MMORPG.com has a piece talking with Daron Stinnett, producer for the preproduction-phase MMOG Star Trek Online. They discuss the decision to only include the Federation in the game's launch, the gameplay both on starships and planetside, and the many ideas still being nailed down for the title. From the article: "The uniforms are a good example of an area where we've needed to evolve the look of Star Trek to support the game. Star Trek uniforms from the shows tend to be very subtle in their variation, which of course works when you're filming close enough to make the actors themselves the stars of the show. But for an MMO, It's well understood that giving players the ability to customize their look as their character evolves is an important part of any MMO as is the ability to recognize player rank and specialty from a distance. So we have created new uniforms that are still very recognizable as Star Trek, but with recognition and customization features that will work well in our game world."

World of Warcraft's popularity helps boost MMO and casual gaming to a $2 billion international payday; console games to take 29 percent of OL market by 2011.
Whatever you think of World of Warcraft, there's no denying that it has reshaped the gaming landscape. As of last month, Blizzard Entertainment's massively multiplayer online role-playing game had over 6 million subscribers, making the population of its virtual world larger than many European countries.
The latest evidence of WOW's influence comes in the form of a report from DFC Intelligence. The San Diego-based game-industry research company has just issued a report which says that "subscription revenue from online games was $2 billion in 2005." WOW came out in November 2004 and has been among the top three games in DFC-rival NPD Group's weekly PC-bestseller list since it hit the market.
DFC cited WOW's publisher, Vivendi Universal-owned Blizzard Entertainment, as being a major factor behind the rise of MMORPG revenue in the US. That said, it correctly pointed out that currently "over 50 percent of online-game-subscription revenue in 2005 came from Asian countries outside Japan, most notably South Korea, China, and Taiwan."
In particular, it heaped praise on one of Blizzard's most bitter foes. "The Asian market has created some significant new players, led by South Korean company NCsoft, which had over $300 million in online-game revenue in 2005," read the report. Over the past few years, NCsoft has been waging an aggressive campaign to court US MMORPG players with titles such as City of Heroes and Guild Wars.
Despite its initial Asia-boosting, DFC said that the Western hemisphere is catching up. "North America is expected to pass Asia in subscription revenue, accounting for 35 percent of online-game-subscription revenue in 2011," read the report. At that point, the company estimates the worldwide-online-gaming pie as being worth $6.8 billion--$3.06 billion of which will be produced by the US and Canada.
However, DFC concedes that MMOGs aren't the only factor behind the rise of online gaming. It also said online casual gaming was a major factor and singled out Electronic Arts' Pogo games subsidiary--which topped 1 million subscribers last November--as a successful example.
Though online gaming is currently a mostly PC domain, DFC's report says that won't last. "In 2011, it is forecasted that 29 percent of worldwide subscription revenue will be from console systems," it predicted.

Exanimus is an online massively multiplayer game created in a world where the dead live and roam the earth eating the flesh of the living. While most of the world is dead, there are small pockets of survivors that exist in barricaded cities across the globe. Players of Exanimus will have the option of playing as a living survivor or as one of the dead roaming the earth. Exanimus will allow players to experience a MMO based in a horror genre by creating a dark and visually "intense" environment. Exanimus is expected to be rated "Mature" and not intended for anyone under the age of 18.
Exanimus is currently in pre-production, but we are working right now to build our website for everyone to visit and learn more about our game. It is our hope to integrate our community heavily in the development of the game, so we invite everyone to keep checking in for news and updates. We have many surprises in store and hope everyone will be as excited as we are for this new type of MMO.
Sweet Zombie Justice! What are these creatures? I wonder how many ambulance drivers I will need to get to my next level. This sounds cool in so very many ways.

The MMOG market seems to attract more and more gaming companies, willing to invest large capitals with the hope and objective to repay the effort and getting at least a part of the wonderful income that Blizzard, SOE, NCSoft and the others are getting from monthly fees.
In this money driven sector, something different is rising. We interviewed Robert Lee, Project Leader of Etherea: Dark Genesis , a fantasy based MMORPG developed by a team of gamers, with the only purpose of creating something fun to play, something to be proud of, without being conditioned by investors and companies.

If Tricia Helfer and Grace Park aren't enough to make you tune into the Battlestar Galactica season finale this weekend, then it's doubtful the new D&D Online commercials will have much influence. All the same, Turbine has announced they will air DDO ads three times during the special 90-minute episode on Friday night, starting at 10 PM Eastern on Sci-Fi. Too bad they didn't have Maxim back in '78 during the original Galactica. Maren Jensen was a hottie!

