AMD has just released some preliminary information regarding the company's upcoming Radeon HD 8000M series of mobile GPUs. Based on the naming convention alone, it may obvious that the Radeon HD 8000M series is AMD's second generation of products featuring the GCN (Graphics Core Next) architecture, which debuted in the Radeon HD 7000 series. Like its predecessors, the Radeon HD 8000M series targets gamers with full DirectX 11.1 support and improved gaming performance over the previous-gen, but the architecture also lends itself to GPU compute applications as well. The Radeon HD 8500M sports 384 Stream Processors with an Engine Clock up to 650MHz. Memory clocks will vary based on the use of GDDR3 or GDDR5 memory. The Radeon HD 8600M is essentially the same, but with a slightly higher Engine Clock up to 775MHz. The Radeon HD 8700M is also based on the same GPU, but will be clocked at up to 850MHz, for a further increase in performance over the 8600M. The Radeon HD 8800M series, however, is based on a larger, more powerful chip and will sport 640 Stream Processors with an engine clock of up to 700MHz. GDDR5 memory will be used exclusively with 8800M, at speeds up to 1125MHz. It will be interesting to see how these new GPUs stack up versus NVIDIA's latest GeForce 600M series of mobile chips

SOE president criticises social game developer for creating 'monetisation products - not games'
Zynga has done a terrible disservice to the free-to-play sector through how it has monetised its games, claims the president of Sony Online Entertainment.
Speaking to PC Gamer, John Smedley said he felt free-to-play had a bad reputation in the West because of the way many social games tried to take money from their users.
He claimed that many titles developed by Zynga were “monetisation products and “not games”.
Smedley added that many consumers had also not given many free-to-play games a chance and readily dismissed them as poor titles.
“Much of the free-to-play model is coming over from Asia – and there were actually a stack of really good games that came over – but people just sort of dismissed them as just crappy,” he said.

Sometimes a deal can seem too good to be true. But at the time of writing this offer is very much real.
GameStop is currently selling digital PC versions of not only Far Cry and Far Cry 2: Fortune’s Edition but also the brand spanking new Far Cry 3: Deluxe Edition for £4.94.
Note to UK buyers – paying through PayPal seems to lock away some of the Far Cry 3 content. But paying with a credit or debit card seems to work fine.
Buyers will also have to download a GameStop PC app through which the games can then be downloaded – as is being done by at least one of the MCV team right now.
Far Cry 3 was only released last month and cost £39.99 on PC from GAME on launch day. Don’t expect this deal to be replicated anywhere else!

Our exclusive reveal of Dark Souls II takes pride of place on the cover of issue 249 of Edge, available to buy from UK newsagents December 20. In our ten-page lead feature, we report on FromSoftware’s ambitious intentions to broaden the audience of a series infamous for its inaccessibility, the reasons why Demon’s and Dark director Hidetaka Miyazaki is loosening his grip on the Souls reins this time around, and the substantial leap in visual fidelity has propelled the series into the same graphical arena as Watchdogs and Star Wars 1313.

Microsofts user data shows that users are getting used to dealing with Windows 8 user interface from this article on MIT technology review. Despite some of the more scathing reviews of Windows 8, ordinary users are getting along with it just fine, according to Julie Larson-Green, the Microsoft executive who leads Windows product development. Data collected automatically from some Windows users, she says, show they are adjusting to some of the new operating system's controversial features without problems 'So far we're seeing very encouraging things,' Larson-Green says of the large volume of data that Microsoft receives every day from people using Windows 8 who have chosen to join the company's 'customer experience improvement program.' All users are invited to enroll in that program when they first log into the new operating system. If they do so, anonymized information about how they are using the operating system is sent to Microsoft. Referring to complaints from some quarters, Larson-Green says: 'Even with the rumblings, we feel confident that it's a moment in time more than an actual problem.

Sega has revealed Carthage as the second playable faction in Rome 2: Total War.
Joining the Roman faction revealed earlier this month, the north African nation of Carthage is profiled on the new Total War Wiki, which will eventually feature maps showing off each faction's starting position, plus information on their varying strengths.Carthage is an expansionist trading state with a small indigenous population. As such, the bulk of its armies consist of mercenary units. The core of its land forces, however, are elite Carthaginian citizens known as the Sacred Band and mighty war elephants from the forests of North Africa. Accomplished seamen, their ships are fast and manoeuvrable, with good ramming and missile capabilities.
As a playable faction, Carthage benefits from its mastery of the waves and its heritage as a great trading nation. As a democracy, it also enjoys an improved level of population happiness. The player also has the choice to play as one of three major political powers, each of which confers further military, economic and cultural benefits.

Linux has developed a reputation for running on just about anything. If proposed changes to the 3.8 kernel take effect, we'll have to add an "almost" disclaimer. The OS' maintainers expect to drop support for Intel's i386 architecture with the new release, noting that there's "quite a bit of complexity" that could be lifted by swinging the focus to (much) newer chips. Don't expect Torvalds to have much nostalgia for i386 despite basing much of his early work on it, either, as he's bidding "good riddance" to the legacy code. We can't blame the Linux collective for wanting to drop support for 27-year-old silicon that's well out of fashion, even in embedded components; you'll just have to forgive us if we shed a tear for that retro gaming PC which finally fell off the update bandwagon.

