The director of Final Fantasy XIV believes that the transition to free-to-play for MMOs like The Old Republic and The Secret World is unrelated to the validity of the subscription model.
Speaking to Penny Arcade, Naoki Yoshida voiced an opinion that cuts against the accepted wisdom around online business models.
"I don't think there's a right or wrong for having a monthly subscription model or free-to-play model," he said. "Games like The Old Republic and The Secret World, I don't say those games would've been more successful if they had been free-to-play, for example. The subscription model was unrelated to the success of the game."
The relaunch of Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIV - subtitled "A Realm Reborn" - enters its first closed beta today. The game initially launch in September 2010, but widespread problems caused Square Enix to drop its planned subscription model in favour of free-to-play while the issues were resolved.
Yoshida admitted that Square Enix was "too comfortable" with the Final Fantasy franchise, relying on the power of the brand to draw in the players. He also conceded a "lack of knowledge" of general standards in other MMOs, but Yoshida believes that the company has now created a product that will stand out enough to justify a monthly subscription.
However, the need for a subscription model is inextricably tied to Square Enix's need for stability. According to Yoshida, without investors to supply funding, the instability of free-to-play revenue can make it difficult for a company to operate.
"With the free-to-play model, you'll get huge income one month, but the next month it depletes," he said.
"Most MMOs have investors in the background, and the company uses the profit and splits the profit with the investors. But, if the game's not successful, and it doesn't reach the target, then they have to switch to free-to-play to try and get just a little profit from it.
"Among the MMOs in the market, only Blizzard and Square Enix are making money without investors in the background."

Skyrim and Bioshock duke it out for the top spot in the latest weekly top sellers list on Steam.
Despite pre-orders for Bioshock Infinite nipping at its heels, Skyrim's Dragonborn DLC remained at the chart's peak for another week. With Arma II getting a boost up to third, with the launch of its DayZ mod directly through Steam taking place during the middle of last week.
Pre-orders for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot has it sitting in fifth, while advanced purchases for the surprise PC version of Double Fine's Brütal Legend have the title right behind in sixth.
Aliens: Colonial Marines, which finished in the runner-up spot last week, has fallen completely off the chart.
- Skyrim – Dragonborn DLC
- Bioshock Infinite
- ArmA II: Combined Operations
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II
- Tomb Raider
- Brütal Legend
- Skyrim
- Torchlight II
- Resident Evil 6

MCV revealed last week that retailer GAME was preparing a move into game streaming – and now the first details have been released.
The chain has struck a deal with cloud computing and streaming tech specialist CiiNOW to offer customers access to “console-class titles” on a range of devices such as PCs, Mac, set-top boxes, tablets and smartphones.
Managed trials will kick off shortly with a full launch planned for the second half of the year.
“As the face of gaming changes, it’s vital that we stay at the forefront,” GAME CEO Martyn Gibbs stated. “We believe in providing our customers with access to great games in every gaming arena and these trials will help shape how we do that.
“By using CiiNOW’s scalable cloud-based gaming technology, we will be able to offer our broad customer base an instant and exciting entertainment experience.”
CiiNOW CEO and co-founder Ron Haberman added: “GAME has been the place to get great video game content in the UK, and we are excited to support their ambition to provide customers with a device-agnostic, immersive gaming experience. With the incorporation of CiiNOW’s cloud-based technology, GAME’s customers will now experience instant gaming like never before.”

Just one week after Microsoft resumed taking orders for its Surface Pro tablet, the company has announced the device has sod out again.
Microsoft's Surface Pro has suffered a shaky start, with supplies of the device drying up just hours after the device initially went on general sale in February 9th.
Despite reopening online orders last week and promising customers that their device would ship by March 1st, it would appear that supplies of the device has one again run dry.
It is interesting to note that rather than simply extend the shipping date of the date whilst allowing customers to continue purchasing the Surface Pro, Microsoft has halted all orders of the device.
Whilst the 128GB version of the Pro continues to sell out, the much-criticised 64GB edition of the tablet has continued to remain available.
Many have shared their concerns over the 64GB Surface Pro and its limited storage space, as users were left with just 30GB of useable storage once the device's operating system and other key files were installed.
Erza Gottheil, analyst with Technology Business research, blames the shortages on Microsoft's underestimation of the demand for the Surface.
"It's beginning to look like this isn't a problem with building up enough inventory for the launch, but that Microsoft underestimated demand," said Gottheil.