In its latest move to expand into the American market, Korean publisher NCsoft has announced a brand-new deal with a brand-new studio. Today, the company's Austin, Texas office it has entered into an agreement with Spacetime Studios, based in the same city.
If you're wondering what Spacetime Studios is, that's understandable. The indie shop is a new operation "composed of a core team with previous leadership roles on successful franchises such as Privateer, Wing Commander, and Star Wars Galaxies," according to a statement issued by the company. It was cofounded by Gary Gattis, who was senior producer of the Galaxies expansion Jump to Lightspeed.
Given Spacetime's background and NCsoft's specialty, it's no surprise that their first collaboration will be a sci-fi massively multiplayer online role-playing game. While no specific title or launch window were mentioned, NCsoft Robert Garriott did praise the developer's "proven track record in creating games in the space genre." For his part, Gattis gave NCsoft props for giving his team "the freedom to develop a game that we have been dreaming of doing for years."

Boycott threatened over poor service; meanwhile, EQ2 leaves Chinese market
Chinese players of World of Warcraft are threatening a boycott of the game over poor customer service received from Blizzard and local operators The9, reports Chinese news agency Interfax.
The enormously popular game, which has well over one and a half million players in China, has apparently been suffering from the fallout from its own success - with players forced to wait in hour-long queues before entering the game world, and unexpected server outages which disrupt play.
The issues aren't entirely confined to China, of course - players in Europe and North America have also reported issues with service levels in World of Warcraft, while Blizzard has constantly reassured the game's community that it is working to resolve the ongoing problems presented by the rapid growth of the in-game population.
However, the threat of a boycott in China is particularly worrying for the firm, since gamers there don't buy monthly subscriptions - instead, they buy game cards allowing them a certain number of hours of play, which means that any time they're not playing, Blizzard and The9 are losing money.
Speaking to Interfax, The9's public relations manager Zhang Heng stressed that the firm is taking the complaints seriously. "We should first collect data and evidence, and will work together with Blizzard to look into this accident and evaluate the loss," he said. "We will provide compensation to those players involved based on the result of the investigation."
Meanwhile, Sony Online Entertainment has announced that it is to end its Chinese operations for massively multiplayer title EverQuest II, which was being supported in the region by Gamania. The beta period for the game in China ended on March 1st, and on March 30th, all Chinese accounts will be moved to the US servers of the game.

Warcry has a short article with impressions from someone who was asked to participate in a Star Wars Galaxies focus group. The moderator evidently presented several options, and the group responded. From the article: "The final question/topic was whether we'd choose any one of the pamphlet outlines to add to the game, or if we'd prefer for them to work on bringing things back that were taken out. As soon as he was done talking, the group said 'Rollback' almost as one. The moderator seemed like he saw that coming, because he'd probably heard the term a dozen times already from the other groups.

Hi all if you are reading this newspost you are on the new server, im sure if you have visited this site regulary you will have noticed that the server has been slow especially on days when we push well over 2000 online at one time.
With Massive thanks to Martin64 our server admin we are on a much faster server, so the problems of the past should be well and truly over.

Last week i opened 2 new sites that will hopefully bring more people to the network in the form of a MMORPG site and a Real Time Strategy Site.
I am personally a massive fan of RTS games but like all the sites and forums, its the people who visit them and chat that make the network what it is.
Thanks for visiting a site that started just over 2 years ago and quickly grew as i brought my other sites over to make a network of sites and one with a name thats easy to remember, namely DCEmu - The Homebrew and Gaming Network.

After procuring the literary rights to The Lord of the Rings, EA was hoping to breathe some new life into its prized gaming franchise. However, their first attempt resulted in the disappointing Lord of the Rings: Tactics for the PSP.
Last year's Battle for Middle-earth was a moderate success, and the new content inspired by the novels has allowed the dwarves, elves, and goblins to join the party in the sequel. There are also new maps and modes to explore, as well as some moderate enhancements to the graphics and gameplay.
So far, the results are consistent with last year's effort, giving EA another solid entry in the RTS category.
IGN (90/100) enjoyed the sequel, but cautions the more casual RTS fan who might be expecting the simplicity of the first game: "There's a lot to experience with this entry into the series including three new factions, a redesigned base building mode, some awesome new powers, terrific improvements to the engine, a tighter campaign mode, and both skirmish and War of the Ring."
GameSpot (83/100) really enjoyed one of the new modes: "The good news is that things get really interesting once you play with the new War of the Ring mode. Essentially, War of the Ring links all the real-time battles to an overarching strategic campaign, but one that's deeper than the superficial strategic mode in the original Battle for Middle-earth."
Yahoo! Games (80/100) found the battle AI lacking, but raved about the game's presentation: "It's a beautiful-looking game, brought to life with spectacular maps, excellent models, and a real flair for visual design from opening sequence to game-over screen. You'll be spending most of your time zoomed out, but you'll still enjoy watching your troops stomp about Middle Earth causing havoc."
GameSpy (70/100) was even less impressed in the AI department: "Both unit AI and pathfinding can be extremely troublesome, particularly when it comes to the game's naval battles. Not only is your navy incompetent, they also seem unable to avoid friendly fire. And the problems extend to your land-based forces as well. I can't count the number of times I saw my boys come under enemy fire and not respond."

