Vice president and general manager of Codemasters Online Gaming (COG), David Solari, has revealed a target of over a million players for the division's upcoming Lord of the Ring Online (LOTRO) title and admitted intentions to compete directly with Blizzard's genre-leading World of Warcraft.
"I think the goal [for LOTRO] would be over a million subscribers in the west," said Solari, speaking at the COG LiVE event in Warwick, UK, yesterday. "World of Warcraft is such a benchmark now, but if something's going to do it it's going to be a Lord of the Rings brand that lets people play in that environment and experience that content. It's got to have probably the best chance of competing with it."
LOTRO, developed by US developer Turbine, is scheduled for a Q4 release. Demoed in fully playable form at the event by executive producer Jeff Steefel, the initial release is to include the content from the first Lord of the Rings book, The Fellowship of the Ring, with the rest of the trilogy to be added as the game evolves. Turbine holds the rights to produce MMO content based on Tolkien's novels, as opposed to the recent New Line movies.
LOTRO is the most mainstream part of a quartet of titles from COG in 2006, the rest of which includes Korean import Archlord from NHN and the recently released duo of Turbine-developed Dungeons & Dragons Online and CCR Corporation's RF Online.
"Lord of the Rings is a pretty all encompassing MMO with a great brand behind it. So that's a generally more competitive game," Solari added. "All the games are quite different, which is what we decided to go for."

Turbine's inviting MMO fans to try out Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach for seven days free of charge.
The free trial, which you can sign-up for it trial.ddo.com, allows you to build up a character for seven days and then lets you continue with that character in the full game if you decide to buy it.
D&DO, released in March, is a heavily instanced massively-multiplayer effort in which team-play - specifically, playing the role of your chosen character - is of paramount import.
Experience is accrued by besting entire dungeons, rather than by simply knocking off as many enemies as possible - although combat itself is a bit more involved than the usual click-auto-die routine prevalent in games of its type - and while soloing is virtually impossible for more than a couple of training missions, we reckoned it was well worth persisting with a trio of allies.
The seven-day trial's a good way to find out if you agree - and to find out how the game runs on your PC, which our reviewer felt might be an issue for those with mid-range hardware

It's just like a school history lesson this morning; we're throwing our stationary around to annoy the editor, scribbling crude drawings on our desks and there's some big pictures of Roman coliseums littering our screens. All we need now is some White Lightning and a trip to the park and the transformation will be complete.
If you haven't guessed yet the game we're ogling at is CivCity: Rome, a city-building sim 'inspired' by Sid Meier's classic Civilization series. Apparently CivCity will let you tinker with hundreds of different buildings essential to growing your mighty imperial city, including legionnaire forts, amphitheatres, weapon workshops and gladiatorial schools. No sign of ion cannons or war factories yet, but we'll keep our fingers crossed anyway.
CivCity: Rome is due for arrival in the summer. We're off to throw flour and eggs at the PE teacher.

Gaming Steve — "the man with the game information" — has the scoop on Blizzard's plans to dramatically enhance Battlegrounds, World of Warcraft's PvP mode. The first update, expected in patch 1.12 or 1.13, will effectively link 16 realms per Battleground server, in turn speeding up queues and opening up the playing field for inter-realm action.
But Steve reports that Battlegrounds will undergo its biggest makeover with the release of The Burning Crusade expansion. Players can look forward to features like worldwide rankings, tournaments, and ladders when the expansion drops later this year.

Following widespread rumors, Electronic Arts has made it official: Command & Conquer 3 is coming to PCs. When the game ships in 2007, it will be the first new installment in the venerable real-time strategy series since 2003's Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour.
However, unlike Zero Hour, the newest Command & Conquer continues the storyline of the original game. That plot put players in the midst of a fictional near-future conflict that pitted a peacekeeping alliance, the Global Defense Initiative (GDI), against an evil paramilitary organization, the Brotherhood of Nod.
Subtitled Tiberium Wars, Command & Conquer 3 picks up years after the last game in the timeline, 2002's Command & Conquer Renegade, left off. Set in the year 2047, it sees the GDI trying to stop the spread of Tiberium, a toxic extraterrestrial mineral that is spreading across the planet like a fungus. Having far less scruples, the Brotherhood of Nod begins a war to protect Tiberium, which is its prime resource of energy. (There are also unconfirmed reports of a third race being in the game, but no mention of it was made in EA's release.)
Gameplay-wise, EA promises that Tiberium Wars will have an extensive single-player campaign that will feature base-building, unit-combining, and high-tech-weaponry wielding. Multiplayer-wise, the game will offer voice over IP, integrated clan support, and several "new spectator modes" for online competitions.
GameSpot will have more information on Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars as it becomes available.

