September 28th, 2006, 18:10 Posted By: wraggster
In February, Sony Online Entertainment announced it was making a massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the DC Comics universe for PCs and "next-generation consoles." Though no specific platform was mentioned, given SOE's involvement, it was pretty clear that the console in question would be the PlayStation 3.
The move was a response to Microsoft's July 2005 announcement that it was making an Xbox 360 superhero MMORPG based on the library of DC's arch-nemesis, Marvel Comics. Today, the game was given a title, Marvel Universe Online, and was officially unveiled as the first original massively multiplayer title created for the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista. It will also allow players on both platforms to interact in the same game world.
Even more newsworthy is Marvel Universe Online's developer, Cryptic Studios. Besides being the developer of NCsoft's successful City of Heroes and City of Villains MMORPGs, the shop was also the defendant in a 2004 lawsuit leveled by none other Marvel Comics. Apparently Marvel felt some of the player-created characters were direct copies of such iconic characters as the Incredible Hulk and Wolverine, and sued Cryptic and NCsoft for copyright infringement.
In March 2005, a judge threw out most of the charges leveled in the lawsuit. Eighteen months later, Marvel and Cryptic haven't just buried the hatchet--they're now enthusiastic partners in making Marvel Universe Online. (NCsoft has issued a statement saying it expects to continue to work with Cryptic on City of Heroes and City of Villains.) GameSpot sat down with Cryptic Studios' creative director, Jack Emmert, and Marvel Entertainment's vice president of Interactive, Ames Kirshen--as well as Microsoft Game Studios' senior director of business development, Frank Pape--to discuss the development of this sure-to-be-important title.
GameSpot: So what's up? I hear you have something to tell our readers....
Frank Pape: What if we said we're going to start creating cloning machines, would that be exciting?
GS: Uh, yeah, that would be.
FP: We've got something better than that. We're announcing today a fantastic partnership with Cryptic Studios and Marvel to create the Marvel MMO. It will be on Xbox 360 and on Windows, and will feature cross-platform seamless simultaneous play, which we believe is unprecedented.
GS: So it'll be the same people on the PC as on the 360?
FP: Absolutely, playing at the same time, which we think is tremendous--a unique and compelling feature for folks to play the game. When we looked at this in the past, we signed with Marvel about a year ago, and we made that announcement at Comi-Con. That was a very exciting announcement, and over the time since then we chased after the fantastically successful Cryptic Studios and ending up signing with them. And some of the things I'll say about this--for us when we look at this space, the Marvel intellectual property is the strongest--one of the strongest properties you can find in the world. It's universally recognizable. We think that it transcends boundaries across the two platforms. We think that it's internationally recognizable. Obviously there's been tremendous success in the last decade with the movies from Marvel. You'd be hard pressed to find anybody that didn't know or have a favorite character in the Marvel universe.
Cryptic with their great pedigree, their great track record on the City of Heroes franchise--it was the perfect partner. We have access to all the characters in the history and lore of the Marvel universe to put into this game. So we're super excited. I mean this is, for an MMO player and for folks on the console that want to play an MMO and bringing in a new audience, it's as compelling a statement as we can make.
GS: Now I presume, the game is going to let you create your own heroes. My question is, how are the characters from the Marvel universe going to interact with those newly created characters?
Jack Emmert: Don't presume anything right now. We are dedicated to creating the ultimate Marvel experience online and we'll do whatever it takes to fulfill that. Whether you can play as a character or create your own--right now, we're not announcing anything.
GS: So when did the actual talk between Cryptic and Marvel start?
FP: Ever since we signed with Marvel, we wanted to work with Cryptic. These things take time. What is exciting about having Microsoft in the partnership is not just the technology that allows live cross-platform play, but to have the resources to build out a fantastic MMO experience and maintain it over 5, 6, 7 years and beyond. There's not a lot of publishers out there that actually have the resources to do it. So for us, we were looking for the long term. We knew who the best partner was right from the get-go. Again, it takes time to hammer out all the little details. So we were looking at them right away, and lucky for us we ended up signing them a couple of months back and we're making that announcement today.
GS: That's great. So correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first original MMOG created just for the 360 and the PC, yes?
FP: Yes.
GS: Can you go into details about like what Marvel characters are going to be in the game?
JE: What I can talk about is the fact that we have access to the entire Marvel universe. So from 1940 on, the characters, the storylines, the places, the people--it's all at our disposal, and believe me we're going to mine it for all it's worth.
GS: So it will be a contemporary setting? You're not going to do kind of a Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich sort of thing?
FP: It's contemporary. We're working side-by-side with the people at Marvel to ensure that the game is going to represent Marvel.
