No one can accuse Maingear of skipping the latest hardware cycles -- less than a month after offering PCs with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 and 660 graphics, the PC system builder has announced that you can get all its desktop machines with GTX 650 Ti graphics now, too. As it happens, NVIDIA has just launched that very product -- a friskier version of the GTX 650 with extra Cuda cores -- keeping Maingear in lockstep with its graphics board suppliers again. That card will fill the gap between the $229 GeForce GTX 660 and $109 GTX 650 cards and run $149 (estimated), while Maingear has said it will feature special F131 and Potenza GTX 650 Ti systems at $150 off, along with a free copy of Assassin Creed III. So, if you need all the fps you can get, but can't quite pony up for the more desirable GTX 660, check the PR for more details.

Today Mozilla released the final version of Firefox 16, which includes a number of new tools for developers. "A number of HTML5 code has been 'unprefixed,' which means that Mozilla has decided it has matured enough to run in the browser without causing instability. The newly unshackled HTML5 includes CSS3 Animations, Transforms, Transitions, Image Values, Values and Units, and IndexedDB. Two Web APIs that Mozilla helped to create, Battery API and Vibration API, are also now unprefixed. These changes help keep Firefox competitive, but it also sends a signal to developers that Mozilla thinks these are good enough to begin baking into their sites. It's a strong endorsement of the 'future-Web' tech." Here's the complete change list and the download page.

concealment points out a rebuttal from PCWorld of the increasingly commonclaims that we live in a post-PC world."It's an intriguing proposition, but don't count on mobile devices killing off your desktop PC any time soon. While mobile gear is certainly convenient when you're trying to conduct business on the go, it's nowhere near as convenient as a desktop when you're trying to complete serious work in an office environment. Sure, your phone, tablet or even laptop might conveniently fit in your pocket or backpack, but all these devices are fraught with compromises, whether it's computing power, screen size, or, well, a really expensive price tag."

Microsoft has revealed its next wave of motion control technology with Digits: a bracelet device that takes gesture input from a human hand and renders it in real time 3D.
Microsoft has already gained a strong foothold in motion control technology with the Kinect, and with the Digits bracelet it adds fine motor control -where the kinect has serious trouble- to its arsenal.
Developers working with the device will have a new frontier of interface options available to them like gesture-based controls in games, sign-based typing, and even turning the pages on an e-reader as if they were three dimensional objects.
To enhance the user's immersion and sense of control, the device also renders the hand in real-time 3D.
Digits can even keep track of all this while the user is moving around- an obstacle many rival systems have failed to overcome.

Microsoft had hinted that there were big things in store for its update to the Kinect for Windows SDK on October 8th. It wasn't bluffing; developers can now tap a much wider range of input than the usual frantic arm-waving. Gadgets that move the Kinect itself can use the accelerometer to register every tilt and jolt, while low-light fans can access the raw infrared sensor stream. The Redmond crew will even even let coders go beyond the usual boundaries, giving them access to depth information beyond 13 feet, fine-tuning the camera settings and tracking skeletal data from multiple sensors inside of one app. Just where we use the SDK has been expanded as well -- in addition to promised Chinese support, Kinect input is an option for Windows 8 desktop apps. Programmers who find regular hand control just too limiting can hit the source for the download link and check Microsoft's blog for grittier detail.

The Nexus Network will be the place to get mods for Obsidian's KickStarter game
[h=3]Obsidian Entertainment[/h]obsidianent.com
In one of its seventeen project updates for the KickStarter-funded Project Eternity, developer Obsidian Entertainment has promised full mod support for the title. Obsidian has teamed up with the Nexus Networkas the official site for Project Eternity mods once the game launches.
"Our plan is to release our file-format information and expose as much of the data in the game as possible for you to extend and edit. We traditionally do not "hard-code" numbers so that our designers, and you, have the power to easily change and iterate on RPG data. We also plan on releasing localization tools to let communities around the world create localized versions for languages we are not translating Project Eternity into," wrote Obsidian senior programmer Tim Cain and project director Adam Brennecke in the update.
"As we get more familiar with Unity during production, we will be extending Project Eternity even more for mod makers. Look forward to announcements in the months ahead as we make further progress and can provide you with more information about tools and mod support."
The Project Eternity KickStarter has reached $2.4 million - more than twice its original $1.1 million goal - with 8 days left in the funding drive.

