Valve's highly anticipated device has finally been revealed at CES in Las Vegas.
The modular computer, which is being developed by hardware maker Xi3 and Valve, was revealed at the tech show with the codename "Piston".
The device is designed speciffically for use with Valve's digital games distribution service Steam and its Big Picture mode, which is optimised for use with TVs and home entertainment setups as a console alternative.
Xi3 offered up an early demo version of the device on stage, which boasted an IO board with a single ethernet port, 1/8-inch audio in/out, SPDIF optical audio, four USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports (with one dedicated to keyboard input), four eSATAp ports and two Mini Display Port ports and one DisplayPort/HDMI port.
The firm shed little light on the devices remaining hardware, however, US site Polygon reports that the firm's chief marketing officer David Politis confirmed the Piston will offer up to 1TB of internal storage, whilst modular component upgrades will allow users to upgrade the system's CPU and RAM.
Whilst pricing of the Piston has also yet to be revealed, its heavy comparisons to Xi3's performance X7A range of PCs, which carry a price tag of $999, would offer an indication of pricing.
"Today marks the beginning of a new era for Xi3," Xi3 president and CEO Jason Sullivan stated.
"This new development stage product will allow users to take full-advantage of their large high-definition TV displays for an amazing computer game experience. As a result, this new system could provide access to thousands of gaming titles through an integrated system that exceeds the capabilities of leading game consoles, but can fit in the palm of your hand."

The TV manufacturer has entered the Windows tablet market with its Vizio Tablet PC.
Unveiled at CES 2013 in Las Vegas this week, the tablet measures at 11.6-inches, offers 64GB of storage and features Windows 8 OS.
Most other Windows tablets come with either Intel or ARM-based chips, but the new Vizio Tablet PC is one of the first to run tech from AMD - the dual-core Z60 ‘Hondo’ AMD chip to be precise.
The tablet features a 2MP front-facing HD camera and mini-HDMI and mini-USB ports. It weighs 1.66 pounds and measures just 0.4-inches thick.
Although this is Vizio’s first Windows tablet, the firm did release an Android product back in 2011 called the, wait for it, 'Tablet PC'.

We all knew it was just a matter of time, now it looks like Windows RT has been Jailbroken. From the article: 'The hack, performed by Clokr, exploits a vulnerability in the Windows kernel that has existed for a long time — since before Microsoft ported Windows from x86 to ARM, in fact. Basically, the Windows kernel on your computer is configured to only execute files that meet a certain level of authentication. There are four levels: Unsigned (0), Authenticode (4), Microsoft (8), and Windows (12). On your x86 Windows system, the default setting is Unsigned — you can run anything you like. With Windows RT, the default, hard-coded setting is Microsoft (8); i.e. only apps signed by Microsoft, or parts of Windows itself, can be executed.'

