing a "several thousand percent" increase over baseline activations. None of this likely comes as a huge shock to our readers, who rather overwhelmingly said that they'd rather have a Nexus 7 tablet than a pricier RAZR Mas a gift if they toiled at Google.

Blizzard will support dueling, but Team Deathmatch heads back to the drawing board
Blizzard has decided to scrap its planned implementation of Team Deathmatch for Diablo III. Diablo III lead game director Jay Wilson explained why the company nixed the mode in a post on the official Diablo III site.
“In continuing to develop this mode, playtest it, and put it in front of other developers within the company, we've found that it falls short of our expectations for a high-quality Blizzard experience,” stated Wilson.
Wilson cited game depth and class balance as two problems which reared their ugly heads in Diablo III Team Deathmatch.
“Simply fighting each other with no other objectives or choices to make gets old relatively quickly. We've brought a lot of people in to try out Team Deathmatch and, while some found it entertaining, most of our testers didn't feel like it was something they'd want to do beyond a few hours. Without more varied objectives, or very lucrative rewards, few saw our current iteration as something they'd want spend a lot of time in,” wrote Wilson.
“Diablo III was designed to be a PvE-first kind of game, where we never compromised on player abilities in the name of future PvP balance. We want to be able to carry over as many of the crazy runes, items, and skills as possible, with their crazy effects, and alter them as little as possible. In a casual PvP mode, something equivalent to a WoW Battleground, this would be fine, but Team Deathmatch felt very hardcore, and it put a laser focus on class balance in a way that we didn't think would be good for the game as a whole.”
“Certainly, we've gotten a lot of benefits from the development of Team Deathmatch, especially in the areas of controls and combat model tuning, but at this point we don't believe it's the experience we feel it needs to be in order to ship, so we will be shelving it for now and exploring other options,” he added. “We are going back to the drawing board on a new replacement for Team Deathmatch, something that feels more appropriate for Diablo III. And as we stated previously, regardless of when we release it, it'll be a free addition to the game.”
Wilson said dueling will still be coming to Diablo III with patch 1.0.7, scheduled to be released “sometime after the new year”.

Family Guy Online is closing down for good on January 18 – and really, it probably is for good. Family Guy Online, an interactive, quasi-MMO, microtransactional world, never made it out of open beta, meaning it's getting the shut-down before ever getting the go-ahead.
Any real-money purchases players made between October 22 and December 21 will be refunded, with processing completed in early January. Check out the complete process on the Family Guy Onlinesite.

Peter Molyneux's Godus Kickstarter fund closed today at £526,563.
The funding goal of £450,000 was reached on Wednesday, December 19, when developer 22Cans announced a series of stretch goals - addition features promised for funds attained beyond the original target. The £526k pledged hit five of the six stretch goals stipulated, falling just short of the Ouya support promised at the £550k mark.
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting Godus," said Molyneux. "Our job is now to work on and complete Godus, the game we've fallen in love with, and to make it the game you want to play."
With Godus, Molyneux has promised an "innovative reinvention of Populous".
The Kickstarter page says, "Godus blends the power, growth and scope of Populous with the detailed construction and multiplayer excitement of Dungeon Keeper and the intuitive interface and technical innovation of Black & White. The original Populous hailed from the 8-bit era but Godus will use the most modern technology the world has to offer."

After two years of work, Debian m68k has working build servers, and is slowly working through the backlogof stale packages."Contrary to some rumours which I've had to debunk over the years, the m68k port did not go into limbo because it was kicked out of the archive; instead, it did because recent versions of glibc require support for thread-local storage, a feature that wasn't available on m68k, and nobody with the required time, willingness, and skill set could be found to implement it. This changed a few years back, when some people wrote the required support, because they were paid to do so in order to make recent Linux run on ColdFire processors again. Since ColdFire and m68k processors are sufficiently similar, that meant the technical problem was solved. However, by that time we'd fallen so far behind that essentially, we needed to rebootstrap the port all over again. Doing that is nontrivial, and most of the m68k porters team just didn't have the time or willingness anymore to work on this; and for a while, it seemed like the m68k port was well and truly dead."The tales of acquiring the needed hardware are pretty interesting (one machine is an Amiga in a custom tower case).

The murmurs surrounding a 10-inch Nokia tablet are growing louder, and they suggest that the company won't just follow the herd. Tipsters for The Verge claim that the Windows RT slate would center on a Surface-style keyboard cover with its own twists. While the add-on would shelter the screen, it would also include a battery to supplement the 10-hour lifespan of the tablet proper. Not enough? It could carry a pair of USB ports and serve as a kickstand. There may be a chance of a US release, as well: Nokia's tablet would supposedly include cellular access and head to AT&T in the US, much like itsBooklet 3G ancestor. We're not surprised that the Finnish firm won't comment on the rumor, but we might not have long to wait for verification if the early 2013 release proves real.

From this week gamers will be able to purchase digital download codes in-store. Furthermore, they will also be able to pre-order digital PC games, with a download code being sent to them on the day of release.

The new offering goes life with a discount on Sega’s Total War Master Collection, which has been slashed 50 per cent to £37.40. The SKU includes
Rome: Total War, Medieval II: Total War, Empire Total War, Napoleon: Total War, Total War: Shogun 2, Total War: Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai, Total War Battles: Shogun and Viking: Battle for Asgard.

Strike Suit Zero’s aesthetic is eastern. This PC space dogfighter is neon blue and cherry-blossom pink, and casts the player as the pilot of a spaceship-cum-mecha – the eponymous Strike Suit. Its story – a tale of Earth’s struggle against the colonists it fired out to inhabit our galaxy’s other worlds – is told via anime-esque talking heads and subtitled text. But Strike Suit Zero isn’t Japanese. It’s from Guildford, and it’s being made by a team who class resolutely western games as their core influences. Born Ready Games was raised on space-based classics like TIE Fighter, Freelancer, and Starlancer.

"So while games have come under spotlight via the debate about the causes of the tragic school shootings in the U.S., it is worth remembering that games are now a broad medium and far from all games are FPS games. Even those about war are not now just about shooting, as Endgame:Syriashows by covering an ongoing war; 'The subject matter for Endgame: Syria should not however be looked on from a trivialized angle; people and civilian casualties are dying every day over in Syria.

A Metro version of VLC, the popular free and open-source media player, is coming to Windows 8. On Sunday, the VideoLAN organization reached its funding goal on Kickstarter for its Windows 8-specific app. There are also plans to port it afterwards to Windows Phone 8. The project has now been funded by over 2,500 backers, who have pledged more than the £40,000 ($65,000) goal.