JE: I just want to add to that. In the past, obviously, with a lot of our games the game is based on the more singular characters. With Ultimate Spider-Man obviously we worked with Brian Michael Bendis and we've had creators work on games before. This is really the first time that we have had a day-to-day integration with the Microsoft Game Studios and Cryptic. We're really plugged into the machine of Marvel and working with the Cryptic folks, flushing out what they're doing for years to come so that the game is as relevant when it's released as it is when it was going on in the comics. If the consumer is buying the comic books and is keeping up with whatever storyline or storylines are going on at that time, that will be reflected in the game. So it will be a contemporary, synergistic collaboration going on between the three companies.
GS: So the storyline in the game will cross over into comics?
JE: Yeah. Obviously the nature of an MMO, the player is creating the stories and is formulating the world. So we're not just aping stories directly from the comic books. But the events that have happened in and around the continuity of the comic books will be reflected in the games.
GS: Will we see will we see events in the game incorporated into comics?
Ames Kirshen: Our president of publishing, Dan Buckley, and our editor-in-chief, Joe Casada, are so jazzed and excited about this project. We've gotten these guys access to these editorial resources that they have that you know, it's certainly within the realm of possibility that the two mediums could influence each other and we could see some real synergies between the books and the game once we release.
GS: Will we see anything like that with forthcoming films based on Marvel based movies? I know Iron Man's coming out with John Favreau directing...
AK: That's right.
GS: So will we see any interplay between events for Marvel-based films, or is that a whole separate entity?
AK: No, that's separate because this is really a Marvel universe game and the feature films that we have are really based on singular families or properties. Obviously, a lot of those properties are licensed by other game publishers. So we're really separating church and state in terms of those games and these universe games.
GS: Now, you mentioned Ultimate Spider-Man. Will the visual style of this game be the cel-shaded, comic-book style of like Ultimate Spider-Man?
FP: We're not really talking about the style yet. You're going to have to wait and see as we start releasing assets over time
GS: Okay.
AK: The world of the MMO will be grounded in the core Marvel universe, not the Ultimate universe, and Jack and his team are working on some really revolutionary techniques and visual styles that we'll reveal to the world at a later date.
GS: What's the release timeframe on this?
FP: We aren't just talking specifically about release dates as of yet.
GS: I'm just wondering, because I know Sony is working on a DC Comics MMOG....
FP: They are?
GS: Yeah.
FP: Really! That's news. [Laughs] Like they said, we're not announcing a date right now. As we get closer in development to have a meaningful announcement and start to be able to show off assets and stuff, we'll let that information out.
AK: I do have to say that much like next month, when Ultimate Alliance releases the week after Justice League Heroes, it would be rather interesting if we both came out in the same window of time.
GS: Can you give us any idea of how what kind of content will be released on Xbox Live Marketplace for this game?
JE: Well, we can't talk specifically about anything but certainly we're excited at all the opportunities that the Microsoft Marketplace offers to us.
AK: From the Marvel perspective, that is a big reason why we decided to go first-party with this MMOG. Obviously in the past, all of our licensed games have been done by third party publishers--Activision, EA, THQ, Vivendi--that are platform agnostic. But when we first started sitting down with Microsoft in Hamburg two years ago, they really kind of let us in behind the curtain and showed us what they're going to be doing with 360, with Live and Marketplace. That was a big reason why Marvel felt comfortable going first-party with the MMO and I think, given where they are with the platform now, we're all pretty pleased that we made that decision.
FP: Adding to what Ames said, for us we have the resources to bring to bear on it, Live is obviously the dominant online console platform today. And Windows Live is going to have seamless integration with Xbox Live. Obviously we've seen it and lived it over here and Marketplace obviously offers tremendous opportunity. We've been very supportive of content for our other games, Project Gotham Racing 3 and lots of the other games you'll see out there, and individual transactions and stuff. So, you can imagine that we're looking at it from those perspectives and have the resources to do something that's really going to grab a hold of the audience and just--and never let them go and make them completely immersed.
GS: Right. Just to confirm, the PC version is going to be Vista only, right?
FP: Yes.
GS: OK. As far as subscription goes, I assume it's just going to be a flat pricing model?
FP: It's going to be a million dollars a year! No, we haven't determined what the model will be yet. We're going to make sure that that the pricing model that we use, and how we have consumers end up paying for the game, is consistent with what we've done in the past and consistent with what the marketplace will accept. So we're not announcing anything right now, but you know, understand that we are trying to attract as many consumers as we can on both platforms.

