Reports indicate that Nvidia is close to unveiling its latest flagship GPU unit, known as the Geforce GTX Titan.
Currently, the firm's GTX 690 card holds the title as the world's fastest graphics unit, but circulating rumours indicate that Nvidia isn't waiting for new architecture to release an update GPU.
Listings from a number of European retailers (which have all since been removed) all point towards a new flagship card, packing 2,688 shader units, a 384-bit memory bus and 6GB of dedicated RAM – all within a single chip.
In comparison, Nvidia's current flagship card, the GTX 690, requires two chips in order to offer 3,072 shader units and just 4GB of RAM.
Whilst there has yet to be any formal announcement of the card – known only as the GTX Titan – both ASUS and EVGA are rumoured to be launching theta own editions of the card as early as next week.
As for pricing, initial listings of the rumoured card indicate it could cost in excess of $1,000 – so prospective buyers can expect to pay out heavily for that boost in game performance.

iFixit has given the Surface Pro a rock-bottom score of just one out of ten for repairability, making it harder to fix than Apple’s iPad.
In a teardown, iFixit revealed that the screen was held in place by ‘a metric duckload of adhesive’ and the battery is so strongly glued in place that you will most probably need a new back cover if you ever wanted to replace it.
iFixit also uncovered more than 90 screws inside the tablet, 23 of which howd down an internal plastic bezel and 29 holding down two metal side plates.
It seems the Surface is simply not designed to be opened at home. Even the iPad, a notoriously difficult device to repair, earned a score of two out of ten.
“Unless you perform the opening procedure 100 per cent correctly, chances are you'll shear one of the four cables surrounding the display perimeter,” said iFixit.
So unless you know exactly what you’re doing, it’s probably best not to try this at home, folks.

You know the drill (or is that screwdriver?) by now. New gadget lands at the iFixit labs, and the good folk there give it a teardown. Microsoft's Surface Pro is this week's lucky slab of silicon to hit the bench. The good news is that a removable battery and SSD will make swapping those out a charm. That's pretty much it for the good news though. The less good news is the sheer number of screws you're going to have to contend with (over 90 by iFixit's count). The bad news is that screen is a real fiddle to remove, and there are globs of adhesive to navigate (holding that battery and screen in place for example). The worst part? By our tool-weilding friend's reckoning, you'll be lucky not to sever a major cable artery just by opening the thing. There's not much by way of hardware surprises, bar the mAh rating of the battery (5,676). All this earns the Surface Pro a repairability rating of just one out ten (ten being the best). Better treat yours with the love and care it deserves then.

February 13th, 2013, 22:52 Posted By: wraggster
MCV Awards nominee Sports Interactive has just released its fastest selling Football Manager yet.
We ask studio boss Miles Jacobson how the series is bucking the trend at retail…
So how has your new Football Manager performed?
In a year where the market is down pretty much everywhere, for some reason we are significantly up year-on-year, double digit up in fact. The UK has stayed around the same but a lot of countries, like Brazil, have performed well this year. That’s partly because Steam has started taking local currency in Brazil, and off the back of that we are going to do a Portuguese/Brazilian translation for FM14. We did a Turkish version of FM13, and we’ve sold three times as many units in that country than we normally do.
Why do you think you’ve bucked the trend?
Classic Mode has gone down very well. This is a new game mode that we have introduced this year, which is a quicker way of playing the game. That means people that aren’t as time rich anymore can come back to the series again. We’ve also not really been cracked this year, which has definitely helped us in some of the smaller territories. And we’ve run what we think has been a particularly successful marketing campaign. The way that things work now is that the creative side of the marketing is actually done by us here at Sports Interactive, and then Sega puts the plan together.
Football Manager Handheld has also seen double-digit growth with over half a million units sold on iOS. Even the PSP game’s performed, that went back to No.1 in the UK PSP chart last week, which is probably not that hard to do, because there’s not that many new releases, but it still performed better than we were expecting.
You told MCV last year you wanted to deter piracy for a couple of weeks, but it appears you’ve managed a couple of months.
It’s awesome. Massive thanks has to go to the people who work at Sega’s Hardlight studio, who actually came up with the system that we have used this year. There is a cracked version out there, but it crashes regularly.
You also told us you’d look to hire more people if sales were high.
Yes, we will be looking to increase the team. We are lucky to be working with Sega. Sega has been clear to us that as revenues go up we are able to expand as we need to.
And for fans that means more modes and features?
We are in the midst of designing 14 at the moment. We’ve just had five weeks of feature meetings this year, and went over more than 1,600 new features. I need to spend some time deciding which new feature goes into which games. One of the important things we want to do this year is we need to spend a lot more time polishing the game. I think anyone who works on annually iterative games has problems scheduling that side of things. Because whilst FM13 was our highest reviewed game for some time – I think Metactitic is at 87 – it’s still not where we want to be, which is at 90.

