In a world gone mad...a Chinese high school student in Fort Bend Texas is arrested and then forced to attend an alternative education center when parents discover he has created a Counterstrike level based off of Clements High School for he and his friends to play on. The student had his home searched for weapons, was detained until it was determined no charges could be filed, and is now unable to graduate with his peers, all because of his mapmaking skills.
Oh wait, it was completely founded. He had swords. Thank god we stopped him before he went medieval.
I can understand folks being a bit jumpy in the wake of the Virginia Tech incident, but whatever happened to just...I dunno, talking to the guy? Asking him what his intentions were. Seeing if maybe he'd take it down? There are better ways to safeguard ourselves then having police ransack a teenagers bedroom. What a complete nightmare.
Now the Chinese community of Fort Bend is rallying support for the unjustly punished young man, trying to get him reinstated in class, or at the very least trying to get the school board to admit they might have gone too far. As one community member says, "We should teach our children not to judge others harshly." What exactly are we teaching or children these days?
Twenty-two years ago a teacher caught me drawing him with an arrow through his head and made me stand next to his desk holding the picture for a half hour while my fellow students made faces at me. How far we've come.

NCsoft has revealed that a closed beta test for Tabula Rasa is under way.
It marks the game's final development stages ahead of its expected launch on PC this autumn.
Tabula Rasa is in development at Destination Games, run by Ultima Online creator Richard Garriott. It's an online adventure that will try to blend the fast-paced action of first-person shooters with the traditional fantasy-values of MMOs.
"This is an exciting time for the Tabula Rasa team," said Garriot. "With closed beta testing now in progress, we're excited to hear more what our players think."
"With fast-action and tactical combat in an RPG setting, a deep and interesting fictional universe, and many feature innovations, we think we've created a game that represents the next generation of MMO games and will revolutionize the way people play online games."

Commodore Gaming is saying that demand for its recently launched super high-spec PCs is "reaching epic proportions", which has prompted the company to make its lower-spec models available earlier than planned.
Its lower-spec PCs are the G and GS models, now selling at £949 and £1049 respectively through www.commodoregaming.com. Specifications of the machines can be found at the website.
Originally, the G and GS models weren't to be sold through the online store and would only be available through Commodore Gaming's retail outlets, which are shortly to open in the UK, Germany, France and the Benelux.
Currently, the online store is only open to residents of the UK and Ireland, but Commodore Gaming plans to open it up to the rest of Europe this month.
"It's incredible to see such demand for our gaming PCs in this first week, and as such we are offering a wider selection for our online customers to choose from. By including the Commodore G and GS models in the online store, we are now catering for all customers from entry level to extreme level", Bala Keilman, CEO for Commodore Gaming commented.

AOL's teen site, RED (http://www.beRED.com) announced today the debut of “FireChild: Tournament of the Ancients,” a 3-D, sci-fi action, multiplayer, console-quality game available for download and online play for free exclusively at www.firechildonred.com. “Tournament of the Ancients” will take place where AOL RED’s original FireChild series left off and will introduce gamers to a new battle arena and new characters. The new features will include two clans of young warriors – one led by Lona and the other by her older brother Waken – who must train together in the ruins of a dangerous and ancient arena to prepare for any possible enemy attack.
Developed by Sarbakan, this state-of-the-art multiplayer online game enables up to eight players from two different clans to take part simultaneously in real-time, shooter-type action. Each clan has access to four different character classes with distinctive skill sets and weapons, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. “Tournament of the Ancients” also features three game modes: ‘Death Match,' ‘Team Death Match,' and ‘Capture the Flag Cooperative Mode.' Each character can advance through five experience levels and has access to multiple weapons including the electrifying "Scorcher" and power-ups ranging from speed bursts to armor boosts. Top players can achieve one of five in-game rankings with the highest being War Chief.
“The animations, effects and 3-D environment of this game rival the quality of retail PC games,” said Jacquie Moen, Vice President, AOL Kids and Teens. “We are thrilled to offer RED's audience this high quality game for free on the open web."
Free to download for both casual and hard-core gamers, the art direction and original design of the FireChild universe has been adapted to make this multiplayer experience visually appealing and different from any other first-person shooter game offered on the web. “FireChild: Tournament of the Ancients” can support up to 800 simultaneous players, with a maximum of 8 players per game. The game uses a 3-D engine developed by Sarbakan using VirTools, with no plug-ins needed to play the game. Only a Broadband connection, 30MB of hard drive space and a PC running Windows are required to play.

