Experts have long upheld that commanding is really not all that difficult. Similarly, experts have also upheld that conquering is also a bit on the overrated. But to command AND conquer...now that...that is something really special.
That's why for this week's Frankenreview we're covering Westwood's sequel to Tiberian Sun (released 8 years ago already, btw), Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. It's not just another RTS. It's another RTS with campy video. (And I mean that as a compliment).
So what did the "experts" have to say?
Yahoo
This is probably the first Westwood style RTS that has almost everything you could want. It has hotkeys, easy unit selection options, ample visual cues, solid tactical AI, useful unit stances, formations, big obvious buttons, and helpful tool tips. You can even set an adjustable speed slider for multiplayer games and skirmishes. Cranked way down, Command & Conquer 3 is absolutely languid.
Gamespot
Some of the maps and textures are somewhat bland, but you aren't bound to care for long...In the most extreme battles, your screen will fill with mighty blasts and streams of lasers, as if you were the main player in a sci-fi action film. Amazingly, the game's performance never suffers, with few noticeable drops in frame rate and brief loading times.
Eurogamer
It's not really even trying to be a serious RTS - it just wants to live up to its name. You command, usually by drawing a big rectangle around everything on screen, and then you conquer, usually by then right-clicking on an enemy power station so their defences run out of juice and you can then kill everything else...this C&C is about entertaining rather than challenging.
Games Rader
Right off the bat, you'll notice how fast the game plays. Even at the default setting, there is little time for planning what you will build next or in which direction you will expand. Get a build order memorized and go, go, go; this is one of the most frantic real time-strategies in recent years....This is good, in a way, since it means you'll get to the action quickly.
Games For Windows (1up)
The last time we saw live bodies in a game was...what, last century?...Whether it's Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) preaching you up in punky fishnets, Josh Holloway (Lost) drawling like everyone's favorite Southern-fried wiseass...personality's the reason why you really can't miss Tiberium Wars...[it's a] revival of steely actors staring you straight in the eye and declaiming "Save our bacon or else!"... Consequently, this sequel...has something that most of its peers don't: personality.
I miss the early CD titles and their obsession with awkward, cheesy live action video. So this is a must-buy in my book...though I'm waiting for the 360 version.

Next month Lineage II fans are being treated to Interlude, a free update for the MMORPG that acts as a bridge between the current Chaotic Chronicle campaign and the forthcoming Chaotic Throne which is due later this year.
In addition to introducing new quests, new items, new weapon augmentations and a new duelling system for PvP, the update features new territory ripe for exploration by adventurers. What follows is descriptions of the new territories, words penned by Lineage II associate producer Tim Tan.
Primeval Isle: South of Rune Castle lies the mysterious territory of Primeval Isle. This ancient and primitive land was lost to the rest of Aden for years. This allowed many species of creatures, once thought extinct, to grow and strive untouched by the will of man. As time passed, explorers from the mainland found the island. Hungry for the riches they hoped to find, waves of humans settled on the island. What lies ahead for new adventurers?
Primeval Wharf: Located on the northwest corner of the island is the Wharf. Unless you possess superior swimming abilities, your best bet on reaching Primeval Isle is to take a ferry from Rune Harbor. Once you reach the wharf, you will be greeted by a host of humans, each pursuing the goal of claiming fame and riches. Here you can purchase supplies, find out more about the history of the Island, accept quests from locals who are in need of help, or for the eager to return to the mainland, acquire a ticket for a trip back home. For a price you can even summon fallen companions to you at the wharf.
Primeval Plains: Located south of the Wharf are the Primeval Plains. This vast open area is inhabited by Ornithomimus, Deinonychus, Pachykepalosaurus, and Wild Striders. Adventurers looking for a challenge can seek and try to defeat the raid boss "Uruka". Uruka is known to roam the southern half of the plains. Far to the south, you can speak to Orachochin. He can assist you with arranging a face to face meeting with the leaders of the reptilian Elroki.
Elroki Isle: Located south of the main island is the Elroki Isle. This place is home to the leaders of the rational and sentient reptilian Elroki. A proud and noble race, the Elrokians have mastered the habitat by learning how to hunt the ever present dinosaurs. Here you may gain favor with the islands' natural inhabitants by completing the tasks that they may have for you.
Lost Nest:Located east of the Primeval Plains is the Lost Nest. Here the sky is obscured by the seemingly ever-present cover of tree branches. The Lost Nest is home to Velociraptor, Arachnoid, and Pterosaur. Those looking for a challenge can also see out the fearsome Tyrannosaurus. As the natural predator of the island, the Tyrannosaurus should be approached with caution.
Sailren's Lair: Located in the southeast of the Lost Nest is the Sailren's Lair. The Sailren is a raid boss level monster that has survived on the island for many years. During this time he's collected quite a treasure trove. Do you have what it takes to defeat the Sailren, and claim some of the treasure as your own?