February 13th, 2013, 22:27 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft is holding back its new Surface Pro tablet, inadvertently capping its success with a glass ceiling. Why? By leaving gamers out in the cold.
The Microsoft Surface Pro isn't a gaming device. But actually, it is. Quite convincingly, too.
From the outset, Microsoft's latest tablet is marketed as the perfect business tablet for professionals.
Powered by an Intel i5 processor, the Pro includes a 128GB SSD and packs the no-holds-barred edition of Windows 8, which offers the full Office package, and can even run full applications like Adobe Photoshop.
But let's take a look at those specs again — an Intel i5 processor, SSD storage, 4GB RAM and a resolution of up to 1920x1080.
Sound familiar? That's because anyone remotely knowledgable of the innards of current-gen gaming setups will recognise these specifications as the requirements for many current triple-A PC titles.
The specs also closely mirror those of Razer's recently announced Edge tablet, which itself is promoted as "the first tablet for gamers".
Pursuing the notion that the Surface Pro is potentially a gaming device, Forbes recently put the tablet to the test with a number of the PCs most popular titles in order to see how they performed.
Diablo III? High specs at 1,920x1080 resolution.
League of Legends? High specs at 1,920x1080 resolution.
The list continues with other big name PC titles, such as Portal 2, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, StarCraft II and Civilization V.
Put into practice, the Surface Pro is a more-than-capable gaming device.
Obviously, there are drawbacks. 128GB of SSD storage is speedy, but not nearly enough to handle more than a handful of PC titles.
As beautiful as the Pro's display may be, the idea of playing some of the above titles on a touch display would be a nightmare – however, Forbes' Jason Evangelho over came this issue with a wireless mouse and the Surface's own touch keyboard.
And of course, as impressive as these titles are, they're all current gen. For such a high price tag, the Surface Pro would certainly lack the longevity of rival gaming devices or traditional PC rig, and a number of gamers could potentially be put off by the most feared words in the gaming dictionary: Integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics.
But with all of this in mind, the Surface remains a formidable gaming device. So why isn't Microsoft advertising it as such?
If the firm really wants the Surface to take off, it needs to downplay the device's comparisons to the iPad and other media-focused tablets, and emphasise its ability to play current triple-A games seamlessly.

Not unlike an ancient conqueror, GameFly has slashed and burned the price of its Civilization V PC download. Usually $30, the game can now be had for a mere $7.49. The deal expires at midnight PT on February 14, a day when you should probably pay attention to your significant other and not global diplomacy.
But wait, there's more! Using another GameFly deal, you can actually knock the price down to only six bucks. All you have to do is use the coupon code GFDFEB20, which takes an additional 20 percent off the price of PC downloads. Of course, if you're not in the mood for Civilization, you could always apply it to a different PC download, say, a pre-order of Tomb Raider. Already discounted to $45, the coupon drops it down to $36.
GameFly - Civilization 5 ($7.49), GameFly - Tomb Raider ($45)

The multiplayer servers for Halo 2 on PC will not shut down this month, as previously announced.
343 Industries' David Ellis has confirmed that support for the game's multiplayer mode has been extended to June.More interestingly, Ellis hints at possible "further support options".
"Halo 2 PC support extended through June 2013 while we investigate further support options," announced Ellis via Twitter.
343 Industries community manager Jessica Shea last month confirmed plans to shut down the Halo 2 PC multiplayer servers on February 15. According to Shea, the active player count for the game was 20 people.
Ellis offered no reasoning on the sudden change of plan.

