Shooter sells 130,000 copies despite 'staggering' amount of illegal file sharing
Indie shooter Hotline Miami has been pirated at extraordinary levels, the project manager on the title has said.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Graeme Struthers said that the title had been torrented illegally online at a staggering level, which was also not helped by the small size of the game.
"It has been torrented to such a staggering level, and given the file size of it, I mean, you can't really be surprised, right?” said Struthers.
“You could pass this thing around on the world's smallest memory stick. So it has been torrented to extraordinary levels."
Despite being pirated to such a large extent, Hotline Miami has managed to sell 130,000 copies.

Microsoft has announced that its tablets will be available from third-party stores, starting in the US this week.
Australia will closely follow, and a number of other countries will be added in the coming months.
“The public reaction to Surface has been exciting to see. We’ve increased production and are expanding the ways in which customers can interact with, experience and purchase Surface,” said Panos Panay, general manager, Microsoft Surface.
The Surface will continue to be available for purchase at all Microsoft retail stores in the United States and Canada and online in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Based on the success of the Microsoft holiday stores, the company will extend all of these locations into the New Year. These stores will transition into either permanent brick-and-mortar retail outlets or specialty store locations.
“Our plan has been to expand the retail presence for Surface after the first of the year. Based on interest from retailers, we are giving them the option to carry Surface with Windows RT even earlier,” said Steve Schueler, corporate vice president, Microsoft Retail Sales and Marketing.
Although Microsoft did not state which stores will be stocking the Surface, Staples has separately confirmed that it will be stocking the tablet in its US stores as if today.

It's still a bit light on specifics, but Microsoft announced today that it's increased production of the Surface with Windows RTand is planning to expand its retail presence beyond Microsoft Stores "as early as mid-December." That retail availability will initially be limited to the United States and Australia, with availability in additional countries promised in the "coming months." In a statement, Microsoft's Steve Schueler says that "our plan has been to expand the retail presence for Surface after the first of the year,' but added that "based on interest from retailers, we are giving them the option to carry Surface with Windows RT even earlier." If those locations don't cover you, Microsoft's also announced that it will be extending its current holiday stores into the new year, with "several" of those said to be transitioning to permanent stores. As before, the tablet starts at $499, with the Touch and Type Covers sold separately.
Update: That certainly didn't take long. Staples has nowchimed in and confirmed that it will be offering the Surface RT at its retail locations and online store as soon as tomorrow, December 12th.

If you use Chrome along with Google's Sync, you may have noticed something strange Monday: normally stable Chrome crashing. An article at Wired (excerpt below) explains why:"Late Monday, Google engineer Tim Steele confirmed what developers had been suspecting. The crashes were affecting Chrome users who were using another Google web service known as Sync, and that Sync and other Google services — presumably Gmail too — were clobbered Monday when Google misconfigured its load-balancing servers. ... Steele wrote in a developer discussion forum, a problem with Google's Sync servers kicked off an error on the browser, which made Chrome abruptly shut down on the desktop. 'It's due to a backend service that sync servers depend on becoming overwhelmed, and sync servers responding to that by telling all clients to throttle all data types,' Steele said. That 'throttling' messed up things in the browser, causing it to crash."

Lenovo has added touch capabilities to its popular ThinkPad ultrabook range.
The touchscreen version of the X1 Carbon has a 14-inch 1,600 x 900 screen, either i5 or i7 processors, Dolby Home Theatre v4 audio, backlit keyboard, Windows 8 OS, and optional built-in 3G.
With a 20.8mm carbon fibre chassis, the touchscreen capabilities add on 2.8mm, compared to the previous non-touch model, which measures 18mm. Coming in at just under 3.5 pounds, the X1 Carbon Touch is a smidgen heavier as well, but still lighter than a number of 13-inch ultrabooks on the market.
“Bringing touch gesture control to our best ThinkPad ever is a natural evolution of the portfolio and a big step towards fulfilling our promise to bring computers into a new PC+ era,” said Peter Hortensius, president, Lenovo Product Group.
“We are excited to be able to offer customers the best experience in a thin and light business class Ultrabook. The X1 Carbon Touch is the Ultrabook to beat.”
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch is available now with prices starting at £1,1899.99.

New research by IDC shows that the collective view of PCs, tablets, and smartphones reached a record 303.6 million shipments for the three month period ending in September.
The research reveals that Samsung and Apple were the top two ‘smart connected device’ vendors in the third quarter of this year.
While most market share studies are broken down into individual categories, IDC has provided research showing all PC, tablet and smartphone sales from each vendor, which it collectively calls ‘smart connected devices’.
Samsung took the top position with 21.8 per cent market share based on shipments. Apple, which ranked second overall in shipments, led all vendors in value with a total of $34.1 billion and an average selling price of $744 across all device categories.
"The battle between Samsung and Apple at the top of the smart connected device space is stronger than ever," said Ryan Reith, program manager, Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers at IDC.
"Both vendors compete at the top of the tablet and smartphone markets. However, the difference in their collective ASPs is a telling sign of different market approaches. The fact that Apple's ASP is $310 higher than Samsung's with just over 20 million fewer shipments in the quarter speaks volumes about the premium product line that Apple sells."