VU Games' American massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft has been phenomenally popular in Korea (too popular in some cases), and now the publisher is hoping to re-create that success in reverse. Early next year, VU Games will bring the Korean hit MMO basketball game Freestyle Street Basketball (no relation to Acclaim's ill-fated Freestyle Street Soccer) to American audiences early next year.
As can be inferred by the title, Freestyle Street Basketball trades in the swords and sorcery for slams and jams. Instead of roaming the countryside looking for dragons and ogres to gang up on, players hit the hardcourt with their customized characters and form pickup basketball games.
Given that the game has an unusual MMO theme, VU Games is looking to market it to an unusual MMO audience with an unproven business model. Freestyle Street is designed with mass appeal and quick play sessions to target casual gamers, and it will be supported not by subscription fees, but by the increasingly noticeable trend of micropayments. While there are long-term goals and the ability to level up characters over time, players can also give their character a unique style by purchasing fashions, music, and new skills for their character with experience points and real-world money.
Originally developed by Korea-based JC Entertainment, Freestyle Street Basketball is set to release in North America in the first quarter of 2007. It will be released under VU Games' new Sierra Online label.

April 20th, 2006, 17:26 Posted By: wraggster
As true-blue RTS fans, we almost fell out of our chairs when news of the next Command & Conquer game reached our ears. Thankfully, this afternoon EA Games has officially blown the lid off our best-kept secret, and we can share our excitement with you across this page.
Titled Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars the next C&C entry returns to the long-forgotten Tiberium universe, which means that GDI, Nod and dodgy FMV cut-scenes will all be reprised in the latest C&C entry.
The action kicks off in 2047 where tiberium - a nasty self-replicating alien substance - has an even stronger grip on Earth's war-torn surface. The Global Defence Initiative (GDI) is working hard to reverse tiberium's planetary spread, but Kane and a secretly regrouping Brotherhood of Nod are plotting in the shadows.
"We have been waiting to reveal this game for quite some time and are thrilled to bring the series back to where it all began," said C&C creator Louis Castle. "The Tiberium universe is a personal favourite of mine, and this saga's new direction will prove to be a worthy addition to one of the most celebrated RTS franchises."
According to EA, Tiberium Wars will feature mobile bases, combinable units and powerful ion storms cropping-up across the battlefield. In the multiplayer arena we can expect full clan support, voice-over IP and new spectator modes which apparently let you play the game a bit like a sport.
More interesting revelations are offered in PC Gamer (US) which has C&C3 loving plastered across the front of its latest issue. A number of graphically-pleasing screenshots reveal an art-style similar to that of the original CnC, with units like buggies, Orcas and gigantic Mammoth Tanks all confirmed for revival. Also revealed in the mag is an all-new third faction which EA have so-far kept shrouded in mystery. Could the third side be the alien army originally slotted for Tiberian Sun? No-doubt we wont have long to find out.
We'll have more Command & Conquer 3 details - and hopefully screenshots - when they hit our desks soon. In the meantime, cast your eyes over the first image and logo lovingly plastered on the right. C&C is due for release next year.

April 19th, 2006, 16:50 Posted By: wraggster
Square Enix has confirmed that it's working on a new MMORPG for PS3 and PC via a comment from the producer of Final Fantasy XI, Hiromichi Tanaka.
"As we work on Final Fantasy XI, we're currently working on a new MMORPG targeting Windows Vista and PS3," Tanaka told Impress Watch recently. Furthermore, it's a game that Square Enix hopes to release worldwide.
That may sound a little strange, given that Square Enix has the clout and the rep to release its games wherever it wants, but Final Fantasy XI has had a rather muddled life - it never saw release on PS2 in Europe, took two years to reach the US and will be some four years old when it reaches Xbox 360 this Friday.
Square Enix has some immense plans for unveiling a new title at E3, and this could be it. Stay tuned...