Many people who have a holier-than-thou attitude about video games think nothing is wrong with devoting hours every day to pimping themselves on a dating site, or jazzing up their MySpace profile in the hopes that someone takes a second glance.
A recent article by the Wall Street Journal ("The Undateables", September 23, 2006, subscribers only) covers the top six online dating websites, and the habits of the users and ... surprise! They get sucked into an all-new online existence, and spend most days logged onto the site to spruce up a photo, comment on a message board, or groom their profile in an effort to get noticed. When they do, they are rewarded with bling, like a featured profile, or a move into the "local hotties" section.
Sarah Schoomer signed into Consumating.com and finds herself "logging eight hours a day on the site, trying to up her score by being more visible in message boards and sending strangers clever notes; her laundry, exercise routine, and sleep were suffering."
Sound familiar?
We have a feeling that the blonde next door's "I need to add three photos to my Match.com profile so that a hottie will email me" urge is probably the same as the "must get to Level 40 so I can get that mount" itch. How is this any different than logging onto World of Warcraft and running a few errand quests in order to bump up a level?
As sites like MySpace develop games for dating, and people fall in love on MMOs, these two worlds are bound to collide. Or have they already?

It's a happy day in the grim darkness of the future, relatively speaking. THQ today announced that Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, the stand-alone expansion to the real-time strategy hit Dawn of War, has gone gold and will begin shipping worldwide October 9.
Dark Crusade adds two new races to the game: the technologically minded Tau and the undead Necrons, who have recently been awakened from a 60-million-year nap and are downright cranky. The two new factions bring the game's total to seven playable races.
Developer Relic Entertainment has also included a new single-player campaign in the game to challenge players to take command of one race and exterminate all opposing forces.

Blizzard mulls over digital distribution for WoW expansion
World of Warcraft fans may be able to get their hands on forthcoming expansion The Burning Crusade without having to step out the front door.
In an interview with CVG, Blizzard's Senior VP of Product Development, Frank Pearce, revealed that the developer is pondering releasing the hotly anticipated add-on via digital distribution, saying it's "something we're talking about".
Although nothing's set in stone, the availability of the original WoW client via digital distribution in North America (also under consideration for Europe) suggests that Blizzard will follow this route with The Burning Crusade - although Pearce explained that relationships with traditional retail are "really important" to the developer.
We can but wait and see what it decides.
But what's your own opinion on The Burning Crusade being made available via digital distribution? Would you opt to buy the expansion that way, or would you rather purchase a nice shiny boxed copy from your local games emporium? Shout your thoughts in the comment field below.

