Washington Post columnist Mike Musgrove offers a rare and balanced view from the mainstream press of the Slamdance Competition and Super Columbine Massacre RPG. Surprised by the effective use of flashbacks and the authentic dialogue of the Columbine game, he goes on to say: 'But when it came time to start creating mayhem in the school's halls, I couldn't bring myself to push the buttons to continue. Odd, I suppose, because I have killed thousands of video game characters over the years. And though the game's chunky graphics are primitive...no game has ever made me feel nearly as queasy. I didn't want to be responsible for the real-world violence that happened that day, even in a game.' Ledonne figures that games will either grow into a medium in which it is acceptable to confront and challenge an audience with titles like his, or will devolve into a stagnant, failed format

booster pack for Battlefield 2142 is scheduled for release this spring, it's been reported.
According to fansite Planet Battlefield, a product page for Northern Strike appeared on the official BF2142 website but was then taken down - however, not before the site took a screenshot of the page.
"The Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike Booster Pack brings all-out infantry-focused battles into new snow-covered battlegrounds across Europe," the product page states, informing that "Three new maps provide the setting for the Booster Pack. High up in the Alps the EU uses launch pods to launch an assault on a PAC Titan docking harbour on the map Port Bavaria. Bridge at Remagen, the scene for one of WWII's major battles, is once again the setting for intense battles as both sides fight to secure the bridge. Finally, night has fallen when the EU launches their assault on the city in the Liberation of Leipzig."
It adds: "Battlefield 2142: Infantry Storm offers an asymmetrical vehicle set-up with one new vehicle available to each army. The heavy IFV Goliath is a massive, slow-moving firing platform available to the EU, the attacking side, only. It is used to provide cover, as well as health and ammunition, to nearby infantrymen. The fast-moving hovering light IFV Speeder, available to the defending PAC only, is an efficient vehicle killer when staffed by a well coordinated pilot/gunner team."
It's additionally mentioned that Northern Strike features 10 new unlocks, 10 new awards, that Titan mode will be present in two of the new maps and all three maps feature "Tweaked Conquest-assault gameplay".
We've been on the blower to EA to get confirmation on the booster pack and are currently awaiting a response. UPDATE: EA has got back to us saying there's an announcement along these lines due tomorrow afternoon "that will answer your questions".

We thought we were doing pretty well reaching halfway to level 61 in World of Warcraft since the release of The Burning Crusade earlier this week, but our achievement pales in comparison to that of French WoW player Gullerbone - he's hit the MMORPGs new level cap of 70 in 28 hours, reaching level 70 in the early hours of January 17.

From January 18 a free demo of RACE - The Official WTCC Game will be available to download from Steam.
You'll have to get in there quick though as the demo will vanish in a plume of smoke on Sunday.
"RACE embodies the SimBin mantra of 'easy to learn; hard to master,'" says Henrik Roos, SimBin CEO. "Novices can get into the game and be racing immediately. And, with several game modes, the game remains challenging for expert drivers as well. RACE has been very well received by the media and we are excited to offer this extended test drive through Steam's upcoming free weekend."

Bohemia Interactive's managing director Marek Spanel spoke to CVG of the likelihood of persistent multiplayer battlefields being introduced to its military sim Armed Assault in the future.
Although Spanel said that such a multiplayer feature "is something that really isn't present in the game as of now", when we met up with him earlier today, he did explain that it's "something we hope will be evolving over time".
"Due to the nature of the game, it's possible to have a large number of troops, and it's logical to go in this direction," he said. "Probably one of the modes that comes nearest is called Capture the Island. That's a mode in the game where you play on the entire island and there are sectors that you take control of and build bases there.
"This is the kind of direction but it will certainly take months and months to fully get to a persistent battlefield."
Armed Assault is Bohemia's follow-up to its multi-million selling Operation Flashpoint. Similar to Operation Flashpoint, it's a hardcore sandbox military sim where infantry and vehicular combat occurs on a huge island. Armed Assault is due out in the UK on February 16 - keep eyes peeled for a preview hitting these pages shortly.

January 16th, 2007, 18:56 Posted By: wraggster
And the WoW juggernaut rolls on. I really thought 2007 would be the year it ran out of steam, but if Burning Crusade figures are anything to go by I could well be proven wrong.
EB Australia released a statement yesterday singing its praises:
Our Burning Crusade pre-orders have already broken all our previous pre-sale records, so we're expecting a big crowd to turn up at our flagship store in Chatswood for the midnight launch. This is one of our biggest game launches ever and without a doubt our biggest PC game launch.
The single biggest PC launch is for an expansion pack? Jeez. Either that's testament to the strength of WoW or the weakness of the PC market. Or both. If you're in Sydney and up for a midnight launch, head up to the Chatswood store for "costume and trivia competitions, a life-size Orc in action, and an address by Atomic Magazine which recently visited Warcraft developer Blizzard".

