Electronic Arts has said its digital delivery platform Origin has nearly 40 million registered users.
That's up a significant number since the firmreported 30 million registered users by the end of October 2012.That figure accounts for users across both PC and iOS platforms, but the firm doesn't break down how many of these registered accounts are actively used.
The publisher also notes that the service now has over 500 games on offer, including games from EA and from partnered publishers.
The firm stated in October 2012 that some 70 games studios sell their games through Origin.
The Origin client today went live for Mac, bring some 50 titles to Mac gamers including Dragon Age 2, Batman: Arkham City and a lot of The Sims games.

If you were wondering how well the public would take to a Microsoft-made tablet costing $899 or more... quite well, at least from initial impressions. The 128GB Surface Pro has sold out at Microsoft's US online store, and checks suggest a lack of stock at both the company's retail stores as well as Best Buy and Staples. Canada is facing similar shortages at Best Buy and Future Shop. Not surprisingly, storage worries (since partly alleviated) have left the 64GB tablet as the only one in consistent supply, and we suspect that the 128GB model in Microsoft's Canadian store won't last for much longer. We'd be cautious before declaring the Surface Pro a runaway hit, however -- there's no word on how many units each store had, and Microsoft has refrained from reporting Surface sale numbers to date. Still, the early uptake is good news for Microsoft's first foray into designing an x86 PC, and it shows that many early adopters aren't hung up on the price.

A few weeks back, we discussed whether a new GPU like the GeForce GTX 660 could breathe new life into an older quad-core gaming system built in mid 2008. The answer concluded was definitely yes — but many readers asked to reconsider the question, this time using a lower-end dual-core Core 2 Duo. The Core 2 Duo CPU chip used was a first-generation C2D part based on Intel's 65nm Conroe core. It's clocked at 3GHz with 4MB of L2 cache and has a 1333MHz FSB. The CPU was paired with 3GB of DDR2-1066 memory. The long and short of it is, you can upgrade the graphics card on a six year-old dual core machine and expect to see a noticeable improvement in game performance — significant gains in fact, up to 50 percent or more."

Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic II creator Obsidian is planning to pitch a brand new Star Wars RPG to Disney.
The move, of course, comes as the world still comes to grips with the news that Disney, fresh from the acquisition of LucasArts, is working not only on a new movie trilogy but also a number of spin-off movies based on popular characters from the universe.
In other words, the potential is nearly endless.
“I would say it’s within the top three pitches we’ve ever come up with,” Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart told Rock Paper Shotgun. “There’s a lot of different eras in Star Wars, and that’s what we would focus on.”
It’s not the first post-KOTORII pitch Obsidian has tried, either.
“We pitched a between-Episode III and Episode IV game [to LucasArts] because we think that timeframe is super interesting,” Urquhart added. “It’s the fall of the Republic, the extermination of the Jedi, it’s Obi-Wan going off and making sure Luke is OK. You have the Sith, but you have the extermination of all Force users except for very, very few. So it was an interesting time to set a game.
“We also latched onto it because it has elements people remember, but not the stories. It can just completely not involve [the movies]. It can tease them, but nothing else.
“It’s something we’re still hoping for, even with the Disney/Lucas stuff going on. It changes things a lot, but you know, we’re gonna push on it. We really worked on it hard and distilled it down to these eight or ten pages that really sold the story and characters. Then we sold it off to LucasArts and got a call back later that day. They were like, ‘This seems really cool. We want to talk to you guys, like, tomorrow about it’.
“We haven’t [talked with Disney yet]. We’re kind of waiting for the smoke to clear. But that’s one of my next big things to do. To kind of go over there and [get the ball rolling again].”

The latest AVG Community Powered Threat Report has revealed that children are increasingly writing malicious software.
The report dealt with the specific case of an 11-year-old Canadian child who had written a piece of software that supposedly added money to a selected Runescape account. However, once the user had entered their log-in details, they were simply forwarded on to the malware writer.
“We have now seen a number of examples of very young individuals writing malware, including an 11-year-old from Canada. The code usually takes the form of a basic Trojan written using the .NET framework, which is easy to learn for beginners and simple to deploy via a link in an email or posted on a social media page,” said AVG’s chief technology officer, Yuval Ben-Itzhak.
“We believe these junior programmers are motivated mainly by the thrill of outwitting their peers, rather than financial gain, but it is nevertheless a disturbing and increasing trend. It is also logical to assume that at least some of those responsible will be tempted to experiment with much more serious cyber-crimes.”