September 21st, 2006, 20:37 Posted By: wraggster
Paradox Interactive has signed a publishing deal with developer Nival Interactive, the result of which is an upcoming line of real-time strategy games based on World War II. The first game, Frontline: Kursk, is due out early next year and will focus on what remains to be the largest tank battle in history.
Nival, the developer of Heroes of Might and Magic V, will work with N-Game Studios, and the two companies will draw upon the experience of working on the Blitzkrieg series of World War II RTS games. However, for Frontline: Kursk, the company will introduce a new 3D graphics engine that will let you destroy everything in your path. The game will also feature a large number of historical military units that fought in the 1943 battle. It will also feature a single-player campaign with a strategic layer that lets you determine your missions, as well as multiplayer support for up to eight players. For more on Frontline: Kursk, we caught up with Nival producer Ilya Stremovsky.
GameSpot: While many people know of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, not as many are familiar with Kursk. Could you describe the significance of the battle and why you chose to build a game around it?
Ilya Stremovsky: The Kursk battle was one of the key battles on the Eastern Front. It's like the Battle of the Bulge of the Eastern Front. The German army tried to encircle the salient on the front line, where Soviet troops had advanced some 150 kilometers into German-controlled territory. Had they been successful, they would have trapped one-fifth of the Red Army troops and gained a great strategic position for future battles. The Soviet army took a defensive stance and aimed to bleed the attacking troops. This decision proved to be successful, and this battle of monumental proportions provided yet more proof that a German victory on the Eastern Front was unlikely. It is of significant importance, since the newest German tanks, such as the Panthers, were thrown into the battle and should have raised their odds. The culmination of the battle has become known as the "largest tank battle in history."
GS: Tell us a bit more about the gameplay. It sounds like there will be some kind of strategic layer where you will choose your missions and then there will be the real-time battles themselves. What will you do in the game as a player? Will you be able to play from the perspective of both sides in the campaign?
IS: In the strategic layer, the player will be able to see the situation on the front line and select the next mission. Once in a real-time battle, the player will command his or her troops in different episodes of the Kursk battle. The number of units under the player's command is proportionally scaled to the number of units that took part in the real battle. The objectives will mirror the real objectives of each episode and the progress of the battle. There are two campaigns in the game, and the player will be able to play for each side, with both of them having their successes and victories over the course of the larger battle.
GS: What's the scope of the game? Does it focus just around the Battle of Kursk, or will it cover larger periods of the war?
IS: Yes, the game focuses on the various episodes of the Kursk battle. This gives us a unique opportunity to depict the event on a very detailed level, the same level that an actual World War II commander would have been acting on.
GS: How realistic will the game be? Will you attempt to model an accurate simulation of combat, or will the gameplay lean more toward the traditional real-time strategy formula of rock-paper-scissors units, where every unit has a primary counter? How many units will be in the game--give us some examples?
IS: The tradition of the Blitzkrieg games is to be as authentic as possible. We use real-world technical parameters of the units--their strengths and weaknesses. The mix of the units at the player's disposal reflects the real composition of troops on the battlefield. The players will have to make their decisions based on the real starting conditions and making full use of the real-world advantages.
In total, there are about 120 units on both sides available to the player. The units that were actually taking part in the battle will be present. Among them, players will find obvious celebrities like Tiger and Panther tanks, Marder II mobile assault guns from the German side, as well as T-34 and Katyusha rockets from the Soviet side.
GS: Tell us more about the new Enigma engine that powers the game. Is this a vast improvement over your previous technology? What sort of features does it support?
IS: The original Enigma engine was developed for the Blitzkrieg II series, and this was an important technological step, as it allowed us to break through the 3D dimension. We've improved the original engine, adding visual effects like shaders and lightings. That helped us to make the game more realistic, and it creates new depths of battle atmosphere. The environments will certainly be destructible; almost all the objects can be destroyed, including buildings and trees. The improved engine makes the game even more interactive.
GS: Finally, there are a lot of World War II strategy games out there, so how do you think Frontline: Kursk will stand out from the competition? Will it be the battles, more integration of the strategic layer, or something else?
IS: The strongest points of Frontline: Kursk are the historical precision and attention to detail, combined with the full 3D graphics that present the player with a beautiful but also authentic view of the battlefield.

