Sports Interactive and Sega have blown the lid off Football Manager Live, a new direction for the acclaimed football management sim that kicks it into the world of massively multiplayer online gaming.
Scheduled to release in spring 2008, the game lets you create a football club from scratch and pit it against other virtual managers over the 'net. Sega describes it as "the definitive test of football management skills, allowing you to set-up mini-leagues amongst your friends, bid in player auctions and compete in live matches 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."
Matches in Football Manager Live occur in real-time with games watched via a 2D match engine, and managers are given a range of tactical options with which to switch team play during on-pitch confrontations. You can also hurl ridicule at your manager opponent via in-game chat while on the virtual touchline, and managers can watch competitors play to scout out enemy strategy and tactics.
"Imagine a cross between Football Manager, fantasy sports and auctions sites and you are part of the way to understanding Football Manager Live" Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson has said. "It's great to be able to announce the game, and we can't wait to see the reaction to the beta when it launches next month."
Bringing the series to the MMOG world hasn't seen the nitty-gritty of management ripped out either. Balancing finances, improving squads by selling players and using an auction style transfer system will all be part of the experience, and you'll also get to do obvious stuff like choose your club name, colours, badge and home pitch size.
Sports Interactive co-founder Oliver Collyer, who's idea Football Manager Live is, has said the developer is "creating something that is fun, challenging and sociable... With Football Manager Live, we're ripping up the script that says how online football management games should work."

We're taking our first look at Sword Of The New World this morning, a Korean MMORPG that's been picked up by publisher K2 Network for a Western release and is due out this summer.
Screenshots focus on the game's Elementalist class, which draws on the powers of fire, ice and lightning to obliterate foes.
Sword Of The New World's fictional story is modelled on Europe's venture to and exploration of the New World, and the game brings something a little unusual to the MMORPG genre via the ability to control three characters simultaneously. Hopefully that doesn't equate to triple the grind.
This mechanic is joined by MMORPG staples of questing, exploration and combat. PvP and PvE fighting is accompanied by arena-based combat for Family vs. Family duelling (i.e. three-character groups versus three-character groups) and City vs. City battles.
Sword Of The New World's been well-received in Korea, but whether it's suitable for a Western palate we'll just have to wait and see.

Blizzard VP of game design, Rob Pardo, has given an interview that does more to tease fans of World of Warcraft than offer any new hard information.
Speaking generally to Next-Gen about what's next on the developer's white board of big, new game ideas Pardo said, "We have other PC projects in development and we're already working on new stuff for World of Warcraft, like another expansion. We've mentioned in the past that we'd love to get a boxed expansion out every year but it's more important to deliver really high quality content to our fans. If we can do that every year that'd be great but we're not going to do that at the expense of the experience."
The popularity of the MMORPG genre is on the up though, as is its population. Codemasters is about the jump on the bandwagon with the full release of Lord of the Rings title (and you can read the exclusive CVG review here), while Eidos is prepping the hotly-anticipated Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures for release later this year.
Does Pardo feel any pressure then to keep the WoW players on Blizzard servers? "Of course we want our gamers to stay in the world for as long as we can. But I look at this from the positive angle of us trying to entertain them. We're trying to give them new experiences. One of my favourite analogies is how much an MMO is like a TV series.
"We're developing episodes just like Lost or Seinfeld. We're always trying to come up with something that's true to the theory; that's true to the content that people love; but that is new. From the moment that the series starts re-treading the same ground over and over again... well, that's what we're trying to avoid."
And what about the much-talked about prospect of WoW (or any other Blizzard titles) ever going multi-platform? "It's always possible. Whenever we come up with game concepts we really try to come up with a game and a universe at the same time and it's really whatever makes sense to the game. It's something we always talk about and always think about exploring," says Pardo.

