EA COO Peter Moore has described the pre-owned market as a right of gamers and retailers, and explained Star Wars: The Old Republic's business model change, in a recent interview.
"Used games were a bigger issue for the industry - I wasn't resigned to it, but I recognised that it was the right of gamers and the right of our retailer," he told Wired as part of a discussion about triple-A free-to-play titles.
"To be very fair, GameStop has always been very public about the fact that [they] keep the ecosystem moving with revenue that comes in, and it's not like they go and take their game credit and go to McDonald's and buy burgers. They re-up into new games."
EA is one of many publisher to use codes to limit and monetise online play for pre-owned titles.
"Our job is to take that consumer and say, you've got a used game consumer and embrace that guy rather than shun him and say 'no, not a penny of what we spent on this we get from you.' It's kept GameStop to be a thriving retailer unlike a lot of bricks and mortar. They've got 6,600 doors. I'm not sure they're there without having a real digital strategy and a used games strategy."
Moore also discussed the move that made Star Wars: The Old Republic free-to-playup to level 50, after it had initially gone on sale as a full price title with a $15 per month subscription charge.
"As we get closer [to release], you realise the world is changing around you…. We have to change accordingly," he explained.
"Now you've got a hybrid model, which is the way I like it, because I'd rather say 'give me all you can eat for 15 bucks a month and I'll play the game if you give me everything,' which is still available. But this fall there will be, we open up the funnel at the top, look, come on in, there's no cost to play, if you want to progress it gets better quickly."
"Price was always the issue…. You talk to people on their way out and say, can you tell me why you're leaving? [They say] "I just didn't want to pay $15 a month. I felt kind of locked in. I love the game, but I'm locked in," and for a lot of people 15 bucks a month is a lot of money."
"So when we looked at the data that was streaming out of it…. It was very clear to us that if we could knock down that initial barrier to entry that is price, that we could blow out the funnel and instead of dealing with several hundred thousand people on a regular basis we could get into millions. That was the plan. The world moved very quickly around us, and we had to react."

EA has reported revenue of $1.08bn for its most recent quarter, falling roughly in line with analyst expectations.
The numbers are slightly above the $1.03bn reported in the same period in 2011.
FIFA 13 was the star performer with total sales in the four weeks since launch of 7.4m units on consoles and PC, making it the strongest sports games launch in history. Madden sales were also up nine per cent year-on-year.
“EA is performing well, once again beating street consensus in fiscal Q2,” CEO John Riccitiello stated. “We delivered yet another quarter of sharp digital growth, with digital revenue up 40 per cent compared to the same period last year, reflecting our strength across multiple brands and channels.”
Digital sales were, as expected, very strong with revenues climbing 40 per cent year-on-year at $324m. And it’s not just platforms like iOS and Facebook that are performing (although day one FIFA iOS sales were up 62 per cent year-on-year) digital revenue in the traditional console sector is also skyrocketing.
“Record numbers of players have engaged in the online features and content downloads for FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, and Battlefield,” EA President Frank Gibeau added.
“On the strength of our digital extensions, FIFA and Battlefield are the two biggest revenue events in our company’s history. Both are well on their way to becoming billion dollar annual franchises.”
In fact, all’s not rosy in the once golden casual and social sector. EA’s MAUs are down to 42m compared to the 101m they had hit last years. And that’s despite registered users climbing 110m year-on-year to 250m.
Expectations for the Christmas quarter came in at between $1.25bn-$1.35bn, ever so slightly below expectations.

Microsoft's failure to include the EU browser ballot in Windows 7 SP1 cost Mozilla as many as 9 million Firefox downloads, the organization's head of business affairs revealed. Harvey Anderson said daily downloads of Firefox fell by 63% to a low of 20,000 before the ballot was reinstated, and after the fix, downloads jumped by 150% to 50,000 a day. Over the 18 months the ballot was missing, that adds up to six to nine million downloads — although it's tough to tell if the difference has more to do with Chrome's success or the lack of advertising on Windows systems. The EU is currently investigating the 'glitch,' and Microsoft faces a massive fine for failing to include the screen, which offers download details for different browsers to European Windows users, as part of measures ordered by the EU to balance IE's dominance."

