FreeDOS — the drop-in, open source replacement for MS-DOS — was started after Microsoft announced that starting from Windows 95, DOS would play a background role at best for users. Almost two decades later, FreeDOS has survived and, as its creator explains in this interview, is still being actively developed, despite achieving its initial aim of an MS-DOS compatible OS, which quite frankly is somewhat amazing.

Microsoft has announced that 90 days into its release, sales of Windows 8 are on par with those set by its predecessor, Microsoft 7.
Tami Reller, Microsoft's chief marketing and financial officer, made the comments during an official Windows blog interview, stating: "More than 60 million licenses sold is on par with the record setting pace we saw with Windows 7."
She continued to highlight users' increasing desire for touch devices as driving demand for the operating system, and is something that Microsoft will continue to pursue following Windows 8's three-month milestone.
"Together, we've made progress and the trajectory of touch devices continues to grow… from tablets, to touch laptops, to all-in-one PCs, customer interest in new touch form factors is increasing."
Sales of the operating system were likely boosted by the discount ran by Microsoft, which offered users the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just £24.99.
However, with the deal having expired on February 1st, it will be interesting to see how sales of the OS progress with the full price tag of £189.99.
In addition to strong sales, Reller also addressed the growing demand for the Windows Store, highlighting the store hit the 100 million mark in its first 60 days – even managing to take a shot at Apple at its own app store, emphasising that app developers on Microsoft's store are able to use their own commerce and subsequently retain 100 per cent of their in-app sales profits.
As Windows 8 continues to keep up with its predecessor, Microsoft will be hoping its hardware, including its Surface tablet, will provide a boost in the number of user's running the operating system.

"You'll see a whole set of games hitting in the next two quarters in particular and throughout the year that really start to redefine what people think of Facebook games," Sean Ryan, head of game partnerships at Facebook, toldReuters. While it's best known for family-friendly social titles, Facebook plans to embrace "more core player-versus-player games" in the shooter, role playing and strategy genres.
"It doesn't mean we're walking away from other games, but there's no question our focus for 2013 much of it will be about becoming a better platform for core gamers and developers who make those games," said Ryan.
To do so Facebook says it has been investing time and resources on a number of high-quality third party games - and it plans to launch ten such products in 2013. These include u4iA's FPS Offensive Combat, Plaruim's RTS game Stormfall: Age of War, and nWay's RPG ChronoBlade.
nWay chief creative officer Dave Jones, who's credited with the creation Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings, said Facebook needs a defining game that establishes it as a legitimate platform for core games.
"Like Super Mario did for Nintendo or Halo on Microsoft, I think it just takes one title to come along, sort of as a benchmark to legitimize the whole thing," he said.

Hewlett-Packard is the latest PC manufacturer to jump into the Chromebook game, whipping the curtain back from a 14-inch device loaded with Google's Chrome OS. Powered by a dual-core Intel Celeron processor, and touting roughly 4.25 hours of battery life, the HP Pavilion Chromebook follows in the footsteps of other Chromebooks released by Acer and Samsung over the past few months. While these manufacturers continue to produce devices loaded with Windows, the growth of Chrome OS could spark some worry among Microsoft executives, who have become used to their hardware partners operating as Windows-only shops. But is Chrome OS a true threat to Windows, or just a way for manufacturers to gain some additional leverage in negotiating with Microsoft over licensing fees and other matters?

We’ve heard about HP’s Chrome OS-powered notebook for a little while now, but today the firm has officially unveiled the Pavilion 14, revealing it will be priced at $329.99.
HP’s first ever Chromebook is approximately 2-inches wider than any other currently on the market, and is powered by an Intel Celeron processor and Intel HD graphics.
Weighing in at just under four pounds, the HP Pavilion Chromebook is not only the biggest on the market, but also the heaviest. It includes a 16GB solid-sate drive, and comes with HDMI and USB 2.0 ports. There’s even an Ethernet jack – something that tends to be left off some of the latest Chrome OS devices.
"Google's Chrome OS is showing great appeal to a growing customer base," said Kevin Frost, vice president and general manager, Consumer PCs, Printing and Personal Systems, HP. "With HP's Chromebook, customers can get the best of the Google experience on a full-sized laptop, all backed up by our service and brand."
The Pavilion’s battery is removable, but some may find the stated life of 4hrs and 15mins a little underwhelming.
The HP Pavilion 14 Chromebook is available now in the US from HPDirect.com for $329.99. There is no word at the moment on a UK launch, but if and when it is released across the pond it’s likely to set you back between £210-£300.

