Well, this has got us scratching our collective heads. Yesterday, Google was fairly certain that its latest and greatest Chromebook would be a WiFi-only affair. Today, however, and a listing has appeared on the company's official website and Amazon that shows a 3G-enabled version is available for $329.99. Neither site mentions network options, so presumably you get the same 100MB a month for two years Verizon data that its brethren receive -- and given that we described it as being "80 percent of the MacBook Air experience for a quarter of the price," the 3G version seems well worth the extra $80.

In addition to its gender-obsessed Floral Kiss range, Fujitsu has announced a gabble of Windows 8 form factors for its Japanese clientele. One of the more curious additions is the Esprimo FH98/JD all-in-one PC, which lets you pan across Microsoft's new UI using the very same eye-tracking technology we played with at CEATEC. There's also a slightly refreshed version of the 14-inch FMV Lifebook UH75 last seen running Windows 7 at CeBIT, which persists in its claim to be the "world's thinnest Ultrabook" at 15.6mm. Two more Lifebooks make similar promises in their respective non-Ultrabook weight categories -- the 13.3-inch SH76/J and the 15.6-inch AH78/JA, which both stretch to around 20mm at their thickest points. At the back of the convoy comes the 10-inch waterproof Arrows Tab Wi-Fi, which was already draped in Windows 8 colors when we went hands-on a few weeks back. It's mostly academic unless you'll be in Japan after October 26th, but the source link has plenty more pics and specs.

Don't think that Lenovo is keeping the IdeaPad Yoga's bendy secrets all to itself: its Japanese partnerNEC is bringing a variant of the ARM-based Yoga 11 to the land of the rising sun as the LaVie Y. The 11.6-inch blend of laptop and tablet keeps the signature 360-degree display, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage as its more internationally-minded counterpart, and confirms that there's a quad-core Tegra 3powering either of the Windows RT systems. What differences exist will stem from the software: there's hints of a custom NEC app on an otherwise vanilla interpretation of Microsoft's platform. The LaVie Y should precede its IdeaPad sibling by days, arriving in stores around November 22nd, although any local buyers will pay dearly for the privilege with an estimated $1,136 price. We'd suggest that patience ought to be a virtue for everyone else.

Razer has been big on Star Wars gaming gear, but never quite like this. Enter a free contest and there's a chance to win a completely unique Star Wars: The Old Republic version of Razer's Blade gaming laptop. The winner sees the system's normally black shell replaced with a matte, laser-etched aluminum gray and the green backlighting dropped in favor of a subtler yellow matched to the MMORPG logo. Anyone who brings out this portable at a bring-your-own-computer gaming party is inevitably going to be the center of attention, although we have a feeling some would almost prefer the second-place bundle of peripherals -- at an estimated worth of $15,000, the Star Wars Blade might be too precious to carry for all but the most well-heeled of fans.

It's Microsoft's turn at quiet-before-the-storm quarterly results, and that's evident in the fiscal first quarter earnings it just dropped on our laps. The Redmond team is reporting $16.01 billion in revenue, but a more modest than usual $5.31 billion in profit over the summer -- while it's healthier than the Q4 loss stemming from the aQuantive write-off, it's not as impressive as the $7.2 billion profit from a year ago. While a tough PC market is partly to blame, it's equally hard to say that Microsoft couldn't have done better. There's a real chance that some of its customers have been holding back on purchases in anticipation of the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 launches; it's already setting aside $1.36 billion in revenue for Windows and Office upgrades. The company is unquestionably preparing itself for a giant spike in demand once at least Windows 8 rolls around later this month, so we'd say that the real litmus test will be the results we get after the holidays.

Google is whipping the proverbial curtain back from its new Chromebook, which will retail for $249 and up. The Samsung-built device weighs 2.5 pounds and features an 11.6-inch screen (with 1366 x 768 resolution), backed by a 1.75GHz Samsung Exynos 5 Dual Processor. Google claims it will boot up in under 10 seconds and, depending on usage, last for 6.5 hours on one battery charge. From a product perspective, Chrome OS and its associated hardware found itself fighting a two-front battle: the first against Windows PCs and Macs, both of which could claim more robust hardware for a similar cost to the old Chromebooks (which started at $449), and the second against tablets, which offered the same degree of flexibility and connectivity for a cheaper sticker-price. By setting the cost of the new Chromebook at $249, Google continues that pricing skirmish on more favorable terms."CNET got a bit of hands-on time with the new kid, and gives it a lukewarm but positive reception.

Microsoft’s base version of its Windows 8 tablet has already sold out after just one day of pre-orders.
Yesterday PCR reported that Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet with 32GB of storage was available for pre-order, costing £399. This version has now sold out.
Microsoft did state that pre-order inventory would be limited, but did not specify a number.
At the time of writing, the Windows 8 RT 32GB version with Touch Cover, costing £479, is still available for pre-order. As is the £559 version, which has 64GB of storage.
Microsoft’s Surface tablet launches at midnight on October 26th, but the initial shipping time for pre-orders has slipped from this date, to ‘within three weeks’ of its release. Meaning those who pre-order today may not receive their Surface tablet until November.
Those wanting to pre-order the remaining tablets can do so over at www.microsoft.com/surface.

