A new graphics card standard has been set and will be found lurking in the PCs of millionaires everywhere from later this month.
Nvidia has lifted the lid on its first consumer card based on its GK110 Nvidia Kepler design that can be found in the Titan supercomputer cluster. Which is perhaps why it has what can safely be described as “a pretty high RRP” – £827, to be exact.
But if that won’t make a big enough dent on the family gold reserves, Nvidia says you can join three of the cards together via SLI for a £2,481 super setup that allows gamers to “max out every visual setting without fear of a meltdown while playing any of the most demanding PC gaming titles”.
The specs are indeed impressive, although the highlight has to be the inclusion of “high efficiency vapor chamber cooling”. Or arguably the 2,668 GPU cores.
“GeForce GTX TITAN is a beast of a GPU – and the only one in the world powerful enough to play any game at any resolution at any time,” GeForce general manager Scott Herkelman stated.
“And, yet, all of this immense power is housed in a sleek, sexy design, so gamers can also build beautifully-designed PC gaming machines about the size of a gaming console, yet magnitudes more powerful and always upgradeable.”
The GeForce GTX Titan will be available from February 25th.

Linux kernel 3.8 has been released. This release includes support in Ext4 for embedding very small files in the inode, which greatly improves the performance for these files and saves some disk space. There is also a new Btrfs feature that allows for quick disk replacement, a new filesystem F2FS optimized for SSDs; support for filesystem mount, UTS, IPC, PID, and network namespaces for unprivileged users; accounting of kernel memory in the memory resource controller; journal checksums in XFS; an improved NUMA policy redesign; and, of course, the removal of support for 386 processors. Many small features and new drivers and fixes are also available. Here's the full list of changes

The vast majority of PCs sold by British PC makers are running Windows 7 — not Windows 8. PC Pro spoke to several PC builders, with some reporting as many as 93% of recently sold machines were on the older OS. One company initially sold its PCs with Windows 8, but feedback from users soon changed that. Customers quickly began to specify systems with Windows 7, those with Windows 8 'took delivery and wanted to change back to Windows 7' – a process the firm described as a 'nightmare.' Another firm found success by installing a 'start menu' tool on Windows 8 machines, and others said the switch would have gone smoother if Microsoft has offered a Windows 8 tutorial or better explained the new OS

Having completed the beta phase of Outlook, Microsoft is to close up its long-running Hotmail service.
According to Pocket Lint, Hotmail users will be gradually transferred over to Outlook between now and the summer. The change will be little more than superficial for the time being, as they will retain their Hotmail addresses with only the interface seeing any changes.
However, they can choose to opt-in for Outlook, gaining themselves an outlook.com email address and early access to the service.
Microsoft says that there are already 60 million active users of Outlook, making it the worlds fastest growing email service. It has already rolled its Messenger service in to Skype, and anyone with a Microsoft log-in will be able to access a range of services including Skype, Xbox Live, Outlook, Office, Windows 8, Skype and SkyDrive.

Windows RT, the version of Windows being loaded onto ARM-powered tablets and netbooks such as the new Microsoft Surface, has one drawback: there are tens of thousands of apps written for x86 hardware that simply won’t run on this new ARM-powered architecture. While this may present a problem for hospitals, banks, and other institutions needing a proper Wintel platform, we’re wondering how to get classic games such as Civ III and Age of Empires running on these new tablets.
It seems with a lot of black magic, [mamaich] over at the XDA Developers forum has a solution for us. He’s created a tool for running x86 Win32 apps on Windows RT. Basically, he’s created an x86 emulator for ARM devices that also passes Windows API calls to Windows RT.
So far, [mamaich] has been playing some classic Windows games on his Windows RT box, including Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and Space Cadet Pinball from Windows 95. A few utility apps such as 7Zip and WinRAR also work.
[mamaich]‘s plans for his build are to make x86 emulation more automatic without the need for a separate launcher tool. Then, finally, we’ll have the perfect portable platform for RTS games.

The still unannounced next generation of consoles won’t be able to compete with today’s modern gaming PCs when it comes to raw power.
That’s according to Crytek boss Cevat Yerli, who toldEurogamer that: "Without breaking NDAs that are in place, realistically, from purely a price point perspective, it is impossible.
"It's impossible to package $2000-3000 into a mainstream, let's say $500 console. I'm not saying they are $500 consoles. They may launch a console at $2000, but the consumer pricing is usually much lower than that.
"So, given consumer pricing, and given the cost of production of a gamer PC and the amount of watt of power it needs, which is like a fridge, it's impossible."
Yerli also added that Crysis 3 will return to the template laid down by the original Crysis by pushing gaming PC tech to its limits.
The 2007 title was notorious for pushing the requirements needed to squeeze out its gorgeous maximum settings. However, 2011’s Crysis 2 reined this in as the studio focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3 releases.
PC gamers made their displeasure known – and Crytek has heard loud and clear.
"This time around the consoles couldn't gain much more," Yerli added. "It was like a five per cent or ten per cent gain. That's it. But the PC version, because the specs are now much more evolved, this is two years later, effectively, this is two generations of PCs we could leverage and DirectX 11 is fully rolled out, so now we could really push it.
"I made a joke at one point saying, 'we're going to melt PCs,' and I think we are going to melt PCs again. People want that, and we'll deliver that.
"With Crysis 2 we tried to make the spec available to as many PC gamers as possible. Then we heard back from the loudest group, which was enthusiast PC gamers, 'our PCs are running this game at 200 frames. What the hell? We should be running at 30 frames'.
"Our graphics programmers said, 'we're going to give them a game they can't run any more’.”