Over the weekend, major cities in World Of Warcraft became the scenes of large-scale massacres as hackers using level 1 characters took advantage of in-game exploits to slaughter other players. Stormwind and Orgrimmar were hit hardest, their entire populations wiped out, while many other cities also came under attack.

The Start Button, which has offered Windows users quick access to important programs, folders, and configuration options since 1995 and has looked more or less the same for all that time, has been re-engineered beyond recognition for Windows 8, replaced by a Start Screen of colorful Metro tiles that greets the user upon startup. One big problem: once you enter Desktop mode to access non-Metro apps, you lose easy access to all the stuff you expect from the Start Button. This has given rise to something of a cottage industry for Start Button replacements, with multiple replacement utilities available even before Windows 8 officially arrives

Credit card payments usurp virtual currency as default transaction method
Microsoft could be phasing out its Points payment system on Windows 8 and Xbox Live.
As reported by The Verge, Microsoft has made real currency the default method of paying for music downloads and movie rentals on Windows 8, meaning the use of Microsoft Points is no longer compulsory.
Although during previous Windows 8 betas the operating system had used Microsoft Points, in the latest version they have been usurped by credit card payments.
Microsoft Points are still usable, although the fact they are now taking the backseat could suggest the computing giant is gradually phasing out the system in favour of a more user-friendly method.
Develop has contacted Microsoft for clarification on the issue.

Today’s children are growing up with tablets, smartphones and laptops all around them, many learning to type before they can write. If they’re not your target market now, they will be one day soon and the chances are that they’ll already be familiar with a number of brands and devices.
As the industry moves towards more intuitive controls, including touch and voice control, it physically becomes easier for children to use gadgets at an earlier age.
Tablets in particular, which combine large screens with touch controls, appear to be popular with the under-tens (as well as the over-tens, over-18s, 30-somethings and over-60s...).
Research from toy brand LeapFrog conducted earlier this year showed that UK children aged ten and under spend almost an hour (58 minutes) a day using technology-based products at home.
The survey of 2,000 parents also revealed that almost two thirds (63 per cent) of children now own a camera, gaming or mobile device, with six per cent of those owning a personal tablet such as an iPad. Seventy per cent of children regularly play with their parents’ laptop or computer and more than a sixth (16 per cent) own their own computer.
MY TABLET!
Children see their parents interacting with technology every day, and so in the same way that a young child might want to push a pram like mum and dad, they often want to use their parents’ gadgets too. None of this has escaped the toy manufacturers, and there are a number of child-focused gadgets available, such as LeapFrog’s LeapPad2, VTech’s InnoTab 2 and InspirationWorks’ Kurio.
They claim a number of benefits over mainstream tablets – they are built to withstand falls and come with child-specific apps. They’re generally cheaper than a high-end tablet or laptop and some have featured in the Christmas bestseller lists.
They also claim to be safer – either not allowing or only permitting limited access to the internet.
SAFETY FIRST
The LeapFrog research into children’s gadget behaviour revealed that over a third (38 per cent) of parents worry that gadgets – from tablets to Kindles – are not age appropriate and that their children will access inappropriate content.
It’s true that merely browsing YouTube for nursery rhymes can quickly (and often surprisingly), lead to linked videos that are not nearly so child friendly. Older children might easily end up in corners of the internet that they shouldn’t venture into.
But there are ways to protect children. First and foremost has to be simply through parental monitoring. Robert Dekker, senior marketing manager EMEA and Australasia at LeapFrog, comments: “Online safety is still a common concern and so it’s really important to ensure that any screen time is monitored closely.”
It’s also possible to use devices such as Cyberoam’s NetGenie to set up parental controls at the router level, so you can protect children from web content without having to install anything on the devices themselves. Cyberoam’s Pranav Parikh says: “It provides them with a safe and secured experience.”
LEARNING TO SHARE
Child-specific gadgets don’t appeal to everyone. Many families prefer to share devices like the iPad, or opt for low-cost Android devices to share among a few children – either way it should be good news if you sell tablets and other mobile products.
HMV’s marketing director Mark Hodgkinson agrees: “We don’t stock anything specifically targeted at kids, but we do see that alongside iPads, there’s a big opportunity in areas like lower-end tablets.
“Increasingly in the family environment, there’s more competition for portable entertainment devices and trying to share them around means that there is a growing market those slightly lower priced devices that are for the family as much as anything.”
So what’s next for gadget-obsessed kids? Katie Roberts, UK marketing manager for InspirationWorks says the sky’s the limit. “Parents are becoming much more comfortable with their children owning technology products, so wherever the adult market goes, the child equivalent won’t be far behind.”
We also canvassed a number of parents to find out what technology is being used in their day-to-day lives. Click through to Child's play: A look at the tech kids really use to read their thoughts.