Capcom has apologised to Street Fighter X Tekken PC players who've endured long delays for download content.
According to Capcom, "all of the remaining DLC" will be available from February 6, including the 12-character DLC pack that hit consoles in July 2012.As a consolation to PC gamers the $19.99 character pack will cost just $5 for the first two weeks of availability, after which it'll revert to its usual price.
The publisher also offered an update on the twice delayed 'Ver. 2013' update, which has missed its January launch window.
"We can confirm that development is continuing on version 1.08 (aka Ver. 2013)," said Capcom. "While we don't have a specific timeframe yet, the team is very aware that the DLC for SFxTK has taken longer than usual to be released and is working hard to try and reduce the amount of time you will have to wait."

Those of us lucky enough to work for gadget sites got to check out the Surface Pro last month. Now you can too, dear reader -- if you happen to live near a store that got one early. Although shoppers in the US and Canada can't actually purchase it until February 9th, the device is already on display at some retail locations. Sadly, there's no way for us to confirm which stores have it (short of making a few road trips), but we do know that it's going to be available at Best Buy and Staples in the US, along with Microsoft Stores. So, assuming you have one of those chains nearby, it can't hurt to wander over -- you might be rewarded with some advance hands-on time.

Football Manager 2013 is the fastest selling game in the series to date, says developer Sports Interactive - but boss Miles Jacobson has suggested the studio's not ready to rest on its laurels.
The latest instalment in the management sim, which introduced casual features via the new 'time friendly' Classic Mode, is said to have enjoyed double-digit growth worldwide compared to the previous game.According to MCV, claims that the game hasn't been pirated yet, plus growth in territories such as Turkey, also factor into FM13's growth.
"In a year where the market is down almost everywhere, we're significantly up, double digit up on a global level," said Jacobson.
"FM Handheld on iOS is also double digit up, over half a million units sold globally. Even the PSP game did better than we expected. For a studio that's in its 21st year now, to still see record sales is something we are really proud of."
Despite the strong performance and overly positive reviews, Jacobson admitted he won't be completely satisfied until the series achieves an even stronger critical reception.
"FM13 was our highest reviewed game for some time - 87 on Metacritic - but it's still not where we want to be, which is 90," he told MCV.
"There's no reason why a triple-A PC title, which we are, shouldn't be competing with a triple-A console title."

Football Manager 2013 enjoyed double-digit growth worldwide compared to the previous game.
That makes it the fastest selling game in the series to date, says developer Sports Interactive. The title was boosted by the new ‘time friendly’ Classic Mode, the fact the game hasn’t been pirated yet and growth in territories such as Turkey.
“In a year where the market is down almost everywhere, we’re significantly up, double digit up on a global level,” said studio boss Miles Jacobson.
“FM Handheld on iOS is also double digit up, over half a million units sold globally. Even the PSP game did better than we expected.
“For a studio that’s in its 21st year now, to still see record sales is something we are really proud of.”
The team is aiming for higher quality with the next game in the franchise, says Jacobson.
“FM13 was our highest reviewed game for some time – 87 on Metacritic – but it’s still not where we want to be, which is 90,” he told MCV.
“There’s no reason why a triple-A PC title, which we are, shouldn’t be competing with a triple-A console title.”

[Mal'oo] has one of those laptop computers whose screen swivels to turn it into a tablet. But the thing is a few years old and didn’t come with an orientation sensor that changes the screen between landscape and desktop, but also knows which side is up. His solution was toadd a 12-axis sensor via the mini PCI express header.
The hardware comes in two pieces. The first is a mini-PCIe card to USB interface. This is handy if you want to add a Bluetooth dongle permanently to your computer. But he’s got other things in mind for it. After hacking the BIOS (which for some reason limits what you can plug into this slot) he moved onto the second part which is a USB 12-axis sensor. This picture shows the wires before they were soldered to the USB card. [Mal'oo] couldn’t just plug it in because the sensor wouldn’t have been oriented correctly in relation to the computer. The final product is quite response, as shown in the clip after the jump.

The biggest threat facing the living room PC and Steam Box is Apple, says Gabe Newell.
The founder and head of PC gaming icon Valve spoke of his company's plans to introduce its "Steam Box" to what was once the domain of game consoles at the University of Texas' LBJ School of Public Affairs
"The threat right now is that Apple has gained a huge amount of market share, and has a relatively obvious pathway towards entering the living room with their platform," said Newell as reported by Polygon.
"I think that there's a scenario where we see sort of a dumbed down living room platform emerging — I think Apple rolls the console guys really easily. The question is can we make enough progress in the PC space to establish ourselves there, and also figure out better ways of addressing mobile before Apple takes over the living room?"
This might sound a bit paranoid, but if Apple were to put its own living room platform forward with the hardware capable of even mid-core games it would cause at least as much disruption as Nintendo's Wii did at launch

EA has announced that its Medal of Honor franchise has been taken "out of rotation" after disappointing sales.
Medal of Honor made its return to gamers' screens in 2011 after a three-year hiatus but struggled both critically and commercially.
Last year's Warfighter outing failed to fare any better and as a result the publisher has decided to drop the franchise.
Instead, EA will focus primarily on its highly-acclaimedBattlefield franchise, which will now have its development boosted in order to become an annual series, adding further fire to the rivalry between the franchise and its closest rival, Activision's Call of Duty.