There's no technical reason why Team Fortress 2 couldn't allow PC players and Xbox 360 players to play against each other, says developer Valve.
"We'd love to, technically from our side, there's no reason why we can't," said Valve's Robin Walker, designer and engineer on TF2, speaking to Game Informer.
"It really comes down to knowing Microsoft has announced that Shadowrun is going to do that, but they haven't let anyone outside of Microsoft, I mean we don't have an API or anything."
The first games to support cross-platform play via Microsoft's Games for Windows - Live will be fantasy shooter Shadowrun and a Vista version of Uno. The service is due out on May 18 and will share a subscription with its Xbox 360 counterpart.
Shadowrun however was built from the ground up for this kind of cross-platform play; we're not too keen to find out how it would affect online games in the sequel to our fondly loved Team Fortress.

Microsoft may be trumpeting the dawn of DirectX 10 and it's incredible impact on the PC gaming experience, but not every developer is ready join the jamboree and adopt the new version of the API just yet.
In fact, according the Codename Panzers dev Stormregion, there's actually still plenty to explore in DirectX 9.
"We think that there are still several untapped opportunities in the previous versions of API so we are focusing on DirectX9 currently", Stormregion's lead designer László Peller told us in an interview on Codename Panzers: Cold War, which will be published soon.
Peller added that the developer "we will be looking at it more closely" and evaluating use of DirectX 10 in its games "when DirectX10 compatible hardware has penetrated the market more so than now... for now, the market is too small".
id Software's John Carmack voiced a similar view earlier this year, saying "There's no massive pull for me for DX10".
Speaking about possible use of DirectX 10 for Quake Wars in an interview with Game Informer, Carmack continued, "It would be more a question of if we don't think we're going to get done until Vista is broadly adopted, it might just save us development and support things to say it's a DX10 game.
"But there's no huge thing where we're dying to use any particular DX10 feature. It would just more be a question about practically, is the market there where we can write off everything else?"
Carmack also described DirectX 9 as being "really quite a good API... it's probably the best graphics API as far as a sensibly designed thing that I've worked with".

Bug Fixes
· Fixed an error that would occasionally result in a crash in Nod vs. Nod matches on the multiplayer map Deadly Sertao.
· Fixed issues with automated map transfer feature in multiplayer.
· Fixed an error that would sometimes cause a Commentator's telestrator drawings to not erase as intended while viewing BattleCast replays.
· Fixed issues with replay file playback.
· Fixed placeholder text and chat log errors with the Comrade in-game chat window.
Other Changes
· Fixed an error in README.txt file regarding location of saved game files in Windows Vista; added references to EA Link version of the game; added disclosure about in-game advertising (Note: the EA Link version of the game ships with this updated ReadMe file).

Microsoft may be happy with the number of copies of Vista it's pushing out the door these days, but it seems that at least some recipients of the OS are finding that it puts as big a strain on their patience as it does their hardware, with numerous complaints cropping up of delays and stalls while moving, copying, or deleting files. According to The Register, Microsoft seems to be aware of the problem, and has already issued a "hotfix" for a related issue that may or may not also apply to this particular problem, although that's neither as easily accessible or as easy to apply than a proper patch. On that latter point, a Microsoft spokesman would only go so far as to tell The Reg that they'd check to see if a proper patch was in the works, though there doesn't appear to be any further word on that possibility as of yet.