The new SanDisk Eye-Fi wireless memory card enables users to instantly transfer photos as well as videos from their camera to a nearby smartphone or tablet.
When within the range of Wi-Fi, files can glide to a computer. The user can then organise and share the content to social media or online sites.
Those who purchase the SD wireless memory card also receive access to Eye-Fi services such as Eye-Fi View, a cloud-based storage solution.
The SanDisk Eye-Fi wireless memory card comes in 4GB and 8GB capacities and features Class 4 minimum sustained write speeds, 802.11n wireless performance, automatic backup, social media integration and ‘endless memory’.
“Since 2005, we’ve been building an imaging ecosystem that delivers a connected photography solution that helps people more easily view and share their digital photos, freeing images from devices and releasing them into people’s lives,” said Yuval Koren, chief executive officer and co-founder of Eye-Fi.
“Eye-Fi’s convenient wireless solution and our high quality flash memory allow consumers to easily back up, organise and share their digital photos and videos,” said Pascal de Boer, vice president, retail sales, SanDisk.
The new SanDisk Eye-Fi is available through Peak Development now.

Activision has reported a World of Warcraft subscriber count of 9.6 million, as of December 31, 2012.
That represents a decline of around 400,000 subscribers since the company reported 10 million subs shortly after the release of its most recent major expansion, Mists of Pandaria. The release of that expansion signalled a rebound for the then-declining MMO, which had dropped to a low of 9.1 million before bouncing back to the 10 million mark.
The publisher noted today, however, that WoW remains the "number-one subscription-based MMORPG", and was one of two Blizzard titles to place in the top-10 PC games sales in North America and Europe in the calendar year 2012, with Mists of Pandaria taking the number-three spot.

When a company delays a product for "minor refinement," we typically expect to see small changes that contribute to a stronger overall product. That wasn't Wikipad's approach -- when it took its namesake gaming tablet into the lab for "minor" tweaks, it took a few inches off its screen size. The Wikipad is now a 7-inch tablet, slated to launch in spring for $249. It's smaller, the company says, but no less powerful -- it's keeping the Tegra 3 GPU the original build promised, not to mention 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 16GB of Flash memory, a 2-megapixel front facing camera and a 1,280 x 800 resolution display.
Wikipad's President of sales, Fraser Townley, told us the gamepad design hasn't changed much either. "We took the pinball wizard approach," he said. "We made everybody in the room shut their eyes, and try the controllers. It's not about the look, it's about the feel. Once we got the feel right, then we could worry about the look. That's how the ten inch was born, and that's how the seven inch stayed the same." The attachment boasts new buttons (now labeled a, b, x and y) with a chrome finish, but seems otherwise unchanged. Wikipad is mum on specific availability, but we're told we can expect to hear more after Chinese New Year. As the 10.1-inch original design? It's still coming, but Townley couldn't it narrow it down further than "before Christmas." Read on for Wikipad's official press announcement, or click here to find out how the tablet was cut down to size.

Still settling into Windows 8? Well, it appears that Microsoft'spreparing for a sea change, codenamed "Blue," that will alter how it approaches cross-platform updates. According toZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, an inside source at Redmond has indicated the company's desire to house all Windows Phone, Windows Services, Windows 8 and Windows RT updates under the Blue umbrella, though that won't necessarily indicate simultaneous releases. Far from it, actually, as the current plan is simply to schedule these updates on a yearly basis. Foley also goes on to note that for Win8, MS could ditch RTM releases altogether, in favor of feeding updates direct to the Windows Store and mentions that Windows 9 is still on track. What's not yet known is precisely what features this Blue crush of updates will entail. We'll keep you updated should this rumor prove to hold its water.

Microsoft is taking a ‘meaningful look’ at releasing a full Linux port of Office.
According to ExtremeTech, Microsoft is intending to develop a version of Office for Android, which is a Linux-based operating system, meaning bring Office to Ubuntu could definitely be on the cards.
It is expected that a Linux version will be made available in 2014, and if Microsoft does go ahead with this, it will be the first time ever the firm has offered a Linux version of its software.

Consumers will be able to get their hands on an Ubuntu handset in October, reports WSJ.
Ubuntu will hit two ‘large geographical markets’ in October, revealed Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth.
Canonical provides services for corporate customers using Ubuntu open source software.
Besides the date, Shuttelworth didn’t reveal too much, apart from the fact that North America was ‘absolutely a key market for Ubuntu’, and a number of carrier were interested.
Can any other operating systems really make a dent in Android and iOS’s huge mobile market shares? Well, BlackBerry 10 is certainly having a go, and Ubuntu is aiming for complete convergence across just about every platform that you could imagine, which is certainly something to stir interest.
The most recent desktop version of Ubuntu was downloaded 7,300,000 times in the first 24 hours of release.

Now that the Surface Pro is a fait accompli, there's more than a few questions circulating from prospective buyers. The project's Panos Panay and his team have stepped up to answer them on Reddit, and they've shed some light on just about everything, including later plans. The Pro-specific connectors at the bottom? They're for "future peripherals" that may require more power than the pogo pins do. The short battery life and limited free storage were also purposeful (if difficult) choices, Microsoft says. The company wanted to maximize performance while keeping the tablet reasonably slim, so it couldn't rely on a big battery; it included the space-chewing recovery partition as it wanted to offer the "confidence" of a failsafe rather than leave customers to fend for themselves. While the answers won't appease everyone, they at least put the design decisions in context. Hit the source link to sate your curiosity in full, or at least as far as an Ask Me Anything session allows.

