Well, the Windows RT tablet market just got a bit less crowded, as Samsung has confirmed to CNET that its ATIV Tab won't be sold or distributed in the US. The company's decision is based in part upon feedback from retail partners, which suggested that such a product would be only modestly successful in the marketplace. Samsung also pointed to the lack of education about Windows RT, and suggested that it would require too much of an investment to properly inform consumers of the differences between it and Windows 8. Instead, the company will take a wait and see approach to gauge how the Windows RT market develops -- we've heard this line before. It's currently unclear whether Samsung's decision will affect the availability of its Windows RT tablets in other markets.

Although IE remains the one of the top browsers on desktops, it's being trounced on tablets and smartphones by browsers based on WebKit, including Safari, the Android Browser, and Google Chrome. Faced with this uphill battle on handheld mobile devices, Microsoft MVP Bill Reiss has suggested that it might be time for Microsoft to throw in the towel on Trident and switch to WebKit (though Reiss later decided he was wrong). But although there are lots of points in favor of doing so, there are also some good reasons not to, including security and a need for healthy competition to avoid having mobile developers begin to target WebKit rather than standards.

Bundling the latest games titles with new hardware has the ability to dramatically improve sales says Nvidia.
The PC components manufacturer, which specialises in high-end gaming graphics cards, recognised the trend following on from its recent ‘Gear up, Game on’ promotion which bundled its newest graphics cards with highly anticipated new releases such asBorderlands 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Assassins Creed III.
Nvidia based the initiative on recent statistics released by digital games distributor Steam, which found that 36 million gamers around the world lack the hardware to meet the recommended specification for the year’s biggest releases.
Matt Wright, consumer sales manager at Nvidia, believes that since gamers largely upgrade their system’s hardware to play the latest titles, the firm could incentivise the experience in order to offer benefits for both parties.
“The advantage of bundling games software with hardware is twofold; we see a tangible increase in hardware sales, not only for Nvidia but for multiple layers of the channel, and we provide the gamer with the latest games together with the hardware that gives them the best performance.”
Both distributors and resellers from within the channel have echoed this sentiment, recording a jump in sales for their hardware bundles amongst other benefits.
Jon Atherton, group VP at Entatech, said: “We have seen an increase in sales and it has opened up new opportunities for us.”
“Nvidia’s recent Assassin’s Creed III bundle capitalised on one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the winter. Many gamers were looking to pick up the game and it drove sales for many of Nvidia’s Add-In-Card partners,” Atherton continued.
Reseller Dino PC also celebrated the scheme, which boosted its sales throughout the seasonal period. Managing director Vladimir Kuznetsov said: “During the festive season many of our customers were purchasing PCs as gifts, so a bundled game was the ideal giveaway to entice customers.”
“Ultimately, we see a lot more sales for our gaming systems as the custom-built PC business is already very competitive, so the bonus bundled game worth £30-£40 can clinch the deal,” the MD continued.
Wright also believes that the success of the trend has had a strong effect through the channel as an increasing number of resellers are interested in participating in the scheme after watching their competitors reap in the benefits.
By bundling the newest hardware with the month’s hottest release, Nvidia has the ability to make its products stand out from the crowd and increase their appeal to possible customers.

I’m going to start out by saying that I absolutely love the idea of bundling the latest games with high-performance hardware, plain and simple.
I should also mention that I recently purchased one for myself as part of my newly built gaming PC. However, this is just part of my gusto for the concept.
First and foremost, common sense tells us that most of us upgrade our systems components in order to increase performance. Whilst there are many reasons for doing just that, those of us still clinging to our faithful desktop towers in the face of a tablet takeover will cite gaming as the number one reason for sinking more money into our pride and joys.
With this in mind, promotions such as Nvidia’s ‘Gear up, Game on’ make perfect sense – incentivise a product with something that its target audience will likely have an interest in already. I’ll be the first to admit that I fell ‘victim’ to this, going with the shiny piece of kit that gave me a game that I already planned on buying as part of the deal.
It’s not just gamers benefitting though, far from it. Retailers, resellers and distributors listen close as these bundles could be a saving grace. It’s no secret that software is struggling and retailers are finding it difficult to see the benefits. So why not use them to drive sales of another product area?
With the abundance of gaming hardware now available – both components and peripherals sellers can make it easy for their customers by bundling these products with games titles that they are likely to be more familiar with and make the process of buying new hardware a little less daunting.
Much of the hardware included as part of these collections is designed to offer optimal performance with the games they are bundled with. If a customer isn’t hardware-savvy, they're far more likely to identify a product based on the chart-topper it’s supplied with and will make the purchase in confidence knowing it will perform exactly how they want it to.

En Masse and Bluehole Studio have announced their subscription-based MMO Tera will be jumping on the free-to-play train.
The switch is expected to be flipped sometime in February, less than a year after the game's launch. A new item store with real money transactions will arrive alongside the Tera: Rising release as a method of funding the F2P model.
An optional subscription of $15 a month will score players an 'Elite' membership, which will provide an exclusive mount, boosters for XP, gold, rep, a higher daily quest limit, and other goodies.
Additionally, those who purchased Tera before the free-to-play version hits will receive 'Founder' status, which ignores the new restrictions set to be put in place when the update hits.