CCP, Eve Online's Icelandic developer, has stated its ongoing commitment to the space-race MMO, assuring the game's 300,000 global players that there's no end in sight for content updates and development of the title.
"We release two big expansions a year, and we're going to continue doing that," said company CMO Magnus Bergsson at the Nordic Game event in Malmö, Sweden, yesterday. "We're extremely dedicated to continue having Eve evolve throughout the years. There are no plans to stop developing Eve, because the concept of space travel is timeless. It doesn't go out of fashion."
Those addicted to flying around in the ether pretending to "be in" a galaxy far, far away will also be heartened to know CCP is well on track to deliver its latest free content update.
Our next big release is coming before the end of the year," said Bergsson. "When exactly I don't know: maybe in two months."
The specific content of the upgrade is still under wraps, however, but Magnus promised you won't have long to wait.
"There are of course a huge amount of things we have yet to add to our game which are quite interesting," he said. "We're going to be announcing many of them at our fan-fest in November. We're going to be making some serious announcements. Are you interested in being there?"
Course we are, Magnus. Iceland's supposed to be nice this time of year. Whether we make the trip or not, we'll be sure to bring you all the news from the land of fire and ice. And Eve Online players can rest assured that their favourite waste of time won't be going anywhere soon.
"It's very stable and it just keeps on growing," Bergsson said.

Flagship Studios has opened the gates of hell and spewing forth from the portal are new screenshots from the developer's action-RPG, Hellgate: London. We recognise - just about, - the British Museum in one of the pics and, as far as we're aware, this is the first time we've seen one of London's famous locations as depicted in the game.
For anyone recently emerging from under a rock, Hellgate: London combines FPS and RPG gameplay and thrusts players into a Big Smoke under attack from demonic hordes. The phrase "infinite replayability" is being attached to the title, with the promise of dynamically generated levels (although famous locations will remain static, as it were) items, enemies and events - so a bit like Diablo. You play a hi-tech Templar Knight character who, as well being a wielder of magic, is additionally kitted out with hefty firepower, armour and plenty of skills to battle Hell's forces.
Accompanying the new screenshots that we've uploaded here is brief word on weapons and devices you'll be employing - only names have been provided, but we can make an educated guess at what the Beetlebore and Electric Eel Launcher are all about.
Apparently, there'll be "dozens" of new Templar shields and swords to get hands on too and we've even been provided with brief descriptions of a couple of the skills characters will get as they progress through the game: Templar Shield Bash damages and stuns enemies; Cabalist Transformation allows you to metamorph into a Zombie and raise an army of undead to serve in the battle for man's survival.
That's your lot for now, but no doubt we'll have more on Hellgate: London soon.

It's almost time for strategy gamers to put their latest plans for virtual-world domination into action. Two empire-building PC games have wrapped up development and will be on store shelves over the next month.
Caesar IV, the first installment of the city-building franchise since 1998's Caesar III, lets gamers play governor and nurture a Roman province into one of the empire's strongest city-states. There are more than 100 buildings to erect, dozens of tradable goods to develop a bustling economy, and 75 unique citizens to interact with.
The WarChiefs expansion for the popular Age of Empires III adds three playable Native American civilizations--the Iroquois Confederation, the Sioux Nation, and the Aztec Empire--to the real-time strategy game. New maps and units will also be thrown in to the mix, as will a new single-player campaign.
Age of Empires: The WarChiefs is rated T for Teen and will retail for $29.99 when it is released on October 17.

Massively multiplayer golf? Yes, you heard us right. Purporting to already have a million players worldwide, subscription-free MMO golf title Shot-Online hits retail stores this week. The game aims to combine the social aspects of MMO games with a serious golf mechanic, though its cartoony graphic style implies a less-than-serious approach.
From an outside view, this just looks like a golf game with a bit of social infrastructure slapped on; rankings, communication and levelling your character make a potentially dull sports game something that's potentially engrossing. It isn't true novelty -- the idea of ranking and progression in sports games, as well as competitive multiplayer, date back a way -- but at least it's not elves.

