The most stylish entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, Vice City, is on sale today through Steam. The fast boats, quick carjackings and speedball simulator is 75 percent off, making the game a mere $2.49.
To think, back in the '80s, one could get two gallons of gas for that price.

Google's new ARM-powered Chromebookisn't a lot of things: it isn't a full-fledged laptop, it's not a tablet (doesn't even have a touch screen); and by design it's not very good as a stand-alone device. Eric Lai at ZDNet, though, thinks Chromebooks are (with the price drop that accompanies the newest version) a good fit for business customers, at least "for white-collar employees and other workers who rarely stray away from their corporate campus and its Wi-Fi network." Lai lists some interesting large-scale rollouts with Chromebooks, including 19,000 of them in a South Carolina school district. Schools probably especially like the control that ChromeOS means for the laptops they administer. For those who'd like to have a more conventional but still lightweight ARM laptop, I wonder how quickly the ARM variant of Ubuntu will land on the new version. (Looks like I'm not the only one to leap to that thought.)

Platform has driven a higher response rate than phones over past six months.
On average, the global tablet advertising spend in the UK and US powered a four times greater conversion rate than mobile phones between April to October 2012, according to data from marketing firm M&C Saatchi Mobile.
In fact, the conversion rate spikes to five-six times higher when companies target the ads specifically to their audience.
Saatchi expects tablet ad spends to outpace those of handsets for the first time ever this Christmas, with brands set to pay out 25 per cent more than usual on tablet-based campaigns.
Retailers are advised to make sure their sites are tablet-optimised, with ads targeted towards a shopper's demographic to provide a comfortable browsing experience.
Interestingly, location-based ads are incorporated into fewer than ten per cent of campaigns because most tablet shoppers browse from the sofa, though the rise of portable seven-inch tablets are set to change that.
James Hilton, CEO, M&C Saatchi Mobile, said: "Since the introduction of the iPad, brands and marketers have been trying to work out what exactly it meant for them.
"The impact has been far beyond what anyone really expected. With the current and forthcoming releases of more affordable, sub £200 devices such as Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Google Nexus 7, as well as other high-end devices such as the Microsoft Surface then we believe the impact of tablets upon mobile advertising will continue to increase after the Christmas period.
"This Christmas heralds a major sea change in the mass market adoption of tablets.
"The possibilities to deliver rich media and interactive messaging lead to far better creativity in campaigns. This medium blends the best of TV with the best of interactivity."

Jason Rohrer, the developer behind such unconventional cult hits as Diamond Trust of London, Sleep is Death and Inside a Star-Filled Sky, has a new game in the works titled The Castle Doctrine. It's "a massively multiplayer game of burglary and home defense" and will come soon to PC, Mac and Linux, according to its official site (which is pretty barebones at the moment).
The website does reveal a few images, two of which are side-by-side above, showing what we can assume is The Castle Doctrine, unless Rohrer is trying to really confuse everyone. It looks to be a top-down, 2.5D pixel-fest with puzzles and some things covered in blood. How fun.

John Riccitiello says the big lesson from current crisis is "consumers won't pay for crap"
[h=3]Electronic Arts[/h]ea.com
Zynga's much publicized struggles of late have some investors questioning the future of the social gaming market, but Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello believes the current pessimism in the market is a bit much. According to an AllThingsD report, Riccitiello used his keynote address at the App Conference today to say the social gaming market is not dying, but it is changing.
"The companies that are now suffering will have another day," Riccitiello said, adding that the future of the social market will be built on great games. He namechecked Backflip Studios' Dragonvale and EA's own The Simpsons Tapped Out as examples of quality games, and said the biggest lesson to come from the sector's current struggles is, "consumers won't pay for crap."
According to AppData, Electronic Arts has just one Facebook app in the social network's top 50 app rankings. That app is The Sims Social, ranked 35th with 10.7 million monthly active users. Zynga's The Ville, the game EA alleges is a copyright-infringing clone of The Sims Social, is ranked 20th, with 18.7 million MAUs.

