Blizzard will release a patch for the StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm beta "soon" which will add a new 'Leveling' feature.
Players will be able to test out the new Leveling mechanic - a new progression system which offers rewards to players as they earn XP.How will it work? Here's Blizzard's explanation"
"In the Heart of the Swarm leveling system, players earn experience while playing Blizzard matchmaking modes and custom games on Blizzard maps. You'll earn XP for the race you're playing with each unit you build or destroy. Experience is awarded at the end of the match, and accumulates as you level up from 1 to a maximum level of 20 for each race.
"Getting into the game and playing as much as possible will earn you XP and rewards. Build up powerful armies, wreak havoc on the map, fight to the bitter end, and you'll be rewarded for your efforts! There will also be ways to earn bonus experience points for a match. We're already working on concepts like 'bonus XP for your first win of the day' and 'extra XP when you play in a party with a Battletag or Real-ID friend'. We're considering 'bonus XP weekends' and other sorts of activities, which will be tested in the beta.
"The Leveling system is how you will earn most portraits and decals in Heart of the Swarm. We're creating a multitude of new images for players to collect and display. Your cumulative (Protoss+Terran+Zerg) level will also be displayed right next to your player portrait, so others will be able to easily see how far you've gone in mastering the races of StarCraft II.
"Each level you earn awards either a decal or a portrait for the race that you're playing. These rewards get more and more epic as you progress in a race. The rewards will be different for each race, so truly dedicated players can push themselves to great heights for each of the three races."

Rewind through weeks, months, seasons, and the story of Populous begins with a simple misunderstanding. Commodore, fostering industry support for its fledgling Amiga during the mid-1980s, sought to contact Torus: a firm specialising in network solutions. An auspicious error led to an unexpected call for Taurus: a minor startup, barely founded, with a plan for a database program. Judicious use of language by Peter Molyneux during a subsequent visit to Commodore led to the not inconsiderable bonus of free Amiga hardware for his tiny company.

The guys over at Lavalit have released a new version of the beats of rage clone for the Dreamcast, Dingoo, PSP, Linux, Windows, GP2x, Nintendo Wii and Wiz.
OpenBOR is a continuation of the Beats Of Rage 2D game engine, which was originally
created by the wonderful folks over at http://www.senileteam.com.
In 2004, Senile Team released Beats of Rage, a free beat-'em-up for DOS inspired
by SEGA's Streets of Rage series and using sprites from SNK Playmore's King of
Fighters series. The game spread only by word of mouth, but it nonetheless
amassed popularity very quickly. Senile Team soon released an edit pack allowing
anyone interested to create a mod for the BOR engine.
In 2005, Kirby2000 asked Senile Team to open the source code to BOR. They
agreed, and OpenBOR was born. Development on the engine was continued by the
community, and still is to this day.
Heres whats new:
r3716 | utunnels | 2012-10-24 23:04:40 -0400 (Wed, 24 Oct 2012) | 4 lines
Changed paths:
M /engine/openbor.c
M /engine/openbor.h
M /engine/openborscript.c
M /engine/sdl/sdlport.c
Fix: shadowalpha 6 now works properly with corresponding map (inverted reflection, for example).
Minor: define savedata, savelevel and savescore in openbor.c instead of openbor.h; SDL port now uses pak name as window caption.

We began hearing grumblings of delayed Surface deliveries in the very early hours of this morning, and it seems it's not an unlucky few that are suffering, but an unlucky many. There were reports of delays to shipments in the UK and Canada less than a week ago, but Microsoft was quick to dismiss the claims as an error and put minds at rest. Now, it seems, the white flag has been waved and blame acknowledged. Eager to appease disgruntled customers, the company is offering a £50 or $50 Canadian coupon (depending on your accent) to spend in the Windows Store as recompense. While it provides little relief to those who had a shut-in weekend planned, at least you can trick out your new toy when it finally arrives, at Microsoft's expense. And, if you've received neither a Surface nor a coupon, we suggest you reach out for the freebie -- if your fingers aren't hitting tiles, they might as well be hitting keys instead.

It just wouldn't be a major Apple launch if there wasn't a Microsoft executive calling out his old rival, would it? In a chat with AllThingsD, Windows division lead Steven Sinofsky has expressed doubts that Apple's iPad mini is really a cost-effective pick against the just-launched Windows 8. It's a $329 "recreational tablet" when there are work-ready Windows 8 laptops that cost $279, he says. He added that there are at least a few touchscreen Ultrabooks that could undercut the non-touch MacBook Air on price, and he ascribed the difference as much to "engineering" as the cost-cutting measures you'd expect.
Sinofsky was naturally just as keen to champion the advantages for work that Windows RT tablets like the Surface have when competing more directly with iPads, alluding to that Office bundle which hopefully keeps us more productive than a copy of Documents To Go. The company President would certainly disagree with Apple chief Tim Cook's view that Surface is a confused product, calling it a "PC for everyone" that just doesn't have to be used all the time. He makes valid points on the sheer value for money that you can get from both Windows PCs and tablets, although it would only be fair to mention that he didn't touch on the currently low Windows RT app selection, or if the OS was exactly what the market wanted -- we'd do well to remember that Microsoft alumni have a spotty track record when it comes to predicting Apple's destiny.

