The Room is a series of smart logic puzzles with home console-grade audiovisual sheen, made by a small studio of ex-Criterion staffers. It was a big hit on the App Store a few months ago, but in the last week it became more than that; Apple just declared The Room its iPad game of the year 2012.“To say we’re shocked is putting it mildly… ****ing amazeballs more like,” said Barry Meade, Fireproof Studios’ commercial director over email the morning after.

LGBT friendly relationships promised for Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion
Bioware's MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will have same-sex relationship options added with its upcoming Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion.
The game launched just over a year ago, and recently switched to a free-to-play business model.
In a "State of the Game" blog post, Bioware executive producer Jeff Hickman apologized for taking so long to implement same gender relationships, explaining that the free-to-play transition had put new relationship options on hold.
"I realize that we promised SGR to you guys and that many of you believed that this would be with a companion character," wrote Hickman.
"Unfortunately, this will take a lot more work than we realized at the time and it (like some other pieces of content we talked about earlier in the year) has been delayed as we focused on the changes required to take the game Free-to-Play. As we have said in the past, allowing same gender romance is something we are very supportive of."

Samsung has unveiled its enhanced Series 7 Chronos as well as the new Series 7 Ultra range, which will both be on display at CES 2013.
The Chronos is a 15.6-inch Windows 8 touchscreen laptop that comes with a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 processor and an AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU. Available in 4GB and 8GB capacities, the Cronos is expandable up to 16GB.

"2012 was a definitive year for Samsung's PC business – we expanded our lineup, taking advantage of the new form factors and consumer demand. This led to significant growth in the industry," said David Song, Senior Vice President of IT & Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics.
"In 2013, we will continue to focus on innovation delivering products that fit into customer lifestyles while maintaining Samsung's high-end design and performance standards. The new Series 7 Chronos and Ultra products are just two examples of what you can expect to see from us throughout the year."

Making games for computers is apparently akin to churning out sausage. For the most part, consumers are privy to the final yummy-looking package, give or take the occasional wandering bug that decides to crash their gaming spread. Underneath all that sumptuous, juicy meat, however, is a healthy helping of mystery meat. This includes the amalgamation of hours upon countless hours of the proverbial blood, sweat and tears piled up by the modern-day artisans who ply in the video game trade. At the top of their list of concerns? Making sure a game works across the multitude of computers that proliferate out in the wild.
With the industry essentially settling on NVIDIA and ATI/AMD these days, the narrowing of card choices to two brands has made working on compatibility "a little easier" than it used to be, said Travis Baldree, president and lead engineer for Runic Games. Note he said "a little easier" not "a cakewalk."
"Compatibility is always the biggest challenge -- it isn't a new problem at all," Baldree said. "The sheer number of permutations of cards, drivers, devices and third-party software -- and their unexpected interactions with one another -- can be a trial to deal with."

PC Gamer has put together a huge list of PC games that are due to come out in 2013. They've broken out the lists by genre, and each list is pretty long. It looks like a good starting point for finding the games you want to keep an eye on. Here are some highlights: Star Wars 1313: 'Early glimpses suggest the game will ignore lightsabers and force powers in favor of gadgetry and guns, and the claims are for a more grounded and gritty fiction, instead of the fruity pan-galactic melodrama to which we are accustomed.' The Elder Scrolls Online: 'The real reason to watch The Elder Scrolls Online is the talent behind it – the ex-Mythic developers responsible for the innovative Warhammer: Age of Reckoning and, before that, Dark Age of Camelot. Don't write off the old-school MMO just yet.' Mars: War Logs: 'Say it with me: a cyberpunk RPG set on Mars. That's all you need to know.' Ring Runner: 'Missions challenge you to escape exploding trenches, battle bosses bigger than your screen, race against NPC pilots and engage in spectacular space skirmishes in an engine modeled on the laws of Newtonian physics.' There will also be new installments of Dragon Age, SimCity, Grand Theft Auto, StarCraft, Command & Conquer, and Everquest.

One of the creators behind War Z, a zombie survival MMO that received a wave of criticism before being locked on Steam, has apologised to its players.
Sales of the zombie MMO were halted and some buyers refunded in December, after claims of “misleading advertising”, forum censorship and controversial microtransactions erupted within a week of its release on Steam.
War Z’s executive producer Sergey Titov has confessed that the game’s developer, Hammerpoint Interactive, failed to suitably communicate with players. He believes this was the cause of much of the negative feedback his game has received.
“I became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth of The War Z, our increasing number of players, numbers we were getting from surveys, etc., and I chose not to notice the concerns and questions raised by these members of the game community as well as others,” he wrote in an open letter.
“This failure is entirely on my shoulders and if anything I owe thanks to that vocal minority and admit that I should have paid attention sooner. I chose instead to concentrate on the bigger picture – my dream of turning The War Z from being a game developed by a small indie team into a large online venture, instead of addressing small things first and staying focused on the game issues.

The last remaining netbook manufacturers have both announced that they will not be making any new models.
Only Asus and Acer are still competing in the netbook market, but these two manufacturers have revealed that they have no plans to release any new netbook devices.
Asus recently announced that its Eee PC product line will end as 2013 starts, and Acer has said it has no plans to continue developing netbook products.
According to Digitimes, this means the netbook market will officially end after the two vendors finish digesting their remaining inventories.
Former netbook manufacturers such as Samsung, HP and Dell have all already moved away from the devices to focus on tablets.
IDC’s latest research predicts that 122.3m tablets were sold in 2012, with figure is expected to reach 172m in 2013.