There were queues on Oxford Street again last night HMV hosted the launch of the new World of Warcraft expansion pack - and struggled to meet an unexpectedly high level of demand.
"There are probably four times more people here than we expected - we think 1500," HMV's head of games, Tim Ellis, told GamesIndustry.biz.
When asked how many copies of The Burning Crusade the store had to sell, Ellis replied, "Not enough, I don't think. Put it this way, we've got a few stores in the West End and we're opening them up now to get the rest of the stock out. We've just phoned the warehouse to get stock into stores for nine tomorrow morning. We could do a couple of thousand, to be honest."
A queue had begun to form at around 5.30 that morning, but HMV staff handed out wristbands and told fans to return in the evening. However, "We catered for a certain amount of wristbands and we just gave up on them at about 7pm," Ellis said.
With more people continuing to join the queue as midnight drew nearer, the scenes at HMV were reminiscent of console launches, as Ellis agreed. "It's bigger, to be honest," he observed.
"I think we'll be all right on stock, but it's gone OTT - it's absolutely unbelievable."

Ubisoft is giving us our first look at the PC version of its sequel Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 via five, count 'em five, screenshots. We've uploaded them here for you to pass mince pies over. In addition, the publisher's also fired out new screens from the Xbox 360 version of the tactical shooter follow-up. Which we've uploaded here too. Enjoy.
Here's the scoop on GRAW 2's plot from Ubisoft: "Following the failure of the coup d'etat in Mexico City Mexican rebels have gathered their remaining forces along the US border. Lead your team of elite Special Forces for the first time on US soil - straddling the border between Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas. The Ghosts have less than 72 hours to stop a nuclear attack. You are the last line of defense and must do what it takes to be victorious."
Both versions of the game are down for release on March 9. A PS3 iteration is down for the console's launch in the UK

Abborado Studios has announced Once Upon A Time in Japan: Earth, the first title of a three-part series that will look at various periods in Japan's "storied" history.
It's a third-person point-and-click adventure for the PC, which tells the story of Zenjiro, a samurai who left his clan during a time of war in search of a peaceful life with his family.
Quality is key for the Texan developer, as Abborado's co-founder Jared Morante explains:
"What we're doing with these games will hopefully enthral players and we strive to excel in every area, from art, to gameplay design, writing, character development, and score."
The title will be digitally hand drawn and animated, inspired by classic Disney and Studio Ghibli animations. A full original score and authentic Japanese voice acting are also expected, as well as laboriously researched puzzles, to ensure their historical accuracy.
The first game is due for release in Q4 2007.

Brian Eno has confirmed he will be composing the Spore soundtrack.
The father of modern ambient music revealed his involvement in a recent lecture in Berlin, written up by website WMMNA.
"Generativity plays a role in many fields now, with gaming being no exception. Also built around this notion and probably one of the currently most eagerly awaited games is Will Wright's Spore, for which Brian Eno, as he revealed, will be making the soundtrack!"
Rumours of Eno's involvement have been circulating since November, when Spore creator Will Wright joined him on stage to deliver a talk on the joys and techniques of generative creation. This meeting of minds made Brian a perfect choice.
"He was asked to do it, because the designers wanted sound that is just as procedural as the game itself. He went on to demonstrate a simple software called 'The Shuffler', which even with a simple combination of samples possibly would never create the same composition twice within a lifetime."
Spore is due for release in the second-half of 2007.

One of Blizzard's gold-encrusted execs has said that he "hopes" there will be another StarCraft game in the near future.
"As a Starcraft player I can tell you that I hope it wouldn't go a decade - we launched Starcraft in '98 - I hope it wouldn't go a decade before we stand here and celebrate the next Starcraft together," Itzik Ben Bassat told crowds gathered at World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade's official launch event in London last night.
"Don't forget that we have two more franchises that we love - Diablo and Starcraft," Bassat had declared.
"We haven't forgotten that we have these two franchises, and what I can tell you is that I look forward to stand here in a few years, or whenever it's going to be, and celebrate with you the launch of the next Starcraft or the next Diablo."
According to our people on the ground, the Blizzard PRs "looked a bit uncomfortable" around this point. So that's welcome to the Internet the hard way, really.
Whether all that means Bassat knows something that we don't though, or whether he's just teasing or speculating, is impossible to say - but Blizzard is notoriously secret and perfectionist about its work, and it wouldn't be a massive surprise to discover a sequel lurking in development somewhere.

With Sims expansion packs flying out of camp EA on a regular basis, there's been no shortage of games to get on with for fans of the life sim, and now EA have added three more titles to the fast-growing Sims library.
The games giant will launch a new Sims product line called Sims Stories this year, with The Sims Life Stories, due later this year, being the first of three story-driven games, allowing players to play through two romantic life plots.
The second, The Sims Pet Stories, is due in Summer 2007 and has you looking after and train virtual pets. And The Sims Castaway has you help your Sims to start a new life on a deserted, paradise island, but isn't due out until Winter 2008.
The Sims Stories games, which can be played without owning any previous version of the Sims, are touted by EA as being 'designed to be laptop-friendly', which we assume means that they will be technologically simplified, allowing them to run on not-so-powerful hardware.
EA also say they'll have 'laptop-friendly controls', but the last time we checked, laptops had mouse-and-keyboard interfaces just like desktop PCs, so we're not quite sure what that means.