January 10th, 2013, 00:24 Posted By: wraggster
Valve is an unmistakable success story but the next chapter in the company's history is fraught with challenges and drawbacks.
If the Steam Box delivers to its fullest potential, then it will disrupt the home console space in a manner even more drastic than the Wii and the iPhone has. But there are crucial reasons why Valve, despite its unparalleled successes in the past, will not achieve this ambition.Valve's grand plan, when stripped to its bare bones, is to sell an additional home PC that sits under the TV.
It's something that has theoretically been possible since the early days of home computing, though there's not been much sign of demand for it. Valve's hope is that there is potential for this kind of device, and all it takes is a compelling software package - like Steam - to convince people to make the purchase.
The first problem is cost. Valve has repeatedly claimed that the 'Piston' Steam Box prototype - based on the X7a micro-computer - is just one example of many different versions of the Steam Box. This may be because that the micro-sized X7a is not particularly powerful current-generation technology that sells for $999 - pricey enough for a household's primary PC, and nothing less than extravagant for a secondary model just for the TV.
Valve president Gabe Newell says the company's own Steam Box will be "quiet and focus on high performance", while marketing boss Doug Lombardi emphasised that many prototypes are "low-cost, high-performance designs for the living room".
How much Valve can bring down the cost of its PC builds, presumably while not selling at a loss, will be crucial to the device's performance.
As Digital Foundry pointed out in June last year, the cheapest high-end PC it could build cost more than £300, and how much Valve will save through trade bulk-buying (after adding its own costs) may not be so significant.
In November I wrote how Nintendo faced significant challenges with the Wii U because it is not focusing on a single audience or concept. The same is true for Steam Box. It does not have the essential features to outright replace the desktop PC, and it may be too much of a luxury to be bought alongside it.
Some may argue that, in fact, the Steam Box is perfect for console owners - the demographic who would most benefit from a more 'open' high-powered system - but Valve's audience, and by extension those who care about Steam Box, is a vast group of people who already have PCs with Steam installed.

PC peripheral firm Razer has at last detailed its gaming tablet, which is now going under the name of ‘Edge’.
It was first revealed a year ago under the name Project Fiona.
The high-end device will run Windows 8. At the heart of it is a standard tablet that can be used with a range of accessories such as docking stations and keyboards to provide for a ‘full’ PC experience.
However, the star of the show is the Gamepad Controller which sees one analogue stick controller (that looks very similar to the PlayStation Move’s Navigation controller) placed at either side of the device.
The machine will come in two different SKUs, neither of which are cheap.
The entry-level model will cost $999 and houses an Intel Core i5 1.7GHz CPU, a 1GB GT 640M LE GPU and 4GB of RAM.
The Pro model will retail for $1299. It ups the specs to an Intel Core i7 1.9 GHz CPU, a 2GB NVIDIA GT 640M LE, 8GB of RAM and either a 128GB or 256GB HDD.

An anonymous reader writes with news that Microsoft is killing Messenger in favor of Skype. From the article:"Microsoft on Tuesday mass emailed its 100 million+ Messenger users to let them know that the service is officially being retired on March 15, 2013. On that date, all users will be migrated to Skype, which Microsoft acquired back in May 2011 for $8.5 billion. This means Messenger will be shut down in just 66 days. It will only keep working afterwards in mainland China, mainly because Skype is operated there by a local provider called TOM."Relatedly, an anonymous reader asks:"I am looking to build a Skype replacement for me and some friends and was wondering which languages you would use server side to handle all of the encrypted data streaming? I am thinking to use SIP on a centralized server (as NAT can be a pain to get through). The clients will use end-to-end encryption. Thoughts?"There are some alternatives already, for variable definitions of working.

Whilst analysts continue to slate Microsoft's latest operating system, the firm has celebrated its sales and compared them to the success of its predecessor Windows 7.
Tami Reller, newly appointed head of Microsoft's Windows group, addressed the crowd at the J.P. Morgan Tech Forum at CES, highlighting the operating system's 60 million sold licenses.
Microsoft later confirmed the sales within an official blog post.
Within the post, the firm indicates a "similar sales trajectory" to those of Windows 7, which launched back in 2009. However, the predecessor lacked the scrutiny and criticism received by Microsoft's latest OS.
Microsoft also confirms that its OEM partners have now certified over 1,700 systems to run both Windows 8 and its RT edition, whilst more than 100 million app have been downloaded to date via the OS' Windows Store.
Whilst the numbers are impressive, the announcement would suggest that sales of the OS have slowed significantly, given that Microsoft claimed back in November that it had sold 40 million licenses.

Nowadays, it's not really a question of whether tablet shipments will surpass notebook shipments, but when. Back in July 2012, NPD forecasted 2016 as the year, but today it's saying this year will be it. More specifically, NPD estimated tablet shipments will reach more than 240 million units worldwide in 2013, compared to the company's projection of 207 million notebook shipments this year. This gap is significant enough that, even if NPD's estimates are out by some margin, tablet numbers will still overtake those of notebooks."

'News title' rejected from App Store for 'solely targeting a specific race, culture and government'
Apple has denied a game based on the civil war in Syria from being released on the App Store.
The free title Endgame: Syria, developed by Auroch Digital, is already available on Android via Google Play, and is described as a ‘news game’ which sees users take on the side of the rebels as they try to overthrow the ruling party.
Apple said it had rejected the game as its own guidelines forbid any titles that “solely target a specific race, culture, a real government or corporation, or any other real entity”.
Game designer Tomas Rawlings expressed his disappointment at the decision, and said it was a shame given that Apple’s guidelines make it difficult to develop titles that explore the impact of how real events can affect people's lives.
“This decision is a shame really as it makes it hard to talk about the real world,” said Rawlings.