Platform selected for Stargate Worlds MMORPG
Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment has licensed BigWorld's client/server technology suite as the platform for development of its forthcoming MGM licensed MMO title based on the Stargate franchise.
BigWorld's MMOG solution provides developers and operators with a range of tools, software and systems for the creation and live management of advanced massively multiplayer online games, reducing development times and costs for both pre and post production. The technology suite includes BigWorld server software, content creation pipeline, 3D client engine package, live management tools and instrumentation.
Joe Ybarra, Cheyenne Mountain's VP of product development, commented: "We evaluated many client server solutions to aid us in creating a truly breakthrough next-generation MMO, but by far the best overall solution for us is BigWorld's powerful client/server engine and streamlined production toolset. We are excited to be teaming up with them on this project."
"The Stargate universe has evolved to be one of the most recognized Sci-fi brands in recent times," added Gavin Longhurst, BigWorld's director of business development. "We are thrilled to see such an experienced and talented team as Cheyenne Mountain using BigWorld Technology to bring this visually stunning universe into the highly interactive, compelling online experience that fans and gamers want."
Stargate Worlds is the first massively multiplayer game based on the Stargate series, and promises to deliver all of the sci-fi action, exploration and conflict of both SG-1 and Atlantis series to gamers around the world. The title is currently in its early stages of development, and a release date has yet to be announced.

Sunday's online version of The Wichita Eagle has a piece on buying gold in a MMOG. The author of the piece examines what's involved, and ponders whether such an action is cheating, or just a shortcut. From the article: "Getting my gold was a snap. The smallest quantity for sale by IGE was 500 pieces for $60, about twice what I wanted to spend. I decided to go for it, however, as I simply could not abide the prospect of skinning even one more level-10 boar. Within 20 minutes, the gold appeared in my WoW character's mailbox." From a Cathode Tan post. What is your opinion: Cheating or Shortcut?

Blizzard's revealed that your World of Warcraft skills could earn you a place in the beta test for expansion The Burning Crusade. The company has unveiled plans for beta test-related contests on a handful of its public test realms. Win a contest, win a beta test slot - it's as simple as that.
Realms running the special contests will be brought online tomorrow, with contests kicking off at 9:01am CET (8:01am GMT) and remaining 'live' until March 27, 08:59pm CET (07:59pm GMT). In order to participate in the contests, your WoW account "must have been created on or before 12:01 PM PST on Monday, March 6, and must have a paid subscription active at that time", states the developer. Hurrah for time zones!
Blizzard further says that it has two different realms types for the competition: the Leveling Contest Realm and the Honor Contest Realm. The former realm hosts two different levelling contests, while the latter realm hosts a Warsong Gulch Battleground contest. Here's a breakdown of each contest from the developer:
Race to Level 50 Contest - Quality Over Quantity: Know all the sweet spots to level a character as far and fast as possible? Show us just how quick you are and level to 50 or higher on the Leveling Contest Realms! Up to 1000 [350] players from each of the major regions (US, EU, and Korea) will become winners in this contest - if there are more than 1000 who reach level 50, then those who reach 50 in the least amount of time will be chosen first, so be efficient!
Battle for Warsong Gulch: With the Honor Contest Realm level-capped at level 19, the battlegrounds are the place to be. Jump into the fray on this realm and face off against your fellow competitors - the 500 [150] players from each region (split evenly between Horde and Alliance, of course) with the highest honor totals by the end of the contest will be the winners!
Most Level-25 Characters Contest - Quantity Over Quality: We know you're out there - you don't have a level 60, but you've got a dozen level-30ish characters on your account and simply can't decide on a "main" character. This contest, which also takes place on the Leveling Contest Realms, is for you! We're looking to see how many characters you can get to level 25 in the time provided. The top 1000 [350] players from each region with the most level-25 characters on their accounts will win! Don't worry if you fill up all 10 characters slots; simply delete one of the existing characters that you just leveled to 25 and keep on going!

