After officially breaking cover yesterday, an untamed image of Sony's forthcoming Xperia Tablet Z has surfaced on Chinese social network Weibo. While this blurry photo opp isn't the most inspiring, it does give an up close look at what this slab looks like without its makeup on. As a quick refresher, the waterproof Xperia Tablet Z features a bafflingly thin chassis (6.9mm), a 10.1-inch 1,920 x 1,200 display, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, an 8.1 megapixel camera and Android 4.1. If a poorly lit picture isn't enough to satisfy your curiosity, an equally dim video showcasing the unreleased device's UI has made its way to the web as well. Head past the break for a closer look at the Xperia Tablet Z in action.

JavaScript is the language of the client and it is becoming the language of the server. Now it seems set to be the language of Minecraft. ScriptCraft is a Minecraft mod that can be added to the game to allow the player to use JavaScript commands. Walter Higgins ported the Rhino JVM implementation of JavaScript in a few spare weeks over Xmas. Some additional JavaScript classes allow the construction of blocks making it possible to automate construction. It also provides a 'turtle like' drone class that makes it easier to move in 3D. It makes use of a fluent API to create a domain specific language for movement. As its creator says: 'Ultimately I think the ScriptCraft mod could be used to take building in Minecraft to a whole new level. With a full-blown language at the Player's disposal, it should be possible to create not just castles and forts but entire road networks and cities.' Most importantly of all, it not only pushes the boundary of Minecraft it also provides a way to get kids who are already hooked on Minecraft to start learning JavaScript."

New partnership designed to help inspire more students into jobs in game development
EA has agreed a deal with GlassLab to bringing a modified version of SimCity to the classroom.
The partnership is designed to help inspire more students into jobs in research, technology and game development and to help improve STEM (Science, technology, engineering and math) education.
Before the educational game’s release, a website called SimCityEDU will server as an online resource and community for teachers using the title to create and share lesson plans.
GlassLab is a US developer based at EA’s headquarters, and is sponsored by EA, the Gates Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the ESA and several other education-focused organisations.
The move follows other games being used in similar educational programs, such as Minecraft which is now being used in Swedish school Viktor Rydberg to help students learn about environmental issues and city planning.

Online multiplayer matches in the PC version of Halo 2 are about to get a lot lonelier than they already are, as Bungie will be pulling the plug on Friday, February 15. Matches over LAN will still be possible of course, but as far as playing through Bungie's servers, that's all she wrote.
"We've been monitoring the population for months," the announcement reads, "and it's been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less." So! If you're one of the 20 people left in the whole of existence that are still playingHalo 2, allow us to officially welcome you back to society. You'll be pleased to know that several other Halo games have been released in your absence.

As the wait for Warcraft 4 goes on, modders have released a new video showing off an in-development Warcraft RTS built using the StarCraft 2 engine. The mod, called StarCraft 2: Warcraft: A New Dawn, has units and buildings and environments familiar to the fantasy RTS series. The Blademaster is shown running about cutting up NPCs."Please note that much of this mod is incomplete," the modders said, "and when we are done, we hope that people will forget they are playing in SC2 altogether!"Will busy Blizzard get around to making Warcraft 4? It's already got World of Warcraft, StarCraft 2, Diablo 3 and the in-development MMO Titan on its books. Does it have the bandwidth to embark on another project?Former Diablo 3 game director Jay Wilson announced this week that he had stepped down from the Diablo team to work on something else within Blizzard. As a former Relic Entertainment developer who worked on Dawn of War, could it be a new Warcraft RTS?

Valve has said it has tracked DotA 2 at over 3 million unique monthly players.
That colossal figure has been reached despite the game still being in beta form, with over 100 million matches having been played."With over 3 million unique players every month, the Dota 2 community is blossoming into a beautiful flower," said Valve.
The huge success of the DotA 2 beta wasaccredited with playing a significant role in helping Valve's Steam platform to hit a new milestone recently, when it logged over six million concurrent users.
Valve yesterday released the latest DotA 2 beta update which, among a list of changes, added a new 'Least Played' mode to matchmaking, which forces players to choose from a list of their least played heroes.

While we can't speak for everyone, SimCity's urban construction triggers fond memories for more than one of us -- mostly the small thrills of building our first arcologies or getting statues in our honor. A chance to feed our nostalgia (and megalomania) is coming quickly with the advent of EA's beta for the SimCity reboot. Windows users who register before January 20th will get one hour's worth of game time to use between January 25th and 28th, along with an opportunity to provide feedback on bugs and play balancing. It's an almost cruel tease when we know we'll have to wait until the final version's March 5th launch to play more, or to play on a Mac, but we'll take the beta offer when many of us haven't seen a 'pure' SimCity game for a decade.