It's speculated that Sony Online Entertainment may acquire Vanguard: Saga of Heroes developer Sigil Games, following the revelation that the two are in talks regarding the future of both the PC MMOG and Sigil.
Speaking to Vanguard Vault, Sigil CEO Brad McQuaid admitted that Vanguard isn't doing as well as hoped but explained that talks with the game's publisher SOE "are going well and first and foremost, our primary concern right now is what's best for Vanguard and its community".
"We want to ensure that this game and its community have a healthy future. The specifics that we work out over the coming days will all be with that single goal in mind", McQuaid said.
He added that "the bottom line" is that Sony Online Entertainment is going to be getting more involved with Sigil and Vanguard and that "our relationship is going to become even tighter - much tighter".
McQuaid said he couldn't say whether this means an acquisition of Sigil by SOE at this point - or whether staff and management changes will result from the talks - but did say that "regardless of the turn out, SOE knows that Sigil has the experience and vision necessary to run Vanguard and therefore a major change in that area is extremely unlikely and would be foolish on their part."
Reassuring news for current Vanguard subscribers then, and with McQuaid informing of a potential re-launch of the MMOG in late 2007 it's a game worth keeping in mind if you're a fan of the genre.
"I think it's safe to say that both Sigil and SOE see the potential of a mind blowing game by the end of the year," McQuaid told Shacknews.

Colony Studios, a new development studio set up by a number MMOG dev veterans, has revealed it's working on a sci-fi, spaced-themed massively multiplayer online game.
Speaking about the game to RPG Vault, the company's CEO Michael Wallis explained, "Our IP will be centred on a dynamic living 'world' far more than a linear storyline that hinders replayability. We will provide a ton of history and backstory in the game, but the players will consistently influence the content."
He continued, "The important differentiator is this - players will log in and react to what's been happening in the game, not log in and get the same exact experience they had the last time they played. Our game is dynamic, so you'd better keep up with it."
"Ultimately, we think this will attract the interest of gamers because of our unique approach to warfare and player vs. player combat, territory control and player advancement. Finally, the end game is what everyone strives for, and if we use our experience and talent correctly, ours will be completely immersive and rewarding."
Colony Studios' staff includes members that have worked on a number of MMOGs, such as World of Warcraft and EverQuest, along with Eve Online, City of Heroes, Dark Age of Camelot, Lord of the Rings Online and Ultima Online.
Wallis also revealed that back in 2005 Colony Studios was in negotiations with Universal regards developing a Battlestar Galactica MMOG, "but things eventually fell through due to a variety of factors beyond our control."
He added in an official statement on the forming of Colony Studios, "Most dev teams - including Colony's - have gone through the process of learning what doesn't work in game development, but our team members have also been intimately involved with creating what does work in several successful MMOs and that combination will serve us well. Our challenge is, of course, to use our experience and talent correctly to create an MMO that players will enjoy."