If you thought that Bad Piggies meant Rovio had moved on from Angry Birds, then you were dead wrong.
On November 8th, the Finnish company will unleash the latest installment of its world-conquering franchise.
No specific details about the game are available, but it's likely that Angry Birds Star Wars will take elements from the first Angry Birds games and mash them with Angry Birds Space.
What is known, is that the birds will look like Jedi characters from Star Wars, while the pigs will take on the look and characteristics of Sith and Imperial forces.
If the final stage of the game doesn't involve a Death Star lookalike, then I will dress as a bird for a week.
And there has to be a new character called the Millenium Falcon - this stuff writes itself. You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? … It’s the bird that made the kestrel run in less than 12 parsecs.
This is Red 5, I’m going in.

A new stable version of the Doom, Heretic and Hexen source port Doomsday Engine has been released.
You can find some shareware versions of Doom and other ID games at Q-Marines DOOM WADs Dat project page.
Quote:
Overview
In 1.9.9 we are starting to see the benefits of migrating Doomsday to the Qt platform: we have been able to incorporate complicated new features in a relatively short time and still have had time to address a long list of bugs and other issues.
Highlights
- Built-in automatic updater: Doomsday will check for and download updates from SourceForge. It is now much more convenient to stay up to date, particularly when using the frequently updated unstable builds.
- Faster map loading thanks to optimizations in the BSP builder.
- Improved music support for OS X 10.6+ and Linux: SF2 soundfonts can be used with the original games´ MIDI music.
- OS X Gatekeeper compatibility.
- Many bugs fixed
Completed roadmap items
- Remove special event handlers: use bindings subsystem for all event processing
- Qt for command line arguments: fixes broken parsing on Unix
- Automatic updates: stage 1 completed, PGP signatures available
- JPEG support and removed libpng as direct dependency
- Support Hexen 1.0: game mode "hexen-v10", 4 player colors, intermissions
- Refactor engine into a shared library: started work on the proposal by adding libdeng1, relocating Smoother, Str, StringPool, Writer, Reader, garbage, concurrency, memory zone
- FluidSynth for MIDI playback: SF2 support when using FMOD (Mac/Linux only)
Upgrading
If you are upgrading from a previous version of Doomsday, please note the following:- To conform with the standard behavior of command line applications, relative paths on the command line are now relative to the working directory at startup. Previously they were interpreted relative to the -userdir. If you launch Doomsday from the command line or have set up your own scripts for this purpose, you may need to update the paths to reflect this change.
Bug tracker
Other issues
The following issues are known but have no bug report presently:
- Windows XP: fatal error starting in windowed mode (last line in doomsday.out is “Initializing Fonts collection...”)
- Windows XP: main window does not open as the topmost window (taskbar appears over it)
- Windows: closing a text-only console window (dedicated mode) using the close button results in instant exit

The folks behind Angry Birds and Star Wars license holders have apparently been talking: Rovio has tweeted an image of what appears to be a rotund Angry Bird in classic Star Wars robes, saying "Who could this be?"
Additionally, an unknown official tumblr has surfaced with an animated version of the image that literally sheds a bit more light on the bird, but unfortunately not on the situation. We've reached out to Rovio for more information, but for now just sit back and think about the first time you ever saw The Empire Strikes Back. Remember all the weird space birds attacking the Millennium Falcon inside the worm's stomach? Yeah.
Update: Rovio has tweeted a link directly to the Angry Birds tumblr mentioned, confirming its legitimacy. We've replaced this article's original header image with the animated version for maximum lightsaber-ness.