This should come as no surprise -- we reported the increaseback in October -- but Windows 8 upgrades will become a bit more pricey come February 1st. That means you have the better part of two weeks to take advantage of introductory online upgrade pricing of $40 (for the Pro version), before the sticker jumps to 200 bucks. Fortunately, you'll be able to utilize current pricing for the rest of January, including a DVD Pro upgrade available at retailers for $70. After the switchover, you'll pay $200 for a Pro upgrade, a standard edition of Windows 8 will run you $120, the Pro Pack will be available for $100 (upgrading from standard to Pro) and a Media Center Pack will cost $10. You could, of course, stick it out with Windows 7 or Vista or even XP for the indefinite future, but if a fresh OS is in the cards, now'd be as good a time as any to make the jump.

Don't yet have one of those million Raspberry Pis, but you're in the market for a tiny, cheap ARM computer? An anonymous reader writes with this snippet from geek.com:"VIA has decided it's time to update the APC (ARM PC) board with new components and the choice of two configurations. The new systems are called APC Rock and APC Paper. The hardware spec for both boards is exactly the same except for the fact the Rock ships with a VGA port whereas the Paper doesn't. The Rock also costs $20 less at $79, whereas the Paper is $99. The reason for the price difference is the fact that the Paper ships with a rather novel case whereas the Rock is a bare board. The Paper'scase is made from recycled cardboard attached to an aluminum chassis to help with strength, meaning it will keep the dust off the components and make it easier to carry while keeping weight to a minimum.

Angry Birds Star Wars was the No.1 UK PC budget game over Christmas.
Focus Multimedia – which claims to have held 25 per cent of the budget-priced PC market in December – told MCV last year it was confident Angry Birds would top the Christmas charts.
It is the second year in a row that a Focus/Rovio title has been the best-selling game of its category in December.
“Even though 2012 was a challenging year for many, people still want to be entertained,” said Focus MD Craig Johnson.
“The demanding climate makes our successes even more satisfying, and we look forward to a more prosperous, successful 2013.”

Home Retail Group revealed its financial results today, with multi-channel retailer Argos doing well over Christmas.
Tablets were singled out as a key factor, as total sales grew by 1.6 per cent.
Terry Duddy, Chief Executive of Home Retail Group, commented: “Argos had a good peak trading period building on its first half performance. Internet sales for the year to date now represent 42% of Argos’ total sales, within which mobile commerce sales grew by 125% as our customers took advantage of new tablet and smartphone apps and improved website functionality.
“As a result of good operational management and cash generation over the peak trading period, we now expect Group benchmark profit before tax for this financial year to be about £10m ahead of the current market consensus of £73m and the year end cash balance to be in excess of £300m. Whilst we anticipate consumer confidence will remain subdued in the coming year, we are focussed on delivering the transformation plan to reinvent Argos as a digital retail leader and the ongoing development of the Homebase proposition.”
While Argos closed some stores last year, many viewed the decision as a sensible way to cut costs and build on other areas of the business.
It looks as if the firm has been proved right for now. Here are some key points from the results:
- Total sales at Argos grew by 1.6% to £1,744m. Net closed space reduced sales by 1.1% in the period with the store portfolio remaining at 739.
- Like-for-like sales increased by 2.7% in the period. Consumer electronics continued to deliver an improved sales performance driven by strong growth in tablets, which together with further growth in white goods, toys and core electricals, offset weaker trading in the homewares and jewellery categories.
- The approximate 50 basis point gross margin decline was principally driven by the sales mix impact from the improved performance in consumer electronics and price investment, partially offset by the anticipated net benefit of favourable currency and reduced shipping costs.

As the Galaxy Note II sells over five million world wide, Samsung has released two new model colours for the device.
Previously only available in marble or titanium grey, Korea will be treated to the option to buy the 5.5-inch smartphone/tablet hybrid in ‘amber brown’ or ‘ruby wine’ as of today (January 17th).
With the clear global success of not only the Galaxy Note II, but also the whole Galaxy family, it seems a certainty that these fancy new colour options with become available in other parts of the world.
And it would be no surprise to see other Samsung mobile devices, such as the Galaxy S3 or the highly anticipated Galaxy S4, getting a flashy new set of colours to choose from as well.