With a number of other countries already in line to get their hands on Mozilla's Firefox OS, it's pretty clear that the company doesn't have the States at the top of its list of priorities. While attending its press conference at MWC today, however, we just had to ask: when will we be getting a turn at the mobile operating system? CEO Gary Kovacs assured us that the US is indeed on the list (albeit a bit further down), and his company has both plans and partners lined up for what looks to be a 2014 release time frame for the low cost operating system.

WiFi-only flavors of the Chromebook Pixel have only just started shipping, but if you're already itching to install Linux on one of them, you're in luck. Not only have kernel patchesbeen submitted for the hardware, but Google's Bill Richardson has now laid out exactly how to load up the devices with Linux Mint. Richardson says that part of the Chrome OS BIOS is read-only, so changes to it are generally exclusive to new hardware. Pixel, for example, has been tuned to support user-provided custom bootloaders thanks to an unverified BIOS slot. Unfortunately, Mint doesn't support the laptop's touchscreen and trackpad because it leverages the stock kernel. Adventurous types looking to boot a Tux-powered OS on a Pixel can hit the neighboring source link for step-by-step instructions.

Google on Thursday released Chrome version 25 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. While Chrome 24 was largely a stability release, Chrome 25 is all about features, including voice recognition support via the newly added Web Speech API and the blocking of silent extension installation. You can update to the latest release now using the browser's built-in silent updater, or download it directly from google.com/chrome."But if you're more interested in the growing raft of Google-branded hardware than running Google OSes, some good news (via Liliputing) about the newly released Pixel: Bill Richardson of Google posted on Thursday that the Pixel can boot Linux Mint, and explained how users can follow his example, by taking advantage of new support for a user-provided bootloader.

After whetting our appetite at CES, Samsung's updated Series 7 Chronos is slowly squeaking its way into US retailers. Spotted at Best Buy for $1,200, this 21mm dynamo packs a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 3635QM CPU and an AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU along with a 15.6-inch touchscreen. While this lean, mean, Windows 8 machine's streamlined design and spec sheet are impressive, such adornment comes at a price. Absent from the Chronos' fine engineering is room for an optical drive, so DVD and Blu-ray enthusiasts be warned. However, should this caveat not apply to you, then by all means you have our blessings to check out Sammy's new up-and-comer.

Samsung reigned supreme in the smart connected device market last year, beating out the likes of Apple, Lenovo and HP.
In the market where Apple reigned supreme, Samsung rose to the competition in 2012 and snagged the top spot with a portion of the market greater than that of any other single company.
The smart devices market includes both desktop and laptop PCs, in addition to mobile devices such as tablet PCs and smartphones.
Market research firm IDC released the report, which revealed Samsung to have dominated the market with its devices and a 20.8 per cent market share – a sharp increase from the 12.3 per cent it achieved in 2011.
Meanwhile, Apple was left to settle with second place with its 18.2 per cent share of the market.
Interestingly, the US firm increased its market share in 2012 too, but still fell to the strong growth achieved by its South Korean rival Samsung.
Lenovo's 6.5 per cent shared placed the firm at third, whilst fellow manufacturers HP and Dell followed if fourth and fifth place respectively.
Samsung's success has been linked to the strong sales achieved by its Galaxy S3 smartphone, which trumped Apple's iPhone 5 – despite achieving record sales themselves with the flagship device.
Still, both Apple's iPad and iPad mini continue to lead the tablet PC market, with the devices topping IDC's 2012 data.

Google has unveiled the new Chromebook Pixel, which carries an 2560 x 1700 high resolution display and is the first device from the vendor to feature touch capability.
According to T3, the 12,85-inch display actually carries a higher pixel density than any other laptop – including Apple’s retina displays – and is 25 per cent brighter than the competition too.
It also carries an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 32 GB of SSD storage plus an additional terabyte of Google Cloud storage.
The device is priced at £1,049 and will be available in the UK from April 1st.

