Mozilla has been recognised as the most trusted company on the internet for privacy.
The award has come about after a survey of 100,000 Americans, conducted by the Ponemon Institute, found that the Mozilla was highest ranked in the Internet and Social Media category, and made in to the top 20 for all companies.
“This is certainly quite a distinction and the product of a user-centric philosophy implemented by contributors to the Mozilla project over the past decade,” wrote the vice president of business affairs and general counsel at Mozilla, Harvey Anderson, on theMozilla Blog.
“The rankings have another implication. It means we as an industry all have a lot more work to do. It’s unfortunate that users largely distrust the ecosystem of online service and application providers. What we really want is an environment where those of us developing Internet and social media services and applications deepen trust in a way that empowers and protects users and engenders confidence.”

Google's Chrome security team has taken the wraps off its latest Pwnium competition. This time out, the target is Chrome OS on a Samsung Series 5 550, and as ever, the company's putting its money (and nerd cred) where its mouth is, offering up a $Pi million in rewards (that's a lofty $3.14159 million) for the third round of the competition. Amongst the payouts are $110,000 for a "browser or system level compromise in guest mode or as a logged-in user, delivered via a web page" and $150,000 for a "compromise with device persistence -- guest to guest with interim reboot, delivered via a web page." The company is also putting some weight behind the upcoming Pwn2Own competition, which goes down at CanSecWest in Vancouver in March. More info on both can be found at the source link below.

ABI Research recently predicted 145m tablets will ship this year, and now reports that tablet-based shopping is becoming quite the trend in States. 22 per cent of users now spend $50 or more via their device a month, while nine per cent spend $100 or more, which is noted as significantly higher than smartphone spending.
Mobile shopping of physical and digital items hasn't affected retail stores yet, though companies are concerned their shops will be turned into showrooms for e-commerce buys. They're every right to be concerned too, as data recently showed that a fifth of Americans use mobiles when in-store to make price comparisons.
Indeed, over 50 per cent of tablet shoppers all admit to have performed price checks, redeemed a coupon, and completed location-based searches while shopping within the past 90 days.
Jeff Orr, senior practice director of mobile devices, ABI Research, said: "Tablets are quickly becoming the go-to transaction screen within the home. The opportunity to keep consumers buying in-store squarely remains with the retailer. So far, the presence of a media tablet during the shopping experience has not altered the sales channel where consumers finally buy products."
While tablets and shopping appear to go together like fish and chips, 17 per cent of owners also use their tablets when reading newspapers and magazines, and 14 per cent use them in conjunction with the TV.

Microsoft has confirmed that the newly announced Microsoft Surface Pro will offer users just 83GB of useable storage space.
The firm confirmed to Softpedia that the Pro edition of the Surface, which features the company's Windows 8 Pro operating system, to reserve 45GB of the device's storage for system files.
Microsoft's original Surface tablet drew fire from users for a similar issue, as the system's OS ate up 13GB of HDD space.
The news will likely upset owners of the base 64GB model of the Surface who were contemplating using Windows 8 Pro as their device's operating system – they would be left with just 19GB of useable space.
Apple may benefit from the Surface's storage issues, as the firm today announced the upcoming release of a 128GB iPad.
Users looking to fill their device with their favourite media may be swayed away from the Surface and go for the upgraded iPad instead, given its limited demand for system storage.