Bethesda has opened its Fallout 3 forum, opening the gate on the official internet place where fans can discuss the sequel till their hair falls out from radiation.
The developer's still keeping Fallout 3 under wraps as it beavers away on it at its HQ, but it's not kept completely quiet about project.
Recently Bethesda's Pete Hines said of the sequel that "not everybody is going to agree with the game we're making", telling PC Zone magazine "some folks just aren't going to give it a
Hines went on to explain that the Bethesda team are all big Fallout fans and that the studio feels it's doing Fallout 3 "having done one and two, even thought we didn't".
"Much like The Elder Scrolls, we look at what worked, we look at what didn't; we look at where we want to take it, how to move it forward and keep it relevant", he continued.
"But we also want to stay true to the stuff people remember and took to heart in Fallout, which were the kinds of quests you did, the choices that were laid before you, the way the game would play differently depending on how you were role-playing and the setting... That sort of stuff."

Sins of a Solar Empire is a space-based PC game that combines real-time combat with grand-scale space strategy - new screenshots have been released.
Developed by Ironclad, the title finds players conquering worlds, engaging in diplomacy and trading with other civilisations and attempting to enhance their economic and military power and research new technology through resources at their disposal. So kind of like Civilization in space we guess.
Sins of a Solar Empire is due in August, but currently is only confirmed for North American release where it'll be published by Stardock Entertainment.

Game Entertainment Europe has struck the gong this morning and announced that the European beta for Martial Heroes is now open.
It will take place on a new and exclusive server called Pandora, which has been completely translated into English. In addition to this there will be in-game support from more than 50 Game Master Helpers talking in all sorts of languages, including German, Dutch, French and Polish.

Martial Heroes is an MMORPG based in a parallel medieval Chinese world where Martial Arts is at the centre of everything achieved. You'll get to join the battle between lawful and evil as either an Assassin, Mage, Monk or Warrior.
The game's been available in the Eastern reaches of the world since 2003, and is largely a typical online adventure based around undergoing quests, crafting and climbing an unlimited amount of levels. However, combo attacks resulting in special critical hits and an innovative fame system set it a little apart - which earn you ranks and abilities as you gain reputation.
Martial Heroes also lets you change real life money into in-game currency, giving you access to special items in an online shop. These largely consist things that let you re-specialise your character's abilities, undoing previous errors or even changing your appearance. For 2000 Game Oxygen (in-game currency) you should expect to pay EUR 10.
The game is free to download and play, and can be nabbed from the freshly launched European website. Here you'll also find player rankings, the shop, guides, media, and all the other paraphernalia you'd expect.

Crysis' plot deals with the US of A and the North Korean Government forming an unlikely alliance to tackle alien invasion of Earth. We've heard zip on Ubisoft's videogame based on TV show Lost since its announcement last May, but new details emerging are confirming platforms the title is heading to.
Reported on Joystiq, a new official Lost podcast has found the show's producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse stating that the game is heading to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
Cuse explained that Ubisoft Montreal, which is handling development, recently "did a demo on some of the stuff", Lindelof adding that what was shown was "very impressive".
Ubisoft's Lost videogame has previously been described as an adaptation of the series, the gameplay expected to revolve around new interactive stories told within the Lost universe.

Massive Entertainment has suggested it'll revisit the real-time strategy genre for its next title after its RTS World in Conflict.
Martin Walfisz, Massive Entertainment's founder and president, revealed the developer has "some unfinished business within RTS" in an interview with CVG to be published in full shortly.
"And we think that we're really pushing the envelope with World in Conflict!", Walfisz added - while he didn't elaborate on precisely what the developer's unfinished business is, Massive is obviously cooking up a future RTS dish it believes is pretty damn saucy.
The developer isn't ruling out ventures into other genres in the future either, Walfisz explaining the Massive Entertainment team "consists almost completely of gamers, many of whom enjoy a lot of other genres than RTS, so it's very possible that a future project will not follow our traditional line of games."
He revealed the developer has "a couple of guys who are experimenting with some weird game ideas", but added that the team is "so knee deep in WIC that we'll have to reveal our secrets some other day."