Denki's new game is officially "inspired" by Denki's last game. That's a good thing! Denki Word Quest is an HTML5 browser game that explores the gameplay of the word-based combat board game Quarrel in a new setting.
Instead of facing off against equal opponents for control of virtual land, Denki Word Quest uses words as attacks in a simplified RPG settings. So your quickest three-letter word built from available tiles can help you defeat a "Stinky Kitten" and progress on your quest.
Being a browser-based game, it's simple to try it yourself for free. If you decide you want the full-size quest, it costs £3, €4, or $5.

The kind of ridiculous THQ Humble Bundle has added yet another game,Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Game of the Year Edition. The space marine-filled RTS joins eight other THQ PC games including Saints Row The Third, Red Faction: Armageddon, Metro 2033, Darksiders, Titan Quest andCompany of Heroes and its two standalone expansions.
Dawn of War is now included for those who pay above the average bundle price, as are Saints Row The Third and Titan Quest. With said price hovering just under $6 as of this writing, that's a lot of games for not a lot of scratch.

Valve's Gabe Newell has said the studio was working on a tablet version of arena-based multiplayer title DotA 2, but the experiment was a failure.
Speaking to Kotaku, Newell indicated that, from a hardware perspective, current-generation tablets are not powerful enough to run the game."We were working on getting Dota 2 running on some tablets," revealed Newell. "That ended up being kind of a disappointment."
"But the good news is that tablets are getting faster very quickly, so I think we'll get the kind of performance we want and other game developers want in the near future."
Valve's Steam platform recently hit a new milestone by logging over six million concurrent users. The figure has been attributed to the popular Autumn Sale and the ongoing DotA 2 beta, which peaked at 170,248 players.
DotA has also been incredibly popular for Valve. Last month it released a documentary featuring interviews with the 16 teams who competed in a high-stakes tournament.

Teachers will be able to purchase the already-cheap Samsung Series 5 Chromebook for $99 this holiday season, Google just announced on its blog. Mountain View will offer the Chromebok for that discounted price thanks to a partnership with the online charity DonorsChoose.org -- and that $99 covers management and support in addition to the hardware. Public-school teachers who qualify will need to head to the Donors Choose website and to put in a request for up to 30 units. Everyone else can simply admire that act of benevolence -- or head to the aforementioned URL to make a donation of their own.

Right outside of Jagex’s foyer is parked a hulking black tank. At the back of the foyer – just before the entryway to a large, bright three-storey atrium – you’ll see lift doors decorated to look like those of a TARDIS and a Jules Verne submarine. Behind the reception desk, there’s a large flatscreen TV displaying a fast-paced trailer with a constantly increasing number overlaying it. Right now, it’s at over 204 million – the number of accounts that RuneScape has amassed over its nearly 11-year lifespan (though, due to a quirk of legacy registration systems, the figure’s really closer to 208 million). And opposite, above a large and voluptuously contoured purple sofa, are pictures of titanic Transformers in heroic poses.

Far Cry 3 makes it to the top of the Steam charts, beating off some fierce competition.
CS: GO has a 50 per cent discount and popular titles Portal 2 andLeft 4 Dead 2 currently both have a massive 75 per cent off on the Steam store, but all these impressive sales could not beat Far Cry 3 to the top spot.
The open-world FPS has crawled up to first place from its ninth position last week, despite being one of only a few titles in the charts without any money off.
Released on November 29th, Far Cry 3 is developed by Ubisoft and is set on a mysterious island.
Steam top ten as of Monday 10th December:
1. Far Cry 3
2. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
3. Left 4 Dead 2
4. Borderlands 2
5. FTL: Faster Than Light
6. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
7. Don’t Starve
8. Portal 2
9. Assassin’s Creed II
10. ARMA II: Combined Operations

Valve’s Gabe Newell has indicated that the company is working on a living room PC that will compete with the PlayStation and Xbox.
In an interview with Kotaku, Newell reportedly stated that, having recently introduced a controller-friendly version of the software platform and received a strong response from customers, the next step was to make PCs work better as living room devices.
The way to do that is apparently to introduce more PCs that are designed to link to a television and run Steam from boot up.
“I think in general that most customers and most developers are going to find that the PC is a better environment for them,” Newell told Kotaku.
“They won't have to split the world into thinking about 'why are my friends in the living room, why are my video sources in the living room different from everyone else?' So in a sense we hopefully are going to unify those environments.”
In the past, Newell has hinted at a Steam operating system and the software platform is already being used to sell utility applications along side its traditional gaming portfolio.

Harvey Anderson, a member of Mozilla’s general counsel, has slammed Microsoft for its refusal to share API’s that are critical to making browsers work on Windows 8 RT.
In a blog post, Anderson pointed out that it essentially gives Internet Explorer an inbuilt advantage over rival browsers from the likes of Google and Mozilla. As a result, there will be no version of Firefox that is compatible with the Microsoft Surface RT.
“Unfortunately, the upcoming release of Windows for the ARM architecture and Microsoft’s browser practices regarding Windows 8 Metro signal an unwelcome return to the digital dark ages where users and developers didn’t have browser choices,” wrote Anderson.
“By allowing only IE to perform the advanced functions of a modern Web browser, third-party browsers are effectively excluded from the platform. This matters for users of today’s tablets and tomorrow’s PCs.”