Chris Taylor, acclaimed creator of Total Annihilation and Dungeon Siege, exclusively told CVG he's interested in bringing his latest epic RTS game, Supreme Commander to consoles, in a recent interview with CVG.
When asked if he thought Gas Powered Games' upcoming RTS creation would work well on consoles, Taylor responded saying: "absolutely and we're going to explore that for sure," making chances of a console-bound Supreme Commander likely.
No further hints were offered on a possible console-transformation in the interview, though putting on our big hat of speculation, we reckon that the Xbox 360 version of Battle for Middle-Earth II may have helped to sway Gas Powered Games' decision on a console port.
Excellent news for console owners then, if indeed the 'Commander does make his way over to the console battleground. GPG's latest is shaping up as one of the biggest RTS releases of 2007, and for console owners to miss out on its stellar air, sea and giant-spider-mech battles would be a terrible shame indeed.
We'll let you know if any official word hits on a console version,

Rejoice by quaffing a flagon of mead at the arrival of new screenshots from Medieval II: Total War, The Creative Assembly's latest and shiniest RTS that looks so damn good we might just want to have its babies. Just check out the armour on those knights, banners flapping in the wind, arcing arrow fire and messy melee combat - nice.
Enjoy the screens!

Guild Wars developer ArenaNet is going preview bonkers at the end of the month with a massive event to preview Nightfall, its latest chapter in the MMOG saga.
Running from September 22 (07:01pm GMT) to September 25 (6:59am GMT), the preview event is open to every man, woman, cat, dog and amoeba in the world who'd like to play. Participants will experience previews of Nightfall's new environments, missions and battle arenas. In addition, players will get to create Nightfall-specific characters from the six core professions as well as the two new Nightfall professions, the Dervish and the Paragon, and to try out new Nightfall skills

And there's more: so we're told, "The entire Istani province of the new realm Elona will be open for player exploration, and players will be able to view the first Nightfall in-game cinematics. In addition, two new arenas will make their debut, the Sunspear Arena and Churranu Island."
On top of all that lot, apparently a number of European gaming magazines are to feature an access key for an exclusive, in-game Gray Giant miniature: "The Gray Giant will be useable during the World Preview Event, and then may be reactivated with a Guild Wars Nightfall account upon release."
More information on all this can be found on http://eu.guildwars.com.
Guild Wars Nightfall launches on October 27.

E-tailer lists RPG add-on, then swiftly removes it - but not before it was spotted
An e-tailer may have let a small cat out the bag on a forthcoming expansion pack for Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
According to a report on GameSpot, a listing for Knights of the White Stallion for the PC version of the RPG appeared on GameStop within the last 24 hours. Priced $19.99, the expansion had a November 21 release date attached to it. However, the listing was apparently removed shortly after GameSpot fired a query on the expansion off to Bethesda.
It would appear then - and here we're don our good old hat of speculation - that Bethesda had a quiet word with GameStop and asked politely that the listing be taken down. But whether that would be down to total inaccuracy on the e-tailer's part or the developer conducting a damage control exercise, we don't know.
It is, though, highly likely that an expansion for the RPG is in the works, although if we saw one released on November 21 we'd eat our chainmail vambraces. All we can do is wait and see if Knights of the White Stallion is indeed mounting up and riding into Oblivion in the future.

Latest footage from the PC role-playing game which is out next month
It's time to sink our teeth - or eyes, we guess - into a new trailer showcasing Piranha Bytes' PC RPG Gothic 3, which is putting a last minute edge to its blade in preparation for next month's debut.
Running for just over five minutes, the trailer's a walkthrough-style affair with a Piranha employee talking about the game, improvements over Gothic 2 and gameplay mechanics. Once again we're impressed by the visual quality of Gothic 3, which features quite beautiful environments, but of course you may have to spend three million pounds on your PC to get it to look as good as we're seeing here.
Anyway, definitely a game to look out for if you're a RPG fan, it seems. Enjoy the trailer.