April 19th, 2006, 16:47 Posted By: wraggster
Source: Magazine scans posted at a variety of places, including the 3D Realms forums.
The official story: Neither Electronic Arts nor PC Gamer had responded to requests for comment as of press time.
What we heard: It seems like advance copies of print magazines are pre-empting game announcements all over the world. Yesterday, it was the British Official Xbox Magazine blowing the lid off F.E.A.R. for the Xbox 360, much to the chagrin of PC gaming purists.
Many of the same people who scoffed at F.E.A.R. being ported to consoles got a pleasant surprise today. That's when scans began to circulate of what is almost certainly the cover of next month's PC Gamer magazine.
Like most covers, the one pictured isn't shy about telling onlookers about its contents. In huge letters in the middle, it trumpets "Command & Conquer 3" underneath the words "New race, new story, new war!"
So is the shot actual confirmation of the C&C's existence? Well, if it's a fake, it's a clever fake. The format is exactly the same as that of the magazine's cover style, as can be seen on its Web site. Besides using the same fonts as previous issues, it also has the correct issue number, 149.
While official confirmation still hasn't been received, there was little question that a new Command & Conquer would come along eventually. With real-time strategy titles among the best-selling PC Games, there was much speculation Electronic Arts would eventually bring back the storied series. Never mind the fact that EA never met a franchise it didn't like. In 1998, it bought Westwood Studios, which was folded into EALA in 2003, primarily to get ahold of the Command & Conquer license.
Today's leak appears to confirm whispers amongst the development community that the C&C franchise was being resurrected after going on hiatus after September 2003's Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour. Indeed, EA's recent release of Command & Conquer The First Decade, a compilation of 12 C&C games, now appears to be a marketing move to restoke interest in the franchise.
Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus--expect more at E3.

A third anticipated - and expected - instalment in the Command & Conquer RTS series has been confirmed by way of a preview in PC Gamer magazine (US), it appears. We've not seen the magazine for ourselves, but scans of the cover with "Command + Conquer 3" splatted across IN VERY LARGE WRITING have materialised on the internet. Various C&C fans are adamant the cover is legit - we'll take their word for it.
EA has yet to release any official announcement on Command & Conquer 3, but with the cat now seemingly out the bag we're guessing it won't be too long before we get word on the sequel from the publisher. As soon as we hear more, we'll let you know.

April 18th, 2006, 16:54 Posted By: wraggster
World of Warcraft publisher Blizzard Entertainment may be reconsidering its relationship with its Chinese partner The9 Interactive, according to a statement made by the company late last week.
In a press release issued on Thursday, Blizzard said it is "actively exploring and discussing cooperation opportunities and further expansion of its business with local potential partners for mainland China".
That's despite an existing agreement with The9, which currently handles World of Warcraft's distribution and infrastructure in the region.
The company said it had "invited" The9 to "negotiate" the forthcoming release of World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade, which is due out in China in 2007.
Although there's no direct suggestion Blizzard will sever its ties with The9, which it called "the most talented MMO operator in China" when it announced the agreement last June, the release implies the Chinese firm is by no means a shoe-in as far as Blizzard's future plans are concerned.
Last month, it emerged that Chinese players of the hugely successful MMOG have staged protests over what is perceived as poor customer service and overloaded servers for the game.
Future details on Blizzard's plans for China "will be revealed at a later date", the release stated.
Last July, Blizzard announced that it had surpassed 1.5 million paying Chinese customers, with the Chinese customer base thought to contribute significantly to the figure of five million worldwide players announced at the end of 2005.

I don't know how I missed it but last week Bruce Woodcock updated his highly informative site, MMOGChart.com, for the first time in months. His data only goes out to late last year, but he promises another update soon. From the Edge Online blurb: "The charts, neatly broken into separate genre-giants, mid-size, and more-modest categories (largely due to World of Warcraft's unprecedented population squelching its competitors below), show at first glance few surprising results. As expected, World of Warcraft dominates the charts, with the Lineage pair coming in beneath, Final Fantasy XI continuing to gain ground, and UK indie-developed RuneScape coming in at a very respectable 5th, well above several blockbusters below.