2K Games has blown the lid off Beyond the Sword, a second expansion for Civilization IV which is due to release in July.
Beyond the Sword focuses on time periods post the invention of gunpowder and features 12 scenarios that have been created by Firaxis and members of the Civ community. In addition, 16 new leaders, five new wonders, and a variety of new units are included.
2K Games has said the expansion ushers in the largest amount of expansion content in the history of the Civilization franchise, hitting us with a monster list of key features:
Expanded Epic Game: Firaxis Games delivers a massive increase in new units, buildings, and technologies to the epic game with additional focus on the late-game time periods.
New Game Scenarios: The expansion will deliver 12 new scenarios, many containing themes never before included in the Civilization series, custom designed by the team at Firaxis and select members of the Civ Fan Community.
New Civilizations: The expansion pack includes ten new civilizations, such as Portugal, Babylon and Netherlands and their associated unique units and buildings.
More Civilization Leaders: Sixteen new leaders including leaders for the ten new civilizations, as well as additional leaders for existing civilizations.
Corporations: A new gameplay feature that allows players to create corporations and spread them throughout the world. Each corporation provides benefits in exchange for certain resources.
Espionage: Now available much earlier in the game, this expanded feature offers players many new ways to spy on opponents, stir citizen unrest and defend their government's secrets.
Events: New random events such as natural disasters, pleas for help, or demands from their citizens will challenge players to overcome obstacles in order for their civilizations to prosper.
New Wonders: Five new wonders await discovery including the Statue of Zeus, Cristo Redentor, Shwedagon Paya, the Mausoleum of Maussollos, and the Moai Statues.
Expanded Space Victory: Winning the race to Alpha Centauri will now require more strategic planning and tactical decision making.
Apostolic Palace: The United Nations will become available earlier in the game, providing a way for players to win a diplomatic victory earlier. New resolutions will also be added which will expand the available diplomatic options.
Advanced Starts: A major fan request, this new feature will enable players to "buy" components of a custom-tailored empire and begin play in the later part of the game, allowing them to experience many of the new features of the expansion pack in a shorter amount of time.
Enhanced AI: The AI has received many enhancements, making it tougher to beat on the higher difficulty levels. The ways in which the AI will attempt to achieve victory have also been expanded.
Now you've read through that lot, you can have a look at the pretty Beyond the Sword artwork we've been sent. Enjoy.

The Bitmap Brothers has become part of the team working on the recently-revealed remake of Speedball 2, the Bitmap's popular futuristic brutal sports game from the 1990s.
Mike Montgomery, The Bitmap Brothers founder, is to supervise all steps of development.
Publisher Frogster Interactive, the Speedball 2 remake overlord, has also announced that French studio Kylotonn Entertainment is to actually develop the game and act as co-producer.
In addition, we're informed that Kylotonn is making use the AGEIA physics engine for Speedball 2, meaning "Moveable game objects and spectacular physics gimmicks will be [a] prominent part of the action sports game".
Speedball 2 is currently pencilled in for a Q3 2007 release on PC, and Frogster says the remake "transforms the futuristic game setting with state-of-the-art technology into a high-speed online sports spectacle".

Frank Klepacki may not be a name you're that familiar with but he played a key role in the music for the Command & Conquer series. He's now working at Petroglyph under the title audio director, and is creating music for the developer's forthcoming RTS Universe at War: Earth Assault.
He talks about his work in a video interview available via our video player.
Universe at War is set in the near future and deals with alien invasion of Earth, Petroglyph promising huge depth and customisations in the RTS experience. Speaking about the storyline previously, the developer's Adam Isgreen has explained that mankind has encountered an aggressive alien species bent on invasion of Earth and that ""The invaders are not here to conquer - they're here to harvest."
"Massive walking machines consume plant, animal and mineral without distinction. Press gang-like hordes of invading ground troops herd humans into enormous mass drivers, launching them up to the invader's ships that orbit the planet, never to be seen again. Our game begins on the eve of the last day of human resistance... Or is it?"