Call me a PC gamer with an axe to grind, but it appears the current console generation is once again limiting the potential of titles on the PC.
Visceral Games, the developer behind upcoming survival horror title Dead Space 3, has announced that the PC version will offer little graphical improvement over its console platforms.
The developer felt is was important to maintain a consistent gaming experience across all platforms, rather than harness the additional power available on today's high-end gaming PCs.
“[The PC version is] by no means any less important to us; it gets a lot of attention,” Steve Papoutsis told ShackNews. “The PC is a very different platform. As developers, you want to deliver an experience that's as similar as possible on different platforms.
“We continue to evolve our games as we develop them, but we certainly don't target PC as something that's going to be significantly different. We aren't trying to create disparity in the experience that our gamers enjoy; we want to make sure everyone's having that same experience.
"At our studio, we've always made console games. The biggest thing is we want to make sure the quality of the experience is consistent across all platforms so we don't have one userbase saying it's better on their system."
Of course, there are benefits to offering a similar experience across all of the title's platforms.
It limits the likelihood of a backlash of disgruntled console gamers, unnerved by the superiority of the PC version of the game as they are left with a technically inferior product.
Console gamers form a larger portion of the market, so it largely makes sense to keep them happy.
But still, it leaves PC gamers frustrated as developer's fail to push the platform to it's limits with its games as ailing console struggle to keep up.

Valve has revealed the top ten selling titles for the past week on Steam.
While pre-orders for Skyrim’s Dragonborn DLC made a strong charge up the list, it was chart regular Chivalry: Medieval Warfare that grabbed the top spot. The indie medieval affair was boosted by a 50 per cent off sale held over this past weekend.
The Dragonborn DLC pre-orders seemed to boost base game sales as well, with Skyrim finishing right behind in third.
Last week’s number one Euro Truck Simulator 2 slipped to fifth, finishing behind ArmA II.
- Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
- Skyrim - Dragonborn
- Skyrim
- ArmA II: Combined Operations
- Euro Truck Simulator 2
- The Cave
- Far Cry 3
- DmC Devil May Cry
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Now with a Steam page that doesn't expressly list Mac as a supported platform, we understand your skepticism regarding the headline to this very post. Indeed Half-Life has been ported to both OS X and Linux today.
We tried it on OS X and it totally worked, though we've yet to try it on Linux. Odds are if you have a Steam account, you probably already own Half-Life – but if for some reason you need to purchase this iconic shooter, it'll set you back $9.99 on Steam right now.

Sure, you could enjoy Android on your PC through dual-booting or virtualization, but the folks at Socketeq have whipped up yet another alternative: a port of Mountain View's mobile OS, fittingly dubbed WindowsAndroid, that runs natively on the Windows kernel (under Vista, 7 and 8) instead of Linux. Not only does the operating system run speedily since its free of virtualization chains, but it serves up the appropriate tablet or smartphone UI based on window size, and plays nice with keyboards and mice, to boot. Socketeq's solution serves up the full Android experience, but you'll have to separately flash the Google apps that typically come baked in, according toAndroid Police. Ice Cream Sandwich is the freshest flavor of Android to have undergone the kernel-replacement treatment, and it's currently being offered as a free "first-try" download at the source.

With the Raspberry Pi and sever other ARM dev boards seeing their time in the lime light, it’s no surprise other chip manufacturers would want to get in on the action. AMD is releasing a very tiny x86 dev board called the Gizmo, a four-inch square board that shrinks a desktop computer down to the palm of your hand.
The Gizmo is powered by a dual-core x86 Brazos CPU running at 1 GHz with an included Radeon HD 6250 graphics engine. Also on the board is 1GB of DDR3 RAM, a SATA, Ethernet, USB, VGA, Audio, PCI and PCIe ports, and a ton of GPIO pins that include ADCs and DACs. All this in a four-inch square package that boasts about twice the performance of a Raspberry Pi.
While the price of the Gizmo – $200 for an explorer kit - will probably preclude it from being as popular as a Raspberry Pi or other ARM board, sometimes you just need an x86 platform to do the job. With the powerful graphics potential of the Gizmo, we could easily see this board being used in a few computer vision or autonomous robot builds.