The Real Racing series has been a staple of mobile gaming, at least in some circles. However, EA now sees the game as big enough to matter for the entire brand, full stop -- and it's willing to make Real Racing 3 a free-to-play release to snag as wide an audience as possible. When the Firemonkeys-built sequel reaches Android and iOS on February 28th, it will follow the stereotypical freemium model, where any purchases are solely to unlock content sooner, including repairs now that there's a damage element. The team suggests that free-only play won't be a grind, however, and a rare I-go-you-go multiplayer racing mode should keep many of us entertained without a cash outlay. It's doubtful that RR3 will suddenly take on the stature of a perennial blockbuster like Madden, but the switch in business models shows EA treating mobile as more than just a sideshow.

AMD has yet to make an official statement on this topic, but several unofficial remarks and leaks point in the same direction. Contrary to rumor, there won't be a new GCN 2.0 GPU out this spring to head up the Radeon HD 8000 family. This breaks with a pattern AMD has followed for nearly six years. AMD recently refreshed its mobile product lines with HD 8000M hardware, replacing some old 40nm parts with new 28nm GPUs based on GCN (Graphics Core Next). In desktop, it's a different story. AMD is already shipping 'Radeon HD 8000' cards to OEMs, but these cards are based on HD 7000 cores with new model numbers. RAM, TDP, core counts, and architectural features are all identical to the HD 7000 lineup. GPU rebadges are nothing new, but this is the first time in at least six years that AMD has rebadged the top end of a product line. Obviously any delay in a cutthroat market against Nvidia is a non-optimal situation, but consider the problem from AMD's point of view. We know AMD built the GPU inside Wii U. It's also widely rumored to have designed the CPU and GPU for the Xbox Durango and possibly both of those components for the PS4 as well. It's possible, if not likely, that the company has opted to focus on the technologies most vital to its survival over the next 12 months.

In December alone, more tablets were sold than the number of notebooks shipped in the whole of Q4 2012.
Data released by research firm GfK today has revealed that the UK tablet market grew 267 per cent in comparison to 2011.
The firm highlights the saturation of the market with budget and entry-level tablets as the main reason for the growth, with the average price point of tablets falling by 23 per cent in 2012.
This increasingly competitive pricing, matched with surging interest from consumers has seen the demand for such devices soar.
Unsurprisingly, GfK's data found that given the strong sales of tablets, an automatic demand has been created for tablet accessories.
Tablet case sales jumped to 144 per cent in 2012, with the product now representing almost 50 per cent of the laptop bags market.
Robyn Tovey, GfK Account Manager commented: "It seems likely media tablet sales will continue to grow in 2013 as the availability of lower priced devices has made buying a tablet a more viable purchase for many consumers. Likewise, tablet cases could be expected to be the key selling product of the luggage market this year."
The new data continues to highlight the dominance of tablet devices within the PC hardware market, with more consumers moving away from traditional PCs in favour of mobile devices and media tablets.

A shortage of skilled IT individuals is leaving the UK in a weak position, open to online threats and cyber attacks, says the National Audit Office.
The NAO made the claim within its latest report, warning that the lack of relevantly skilled people in the UK is leaving the country vulnerable to preventing, mitigating and recovering from cyber attacks.
Within the report, it is estimated that cyber crime is costing the UK between £18bn and £27bn per year.
In response to the figures, the NAO has urged the government to address key areas of readiness, defence and reaction – with suggested challenges including better industry protection and the need to address the UK cyber skills gap.
Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office: "The threat to cyber security is persistent and continually evolving. Business, government and the public must constantly be alert to the level of risk if they are to succeed in detecting and resisting the threat of cyber attack."
"It is good that the Government has articulated what success would look like at the end of the programme. It is crucial, in addition, that progress towards that point is in some form capable of being measured and value for money assessed."

Microsoft has said its "looking into" a solution to the ongoing connection issues that struck Games for Windows Live over the weekend.
"Some of our users are experiencing an issue connecting, in game, to games that they have previously had no issues with," said a GFWL support representative via the official forums. "We are aware of this issue and are looking into what is causing it and for a resolution."Users are reporting an inability to log into their accounts and connection issues in games - including Dark Souls and Age of Empires Online.
As a possible temporary fix, MS says, "Some users are reporting success by running the following four commands in an administrator command prompt (right click on the command prompt and select run as administrator):
- bitsadmin /reset
- ipconfig /flushdns
- netsh int ip reset
- netsh winsock reset
The firm says you should then restart your PC, then re-running the game and selecting "Sign-in with another account" to log in.
"This is not working for everyone and we are looking into a complete resolution for all of our users," adds MS.