Barebones mini PCs have been around for a while, and the latest one from Zotac is pretty unique. For $270, the Zbox ID42 offers a Sandy Bridge CPU, a discrete GeForce graphics processor, and all the integrated I/O and networking you'd expect from a modern PC. You have to add your own memory, hard drive, and operating system, but the latter shouldn't cost you a dime. The Zbox works well with not only Windows, but also Linux. Ubuntu even recognizes the included remote, which can be used to wake up the system, control XBMC, and navigate Steam's Big Picture interface. Team Fortress 2 for Linux is actually playable, albeit at a relatively low resolution and detail level. The hardware seems better suited to casual games. Zotac also makes a Plus version of the Zbox that comes bundled with RAM and a hard drive, but it costs an extra $130, and you can get much better components if you add them yourself. The user-friendly chassis makes filling out the system a trivial undertaking

Free-to-play FPS Bullet Run is to be closed down on March 8th.
Sony Online Entertainment’s PC shooter only went live in August, but billing for the title has already been cancelled with any outstanding subscription charges having been refunded.
Developer Acony will retain the rights to the code, but SOE says “there is no plan to relaunch the game at this time”. The game’s website and forum will also be terminated on March 8th.
The game’s community, judging by its form, is not entirely surprised by the news.
The critical reception to Bullet Run was both limited and damning. It has a lowly 53 per cent average on Metacritic, with PC Gamer saying in its review that the game was “a cynical attempt at milking players for money” that “plays like a tacked-on online mode for a single player game”

The release date is approaching for Microsoft's Surface Pro tablet, and reviews for the new device have started appearing. The Surface Pro differs from the Surface in that it runs a full version of Windows 8 Pro, rather than the tablet-centric Windows RT. It also has much beefier hardware specs: 4GB RAM, an Intel Core i5 CPU, and a full HD display with 10-point multitouch. Ars describes it as having the expected good performance at the expected costs of heat, noise, and battery life. "This is not an all-day machine. Surface RT probably is. But Surface Pro is not." The review praises the screen and the stylus, but points out some odd scaling issues as well. The Verge's review also mentions the scaling, and notes the strangeness of dealing with issues inherent to a Windows desktop OS — like antivirus — on a tablet. BGR looks at the big picture, calling the Surface Pro Microsoft's "declaration of war" on its hardware partners. All three reviews dwell on how the Surface Pro exists at the intersection of laptop and tablet, and doesn't quite fulfill either role. Ars says, "From the tablet perspective, Surface Pro is not acceptable. It gets too hot for a hand-held device, its battery life is woefully inadequate, and it's too thick and heavy to be comfortable to hand hold for long sessions. ... From a laptop perspective, Surface Pro falls down too. The traditional laptop has a stiff hinge to hold the screen at an angle of your choosing. ... In practice, the Surface RT and Surface Pro have a bigger footprint on my lap even than my old 15-inch MacBook Pro. And if I move a little, whomp, the screen drops off the back of my knees and folds out of sight." The Verge adds, "The real dealbreaker for me was that it's just unusable in my most common position — sitting on my couch, feet on the coffee table, with the computer on my lap."

Emulation rather than native ports the ideal technical direction forward for gaming on the platform
There is no business case to be made for officially supporting Linux with mainstream games as things currently stand, John Carmack has said.
Speaking on Reddit, the id Software founder said that while he would be tempted to port to Linux for technical reasons, such as using Valgrind, working on open source Linux OpenGL drivers and running experimental GPU features, the platform barely made it into his top ten priorities.
He also stated that while he was happy that id Software’s last release Rage ran in Wine, an emulator designed to allow the use of Windows programs on Linux, there was no special effort made to support it.
Carmack added his studio had previously tested whether the conventional wisdom that native Linux games was not a good market with the release of Quake Arena and Quake live, with these preconceptions proven right both times. He said that although arguments could be made that neither release was an optimal case, they were “honest tries” at breaking the market.
“If you fervently believe that there is an actual business case to be made for Linux ports, you can make a business offer to a publisher – offer a guarantee and be willing to do the work and support,” said Carmack.

Despite reporting a positive $311 million in revenue for Q4 2012, and revealing that FarmVille has made the firm over $1 billion, Zynga has announced that CityVille 2’s traffic has plummeted.
Zynga COO David Ko blamed the demise of CityVille 2 on a lack of lead time to properly test the game. The title will now close.
The sequel to what was once Zynga’s biggest hit, saw a massive loss of traffic at the start of December 2012. Figures dropped from 3.8 million daily active users to just 570,000.
Titles Party Friends and The Friend Game will also shut down.
As well as reporting $311 million in revenue for Q4, Zynga also announced that it is now a ‘mobile-first’ company, revealing it now has 72 million monthly active users on mobile platforms.