Acer has announced Iconia W700P and W510P tablets, aimed at the professional market.
Designed as a companion for ‘busy professionals on the move’, the Acer Iconia W700P features an 11.6-inch full HD display and a custom made cradle that lets users lock it in landscape or portrait position.
Running on a 3rd gen Intel Core processor, the W700P comes with a stylus designed for writing and digital imaging as well as an Acer Crystal Eye webcam.
“When it comes to taking notes during a meeting, many still prefer writing instead of typing. Bundled with the Iconia W700P is a simple but very stylish stylus pen, just perfect for drawing or taking notes with ease,” said Acer.
Thanks to the ‘Acer Green Instant On’ feature, the Iconia W700P boots in six seconds, resumes from sleep in 1.5 seconds, and lasts 80 days in deep sleep mode.
The W510P is a lighter, smaller version of the W700P. It has a 10-inch screen, runs on a dual-core Intel Atom chip and comes with 64GB of storage.
With the included docking keyboard, the W510P can turn from tablet into fully functional notebook.
“This 10” tablet features Windows 8 Pro, so that it can easily integrate with the existing IT infrastructure, providing top manageability, enhanced usability and advanced security,” explained Acer.
Acer has not released any details about prices or release dates yet.

The guys over at Lavalit have released a new version of the beats of rage clone for the Dreamcast, Dingoo, PSP, Linux, Windows, GP2x, Nintendo Wii and Wiz.
OpenBOR is a continuation of the Beats Of Rage 2D game engine, which was originally
created by the wonderful folks over at http://www.senileteam.com.
In 2004, Senile Team released Beats of Rage, a free beat-'em-up for DOS inspired
by SEGA's Streets of Rage series and using sprites from SNK Playmore's King of
Fighters series. The game spread only by word of mouth, but it nonetheless
amassed popularity very quickly. Senile Team soon released an edit pack allowing
anyone interested to create a mod for the BOR engine.
In 2005, Kirby2000 asked Senile Team to open the source code to BOR. They
agreed, and OpenBOR was born. Development on the engine was continued by the
community, and still is to this day.

It appears that Rare is working on new projects for mobile and tablet devices running on Microsoft's new Windows 8 platform.
Microsoft has posted a couple of job listings for positions on a "Windows 8 development team" at Rare (via Kotaku).According to the listings, Rare is in need of a2D UI artist "to create amazing art for Windows 8 Mobile and Tablet devices".
A separate listing for a lead game designer is a little less candid, but does specify the position is on Rare's "Windows 8 development team", and asks that the candidate have "experience of working from end-to-end [in] a mobile gaming /interactive entertainment business".
Elsewhere, the listings say, "Rare is continuing to evolve and push the boundaries of innovation in entertainment with some amazing new projects."
Nothing official has been announced, but it certain seems that Rare is ready to tackle mobile. N64 remakes, anyone?

For all of Microsoft's talk of Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8, we've heard precious little about the Windows 7 version beyond the certainty that it was coming. Eventually. Someday. The company is partly putting that anxiety to bed with word that IE 10 should be available for the Metrophobic in mid-November, but only in a preview version -- a possible sign that Microsoft's Windows 8 RTM deadline prevented the concurrent platform releases we've grown accustomed to in recent years. The team in Redmond is hinging its launch of a finished Windows 7 build on the feedback it gets, so we'd suggest that those willing to experiment with a new browser (but not a new OS) still give IE 10 a shot next month.

It's not all bad news for Zynga. Despite litigation, slumping user engagement, an executive exodus, and a struggling stock price, the company still knows how to launch a hit Facebook game. FarmVille 2 debuted in early September, and according to AppData, has become the biggest app on Facebook, with 48.9 million monthly active users.
The 11.4 million new MAUs FarmVille 2 has added in the last week helped push it past another Zynga hit, Texas HoldEm Poker. The casual card game is currently second on AppData's charts with 38.1 million MAUs.
The success of the sequel hasn't suddenly made fields in the original FarmVille fallow, as that game still boasts 18.8 million MAUs, just enough to crack AppData's top 20. At its height, the original FarmVille had more than 80 million MAUs tending virtual crops.

The quest is complete; the spoils won. Obsidian Entertainment’s Kickstarter fund for Project Eternity closed at $3,986,929 on Tuesday, but with Paypal contributions the figure surpassed the studio’s final stretch goal target of $4 million. The isometric party-based RPG, a nostalgic tribute to titles like Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale, will now be receiving an extra layer of audio visual flourish.

Human Head claims open world sequel is in ‘limbo’, but its status is unknown
The development of Prey 2 is stuck in limbo, according to a Human Head’s lead level designer Nathan Cheever.
Cheever tweeted that the upcoming first-person shooter has not been cancelled, but its fate is still to be determined.
Cheever’s comments follow actions from publisher Bethesda in April, when it confirmed the game was not cancelled, but would not ship in 2012 due to quality issues.
Human Head’s Prey 2 was first unveiled in March 2011.
The developer, based in Madison, Wisconsin, aimed to explore new areas of the Prey universe, focusing their efforts on the single-player campaign about a new alien abductee protagonist.