The Register tells us that Microsoft has begun squabbling with PC manufacturers over the reasons behind the failure of Windows 8. Microsoft is 'frustrated with major OEMs who didn't build nearly enough touch systems.' PC manufacturers have hit back, saying that they 'would have been saddled with the costs of a huge pile of unsold units,' claiming that customers actually avoided higher-end touch products which were available and instead bought lower-end, cheaper laptops while 'Microsoft is not blaming itself for' the failure of its own touch device, the Surface RT. The PC manufacturers' claims that touch is the problem seem to be backed by reviews, and some and opinion from user interface design experts. However, Microsoft sees this differently . Microsoft is planning to strike back at the PC vendors in February with Surface Pro; with a shorter battery life and much heavier than a normal tablet, this is being seen as a direct competitor to traditional laptops. By using its desktop operating system franchise as a lever, Microsoft will be able to enter the lower-specification end of the laptop market with a cost advantage which make make life difficult for former partners such as HP and Dell. We've discussed previously how some PC manufactures such as Dell have failed in generational change whilst others have diversified to survive market chainges; Samsung with Android and the (still) bestselling Chromebook. ASUS with their successful Nexus tablets. We also discussed the ergonomic problems which are claimed to make touch screens unsuitable for PC use.

WindowsAndroid is a very cool tool from the Beijing-based startup SocketeQ that lets you run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) as a native application on Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 machines. The creators tell us they have a deep background in virtualization, operating system, and graphics technologies, and have been working on the project for years. Essentially, WindowsAndroid allows you not only to execute Android apps on your Windows computer, but also use the browser, not to mention every other component of the operating system."

New research indicates that tablets sales will continue to prosper due to price drops and increased competition.
2013 already looks well on its way to becoming a key year for the tablet market, with international market intelligence firm ABI Research predicting global shipments to top 145 million.
The research suggests that price drops and growing competition from companies utilising Windows software will lead to bigger sales.
ABI Research also expects the ever-expanding choice of devices for consumers to play a crucial role in boosting tablet shipments.
Meanwhile, the report indicates an increase in the uptake of Windows tablets set to reach the market over the next 12 months.
Jeff Orr, senior director at ABI Research, commented: “The rate of innovation is slowing as tablet vendors augment their product portfolios to meet the needs of market audiences. The late 2012 launches of Apple’s iPad mini and a variety of slates based on Intel architecture and new Windows operating systems will only begin to show their progress this year.”

January 24th, 2013, 21:49 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has apparently blamed PC manufacturers for slow Windows 8 sales during the Christmas period.
According to Channel Register, the software giant sent out guidelines on what OEMs should include in Windows 8 PCs in order to maximise the users experience.
However, ORMs have hit back, saying that if they had followed the guidelines they’d have been stuck with a range of high-cost, high-price devices that consumers wouldn’t want or understand.
“Microsoft is very frustrated with major OEMs who didn't build nearly enough touch systems and are now struggling to find parts and ramp up. Microsoft says they provided very specific guidance on what to build,” said a source.
Now that there are a few more good Windows 8 devices out there, Microsoft is reportedly planning to reboot the launch of the operating system next month.

There has been a lot of talk about GPL being incompatible with Microsoft market place (as with Apple’s appstore). For example this Arstechnica post from 2011. http://arstechnica.com/information-t...re-should-too/
I think that this is pretty important topic now with WP8, since we could use so much GPLv2 licensed C++ libraries with our app, that it really hurts to think that the GPL is not allowed in the marketplace. However that is not true anymore! I just downloaded WordPress client from the marketplace, and you had to accept GPLv2 license before using the software. It seems that GPLv2 is acceptable now! However, I’m still pretty sure that GPLv3 is not compatible with appstore, since it has some DRM system on it.