Microsoft has confirmed that its Office 2013 licenses cannot be transferred between different PCs after they have been installed.
Whilst the firm previously allowed users to reinstall their Office 2010 licenses on new machines, Microsoft will not offer users of the new suite the same luxury.
Microsoft confirmed the news following a query fromComputerworld.
Asking whether the license would be transferable, a Microsoft representative replied with "correct".
The representative went on to dodge questions surrounding the availability of license transfers in the event of system damage or theft, simply stating: "no comment."
Many have been quick to view Microsoft's move away from transferable licenses as a method of pushing its cloud-based Office 365 Premium service, which allows the software to be installed on up to five different machines.
However, unlike the standard Office 2013, its cloud-based counterpart requires a monthly subscription of £7.99.
Despite the claims, Microsoft claims it has been upfront regarding the issue of license transfers and the products its users should go for.
Microsoft's representative added: "We've been very clear in all of our communications that customers seeking transferability should get Office 365 and that Office 2013 is licensed to one device."

Data released by the Education Database Online has revealed that one in two parents join Facebook in order to keep track of their kids.
Parents were found to be concerned by today's increasingly digital world, which makes it harder to keep track of their children's activity.
43 per cent of parents admitted to checking their kid's profile on a daily basis, paying most attention to photos and status updates.
The number of parents on the site is only increasing, with 72 per cent of US mothers admitting to having an active Facebook account, compared to the 50 per cent just two years ago.
Check out the below infographic for more statistics on the parent-child Facebook relationship.

Microsoft has been having troubles keeping the 128GB modelSurface Pro tablet on virtual and actual store shelves, but it looks like the drought, as promised, is ending. The tablet's now up for pre-order on the Microsoft Store website with an estimated March 1st ship date. Best Buy will also be receiving shipments of the slate soon and is also willing to take your money now to reserve one. Alas, our friends north of the border in Canada are still without a 128GB Surface purchase option, but at least the folks at the Surface Blog have promised to provide more info on the matter sometime soon. Don't believe us? Head on down to the source and see for yourself.

It's no secret that copies of Office 2013 bind themselves to a single computer, but Microsoft has now confirmed toComputerworld that the software's license can't be reassignedto another PC, as is possible with Office 2010. When asked whether a license could be transferred to another machine if the original rig was destroyed, lost or stolen, Microsoft replied with a frosty, "No comment." However, Redmond did mention that the productivity suite could be reinstalled on the same PC after a crash. Just how Ballmer and Co. will enforce the policy remains a bit murky, but it's pretty clear they hope folks who have a penchant for switching up computing environments will be enticed by an Office 365 subscription.

Josh Tsui, current president of Robomodo and veteran game developer on titles like Mortal Kombat 4, Fight Night Round 3, and Tony Hawk Shred, has shared some video on Twitter of an old prototype for a Star Wars-based fighting game.
The footage, which you can watch in full below, features Anakin Skywalker and Darth Maul going at it with lightsabers, hacking away and using the force for throws until one of them is able to skewer the other.
As the description on the video says, the footage is fairly "repetitive," but it was simply designed to show off all of the potential moves a game like this could make. There was a presentation paired with the video as well, and Tsui says it was part of a pitch for a new game back when he was working at Studio Gigante in Chicago. We'd say his team might want to return to the idea for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, but perhaps it's better if the Jedi knights stay away from fighting games in general.

Linux has never been considered a player in gaming, but it’s never had a supporter like Valve before. Having publicly declared the recently released Windows 8 “a giant sadness [that] just hurts everybody in the PC business”, Gabe Newell is throwing his company’s weight behind not only legitimising the platform for games, but creating a new Linux-based console that will bring it to the living room: the Steam Box.Valve has several reasons to make this happen. Traditionally, PC gaming has been bound up with Microsoft and its technologies, such as Windows, DirectX and DOS. Love or hate Windows 8 and its shift to a more tablet-focused design, it’s been a cold reminder to everyone of exactly who owns the platform, and the attempted migration to a more locked-down world of Microsoft apps and services hasn’t been popular.