A new stable version of the Doom, Heretic and Hexen source port Doomsday Engine has been released.
You can find some shareware versions of Doom and other ID games at Q-Marines DOOM WADs Dat project page.
Quote:
Overview
In version 1.9.10 we are taking concrete steps forward in pursuit of several long-term objectives. A guiding principle has been to bring a new level of clarity into the internal structure of the engine while also preparing the next-generation incarnations of key subsystems: file system, resource management, and scripting. This means, though, that the number of visible changes is still significantly smaller than the number of internal changes.
We hope that this is soon changing as the pieces are now falling into place for us to start addressing UI and graphics related issues.
The work we´ve done in this release illustrates our strategy for realizing Doomsday 2: instead of attempting to rewrite everything at once and getting hopelessly bogged down with the massive workload, we are upgrading subsystems gradually, during many small iterations.
´´´End of jDoom/jHeretic/jHexen.´´´ We´ve made a fundamental change regarding game plugins. We are now using the main Doomsday version number (1.9.10) for all of the "official" game plugins (libdoom, libheretic, libhexen). This effectively marks the end of jDoom and the other j-ports they have been finally fully demoted from individual ports to mere plugins for Doomsday. However, we will continue supporting the j-prefixed names inside resource packages for backwards compatibility.
Highlights
- The longstanding gameplay bug that prevented a column from lowering on Doom E1M7 has now been fixed. {{sfbug|861}}
- On Linux, the FluidSynth audio plugin´ no longer requires FMOD to play music; it can send music directly to the audio output.
- Command-line tools for creating and editing data files (md2tool, wadtool, texc) are now included as part of the distribution packages. (Note: wadtool is only available for Windows in this release.)
- Bug fixes and stability improvements.
Progress on roadmap
Completed roadmap items:
- FluidSynth for MIDI playback: use system-wide libfluidsynth on Unix (pulseaudio)
- Remove obsolete j-prefixes of the game plugins
Progress was made with the following large roadmap items:
- Doomsday Script: merge Haw script interpreter from Hawthorn, native functions, Config.de, begun building the Standard Library
- Modularize engine codebase: regrouped engine sources by domain
- Refactor engine into a shared library: relocated fixed-point math, Animator, Point, Rect, Size, StringArray and timer to libdeng1, PathTree and json moved to libdeng2
- Internal file system: refactoring FS1 and dependent code towards the libdeng2 FS in preparation of an eventual merge/replacement; added persist.pack
- Began work on Unicode strings: many parts of the engine´s internal file system have been revised to use Unicode text (but full Unicode support isn´t working yet)
- Stage 1 of Drop Snowberry: remove display config options as these are handled by the engine itself
Upgrading
If you are upgrading an existing installation of Doomsday, note the following:
Your automatic update preferences, main window position, and display mode will be reset to the default settings. This information is no longer stored in the system registry (on Windows) or other system-provided configuration files. Instead, it is saved in persist.pack in your runtime folder.
The default display mode is now your desktop resolution. (Previously it has been 640 x 480.)
Patch release for Version 1.9.10 that improves the stability of the engine and fixes some incorrect behavior.
Fixes
- Map Renderer: Secret exit switch coords in DOOM E3M6
- OpenAL: Compilation failure with integer conversion in 64-bit build
- Fatal exception about failure to get a lock (bug in de::Lockable)
- Handle exception if failed to open log output file (e.g., starting a second instance of Doomsday when running a dedicated server on the same machine)

After breaking into the PC market last year, it was only a matter of time before Vizio released its first Windows 8 tablet. The company just announced the Vizio Tablet PC, an 11.6-inch slate running full Windows (i.e., none of this RT business). What's interesting is the combination of specs here: on the one hand, it packs a dual-core, 1GHz AMD Z60 chip, making it among the first Windows 8 tablets with an AMD processor inside. At the same time, it rocks a 1080p display -- not the sort of resolution you'd expect to find on a low-power tablet with a Z-series or Intel Atom CPU. Also, like the rest of Vizio's PCs, this has a Microsoft Signature software install, with zero bloatware. Otherwise, the specs are pretty standard: 2GB of RAM, 64GB of solid-state storage, a 2-megapixel front camera and micro-HDMI / micro-USB ports. Vizio hasn't announced pricing or exact availability just yet, but we hope to get hands-on with this thing very, very soon.

NVIDIA on Saturday quietly released a driver update (version 310.90) that fixes a recently-uncovered security vulnerability in the NVIDIA Display Driver service (nvvsvc.exe). The vulnerability was disclosed on Christmas day by Peter Winter-Smith, a researcher from the U.K. According to Rapid7's HD Moore, the vulnerability allows a remote attacker with a valid domain account to gain super-user access to any desktop or laptop running the vulnerable service, and allows an attacker (or rogue user) with a low-privileged account to gain super-access to their own system. In addition to the security fix, driver version 310.90 addresses other bugs and brings performance increases for several games and applications for a number of GPUs including the GeForce 400/500/600 Series.