Sales of Microsoft's original Surface tablet were well below the one million mark, falling short of the firm's initial expectations, says market research firm iSuppli.
After making its debut last quarter, close to 1.25 million Surface RT devices were shipped.
However, according to Rhoda Alexander, analyst at iSuppli, sales outside of the channel "were significantly lower, maybe on the order of 55 to 60 per cent of that figure."
In terms of sales, CNET has estimated that those percentages would roughly calculate to between 680,000 and 750,000 devices.
In comparison, percentages of Apple's iPad were in the region of 90 to 100 per cent as the firm sold 22.9 million devices in its most recently reported quarter.
Alexander has also predicted that Microsoft may even be forced to severely limit or halt the production of its Windows RT powered Surface tablets as it struggles to sell off current inventory.
This wouldn't be unusual however, as Amazon faced similar difficulties with its Kindle device, with excess inventory rolling over into the next quarter.
In addition to lacklustre sales, Microsoft's Surface has faced return issues too, with Alexander citing the rate of return on the device to be "very high".
The analyst believes the switch to the Windows 8 operating system has thrown many users off, pushing them to return their devices in favour of others.
It seems to be linked in a lot of cases to a steep learning curve of the Windows 8 OS – which is not necessarily intuitive," said Alexander.
Microsoft is set to launch its latest Surface devices next month – the Surface Pro – which drops the Windows RT OS and offers a full version of Windows 8, which any are predicting will receive much greater interest from the industry.

Worldwide tablet sales have greatly outpaced industry predictions as a record total 52.5 million devices were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Preliminary data released by the International Data Corporation revealed that the tablet market grew by 75.3 per cent over the same period in 2011.
Perhaps even more impressive is the market's significant growth over the previous quarter, with Q4 2012 recording a 74.3 per cent increase over the year's Q3.
However, the jump in Q4 sales was widely expected given the demand for tablet devices across the seasonal Christmas period.
Tom Mainelli, research director of tablets at IDC, highlighted the device's strong sales, whilst linking them to the steep decline in PC shipments.
"New product launches from the category's top vendors, as well as new entrant Microsoft, led to a surge in consumer interest and very robust shipments totals during the holiday season. The record-breaking quarter stands in stark contrast to the PC market, which saw shipments decline during the quarter for the first time in more than five years," said Mainelli.
Apple continues to reign supreme in the tablet arena and the firm's numbers eclipse even its closest rivals.
The firm recorded a market share of 43.6 per cent, whilst shipping 22.9 million tablet devices in Q4 2012 alone.
The numbers leave a significant margin between the market's top spots, with Samsung falling into second place with just a 15.1 per cent share of the market, unloading 7.9 million devices across the seasonal period.
However, whilst Apple continues it dominance of the market, the results didn't come without signs of concern for the firm, which saw its market share in 2012 slip from the 51.7 per cent it recorded in 2011.
Meanwhile, Samsung managed to doublet its market share in 2012 from the 7.3 per cent it achieved in 2011, whilst most impressively, managing year on year growth of 263 per cent.
Whilst Apple continues to sit pretty as king of the tablets, if Samsung continues its rate of growth, there could soon be a much close fought battle for the market's top spot.

Valve’s digital distribution service Steam is currently growing 300 per cent faster year-on-year according to newly released figures. And the service hit 6.6 million concurrent users last Sunday – compared to January 2012′s peak figure of 5 million. The 6 million mark was only hit in November last year, which is how PC Gamer calculated the eye-opening growth factor. It’s not necessarily natural growth, however, as the vast number of recently released free Dota 2 beta keys caused a spike – the game itself peaking at 237,414 concurrent users. The next highest concurrent figure belonged to Football Manager, which achieved 78.488 users. While the jump may be aided by a big release, it’s likely that we’ll see a few more spikes throughout the year as the first thirdparty Steam Boxes – like Xi3′s Piston – and Valve’s own hardware debut. Steam’s Big Picture mode, which was released to the public in December, will no doubt fuel new audiences, too – though it may take longer for that message to get out.