New version of the Nintendo 64 emulator for Windows and Linux.
Changelog:
- Core
+ detection of invalid code cache for ambiguous region now use
adler32 (faster than previous algorithm)
+ fixed a bug in ini file compression
+ added support for framebuffer effects functions : these functions
are there to help the plugins that support framebuffer extension
to zilmar's spec. These functions are based on rice's idea. I've
worked closely with Gonetz to implement these and the only plugin
that support this feature is Glide64 0.8 (when option is enabled).
Many hard to emulate framebuffer effects are supported by this
feature. Mariokart's monitor in first race running fullspeed and
puzzle effect in banjo's intro are two examples that i can think
about but there are many more.
+ detection of VI interupt rate works on weird country codes
+ better detection of self modifying code in dma
+ warnings fixed on new gcc versions
+ rsp's dmem and imem are now contiguous in PC's memory (some windows
plugins were requiring this)
+ slightly improved audio timing
+ better detection of self modifying code when accessing memory
through TLB
+ fixed a bug in RSP memory write
+ reading from ai_current_delay register should work even when
Count register is looping
+ in interpreter code : fixed a bug in jump opcodes (detection
of exceptions in delay slot in some rare conditions)
+ the event scheduler has better support for Count register loops
+ better AI interrupt handling (for musyx games for example)
+ jump opcodes changed in pure interpreter core so that they are
timed exactly like on the other cores (easier to debug this way)
+ fixed a bug when accessing memory through invalid TLB in LDL, LDR,
LWL, LWR, SWL, SDL, SDR, SWR opcodes
+ added LL, SC opcodes
+ two consecutive jump opcodes doesn't crash in the dynarec (result
is undefined according to the r4300 manual but some games are doing
it).
+ basic implementation of fpu opcodes in dynarec
+ division by 0 in FPU opcodes is returning NaN
+ all jump opcodes implemented in the dynarec
+ faster inside function loop with dynarec (register cache)
+ various bug fixes in dynarec opcodes
+ memory access improvements in dynarec
- Linux version
+ GUI and all plugins have been switched to GKT2 (all old plugins
should be recompiled for GTK2)
+ detection of GTK 1.2 or GTK 2 in the configure script : if both
are detected, the user can choose which one to use
+ configure script rewritten so that it's compatible with standard
unix shells instead of bash
+ much improved multi-user install support : if multi-user is choosen
in configure script, mupen64 should be compiled ("make") and installed
("make install"). Then, when a user launch mupen64, it will create
automatically a .mupen64 folder in his home and put all required files
there.
+ language saved and restored correctly when quitting mupen64
+ the console version (mupen64_nogui) has command line support and can
read settings from the gui version config file thanks to jogibear's patch
+ autoincrement save slot option when quick saving (thanks to jdratlif's
patch)
+ speed limiter in the core
+ support for plugin configuration changes when a rom is running
- Windows version
+ autoincrement save slot option when quick saving (thanks to jdratlif's
patch)
+ stabilty improvements on the GUI (when closing a rom for example)
+ added support for readScreen function to support avi recording feature
on plugins that don't use opengl or directx (ie: glide64...)

Due out this year, The Witcher's an RPG in development at Polish outfit CD Projekt set in the fantasy world created by author Andrzej Sapkowski. New gameplay footage released focuses heavily on combat, main character Geralt wielding his blade and engaging multiple enemies who are dispatched in gouts of blood. He can even deflect arrows with his sword, he's that cool.
CD Projekt is aiming to deliver a role-playing game experience that marries this action with a world where your decisions can alter the way events play out. Yep, we've seen it before, but rather than presenting a game world that's very black and white in this regard instead it treads grey moral ground where the lines between good and evil are blurred. Well, that's the idea at least.

It's no great surprise perhaps considering the huge success of WoW, but new information coming to light indicates that Blizzard has further plans afoot in the MMORPG space.
A job listing posted in the Employment section of the developer's website reveals that it's looking to recruit a lead engine programmer who will "lead an engine-programming team focused on next-generation massively multiplayer online games."
The job listing doesn't spill any further beans and neither, unsurprisingly, is Blizzard. The developer told GameDaily it's not ready to reveal any new projects at this time, although a representative added, "I can say that we have multiple unannounced projects in development and are exploring various options for the future of our franchises."
While the phrase "next-generation" could be taken to mean the new console generation, it could equally be taken literally to mean the next generation of MMORPGs. Whether the job listing is connected to Blizzard's new product announcement it's making next month, we'll just have to wait and see.

If your shedding a tear over the recent news of a delay for Warhammer Online, then take these new screenshots as a metaphorical hanky to mop up the drops. 24 images from the WAR vault show Chaos, Greenskin and Dwarf races.
EA Mythic's MMORPG is now due Q1 2008, but the slip is by no means dampening our anticipation for the title. Games Workshop's rich and established fantasy universe coupled with the development talent of the chaps that brought us Dark Age of Camelot is a recipe for success.

A stunning in-game trailer for Activision's upcoming Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has just been released.
Call of Duty 4 is finally leaving the WWII era and taking focus on a new modern-day war. This is the first footage of the game, and shows players doing battle in what appears to be a middle-east setting in chaotic gun fights with enemy forces.
By the looks of it, helicopters will also play a significant roll in the game, with one scene showing them spotting enemies in a the night using night-vision technology.

NCsoft is currently investigating the theft and sale of sensitive code from its upcoming MMO, Lineage III.
The South Korea-based developer confirmed to next-gen.biz that authorities looking into the theft are investigating seven former employees of the company, who allegedly played a role in selling the stolen code to a major Japanese game company.
Software was allegedly showed and possibly copied during a job interview, with Police speculating that Lineage III code may have been being leaked from September 2006.
An NCsoft representative said the investigation was "ongoing", but refused to comment further.