Conceding that he hadn't actually played with one, Apple CEO Tim Cook told Wall Street that Microsoft's Surface tablet is 'a fairly compromised, confusing product' in the company's 4Q earnings call. Cook joked, 'I supposed you could design a car that flies and floats, but it wouldn't do those things very well.' In Apple's 2Q earnings call, Cook also mocked the idea of touch on a laptop or desktop, quipping, 'You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going be pleasing to the user.' Cook added, 'We've done tons of user testing on this, and it turns out it doesn't work. Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical.' So, is Cook just pulling a page from Steve Jobs' people-don't-read-anymore playbook, or is he unaware that children happily used vertical touch screens forty years ago on UIUC's PLATO System (morePLATO History)?"

another random user writes with news that Microsoft has sorted out the Windows Store guidelines such thatgames rated 'Mature' in the U.S. will be allowed. An earlier version of the guidelines took cues from the European PEGI rating system, which lumps pornographic content into the same rating as mainstream games that involve violence. In the U.S., they're split up into Adult (for porn) and Mature (for things like Skyrim, Call of Duty, and Assassin's Creed). Gamers and developers were worried that a large number of very popular games were going to be disallowed on the Windows Store. Microsoft hopes to have the situation fixed by December — not ideal, since Windows 8 is now out, but better than nothing.

"In an interview in Der Spiegel, Craig Mundie blames Microsoft's failure in mobile on cyber criminals. Noting that Microsoft had a music player before the iPod and a touch device before the iPad, he claims a failure to execute within Microsoft resulted in Microsoft losing its 'leadership.' The reason for the failure to execute, in his words: 'During that time, Windows went through a difficult period where we had to shift a huge amount of our focus to security engineering. The criminal activity in cyberspace was growing dramatically ten years ago, and Microsoft was basically the only company that had enough volume for it to be a target. In part because of that, Windows Vista took a long time to be born.'"

Reporters and security guards at the Windows 8 launch event weren't sure how to react when they were greeted by a real, live gnu. The gnu — which, on closer inspection, was an activist in a gnu suit — had come for some early trick-or-treating. But instead of candy, she had free software for the eager journalists. The gnu and the Free Software Foundation campaigns team handed out dozens of copies of Trisquel, a fully free GNU/Linux distribution, along with press releases and stickers. Once they got over their confusion, the reporters were happy to see us and hear our message — that Windows 8 is a downgrade, not an upgrade, because it steals users' freedom, security and privacy.

Intel has outlined its plans for the next series of Core processors expected to arrive after April next year.
Speaking at the EntaLive event in Bristol yesterday, Intel promised a ‘huge leap in performance with these new architectures’.
The chip vendor also promised a 100 per cent improvement in graphics capabilities, as the next generation would feature graphics capabilities integrated in to the silicon.
Unfortunately for users of the current generation of Core processors, the updated architecture will mean a new motherboard socket – the LGA1150.
Meanwhile the Celeron family is de to be scaled down and utilised in the small scale laptop arena, and Intel said that it has ‘seen the writing on the wall’ with regards to netbooks and so the Atom processors will be repurposed for use with tablets and other mobile devices.

Games studio Thumbstar has mostly been dipping its fingers into the publishing pie recently to offer its third party clients wider distribution channels.
However, it has put its development hat back on for new title, The Adorables, and has teamed with Microsoft to make it an exclusive Windows 8 product, which will be available for phones, tablets, and also PCs.
The Adorables is an arts & crafts style puzzler with a manga fusion, offering up more than 60 levels that feature hidden collectables and tasks.
Gareth Edmonson, CEO, Thumbstar Games, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be among the line-up of apps for the Windows 8 launch.
"To be part of the next generation of portable gaming with such an established and focused company, especially with such cutting edge technology involved, is a truly great opportunity for us."
Anand Krishnan, senior director, Developer and Platform Group at Microsoft UK, said: "We’re thrilled to have worked with Thumbstar in reaching an all-important milestone: a first title that has been developed entirely in-house.
"We’re really excited to support app builders such as Martin, Gareth and the rest of the Thumbstar team in creating games that consumers are going to love."

Think that iPad's Retina display is sharp? Ortustech would argue that it's old hat. The company's new LCD occupies a similar dimension at 9.6 inches, but it also carries an extremely dense 3,840 x 2,160 resolution -- making it the world's smallest 4K display at a time when most everyone else is struggling to produce the giant variety. Like with the Japanese firm's earlier 4.8-inch record-setter, the trick rests in a Hyper Amorphous Silicon TFT (HAST) that lets in more light per pixel and prevents that virtually seamless 458PPI image from becoming unusably dim. Test samples are rolling off the factory lines in November, although we're not expecting to see Ortustech displays in our tablets anytime soon: sheer performance demands aside, the narrower 160-degree viewing angles and lower 72 percent color gamut better suit the 4K screen to pro video cameras and medical monitors that thrive on sharpness over anything else.

Anyone wondering what Apple CEO Tim Cook thinks of Microsoft's new Surface tablet didn't have to wait long to get an answer. Cook offered a fairly blunt assessment of the device on the company'squarterly earnings call today, saying that while he hasn't personally played with one, "we're reading that it's a fairly compromised, confusing product." He went on to say that "I think one of the things you do with a product is make hard trade-offs. The user experience on the iPad is absolutely incredible," adding, "I suppose you could design a car that flies and floats, but I don't think it would do all of those things very well. When people look at the iPad versus competitive offerings, I think they'll continue to want an iPad."
As for Apple's own new tablet, the iPad mini, Cook dismissed the notion that it would cannibalize other iPad sales. "The way that we look at this," Cook said, "is that we provide a fantastic iPod touch, an iPad, and an iPad mini. Customers will decide which one, two, three or four they want, and they'll buy those." He went on to add that "we've learned over the years not to worry about cannibalization of our products. The far bigger opportunity is the 80 to 90 million PCs shipped each quarter. I think a great number of those people would be better off buying an iPad, or a Mac. That's a bigger opportunity for Apple. Instead of looking at cannibalization, I see an incremental opportunity."