As of Jan 11, EA will no longer have an NBA game playable online
[h=3]EA[/h]
[h=3]EA Sports[/h]ea.com
Electronic Arts has announced another round of online service shutdowns taking place on January 11. These shutdowns affect the 2011 versions of the entire EA Sports lineup, including FIFA Soccer 11, FIFA Soccer 11 Ultimate Team, Madden NFL 11, Madden NFL 11 Ultimate Team, NBA Jam, NBA Live 10, NCAA Football 11, NHL 11, and NHL 11 Ultimate Team.
With the shutdown of NBA Live 10's online services, EA Sports will have no NBA title with online, as it was the last release in the series. The follow-up, NBA Elite 11, was canceled, as was NBA Live 13 earlier this year. This means 2K Sports NBA 2K13 will own the online NBA crown until the expected September to October 2013 release window for EA's next title.
The Sims 2 for PC and Mac will also lose online services on January 14.

In their December newsletter, Open webOS announced that they've ditched the webOS-specific hardware interface that was part of Enyo 1.x for the Cordova project (formerly PhoneGap). Combined with the portableEnyo 2.0 framework, applications written for webOS are now portable to other platforms (and the other way around). There were also a number of other under-the-hood improvements:"This month we completed and delivered the pluggable keyboard project, WebAppMgr separation and upgrading to Qt 4.8.3. Work continues as planned on upgrading Qt5/webkit2 (more details next month). Also, the complete rewrite of mediaServer has been completed and is now undergoing internal QA testing, look for this to hit the repos in the coming weeks."

Valve has revealed the top ten sellers for the first of two full weeks of store-wide discounts during Steam's holiday sale.
Several heavy hitters were vying for the top spot, but in the end first-person hack and slash Chivalry: Medieval Warfare beat them all.
Skyrim would have likely surpassed the indie, but its franchise daily deal landed on the last day of the period, meaning more than half of its featured time is counted toward next week's list. Expect to see it again at that point.
Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, ArmA II, the THQ Collection, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II all hold the distinction of back to back appearances.
- Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
- Skyrim
- The Walking Dead
- Borderlands 2
- Far Cry 3
- ArmA II: Combined Operations
- THQ Collection
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II
- Saints Row: The Third – The Full Package
- Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition

Dune 2: The Golden Path is remake of the classic game Dune II – The Building of A Dynasty with focus on multiplayer gaming.
Quote:
Changes since 1.1.18:
- Official map pack is now included with each download (thanks to Frontliner)
- Choosing AI opponents now offers three levels of difficulty (1= Easy, 2= Normal, 3= Hard)
- Rocket Launchers now move slower than Combat tanks. This is to help them stay behind tank lines and also to remove the unnecessary advantage. Deviators also are slower, but have increased range (and being Ordos will be slightly faster anyway)
- Ornithopters now do 35 damage up from 25, and are size 8 down from 9. Buffs are due to recent increased range from Rocket Turrets and previous lack of usage
- Fixed bug preventing clients from being able to use Microwave power
- Fixed bug allowing clients to possibly queue more flyers than allowed

Cities don't just start out as metropolises, full to the brim with wealthy shoppers who live in penthouse suites. No, a city must work hard to become a bustling shopping mecha and beacon of wealth – and in SimCity, it's all about having a city full of Wealthy Sims.
Attracting Wealthy Sims to your town is the easy part; however, keeping them around is tough because Wealthy Sims are more sensitive to their needs and vocal when ignored. "Education, pollution reduction, better crime suppression, and consistency in all your services will become a priority as your Sims go up in wealth," EA says. A dearth of disasters probably helps, too.
Another crucial aspect is increasing land value, a byproduct of putting services and public transportation systems in place. As you build infrastructures, you'll start to shape your city and attract the corresponding kind of Wealthy Sim. It's key to build parks around your residential areas, giving the Wealthy Sims a much-needed place to go and offer condescending looks at the other, poorer Sims.

Dune 2 is a Westwood Studios game put together back in 1992, and it's probably best known for being the prototypical RTS, one of the first games to put together all of the elements that later led to the genre that made StarCraftand Command & Conquer so popular. An open-source recreation of the game was started up a few years ago, and that version has now been ported to HTML 5, which means the original can now be played online in your browser.
This version is authentic, but t's obviously not as easy or user-friendly as you might expect from a more modern real-time strategy game. It's a nice trip down memory lane, or maybe just a free introduction to a piece of PC gaming history.

Have you guys ever noticed how our money and a Steam Holiday Sale are never in the same room at the same time? Like, the same way that no one has ever seen Bruce Wayne and the Batman together in the same place? It's just weird, is all; almost as if our money was somehow being removed by the sale, or something.
Some mysteries will never be solved, we suppose. Today's Steam Holiday Sale offerings include 50 to 75 percent off of Skyrim, its DLC and its predecessors, 75 percent off various Grand Theft Auto games, BioShock and BioShock 2 for a collective $10, 75 percent off both Witcher games, Galactic Civilizations I and IIfor $6.24 and Payday: The Heist for $5.
