Players rack up two billion hours worth of play
Popular free-to-play MMO World of Tanks has reached 45 million registered users.
In an infographic (pictured below), Wargaming.net has revealed that two billion hours have been spent in combat, with 600 million battles unfolding since the game’s release in Russia in 2010.
More than 13 billion vehicles have been wrecked, with 140 billion shells fired to inflict the damage.
The title has also surpassed its own simultaneous players record with more than 600,000 players battling it out on one Russian game server.
“Wargaming has demonstrated sustainable growth and solid performance during 2012, mainly due to the success of our headliner - World of Tanks,” said Wargaming.net VP of global operations Andrei Yarantsau.

Bloomberg has reported that HTC plans to manufacture Windows RT tablets, after being excluded from the first batch of Windows tablets earlier this year.
People ‘familiar with the matter’ told Bloomberg that HTC is working on a 12-inch device as well as a smaller 7-inch one.
If the rumours are true, HTC’s 7-inch tablet will be the first of that size to feature Windows RT, and could provide Microsoft with a direct competitor to Apple’s iPad mini, as well as Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7.
Bloomberg’s sources did not state any specific date for the tablet launches, but it is expected that HTC could unveil them around February – when a large number of new launches take place at the Mobile World Congress event.

Blizzard has issued bans to "several thousand" Diablo 3 players who were using bots, hacking or otherwise cheating.
"We've recently issued account bans to several thousand Diablo III players who were found to be using botting programs while playing," said the developer in a statement."In addition to undermining the spirit of fair play, botting, hacking, and other forms of cheating can also cause technical problems with the game as well as contribute to performance issues with the Battle.net service."
It added, "As always, maintaining a stable, safe, and enjoyable online environment for legitimate players is very important to us, and we'll be continuing to keep watch on Battle.net and take action as needed."
The developer also says that it will be "adding the ability for players to report this kind of behavior directly through the game client" in a future patch.
In the meantime, Blizzard points users to this forum thread to report players for cheating.

Who gives the official all-clear after the End of the World? We have no idea, but soon as the happy signal comes we're going to reconfigure our Linux-powered bunker for a spot of gaming. It's an eerily fortuitous time for that, in fact, what with theSteam for Linux beta now open to all and the Unity andUnreal engines also having been adapted for the open source OS. In terms of actual playable titles, Dungeon Defenders in the latest Humble Bundle is being put forward as the first native, commercial Linux game to use Unreal Engine 3, and if it proves successful then it'll hopefully inspire others to come out with more ports in lucky 2013.

Maybe one day it’ll be regarded alongside festive hits like Merry Christmas Everybody, All I Want For Christmas Is You and Fairytale Of New York?
Anyway, there's a song called Minecraft Christmas. The Official Charts Company has it at number 52 in the midweek UK charts.
English Band Area 11 are… oh, who are we kidding? We know sod all about Area 11. Here’s their Wikipedia page. Knock yourselves out.
It seems that the Bristol-based rockers have released games-based singles before although we have no idea of they’ve ever charted. Presumably not?
The layout of MCV’s news pages means this story needs padding by around another paragraph or so before we can insert the video. Which has to be done in raw HTML, incidentally. Is it Christmas yet?
Right, that’ll do:

Might & Magic will always have a nerdy stigma. It’s a card game that’s been around for 25 years, and it moves in the same circles as Dungeons & Dragons and live action roleplay. However, to call it a geek relic would be doing the series an injustice, and with millions of players worldwide, it isn’t exactly niche either. So, with the recent release of Might & Magic: Duel Of Champions – a free-to-play game that breaks new ground for Ubisoft by offering “true” cross-platform multiplayer – we spoke with producer Stephane Jankowski about ensuring the experience remains consistent across all platforms, using free-to-play to attract new players, and blurring the line between the physical and digital world.

39 games including Team Fortress 2, World of Goo and Frozen Synapse now available for download
Valve is now enabling all Steam users to access the Linux beta through the digital store.
There are currently 39 games available including the likes of Team Fortress 2, World of Goo, Frozen Synapse, Killing Floor and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, with the library of titles likely to grow over the next few weeks.
It is not yet known however when the digital distribution store will be fully rolled out on Linux, but given the beta is now open to all Steam users, it is likely not far off from a full release.
Valve began beta testing the Linux version of Steam last month by selecting 1,000 experienced Linux users to being testing the store on the OS, and going on to open the testing period to an extra 5,000 users.
“This is a huge milestone in the development of PC gaming,” said Valve co-founder Gabe Newell last month on the launch of the closed Steam Linux beta.

Peter Molyneux's crowd funding experiment succeeds with less than two days to go
22 Can's Project Godus has reached its funding goal of £450,000 on Kickstarter.
The studio founded by industry legend Peter Molyneux to launch 22 experimental projects has already released its first game, Curiosity: What's Inside the Cube?, and was banking on popular support to fund a new project.
That project, Godus, is billed as the recreation of the God game genre first conceived by Molyneux in his first hit, Populus.
The project got off to a rough start, launching without the explosion of funding that usually marks a successful Kickstarter.
Molyneux blamed the slow beginning in part to an "assumption of wealth"- people simply believed he was too wealthy to recieve donations.