It looks like the recent success of Linux gaming has caught Blizzard's eye. According to "a reliable source at the company" 2013 will be the year that "at least one of their very popular titles will see a release for Ubuntu Linux." From the article: "It's been a poorly-kept secret that Blizzard has a native Linux client of World of Warcraft. As recently as 2011, the World of Warcraft Linux client was still being maintained internally. The client has been around for years and done by their own developers as a form of testing for the popular MMORPG currently offered on Windows and Mac OS X. As for why they haven't released the client, it's come down to "targeting a specific version of the platform" with Linux being "unstandardized" due to the many different distributions. There's still some fundamental problems with gaming on Linux. With World of Warcraft working generally fine under Wine as well, the company is further unmotivated to officially support a Linux build of the game.

Three 007 games have been removed from Valve's leading downloads store, as well as Activision's own digital portal.
Steam users were the first to notice that 007 Legends, 007 Blood Stone and Quantum of Solace are now missing from the service, according to VG247. It was later found that they have also been removed from store.activision.com.
The trio constitutes Activision's entire PC catalogue of James Bond titles. 2010's GoldenEye was only released on consoles.
Speculation suggests Activision's rights to the Bond licence, which it picked up in 2006, have expired. Alternatively, this could be in the wake of Eurocom's closure last month – 007 Legends was the studio's last release.
MCV has contacted both Activision and Bond owners EON Productions for comment.

Leaving free-to-play title frees up developer for new projects
Gas Powered Games will not be adding any new content to Age of Empires Online after its final content update.
In a frank blog post from the Redmond developer, it explains that a small amount of content is scheduled to be released in a few weeks time for the free-to-play game, but that’s it. There will be no further content after that.
Despite this, the game will still be playable with all six civilizations, and its community team will continue to offer customer support.
Gas Powered puts its decision not to continue updating the game down to the huge cost of developing and maintaining it: “Creating top-tier content, as we have been for the last year and a half, is very expensive – too expensive to maintain for long, as it turns out. We can no longer afford to keep creating it. AOEO already has a very large amount of high-quality, hand-crafted entertainment, and adding more is no longer cost-effective.”
Gas Powered Games is an independent developer behind real-time strategy series Supreme Commander and the role-playing series Dungeon Siege. Since 2010, it is reported to have been working on a new RTS, Kings and Castles.

Epic's free development kit helped father make miniature racing game for son
A father made his son a video game for Christmas using Epic’s UDK. And he did it in less than a month.
Rob, or AggroFamily as he blogs under, is a graphic designer by trade, and his wife and seven-year-old son are both “avid games”.
On his personal blog, Rob explained that the idea to make a game for his son began when his wife suggested they all make their Christmas presents from scratch.
“With time short I had to make some quick decisions on the type of game and what I could accomplish in just a couple of weeks,” he wrote.
“I thought about using a pre-built 2D sprite engine that could be cross platform, but after looking through my options nothing quite gave me the feel of a complete game like I wanted.

CDPR describes Cyberpunk 2077 as a "multi-thread, nonlinear story designed for mature players", with a sandbox structure that'll offer "freedom of action and diversity in gameplay".
According to its story blurb, 2077 presents a "dark future" in which "advanced technologies have become both the salvation and the curse of humanity". Players will be set loose in Night City, a "sprawling metropolis", and its surrounding areas.

You can leave the TI graphing calculator at home thanks to this web-based TI-83 and TI-84 emulator. As with pretty much all emulators, this depends on a ROM image from the actual hardware to work. But if you have one of the supported calculators (TI-83+, TI-83+ SE, TI-84+, or TI-84+SE) you can dump the image yourself and this should work like a charm.
[Christopher Mitchell] calls the project jsTIfied because he wrote it in JavaScript and HTML5 (that’s where the js comes from) and it’s based on the Texas Instruments line of hardware (hence the capital TI). After agreeing that you’re not getting any ROMs from his site you can choose the file to load on your browser. The image of the calculator has working buttons and will show the boot screen just like the real thing. You can use it like normal but you can load load up programs for the environment. See this demonstrated after the break.
We’ve seen some arguments online about the price of the TI line over the years. Prices haven’t dropped much over the decades even though they’re making pretty much the same hardware. It’s cool to see someone figure out how to emulate the hardware — and on a web interface to boot! But we’re left wondering why TI isn’t selling an equivalent app for iOS and Android or at least leveraging what must be millions in each production run for a lower retail price?