Hosted by exec producer and thoroughly nice bloke Jeffrey Steefel, this skills and traits dev diary gives you a nice overview of how LOTRO's skills system works, showing you how your character can acquire extra skills and traits outside of your normal class, allowing you to build up a multi-skilled and unique character in the realms of Middle-earth online.
Not much more to add, except fire up the movie player top right and enjoy!

Lead designer on the game and founder of developer Splash Damage, Paul Wedgwood, has been speaking to CVG about the highly anticipated shooter Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
"Id Software has a plan that they're putting together at the moment for on-going support. That hasn't been finalised yet but they're committed to making sure the community has everything it needs to keep it active. As for Splash Damage our focus is really on the PC SKU now, that and supporting the developers that are working on the console versions," Wedgwood told CVG in a recent interview that you can find in full here.
"As soon as we're done with the PC version we're going to be working on the SDK which is really releasing the source code, the documentation that we've maintained over the last couple of years, the artistic media level designers are going to want for putting together big megatextures and getting that out into the community so that mod makers and level designers can get a start on creating their content. Once we're done with that we'll look at the plans that Id Software has."

Christian Svensson, Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, has said that part of the Lost Planet team is working on something secret, but it is lost planet related.
Back in February we reported on a rumour that popped up about a game in development called Lost Planet Wars from Capcom.
Word has it that Lost Planet Wars was a sequel to the chill-shooter released on 360 last year.
Coming from a recent Capcom Gamers' Day, Svensson revealed that Capcom has BIG plans for the future of the game: "The Lost Planet team is sort of split into a couple of different parts: One is working on new content and features for download. Another is working on the PC product," he told Team Xbox. "And then there's another part of the team that's working on something that I can't talk about...but it's still Lost Planet-related."
Can't talk about? But it is Lost Planet related. Sounds like a spin-off or sequel to us. Or both...

How many RPGs have followed the Diablo formula? We don't have enough fingers to count. The latest to do so is Dawn of Magic, a hack 'n' slash role-playing game created by Russian developer SkyFallen which is due to release on these shores on April 27. But while it might echo Blizzard's creation, Dawn of Magic game designer Alexander Chulkov is bold enough to call it "first among equals".
Chulkov speaks further about the action-RPG in an internal interview conducted by Koch Media, which is publishing Dawn of Magic on these shores through its label Deep Silver.

It's been confirmed that Capcom's Xbox 360 shooter Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is PC-bound and due to release on these shores in June.
According to reports from Japanese press, Lost Planet on PC will support DirectX 10.
Lost Planet is a third-person shooter set in the future that drops players into the boots of a pilot called Wayne, who wakes after being seriously injured only to discover he's suffering from severe memory loss.
What follows is balls-to-the-wall action as Wayne battles alien aggressors and pirates in unforgiving arctic environments and uncovers a devious plot - well, he would do, wouldn't he - set in motion by the Neo Venus Construction Corporation.
Presumably Lost Planet's multiplayer component is being kept intact for the PC version, and it's possible the release will include download content deployed for the Xbox 360 original.

Now that we've had a little peep at the Persian faction in forthcoming PC RTS Ancient Wars: Sparta, it's time to turn attention to the Egyptians. The Bangles once wrote a song about Egyptians, but they're probably not starring in this game.
Anyway, the Egyptian faction gets a number of unique units and structures to help turn the tide of battle in its favour. The Obelisk, for example, slows down enemy troops, while the Horus Priest can blind enemies or burn them with holy fire and war engine the Throwing Machine can shoot multiple arrows and is ideal against ground troops.
In addition, and like the Persians, the Egyptians have an elite battle unit - in this case the warriors of the Pharaohs Guard, men's men tough enough to handle the Persian Immortal.
Ancient Wars: Sparta is set in the ancient Mediterranean between 500 and 450 BC and finds Spartans, Egyptians and Persians fighting for control of the region.