Manufacturer said to be preparing to unleash a new tablet in Barcelona next year.
Reports are circulating today that Nokia is set to unveil a 10” Windows RT tablet at next year’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, according to the Digimites, citing supply chain sources in Taiwan.
The company, which is working with Microsoft, Qualcomm and Compal Electronics on its inaugural tablet, initially set out to develop a 10” Windows RT tablet built with Qualcomm's S4 processor in Q1 of 2012, with Compal serving as ODM, the report said.
According to the sources, shipments were initially put at 200,000 in order to test the proverbial waters of the market. However, with Microsoft later announcing the launch of its own tablet in the form of Surface, in addition to the fact that the market for Windows 8/RT tablets was yet to be established, Nokia ploughed its efforts into its smartphones. This ultimately put any potential for tablet development on hold.
At present, sales of Windows RT tablets are yet to meet expectations, and, according to the sources, Nokia is yet to make any solid decisions regarding its marketing plans.

As the demand for competitive, multiplayer gaming continues to grow, many are predicting that soon, gamers battling it out against one another on our TV screens will become the norm.
Often misunderstood as a level of gaming reserved for the world’s elite gamers, eSports in its simplest form is the notion of competitive gameplay, one that continues to go from strength to strength as games such as Call of Duty and Starcraft offer highly-engaging and deeply competitive multiplayer elements that pit players against one another.
The area has grown so much over the past few years that many believe the concept could soon be considered as a viable sport.
General manager of eSports at IGN, David Ting, believes that eSports could soon be a staple of our TV viewing like any other.“It’s really just a matter of time,” Ting told sister magazine MCV.
“We can’t know exactly when it’s going to be accepted, but if you look at the number of people watching, we believe that it’s going to be recognised as a sport by mainstream media in the near
future, probably within the next five years.”
Ting also predicts that as a result, we could soon see established gamers garner interest and generate fame just like any footballer or sports star.

Standalone DayZ rival The War Z has finally been released on Steam – and has instantly been slated for a host of technical compromises.
The vanilla version of the game costs £9.89 while other SKUs priced at £13.49 and £29.69 that include in-game currency. This in itself has irked some as it’s lower than the price paid by those who pre-ordered the title.
Most of the criticism is levelled at the game’s inaccurate description on Steam, which amongst other things claims that the game includes multiple worlds of 100-400 square kilometres (only one game world exists), private servers (there are none), skill trees and a hardcore mode (MIA) and servers that support 100 players (current servers support 50).
There have also been several complaints about legitimate players being incorrectly banned.
Others have also claimed that the number of zombies spread throughout the game world is minute and that most of the time is pent in combat with rival players.

BioWare is working on the first major add-on or its Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic – but it won't be coming to the High Street.
The Rise of the Hutt Cartel is due for release this spring and will only be available via download, according to IGN. The title went free-to-play last month.
Subscribers can pre-order it now for $9.99 while free players will be charged $19.99. Those who pre-order before January 7th will get access to the new content five days early.
The expansion adds new quests around the Hutt Cartel, as well as new creatures, battle stations, droids and weapons. It will raise the level cap to 55.
Star Wars: The Old Republic was released almost a year ago. While the original game has already been made free-to-play, some retailers might have been hoping for retail add-ons akin to the crowd-drawing World of Warcraft expansions. The latest WoW release, Mists of Pandaria, sold 2.7m copies in September and even boosted the game's subscriber base.
Of course, Star Wars isn't the only MMO to skip retail with its expansions. Lord of the Rings Online released boxed copies of its first add-on, Mines of Moria, but stuck to downloads for Siege of Mirkwood, Rise of Isengard and this year's Riders of Rohan.

NVIDIA's next superhero-themed mobile chipset has possibly made an early appearance in a leaked side in China, and it looks like it wants to go toe-to-toe with the latest processors from Samsung and Qualcomm. The Tegra 4 (codenamed Wayne) will apparently offer the same power-efficient 28nm process found on its Snapdragon rival and according to the slide from Chip Hell, there's a dizzying 72-core graphics setup. That's six times as many GPU cores as Tegra 3 -- the processor found in the Nexus 7, for example -- and the increase is claimed to result in six times the overall visual performance. Those graphics cores will be able to feed displays of up to 2,560 x 1600, with 1080p output at 120Hz, while the leak also mentions 4K -- if only in passing. We won't see any increase in CPU cores this time, with the same 4-plus-1 setup , but we are likely seeing a move to ARM's latest design, the Cortex-A15. Tegra 4 will apparently also catch up with USB 3.0, being NVIDIA's first mobile chip to do so, alongside dual-channel DDR3L memory. We've reached out to chipmaker and we'll let you know when we hear more, but it's highly likely we'll be welcoming this next-generation processor early next year -- say, at a certain mobile trade show.

It’s always a great shame when a game is cancelled, but much more so when a genuine original is lost. Catacombs, the Square Enix shooter that was revealed by Siliconera in April of this year, fell firmly into that category: its fast-paced, team-based shooting owed a debt to Valve’s Left 4 Dead, but its narrative was distinctive, dealing with themes of perception, existence, and social and cultural disharmony in an uncommonly bold manner. What began as a simple story of four treasure hunters exploring a mansion became something much more interesting.