We don’t remember hearing about the One Laptop Per Child initiative distributing tablet computers but apparently a couple of shipments were distributed to rural communities in Ethiopia. The problem one might think of in this scenario is that the literacy rate in the two test villages was basically zero. But that’s exactly the population targeted with thr technology. The tablets were loaded with a software package called Nell. It was designed to guide a child in self learning by telling them engaging stories that include teachable moments. If you check out the white paper (PDF) you’ll find it’s pretty much the exact same teaching technique that [Neal Stephenson] wrote about in his book The Diamond Age. But keep reading that paper and you’ll see that this is because the researchers took their inspiration from that very novel.
Well the results are in and apparently [Neal] knows exactly what he is talking about. Not only did the children learn from the software, but within five months they were hacking the device (which runs Android) to get the disabled camera working.

On Tuesday, Acer held a press event at London’s Science Museum which focused heavily on touchscreen interaction.
The Taiwanese manufacturer’s entire Windows 8 lineup was on display at the event, alongside a number of touch-inspired art installations including a digital ‘wheat field’ and an interactive material canvas.
Acer president Jim Wong explained: “All the products in the range have touch capabilities in order to introduce a new way of interaction.” He said that this new concept is called ‘duality’, designed to encourage users to move back and forth between touching the screen and typing on the keyboard. “It is a more natural and beneficial way to experience the devices,” added Wong.
The flagship model of Acer’s Windows 8 lineup is the S7 ultrabook, with an Intel Core processor, Gorilla Glass and a super-slim form factor. Acer premiered its new advertising campaign for this device, which featured actress Megan Fox talking to dolphins.
Other devices on display included the Iconia W510 10.1-inch tablet, which features a screen that can be rotated 180 degrees and a detachable keyboard.
Also in the tablet range is the W700. An inch bigger than the W510, the tablet comes with a cradle to position it in a number of angles.
Acer’s Aspire range of notebooks were also on show, with the ten-point touch Aspire V5 hooked up to sound and media artist Roberto Pugliese’s interactive fabric ‘PuShy’, offering a dual sensory experience of touch and sound.
There were three Aspire all-in-ones on display. The 7600U, 5600U and the ZS600 all feature ten-point touch capabilities and Intel Core processors.
Acer displayed its new touch monitor as well. Coming in 27 and 23-inch models, the monitor features projective capacitive technology, Full HD and can tilt from 30 to 80 degrees.
Commenting on the Windows 8 range, Acer’s associate vice president of consumer business unit Jerry Kao said: “We want the user to enjoy the technology, no matter that kind of product it is. We don’t care much about how Acer is ranking in the PC sales charts, we just want to make a better product.”

Microsoft has released a Forza Horizon SmartGlass add-on for Windows 8 PCs.
The free download, which will support additional platforms "soon", allows users to extend their racing experience by acting as an interactive map of Colorado, the game's open-world setting.Players can explore the map and set waypoints that are then added in-game along with new route directions. The map also includes the locations of special items such as smashable upgrade discount signs and new race events.
Microsoft launched Xbox SmartGlass last week. It's a companion application that connects with Xbox 360 to allow more interactive entertainment by enabling mobile devices to potentially serve as second screens and remote controls.

Electronic Arts' online platform Origin has amassed thirty million registered users, the company has announced.
Speaking at an investor call on Tuesday, the company said that nearly half of Origin's registered userbase comes from mobile. The group did not provide any detail on Origin's active user base, though it did say that about 4 million users are paying users.EA also stated that some 70 games studios sell their games through Origin.
Peter Moore, the publisher's second-in-command, last week told CVG that the company is focused on enhancing its Origin service on PC and mobiles only - suggesting that a long-rumoured Wii U edition is not likely soon.
Asked whether the full Origin experience will become available on Nintendo's Wii U system, Moore told CVG: "We haven't made any announcements on that".
"Origin continues to be a PC-centric service, one that's moving quickly to mobile, but as things evolve in the coming years we'll look at where the demand is. But at the moment Origin is very much PC centric and mobile centric."
Recently it was revealed that Electronic Arts had updated its user licence agreement to explain that all of the publisher's Wii U games will be tied to an Origin account. The deal between Nintendo and EA that has led to this decision is still unclear.