[Bunnie Huang], creator of the Chumby and artisan of chips and electrons, is building his own completely open source laptop. It’s called the Novena, and is powered by a quad-core ARM CPU, it’s got enough bells and whistles to make any hacker happy including an on-board FPGA, dual Ethernet ports, and enough GPIO pins to do some crazy, crazy stuff.
[Bunnie]‘s laptop is an attempt to create a completely open-source laptop capable of some light code development, and web browsing. Every single chip on [Bunnie]‘s laptop has a datasheet available (without requiring an NDA, unlike the Raspberry Pi), meaning this laptop might be the beginning of a completely open source laptop.
Officially, this laptop is a one-off project made just for [Bunnie]. He’ll be spending the next few months validating all features on the board and making a proper case. [Bunnie] says a few people may be interested in their own Novena (smart one, that guy), so he might consider a Kickstarter campaign in a few months. Don’t expect it to be cheap, but if you’d like to try your hand at making your own, all the files are up on the Novena wiki.

Valve has revealed Steam's top selling products chart for the past week, which features a couple of familiar faces atop the list.
For the second week running, Far Cry 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II have finished first and second respectively. After that, it gets a bit more interesting thanks to special discounts and a new release.
The Crysis series obviously had itself a franchise sale this weekend (still going on), with the Crysis Collection reaching the third spot and Crysis 2 hitting seventh place.
Published indie (perhaps an oxymoron?) shooter Ace of Spades makes a strong first impression, debuting in fifth.
- Far Cry 3
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II
- Crysis Collection
- Street Fighter X Tekken
- Ace of Spades
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Crysis 2 Maximum Edition
- Don't Starve
- ArmA II: Combined Operations
- Borderlands 2

Are e-readers doomed? A research note earlier this week from IHS iSuppli suggested that, after years of solid growth, the e-book reader market was 'on an alarmingly precipitous decline' thanks to the rise of tablets. The firm suggested that e-reader sales had declined from 23.2 million units in 2011 to 14.9 million this year — around 36 percent, in other words. The note blames tablets: 'Single-task devices like the ebook are being replaced without remorse in the lives of consumers by their multifunction equivalents, in this case by media tablets.' Even Amazon and Barnes & Noble, the reigning champs of the e-reader marketplace, have increasingly embraced full-color tablets as the best medium for selling their digital products. Backed by enormous cloud-based libraries that offer far more than just e-books, these devices are altogether more versatile than grayscale e-readers, provided their users want to do more than just read plain text."

Crowdfunding campaign only raises £24,635 after 21 days
The Oliver Twins have admitted defeat in their Dizzy Returns Kickstarter campaign, which is currently short of its target by £325,000.
The project has only managed to garner £24,635from 776 backers, with seven days left till the crowdfunding deadline expires.
Speaking to contributors, Andrew and Philip Oliver said that for the rest of the campaign they would be publishing the rest of the concept work and designs for the game as well as discussing the future of Dizzy, and apologised for their silence over the last few days if any backers had expected a final promotional push for the title.
They added that the project should have started later in development, as many potential donators had wanted to see a demo and gameplay footage before pledging their money on a project light on details.
“The majority of video game Kickstarter projects have been in production for some time, with some having been literally years in the making, and of course this wasn't the case with Dizzy Returns,” read a statement.

Minecraft Pocket Edition sales are now over 5 million, proving the iOS and Android versions are anything but lagging behind their XBLA and PC siblings. Mojang's Johan Bernhardsson revealed the figure this morning, which now sees sales across all Minecraft games at over 17.5 million at least.
Pocket Edition is missing a lot of what's included in the XBLA and PC versions, which is of course not surprising given the platforms. Nonetheless, one of the biggest and most asked-for absentees is online multiplayer - users can play together via local Wi-Fi, but not through the Internet. According to Bernhardsson, online multiplayer is now in the works.
It won't however feature in the next update, which would be 0.5.1. That's being targeted for late January/early February and mostly features "behind the scenes" fixes and tweaks.

Microsoft hoping to reinforce developer and consumer confidence in digital marketplace
The Windows 8 Store has begun accepting games with a rating of PEGI 18.
Microsoft’s previous guidelines for the marketplace had prevented the sale of any games rated above PEGI 16 in Europe or Mature in the US.
But after sparking anger and confusion among developers and consumers, the computing giant has now made 18-rated games available through the store.
The changes mean that games such as The Witcher and Grand Theft Auto IV can now be released on the marketplace.
Windows Store director of program management Ted Dworkin said he hoped allowing mature-rated titles would reinforce developer confidence in the storefront.

China re-launch of MMO 'surpasses expectations' as number of players reaches record high
CCP’s space-faring MMO Eve Online has amassed more than 450,000 subscribers.
The landmark figure is the largest number of subscribers in the game’s ten-year history, and comes on the back of the release of the title’s 18th expansion, Eve Online: Retribution.
The title has also been re-launched in the Chinese market with partner TianCity, with sales surpassing the developer’s initial expectations.
"I can't think of a better way to kick off our celebration of our tenth anniversary than bringing a new era of Eve Online to mainland China, and I welcome them into the world of New Eden as we enter into our second decade of growth and prosperity for EVE," said CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson.
"Because of the tremendous effort of the team at CCP, we can proudly say that Eve Online has grown every year since its launch in 2003.”

After Razer easily scored the requisite 10,000 Facebook likes needed to proceed with its "Project Fiona" 10.1-inch Windows 8 gaming tablet, it asked potential players to decide for themselves how to spec it. And here's a shocker: the consensus was to go hardcore or go home. Voters said it should be similar to the prototype with at least Intel Core i5 or i7 processing zip, mid-tier discrete graphics for max pixel-pushing and weight be damned -- twice the heft and thickness of an iPad was a-ok with the group, for power's sake. Detachable controllers were also considered a must (as we thought earlier), and for all that, wannabe gamers on-the-go were willing to pay somewhere between $1,300 and $1,500. A firm ship date has yet to be announced for the device, though a variant has already made it past the FCC -- which usually bodes well for a timely arrival.