Microsoft has announced that more than 20 million copies of Windows Vista were sold in the month after the new OS was released worldwide on January 30.
That means Vista is selling at more than twice the rate of its predecessor - it took Windows XP two months to achieve sales of 17 million.
The 20 million figure is comprised of Windows Vista licenses sold to PC manufacturers, copies of upgrades and the full packaged product sold to retailers, and upgrades ordered through the Windows Vista Express programme between January 30 and February 28.
"We are encouraged to see such a positive consumer response to Windows Vista right out of the gate," said Bill Veghte, corporate vice president of the Windows business group at Microsoft.
"While it’s very early in the product lifecycle, we are setting a foundation for Windows Vista to become the fastest-adopted version of Windows ever."
Vista was launched in the UK with a special event at the British Library, where Bill Gates discussed some of the operating system's new functionalities.
There was little mention of gaming at the event, but since then Microsoft has revealed more details of Games for Windows Live, which will allow PC and Xbox owners to compete against each other in multiplayer games.

Screenshots from Guild Wars: Eye of the North are letting our eyes rove over what ArenaNet is describing as "the first true expansion" for the Guild Wars franchise.
Eye of the North has been officially announced today, although details on the expansion have already appeared on the internet. Due in Q3 2007, it requires any one of the three previous Guild Wars releases to play and ArenaNet says it will "benefit long-time players of the Guild Wars games, with all of the content targeting existing Guild Wars characters."
The expansion features 18 large, multi-level dungeons, 150 new skills across all 10 Guild Wars professions, 10 new Heroes, 40 new armour sets and additional items, weapons and titles. It's set largely in the dungeons and caverns of the lands of Tyria that players first explored in Guild Wars Prophecies, ArenaNet has explained.
In addition to officially announcing Eye of the North, the developer has confirmed Guild Wars 2. Eye of the North provides "a Hall of Monuments where players' accomplishments are memorialized and eventually inherited by their Guild Wars 2 characters, unlocking exclusive items and bonuses in Guild Wars 2".
A launch date for Guild Wars 2 isn't yet set, but as previously reported ArenaNet expects the sequel to go into beta in 2008. As with Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2 will be subscription-free and "will draw from the game mechanics that made the original Guild Wars one of the most popular online games ever and will add a fully persistent world".

THQ and GSC Game World have been quick to issue the first patch for S.T.A.L.K.E.R., with patch documentation listing an impressive 68 bugs that have been addressed. Many of the fixes correct multiplayer issues.
Unfortunately, saved games from previous versions of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. won't work with the patch, which is a kick in the teeth. After installing the patch, you're instructed, go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\STALKER-SHOC\savedgames and "make sure any saves that were created prior to installing the patch are deleted. You will need to make sure that hidden folders are visible on the view tab of the folder options menu."

"Some people will like it, some people will hate it. Some people already like it or hate it, and they don't even know what we're doing yet!", Bethesda's Pete Hines has said of reception to Fallout 3.
It's the RPG follow-up that's been long looked-for by the series seriously hardcore fanbase, a fanbase that the developer has to face and one that's highly dubious about what Bethesda will produce.
Hines recently told PC Zone, "not everybody is going to agree with the game we're making: it's a solid-gold lock... some folks just aren't going to give it a chance out of the box".
Still, he was keen to indicate how dedicated the developer is to the Fallout series.
"We're all big Fallout fans", he explained, adding that the Bethesda team has played Fallout and Fallout 2 and "the non-RPG ones". I mean, I play Fallout Tactics, I played Brotherhood of Steel because I felt I had to give it a look. And I was sorry I did so.
"We feel that we're doing Fallout 3 having done one and two, even thought we didn't", Hines continued. Much like The Elder Scrolls, we look at what worked, we look at what didn't; we look at where we want to take it, how to move it forward and keep it relevant."
He added, "But we also want to stay true to the stuff people remember and took to heart in Fallout, which were the kinds of quests you did, the choices that were laid before you, the way the game would play differently depending on how you were role-playing and the setting... That sort of stuff."
You can read more words from Bethesda's Pete Hines on Fallout 3 in issue #180 of PC Zone magazine, which goes on sale on Thursday, 29th March.