April 18th, 2006, 02:50 Posted By: wraggster
Burgeoning MMO market attracts Korea-based game creators and now an ancillary market; Technoblood tests the waters in Nippon.
Japan is in the midst of a PC-gaming renaissance. Massively multiplayer online PC games are increasingly popular in the previously console-centric country, and now the audience is large enough to create a new market: selling ancillary products to MMO game providers.
Software company Technoblood, founded in Korea but now with offices in both Korea and Japan, has announced plans to target this market with an offering for MMO companies that want to leave their antihacking efforts to a specialist.
Technoblood's software is called nProtect GameGuard and will launch in Japan this week.
Originally developed in Korea by security software specialist INCA Internet, it's already in use in games like Lineage II and Sukatto Golf Pangya. When installed on a user's PC, nProtect GameGuard performs a range of antihacking and security measures including blocking auto-mouse and macro programs and blocking access to and manipulation of the game client software.
Technoblood also plans to open a Hacking Report Center this week. This new group will provide outsourced customer service, allowing MMO operators to concentrate on building their games rather than policing them.
It's particularly interesting to note the Korean connection. nProtect GameGuard, like most of Japan's most popular MMOs, comes from their neighbors across the Korea Strait (the two most popular online games in Japan are Ragnarok Online and Sukatto Golf Pangya, both from Korea).
Korea has been a hotbed of MMO development for years, leading to a Darwinian market in which only top-notch products survive. The lack of strong native competition in Japan's PC-nascent gaming market makes expansion there attractive to Korean developers and publishers--a trend toward Korean imports that could get stronger in the future, both for games and for the kind of ancillary software that Technoblood plans to introduce this week.

Decisions over how long burning rivers should stay aflame for can have a profound impact upon the atmosphere and enjoyment factor of a virtual landscape. This, and many other decisions like it, is how Richard Garriott spends his time these days -- as executive producer for Tabula Rasa, he has to help craft a variety of planets.
World-building isn't a new hobby; fantasy authors and tabletop GMs have been facing questions like this for years, and often throwaway comments cause a lot of trouble for those making film adaptations or video game versions of the world. Creating a world from scratch for gaming means that all the important questions need to be answered at once, however, or the players will ask them. It doesn't stop at the design stage; game companies are providing governments, too, by creating laws and rules on the fly.
Universes created primarily by users, like the world of Second Life, still operate within boundaries and constraints set down by the developers and providers of that world. If the Metaverse idea is really the future of online gaming, there's going to be a lot of influence exerted by some early decisions, just as early networking protocols and standards still influence today's Internet.

Ubisoft and Nival have released a demo of Heroes of Might & Magic V, which includes three playable missions, two races, and the online duel mode. The download is 685MB and has some hefty recommended requirements. It hasn't exactly been a pleasant ride for series newcomer Nival, so it will be interesting to see if they've turned the corner. Let us know what you think about the game. The expected launch date for Heroes V is May 23.

Disney has announced that PC MMO Pirates of the Caribbean Online will go on show at E3 next month - but it won't be in the shops until 2007.
POTCO was due to launch alongside the new film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, this summer. But now it'll launch next year, at the same time as the third film in the series, instead.
The game will let you create your very own pirate character and interact with characters such as Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Keira Knightley. You can expect "hundreds" of customisation options, all manner of buried treasure and lots of scary pirate skellingtons. And a monthly subscription fee.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online will make its debut at E3, so look out for more news then.

IGN's Dan Adams is the kind of guy who lives and breathes real-time strategy games. This is evident in his comprehensive overview of the genre, where he discusses everything from the DOS-based Ancient Art of War to today's top sellers and beyond. For RTS newbs and veterans alike, this article can serve as either a fascinating introduction, or a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Over the past decade, consoles have attempted to capitalize on the genre's PC popularity by porting games like Warcraft, Warhammer, and Command & Conquer (with mixed results). There have also been console exclusives such as Goblin Commander, Pikmin, Kessen, and the last two Kingdom Under Fire titles. However, these offerings haven't enjoyed the success of their PC contemporaries, which is somewhat ironic, given the console roots of RTS classics, Herzog Zwei and Dune II (also a PC title). EA is hoping for permanent crossover success when they bring The Battle for Middle-earth 2 to the Xbox 360 later this year.
What are your favorite RTS games of all time? If you haven't already, would you consider playing strategy titles on a console?