If there's one persistant Xbox 360 rumour that refuses to die, it's the fact that Blizzard's hugely successful World of Warcraft MMORPG will eventually find its way to Microsoft's next-gen console. Of course, with Square-Enix's Final Fantasy XI recieving a 360 debut imminently, it's clear that the platform can more than happily accomodate the complexities of MMOs. However, Blizzard's COO Paul Sams has confirmed that a 360 version of WoW is definitely not in the works - for now.
Speaking to industry mag MCV, Sams stated that, "We do not have any plans to take WoW to Xbox 360. WoW is built as a PC gaming experience. Porting PC games to console often compromises games, and we'd never allow the WoW gameplay experience to suffer."
Sams clarified further, explaining, "It's important to us that the entire player base is able to play together. Microsoft's Xbox Live architecture is very protected from all sorts of outside influence, so shared play between 360 and PC owners would be very tough. We wouldn't even consider WoW for 360 unless we could overcome that hurdle."
Despite the potential disappointment for Xbox 360 owners, it seems that Blizzard hasn't completely sworn off the platform. Sams is keen to point out that, "I wouldn't say we have no console plans. Nothing is in place at the moment, but we may be looking at something along those lines in the future."
Whether this means a whole new twist on the Warcraft MMO or something entirely different is anyone's guess. Needless to say, we'll bring you more just as soon as it parts Blizzard's famously tight lips.

Codemasters Online Gaming has just moved up a notch. With one swift announcement, the company has gone from being yet another publisher trying to establish itself in the strange and potentially lucrative world of massively multiplayer online worlds to a major player.
Codemasters has minutes ago announced that it has extended its relationship with Turbine, Inc., a “premier publisher of online subscription entertainment” (perhaps best remembered for the original Asheron’s Call) and that it has secured the exclusive European publishing and online operational rights to The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, the first and only MMORPG based on the literary works of JRR Tolkien.
The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar is currently in development at Turbine's studios in Westwood, Mass. and Codemasters Online Gaming will publish and operate the title across Europe, supporting English, French and German language versions.
In the game you can choose to be a human, elf, dwarf or one of those cutesy little hobbits, whilst you get to explore the pastoral Shire, roam the eerie Barrow Downs, visit elegant Rivendell, walk beneath the dark canopy of the Old Forest, adventure to the depths of Moria and discover many other locations fully realised from The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book in Tolkien's trilogy.
To anyone who’s ever been caught up in Tolkien’s fantasy wonderland – whether through reading the books or through seeing the recent blockbuster movies – this has got to sound appealing. Even amongst the more cynical and embittered staff here at SPOnG, there is still that memory of childlike wonder when we first read of visiting Tom Bombadil in the Shire or met the original Fellowship in The Prancing Pony in rustic Bree, as we happily rolled our 100-sided dice whilst playing the original Middle Earth Role Playing game (MERP). The memories of being roundly mocked by our peers for being dice-rolling fantasists who preferred elves to girls and were also never very good at team sports is still an issue we are working through with our therapists.
For more information on the game check out the official website right here.
Speaking to a Codies rep this morning, SPOnG was told that the beta testing on the game is likely to start later in 2006. So we guess-timate that the folks at Codemasters Online Gaming should be swimming in real, actual paper money by around, ooh, March 2007.
Rod Cousens, CEO of Codemasters, had the following to say in the announcement release: "The Lord of the Rings is one the most-suited literary pieces of fantasy to translate into a rich and rewarding MMORPG experience and it is immensely pleasing to be extending our relationship with Turbine, Inc to bring its superbly crafted work to Europe."
Whoever said fantasies and daydreaming never paid was clearly wrong. That man is grinning all the way to the bank.

Greg Atkinson of GameDaily has put together one of the first reviews of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach, and it's overwhelmingly positive. He gives kudos for the game's technical achievement, artistic style, and even the handling of real-time combat. Newbies to the MMO genre will be particularly pleased to find an abundance of useful guides and hints, as well as demonstration videos for each character class.
Greg's detailed analysis results in a 4.5 out of 5, but he doesn't really discuss what the half point deduction is for. If you're looking for second opinions from the gaming press, stay tuned for a Metareview of DDO.