Alien corrupters assaulting the GDI, and a Nod base on the defensive and under assault from, ah, aliens - it's all here in new screenshots from Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.
In addition, we're also seeing a GDI base under attack from Nod, and your good old traditional GDI vs. Nod warfare in the midst of a battlefield. And certain C&C fans in the office have also got incredibly excited that one of the screenshots features Nod structures Obelisks of Light. Nerds.

Blizzard Entertainment has suggested that online-focus and the development of its Battle.net gaming service will be a key part of its next project.
Describing itself as an "online game company" to CVG yesterday, Itzik Ben Bassat, VP of business development, explained that the developer sees "so many opportunities and possibilities" in online gaming "that I think that's what we're going to focus on - how do we take Battle.net, and converting that from the great narrowband experience that it used to be to an absolutely unbelievable broadband experience that it will be."
When asked if this is something that will be incorporated into Blizzard's next project, Bassat replied "Absolutely".
We also took the opportunity to quiz him about news hitting toward the end of 2006 that the developer will make a major announcement this year.
"We're making an announcement when we're ready to make announcements. We haven't made an announcement so far", Bassat said. So that clears that up then.
"But the main thing to remember is that we have two other franchises, Diablo and StarCraft, and there's a lot of people at Blizzard who are very passionate about these franchises, and as long as we're passionate about a certain franchise, we will not desert it, we will continue developing that.
"It's been a while since we released the last Diablo game and even more since we released the last StarCraft game. As a StarCraft player - StarCraft is my favourite Blizzard game - I hope it wouldn't be a decade from the time that we released StarCraft until we see the next StarCraft game."
So are you saying that's something we might see announced this year? "When we have something to announce we're going to announce it, but as a player I hope that it'll be as soon as possible", was the reply.

Activision has released two brand new shots for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, currently in development at Splash Damage, famed for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
Billed as the ultimate team and objective-based multiplayer experience ( by Activision, of course), you'll get to jump into the Quake universe in the year 2065 and play as either the humans or the Strogg.
It's been delayed on PC (and we're still waiting for word on the 360 version) but we're told that the game will finally be released sometime this year, unless something goes horribly wrong. And that never happens in the world of games, does it?

Blizzard has revealed that new character class additions for World of Warcraft are "definitely in our big list" of features, in an interview with CVG this afternoon.
"It's something we'll eventually do", WoW game designer game designer Jon LeCraft said during discussion about classes and imminent expansion The Burning Crusade. "I can't say when but... you know, we did add the paladins to the Horde side and the shaman to the Alliance side. We're not trying to pass that off as a new class but it did add some new dynamics to each side", he added.
Itzik Ben Bassat, vice president of business development at Blizzard who was also present in the interview, was quick to jump in on the chat about brand new classes, saying "But it is in the list of features and it's a question of when we're going to decide to do it."
"Oh yeah, that's definitely in our big list", LeCraft stated.
When we asked, 'Can you be more specific about when the new classes will be introduced?', LeCraft replied "Um, in the future probably". And everyone laughed.

Stray Bullet Games, the studio born from the ashes of the defunct Wolfpack Studios (developer of MMORPG Shadowbane) has given first word on its new project.
Details are light, but the developer has revealed that the project's a massively multiplayer online game based on "an original intellectual property conceived in-house" and that it's "actively developing a proof of concept prototype" while "the concept phase is ongoing".
Stray Bullet has gone on to say that it's "committed to creating a fully-realized, ongoing online conflict that combines furious action with tactical and strategic game play." It mentions too that game characters, guilds and factions will be engaging in "meaningful, exciting, and fun mass combat.".
It's also added that one of the new MMOG's key aspects is its look and feel.
"We have two guiding principles: Rely upon the familiar and Be bold. In setting, systems and game play, we want to build on a firm foundation of features that are familiar and comfortable to MMO players, making the game as inviting and accessible as possible. We see no need to innovate in areas MMOs already do well. At the same time, in areas that do require innovation to achieve our goals, Stray Bullet will never think small", Mike Mike Madden, creative director, explained.

Later this week we'll be taking a very close look at War Rock, but prior to that we're posting screenshots and a gameplay trailer from the front lines.
The game's been developed by South Korean studio Dream Execution Technology Co., and is an online, class-based military tactical first-person-shooter. You're able to play it both solo and in teams with mission-based action occurring in a variety of levels and game modes. While the game's free to play online, you have the option to "to purchase access to a wide variety of gameplay enhancing items and services", it says on the official War Rock website. Sounds like a game balancing nightmare, but we'll find out for sure when we check it out this week.
War Rock has just been slapped with a UK release date of February 6. It'll be in local games emporiums and should also be available via the game publisher's website, K2 Network.net. Versions localised for other European territories should be available shortly after