Although Microsoft's Windows 8 launch will very likely go down in history as a positive turning point for the company, it wasn't without it glitches. Specifically, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Microsoft reps in Taipei found it difficult to navigate their own OS due to hardware issues with their demo devices -- namely, new all-in-one PCs from Acer and ASUS. There were said to be issues with opening and closing apps, possibly due to the implementation of touch on such large screen sizes of 23-inches and over.
Well, we've just been fingers-on with both the 23-inch Acer Aspire 5600U and the 27-inch 7600U in London, and we can report that the touch interface was totally fluid. Moreover, the LCD displays maintained their natural colors very well when switching from an almost vertical 80-degree orientation to an almost-flat 30 degrees. These models come with Ultrabook innards starting with low-voltage versions of the Core i5 and the NVIDIA 630M, and they also come with HDMI-in and optional TV tuners so they can be used in a living room or kitchen situation. Pricing in Europe begins at 1,000 Euros for the 23-inch model, rising to 2,000 Euros for the full-spec 27-incher. Check out the video after the break and you'll see that we asked our Acer rep for his view on what happened in Taiwan and, although he didn't have first-hand knowledge of the event in question, he insisted that it was a storm in a teacup. Given our experience of the devices so far, we're inclined to believe him.

October 30th, 2012, 23:57 Posted By: wraggster
At the Microsoft BUILD conference keynote today, CEO Steve Ballmer announced that the company has sold 4 million Windows 8 upgrades since the OSes launch on October 26, 2012. The upgrade is currently discounted to $15 for those who purchased a new Windows 7 PC recently, while others can digitally upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for a limited time for just $39.99.
Ballmer also mentioned business license for Windows 8 in his keynote, according to reporting by Ars Technica.
"We have sold tens of millions of units to our corporate customers, who can upgrade when they want to, but have no time pressure to do that any time soon," Ballmer said.
Microsoft did not provide any sales numbers for the Surface RT tablet that launched alongside the new operating system.

Free-to-play mech combat title Hawken has received an additional $18m in funding ahead of its December launch.
VentureBeat reports publisher Meteor Entertainment has brought in the sizable amount as part of its second round of fundraising, bringing the total to $28.5m raised thus far for the game.
Despite being an independent effort from relative newcomer Adhesive Games, the investment figure has reached AAA heights due to its sleek look, f2p monetization scheme, and (perhaps most interestingly) the opportunity for the game to disrupt the online gaming market.
“It’s clear from this investment that we do not believe the game industry as an investment category is going down,” said Nate Redmond of new investor Rustic Canyon Ventures.
“From watching disruption in multiple industries and seeing it come to games, that is appealing to me as an investor and a gamer. We see how quickly it is happening. The incumbents see it, but they can’t change quickly enough to capture it.”
"Our management team is full of gamers and we believe there is an opportunity to disrupt online gaming in China,” said Jay Chang, chief financial officer at Kong Zhong – another one of the project’s several new investors.
"We think Hawken has the potential to be even bigger than World of Tanks. The Chinese market is maturing and there are a lot of users for free-to-play games.”

Skyrim is receiving a premium edition retail release, at least for select countries.
A listing on Amazon Germany points to a December 7th launch for the re-release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
Along with the game, extra goodies such as a map, t-shirt, postcards, an Elder Scrolls novel, and a PC bonus disc that contains trailers, walkthroughs, music, and a 600-page strategy guide in the form of an e-book will be packed in.
Mention of any of the game’s DLC is nowhere to be found in the listing.
Bethesda has confirmed the validity of the premium edition toJoystiq, adding that for now it will only be made available in ‘certain’ territories in Europe including Germany and UK.