PC has overtaken DS and 3DS to become the fourth biggest games platform in terms of boxed sales.
That's according to the latest data released to MCV from GfK Chart-Track.
The PC market has been in decline over recent years, with more consumers choosing to download games via digital distribution platforms including Steam.
But continued declines in the handheld space means the boxed PC games sector increased its market share last year. The boxed sector was dominated by Football Manager and The Sims, while new releases Diablo III and Guild Wars 2 were also amongst the top sellers.
The Top Ten Boxed PC Games in Full:
1. Football Manager 2013 - Sega
2. Diablo III - Blizzard
3. Football Manager 2012 - Sega
4. The Sims 3 - EA
5. Guild Wars 2 - NCsoft
6. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Bethesda
7. The Sims 3: Seasons - EA
8. World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria - Blizzard
9. The Sims 3: Supernatural - EA
10. The Sims 3: Pets - EA

According to Microsoft, the Surface Windows 8 Pro will be available for purchase on Feb. 9 in the U.S. and Canada. As anticipated, the Surface Pro will be slightly thicker than the Surface with Windows RT, and will weigh about two pounds. The tablet is powered with an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of memory. It also includes an 802.11 a/b/g/n dual band Wi-Fi, a stylus for pressure-sensitive input, dual 720p HD webcams, a full-sized USB 3.0 port, microSDXC slot, and mini DisplayPort. Since the Surface Pro runs Windows 8 Pro, it will work with your corporate infrastructure, as well as any older apps that you used on Windows XP to 7. In terms of pricing, the 64GB version will cost $899 while the 128GB will set you back by $999.

As soon as its next-gen Haswell CPUs ship, Intel will start to leave the desktop motherboard business. It will be a lengthy process, taking at least three years, and the company will continue to produce chipsets. The company will be focusing instead on smaller and newer form factors. For one, it will be working on its Next Unit of Computing (NUC) boards, which are 4" by 4". Legacy support for old motherboards and the new Haswell motherboards will continue through their respective warranty periods. 'Given the competitive landscape, it's not a big surprise that Intel is refocusing its efforts on areas that have greater potential impact on future growth. All segments of the PC business are under extreme pressure, with sales slipping and users gravitating toward tablets and smart phones. Focusing on reference designs for all-in-one PCs, Ultrabooks and tablets will enable Intel's partners to more rapidly ship products that appeal to the new generation of mobile users.' AnandTech points out that one of the reasons Intel put out motherboards for so long was to assure a baseline level of quality for its CPUs. Now that the boards coming out of Taiwan are of good quality, Intel doesn't need to expend the effort."

So it won't arrive in January as originally planned, but better a little late than never, right? Microsoft just announced that itsSurface Pro tablet will go on sale February 9th in the US and Canada, with wide retail availability beyond just Microsoft.com and Microsoft Stores. As you may have already read, the device will start at $899 for the 64GB model, and $999 for the 128GB version. Whichever you choose, a pressure-sensitive pen comes in the box; the keyboard does not (that'll be $120 or $130, depending on whether you get the Touch or Type Cover).
Also on February 9th, Microsoft is going to start offering a 64GB standalone version of Surface for Windows RT for $599 (the 64GB model is currently sold as part of a $699 bundle with the black Touch Cover). That's good news, we suppose, for folks who prefer the tactile feel of the Type keyboard. Or, you know, who have their heart set on cyan. Additionally, Surface RT will soon be available in 13 more markets: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. All told, that more than doubles the number of a countries where the Surface RT is sold. So, Western Europe should pretty much be set now.
Finally, in addition to those two tablets, Microsoft is introducing a bunch of accessories, also slated to land February 9th. These include three limited edition Touch Covers with funky patterns drawn on (we don't know about you, but we especially dig the skulls). It's not unlike the way Microsoft already sells artsy versions of its computer mice; indeed, a Microsoft rep told us the company intends to release even more special editions, the same way it keeps swapping in new mouse colors. Finally, Microsoft also announced the Wedge Touch Mouse Surface Edition, which is basically the regular Wedge mouse, just done up in the same finish as the Surface tablets. That will cost $70, while the limited edition keyboards are priced at $130 a pop. Hopefully we'll be hitting you back soon with a full review but for now, we've got shots of both the tablet and the new accessories waiting just past the break.