Microsoft signaled its intent to directly back Windows 8 gaming before the OS was shipping, and it's proving true to its word through a new Play program. The team-up with NVIDIA brings Xbox (or really, Xbox Live Arcade) games directly to Windows 8 and Windows RT, with friends, multiplayer and other extras intact. An initial catalog won't move all our playtime to a Surface just yet, though. While there's notable titles like Ilomilo+ and Toy Soldiers, most of the 15-game library involves decidedly casual releases like Minesweeper. It's still a start, and more is coming: Microsoft tells us that the spring launch of World Series of Poker: Full House Pro will let gamers resume play on either Windows or the Xbox. We're not expecting a completely cross-platform Halo 5 anytime soon, but having a steady stream of familiar, tightly integrated games may keep some of us in Microsoft's ecosystem for a good while.

January 16th, 2013, 23:44 Posted By: wraggster
An enraged grandfather yesterday stormed out of a Dublin HMV store with three games in hand after staff refused to accept his voucher.
The Irish Independent reports that Eric Nolan purchased a €40 HMV voucher for his grandson for Christmas and was attempting to spend it on three games.
However, when staff said they could not accept the vouchers, as per Deloitte’s ruling, Mr Nolan refused to take no for an answer and pressed the point. When he failed to hand it over he decided to leave the store with the three games – Euro Truck Simulator 2, The Sims 3 Town Life and Rail Simulator – in hand.
Security staff followed him down the street but were unable to persuade him to hand the games back.
"Somebody has made a conscious decision not to pay out on vouchers and it's despicable," Mr Nolan stated. "HMV have taken hundreds of thousands of euro from the Irish people this Christmas and we shouldn't put up with it.
"We are a nation of sheep – but I was determined to win this."
In essence, of course, Mr Nolan is correct. It’s easy to excuse policies such as the refusal of vouchers as simply ‘a part of the process’ but it’s not. It’s a deliberate, planned strategy designed to save the retailer money at the cost of its customers.

BioWare has bowed to pressure to introduce same-sex relationships into its free-to-play MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, but has confined it to a single planet.
As reported by PCGamesN, the planet Makeb has been introduced in the game’s latest expansion, Rise of the Hutt Cartel, upon which is the only place in the galaxy where players can come across same-sex flirtation, romance or gay NPCs.
To access the planet, players must pay for the expansion pack, and they must also level up their character significantly to enter the high-level planet in the first place.
BioWare made the decision in the Old Republic’s initial development not to introduce same-sex romance or gay companions.
This means that, given the impressive amount of scripting and voiceover work involved in creating the game, it is now difficult for the developer to make changes to current characters, companions and romance interests, given the expensive cost of such an endeavour.

Samsung has lifted the veil on its new 840 and 840 Pro solid-state hard drives.
Having captured around 80 per cent of the global SSD market with its current portfolio, the vendor is keen to highlight its dominance of the category. And with these latest devices offering read speeds of 540MB/s and write speeds of 520MB/s, Samsung is calling them ‘the single best upgrade for your PC’.
“These two products are aimed at different types of customer and different types of usage but they’re both significantly better than other SSDs in terms of read and write speeds,” stated Stefanie Sears-Black, head of business development for memory in Samsung’s Note PC division, at the launch event.
The device comes with a suite of tools designed to make it as simple as possible for users to upgrade as well as a full upgrade kit, which includes all the necessary adaptors and cables along with an installation guide.
As well as offering superior performance, Samsung is making migration software available, which will create an image of a computer’s current hard drive and port it over to the SSD for an immediate and seamless upgrade process. At this time, the software can be downloaded at Samsung’s website but it will soon be included on disc as part of the SSD package.
In addition, Samsung will include ‘Magician’ software which is designed to monitor the performance of an SSD over its lifetime and will track and display wear and tear via a simple traffic light system while storage capacity will be tracked using a progress bar style display.

Blizzard will introduce a new dueling mechanic to Diablo 3 with its next update, patch 1.0.7.
The developer released new information today detailing the new dueling mode - which will be introduced instead of a previously in-development team deathmatch mode - along with other features. In Blizzard's words, here's how dueling will work:
- To duel another player, you'll need to speak with Nek the Brawler at the inn in New Tristram.
- Speaking with Nek will take you and your party to the Scorched Chapel, a new zone designed specifically for player combat.
- This zone has custom geometry and features four different areas: the church, the graveyard, the river, and the lake.
- Dueling currently supports up to four players in a Free-For-All format, which means you can battle your friends either one-on-one, three-player FFA, or a full four-player FFA.
According the developer, the intent is to "provide players a safe, opt-in location where they can fight one another for bragging rights (or maybe science) without the potential for griefing as it existed in Diablo II".
In other changes, the Monk and Wizzard will undergo a few balance tweaks, while item hunters will get new crafting recipes, and lots more. Get the full lowdown on what's to come on the official site.