The US firm has announced that it will release its first ARM-based chips in 2014.
Advanced Micro Devices will produce the new chip based on the design produced by ARM and will be used to power computer servers that run websites and smartphone app services.
Making the deal even more significant is the fact that AMD, alongside Intel, has long been the producer of the rival x86 chip architecture.
Rival firms Dell and HP have also announced they plan to produce ARM-based servers.
ARM is set to benefit greatly from the deal, as the Cambridge-based firm only designs and licenses its chip designs and does not manufacture them.
AMD joins a long list of chip makers producing ARM designs, which includes Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm and Nvidia, who already produce the majority of chips that power the mobile devices market.
The move is likely to be a result of the growing demand for servers as more users use internet-connected devices and cloud-based applications.

IGF 2013 entry Atum is a game that lets you be in two places at once... sort of. The idea is that you're locked into a first-person perspective where you're sitting at a computer playing a 2D platformer.Hideo Kojima is probably kicking himself for not thinking of this first.
The WASD keys control your 2D game-within-a-game avatar, while your mouse looks around a white, sterile Mirror's Edge-esque room where you can pick up objects that manipulate the 2D game. Can't get through security lasers? Light up some cigarettes in the "real world" (i.e. the 3D world) and watch the smoke drown out the game-within-a-game's beams. Need to move some metal boxes? Pick up a magnet and hold it next to the relevant part of the screen.Developer Team Cupcake - a group of third year students at the Netherlands' NHTV Breda University - noted Atum was inspired by such sci-fi classics as Blade Runner and Philip K. Dick's Martian Time Slip. There are plenty of heady philosophical allusions in the game too, with books like The Unbearable Lightness of Being scattered throughout the environment. The puzzles themselves aren't that mind-bending, though, and the controls can be a little unwieldy, but it's still a unique concept that's worth a look-see. Check it out here.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer undoubtedly knows that Apple has sold more than 100 million iPad tablets at this point, but according to the outspoken executive, that's not the tablet people really want. While speaking with CNBC, Ballmer said no company has built a tablet he believes customers want. 'You can go through the products from all those guys and none of them has a product that you can really use. Not Apple. Not Google. Not Amazon. Nobody has a product that lets you work and play that can be your tablet and your PC. Not at any price point,' he says."

The number of consumers using mobile devices as their primary gateway to the internet continues to increase, with many making the move away from PC-based internet usage, IDC has reported.
Leading the trend is the US, with Western Europe and Japan following at around two years behind. It is thought that the number of people using PCs to access the web will fall from 240 million in 2012 to 225 million in 2016, while the number of mobile users will rise from 174 million to 265 million.
This means that in 2015 there will be more US consumers accessing the Internet through mobile devices instead of PCs for the first time ever.
Karsten Weide, programme VP of media & entertainment at IDC, said: "In the consumer world, mobile internet usage is already beginning to displace PC usage, and the United States is leading this trend.
"There has been much talk about how the future of the internet will be mobile first and PC second. In the United States, that future is now."
The IDC report has also found that online PC activities will decrease, with the number of people using social networks such as Facebook on their PCs dropping from 66 per cent in 2012 to 52 per cent in 2016. Furthermore, the report suggests that international mobile advertising will almost quintuple from $6 billion to $28.8 billion in 2016.
Meanwhile, worldwide business-to-consumer (B2C) m-commerce spending looks set to grow six fold between 2011 and 2016, reaching $223 billion at the end of the forecast period.
"The Great PC Exodus on the Internet is happening because the PC was never truly a consumer product," added Weide. "Many consumers use them because there was no better alternative. Now, with the huge and growing installed base of more user-friendly tablets and smartphones, there are."

Windows and free pinball games go together like computer labs and bored high-school students, and Microsoft's shiny new Windows 8 platform will be no exception to that rule, as Zen Studios has launched Pinball FX 2 on the new OS' Microsoft Store app repository.
The free download includes one table ("Mars," specifically), with 18 other tables available for $2.99 each, including Marvel-branded jams such as "Thor," "The Infinity Gauntlet" and "Marvel's The Avengers." Zen plans to support the Windows 8 version with new DLC just as it has the XBLA version, though no amount of DLC will complete that essay on Uncle Tom's Cabin that you're supposed to be working on.