Microsoft's Surface for Windows RT appears to be flying off the virtual shelves, however it seems some of the customers who've pre-ordered will be waiting about a week longer than they thought. We've received several tips from readers in Canada and the UK indicating they've received emails (as seen above, check after the break for similar reports from Twitter) explaining that their tablets will be shipping on November 2nd, instead of October 26th as originally scheduled when they put their requests in days ago. There's no reason currently listed for the delay, however we have contacted Microsoft for further comment on the situation. Currently the Surface is listed as completely sold out on the UK and Canada Microsoft Store sites, and in the US all three variants are no longer promised for delivery on release date. It's been reported that Microsoft is building up to five million of the devices for launch this fall, hopefully they can all find their way to good homes sooner rather than later.
Update: A Microsoft spokesperson has responded, informing us that the emails sent out were incorrect, so "all customers should expect their devices by the original date given." It will be following up with customers to let them know their shipping date has not changed, and you can read the full statement for yourself after the break.

The Surface currently available for pre-order runs Windows RT, a version of the operating system designed to run on ARM architecture. Windows RT looks virtually identical to Windows 8, which, like previous versions of Windows, runs on the x86 architecture that dominates the laptop and desktop market. Microsoft's early marketing materials aren't exactly highlighting that differences between Windows RT and Windows 8 — and as a result, there's a high potential for unsuspecting consumers to end up burned when they buy a Windows RT tablet expecting the complete Windows experience. But Windows RT won't support legacy Windows applications — instead, users will need to hope and pray that developers port those applications to the Windows Store, the only venue for RT-supported apps. Over at The Verge, the intrepid Sean Hollister asked eight Microsoft Store representatives about the differences between Windows 8 and Windows RT, and received several confusing responses. 'To their credit, half of the representatives admitted that Windows RT wasn't as capable as Windows 8,' he wrote. 'The other half not so much. Moreover, those reps who did admit issues seemed dismissive of Windows RT as a whole.'

Eugene Kaspersky, the $800-million Russian cybersecurity tycoon, is, by his own account, out to 'save the world' with an exploit-proof operating system. Given the recent declarations from U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and others that the nation is facing a 'digital Pearl Harbor' or 'digital 9/11' from hostile nation states like Iran, this sounds like the impossible dream come true — the cyber version of a Star Wars force field. But on this side of that world in need of saving, the enthusiasm is somewhat tempered. One big worry: source. 'The real question is, do you trust the people who built your system? The answer had better be yes,' said Gary McGraw, CTO of Cigital. Kaspersky's products are among the top ranked worldwide, are used by an estimated 300 million people and are embraced by U.S. companies like Microsoft, Cisco and Juniper Networks. But while he considers himself at some level a citizen of the world, he has close ties to Russian intelligence and Vladimir Putin. Part of his education and training was sponsored by the KGB, he is a past Soviet intelligence officer (some suspect he has not completely retired from that role) and he is said have a 'deep and ongoing relationship with Russia's Federal Security Service, or FSB,' the successor to the KGB and the agency that operates the Russian government's electronic surveillance network.

It's a darned shame, but the writing is on the wall for AMD. The ATI graphics business is the only thing keeping it afloat right now as sales shrivel up and the company faces yet another round of staffing cuts. You can only cut so many times before there's no one left to innovate you out of the mess you're in.Qualcomm, on the other hand, dominates this space, and it has the chips to back it up. The Snapdragon line of ARM-based processors alone is found in a ridiculous number of prominent devices, including Samsung Galaxy S II and S III, Nokia Lumia 900 and 920, Asus Transformer Pad Infinity and the Samsung Galaxy Note. Mind you, Samsung is also in the ARM processor business, yet it is licensing Qualcomm's parts. That's quite a statement.

Social game analyst Playnomics has conducted a study which looks at the issue of player churn in social games, the name given to the problem of retaining players for any length of time. The firm looked at US player acquisitions by companies using its PlayRM platform from July to September this year, and found that 85 per cent of the millions counted left after just 24 hours.