At least some of the tablet-loving public picked up a Surface Pro this weekend. Those earliest of early adopters have discovered an unpleasant limitation, however: the vaunted pen input doesn't have complete support in important apps. Microsoft is using only an official driver without any current option to install an alternative, leaving artists without eraser or pressure support in creative industry staples such as Adobe Photoshop. While there's no immediate fix, a Microsoft spokesperson tells us that it's working with the "necessary partners" to expose full pen functionality; we've reached out to Adobe as well, and will let you know if it's one of the chosen few. In the meantime, Surface artisans who need full pen recognition may want to consider an add-on tablet as a stopgap. Read Microsoft's full statement after the break.

Mohammad Alavi is responsible for some of the most intense and memorable campaign levels in Call Of Duty history, but he almost never entered the industry at all. He was on the path to becoming a doctor, earning bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biology. On the side, he enjoyed making maps for firstperson shooters, starting with Duke Nukem 3D and continuing with Quake, Half-Life and Counter-Strike. As a part of the Internet’s then-thriving modding scene, he soon became a contributor to some of the more prominent mods of the Half-Life era, including the original Natural Selection and the ill-fated Half-Life: Nightwatch. But the idea of working on games professionally never struck him as viable. Then, just as he had sent his last applications to medical school, an issue of PC Gamer magazine changed his life. The issue contained a feature on modders and mod teams, and prominently featured were screenshots of Alavi’s maps. “I’m flipping through this magazine, and all of a sudden I see all my levels,” he recalls. “I never took it as a serious career path; I didn’t think I was good enough. Once I saw that, though, I guess it gave me confidence.”On the next page, Alavi saw an advertisement for Florida’s Full Sail University. “I got my acceptance to medical school, but I lied to my parents – I told them I didn’t get in. I was like, ‘Well, I didn’t get into medical school, so here’s a backup plan!’” he laughs. “They were pretty pissed for a while there.”After graduating from Full Sail with a degree in game design, Alavi moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of finding employment. He ended up getting hired by Infinity Ward just after the studio had completed Call Of Duty. “It was the combination of the programming I’d learned in school and all the stuff I’d done on those Half-Life mods that got me the job,” he explains.

Studio investigating potential for business model on consoles
Crytek is aiming to move into the triple-A free-to-play market completely within the next two-to-five years, the studio’s CEO has said.
Speaking to Venturebeat, Yerli said he expected free-to-play to rival the quality of triple-A retail titles in the Western market within the next two or three years.
Crytek has already dipped into the F2P space with online shooter Warface, which is currently in closed beta, and Yerli said the success of the title already has left the studio in no doubt about its plans to abandon premium priced retail games in future.
"We decided five or six years ago that we want to marry the quality of triple-A games with the business model of free-to-play,” said Yerli.
“And out of that position, Gface and Warface were born. And at that time, we decided some other games, in some of our other studios, would head in this direction.

Illegal file-sharing 'inevitable', so small developers should embrace it, says Sean Hogan
An indie developer has chosen to advocate piracy by offering free codes and posting on a torrent site in support of illegal file-sharing.
In a post on Reddit, Sean Hogan said that piracy was inevtaible and that it was better to embrace it, and asked anyone one who downloaded the action-adventure RPG Anodyne to upvote it on Steam Greenlight.
He added that piracy was a way to give people who couldn’t afford the game a chance to play it, and that it was better for indie developers to have more people play their games than less – no matter how they obtained it.
“Piracy is inevitable so it's better to embrace it - plus, it gives lots of people who couldn't normally afford the game the opportunity to play it - and I think when you're a small group of developers (only my friend Jon and I made Anodyne), it's better to have lots of people able to experience your game,” said Hogan.
“We hope enough people will like it and the word will get out, eventually allowing us to get onto Steam, which then lets more people see and play Anodyne.”