Only yesterday we were being teased with the idea of a touchscreen Chromebook. Well, good news for people who hate waiting -- it's here, it's called the Pixel, and you can pre-order today. The all-Google laptop is aimed at those who live in the cloud, but want a little more from their machine. Built from the ground up for the web, the 12.85-inch 3:2 ratio display claims to offer 18 percent more vertical space than 16:9 does. The screen the Pixel has is -- as you can imagine -- one of its proudest features, sporting a 2,560 x 1,700 resolution, giving a PPI of 239, and offers a brightness of 400nit. Oh, and of course, it's touch-enabled so whatever your input preference, you're covered. On the inside, there's a dual-core 1.8Ghz Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and two SSD options -- 32GB or 64GB. If that's not enough, Google's ahead of you, and is throwing in 1TB of Drive storage with every Pixel for three years -- what it expects the life of the machine to be. You won't be basing your choice just on storage though, as the smaller capacity model is WiFi only, while the 64GB comes with Verizon LTE baked right in, and a choice of plans.
As for the rest of the features, the Pixel also has a triple-microphone configuration -- with one under the keyboard -- which helps improve noise cancellation, including the rattle of your typing during excited hangouts. This is also where the speakers are hidden, so it will be interesting to see how those play nice together. Other features include an "HD" camera, a custom keyboard action for less finger-fatigue, and an enhanced smooth glass trackpad. As for ins and outs, there are two USB ports, a mini displayport, a mic / headphone jack and an SD card reader -- notably, no Ethernet. Wirelessly, you have WiFi a thru n and Bluetooth (plus that LTE if you opt in).Wondering what effect that display might have on the (59Wh) battery? Well Google claims its open-source test (available for criticism online) has rated the Pixel at five hours. If you want to get yourself some touchscreen Pixel action, you can order starting today from the Play store, or Best Buy starting tomorrow. The WiFi-only model will cost you $1,299, rising to $1,449 if you want some LTE (currently US / Verizon only). Not enough info for you right there? Why not head over to ourminty-fresh hands-on.
Update: The WiFi model is available now from the Google Play store and will be on Bestbuy.com starting tomorrow. You'll have to wait until April before you can order the LTE version.

Chrome OS being a web-based platform doesn't preclude the existence of power users -- see the Chromebook Pixel. Google wants to encourage them with software, too, which is why it's rolling out a new update to the stable Chrome OS code. The new version automatically positions windows to show more whenever a user hasn't customized the look, and there's now official support for extending a desktop across multiple screens. Other additions are subtler: copy protection is a bigger deal with both an HTML5 decryption module and support forEncrypted Media Extensions, and exacting users can both re-order the app launcher as well as set tap-to-drag as a preference. The refresh is pushing out over the next few days to all devices save for Samsung Chromebooks. It's not the first time a Chrome OS update has glossed over Samsung portables, but everyone else should enjoy the extra screen real estate.

Newly released data has revealed that Microsoft's Surface tablet continues to struggle, as both versions suffer low market shares.
Stats released by AdDuplex revealed that the Surface RT's market share fell from 7.6 per cent to 6.8 per cent during February alone.
Likewise, the newly released Surface Pro device has failed to generate much demand from consumers, with the ratio of RT device to Pro Surface's outshipping the device 24:1.

Screenshots of Microsoft's heavily rumoured operating system, codenamed "Blue", have begun to surface.
Whilst the leak offers little in the terms of information surrounding Microsoft's mysterious project, version numbers for Blue have emerged.
A screenshot from Russian site Microsoft Portal provides both a build number of 9319 and the version code of 6.3.
Rumours surrounding Blue continue to emerge, as speculation mounts as to whether it is simply Microsoft's first major service pack for Windows 8 – or if Blue is infact an entirely new OS in itself.
Interestingly, the version code of 6.3 would suggest the latter – if Microsoft sticks to its previously used release pattern, that is.

The remastered version of Eric Chahi's Another World has taken a tour across a variety of platforms, and now makes a stop in one more ecosystem: the Mac App Store. Publisher DotEmu has released the remake on Mac, with optional and switchable HD graphics. The more platforms the better, because everyone should play it.
DotEmu also has an update on the way for the iOS version, adding support for controllers including the iCade. The touch controls aren't bad in this version, but buttons are usually preferable.

Tablets are set to play a pivotal roll in the growth of mobile games, as gamers are expected to spend an estimated $3.03 billion on in-app purchases by 2016.
However, whilst users increasingly use the tablets to play mobile games, smartphones will continue to reign supreme as the primary device to make in-app purchases, as they are expected to generate close to $6 billion – double that of tablets.
The study released by Juniper Research emphasises the effects of mobile games on the greater video games industry, with an increasing number of users migrating from dedicated portable games devices to tablets and smartphones.
It also highlights the freeium business model common with tablet based games as driving demand for such title, with the model difficult to implement on other portable gaming devices.
Currently, gamers spend an estimated $301 million on mobile games, a figured that is set to reach ten times that by 2016.
Author of the report, Siân Rowlands, said: ‘When we consider that only a small amount of gamers actually make in-game purchases, and those that do typically only spend a few dollars, it becomes apparent that there are a small proportion of consumers spending thousands annually on these virtual currencies, who subsidise the game for everyone else.’
