Disney Online will unveil the first images and a playable version of the never-before-seen Pirates of the Caribbean Online game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on May 10-12th in booth #1024, South Hall. This massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), slated for release in 2007, is based on the popular film franchise and will allow players to experience the world captured on screen. In the game, players will interact with Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and other characters made popular in the movie franchise, as they embark on exciting quests in search of treasure and notoriety.
Capturing the high seas and swashbuckling adventures found in both “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” players embark on quests for adventure and treasure in an effort to become the Caribbean’s most legendary pirate. Featuring hundreds of customization options, players create and customize their own pirate, form a crew, and set sail on the high seas. Along the way they learn skills and tactics from the notorious Jack Sparrow, helping them forge alliances, hunt for buried treasure, battle evil undead forces and face off against known enemies from the movie franchise.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online is in development by the Walt Disney Internet Group’s VR Studio, creators of the critically acclaimed Disney’s Toontown Online, the industry’s first MMORPG designed for kids and families. The game is being developed to appeal to a broad audience from teens to adults and will be available for a monthly subscription fee. Additional game information can be found at www.pirateslegend.com.

A few years ago, Big Huge Games scored a hit in the RTS genre with Rise of Nations, and they are currently finishing up its successor, Rise of Legends. IGN has an updated trailer that shows off some of the sequel's impressive cinematics and gameplay.
Unlike the first game, Legends abandons planet Earth for an original sci-fi/fantasy setting where magic and technology collide. In addition to three new playable races, look for an improved multiplayer experience. Rise of Legends is due next month, and you can check out the game's official site for more information.

Gamers will soon be able to see how Heroes of Might & Magic V is turning out...again. The game made headlines earlier this year when some of the franchise's fans partook in an open beta testing and had an unlikely request for the development team--they wanted the game delayed.
Realizing that this was the first M&M game for both Ubisoft and developer Nival Interactive, hardcore fans wanted to make sure the series got the attention they felt it deserved, and they thought Heroes V could use some more time in development.
The grassroots group pulled no punches, saying, "[We] all wish to see more releases in this new world that Ubisoft has created for Might and Magic. However, we also feel that, should you release the game on its currently scheduled release date, all of our dreams will be shattered."
Chalk it up to the "power of the people" or the fact that the Ubisoft brass were thinking the same thing. Either way the fans got what they wanted. The game's release was moved from March to May, and the latest build of the game is ready to make another public appearance.
Ubisoft today announced that the Heroes of Might & Magic V PC demo will be available for download on Thursday, April 13. The demo will include two maps from the Haven and Inferno campaigns, the curiously named 843 YSD: Falcon's last flight single-player map, and the new online duel mode.

There's plenty of evidence that massively multiplayer online games are big in Korea, but it appears Korean MMOGs are catching on in other parts of the world as well.
Japanese Web site RBB Today reports that a recent study found that two of the three most popular online games in Japan--Ragnarok Online and Sukatto Golf Pangya--are Korean in origin. US games--even the blockbuster World of Warcarft--are conspicuously absent from the list, as the third spot went to a domestic effort, Square Enix's Final Fantasy XI.
The study also found that Final Fantasy XI and its Korean competition boast extremely high retention rates in Japan. According to the findings, 27 percent of players who ever picked up Ragnarok Online are still playing it, while Final Fantasy XI and Sukatto Golf Pangya are even stronger, with retention rates of 58 percent and 56 percent respectively.
Readers may remember that Sukatto Golf Pangya is also under development for the Revolution, reinforcing Nintendo's claims of a stronger commitment to online gaming for its next-gen console. PC gaming is still a relatively small niche in Japan, so a console port will have a much larger potential audience to tap for customers.
RBB's article was based on preliminary results from an online gaming study by Media Create, a market research firm focusing on the Japanese game industry. Media Create will release the full study, titled "Online Gaming White Paper 2006," on April 21.

Despite Bungie's claims to the contrary, US magazine Game Informer has declared that its article on Halo: Forerunner is not, in fact, an April Fool's joke.
According to the article, Forerunner will feature "huge persistent worlds" built around a modified Halo 2 engine. It'll also have a co-op mode for up to four players.
A Bungie type dismissed the article as "an April Fool's gag" on the developer's forum - but in its latest issue, Game Informer says it's all true.
And that's not all - the mag is also claiming that Bungie's rumoured 'Project Orion' relates to a special ops team which is looking at the possibility of developing a massively multiplayer Halo game.
Sounds like fun - but is it fact or fiction? Well, looks like we'll just have to wait and see what turns up at E3 now, doesn't it...

If you're as old as we are - or at least as old as we're feeling this morning - you'll probably remember the rather excellent Total Annihilation from Gas Powered Games' supremo Chris Taylor.
Way back in the mists of gaming history, TA was widely considered a total classic and pioneered - or at least brought together - many of the classic RTS features we take for granted today. Although Taylor went on to found Gas Powered Games and moved onto the Dungeon Siege universe, spawning two games and a movie in the process, you always felt that he would someday return to his RTS roots.
Supreme Commander is that game and, as you'll gather from our extensive preview and recent interview with Taylor himself, we think this could be one very special RTS title indeed, recapturing those past TA glories.
Although the game's been kept mostly under wraps for the past year or so, Gas Powered now seems set to reveal a whole lot more. It has unveiled a fresh array of shots this morning to go alongside a newly launched Supreme Commander official website, which really starts to flesh out the game, promising 'one thousand years of unending warfare' as well as breakdowns on the whole SC universe, including planets, units, storyline and why Gas Powered reckons it's the "next evolution of the RTS genre".

We're obviously not playing World of Warcraft enough. Despite our excitement over Blizzard's inclusion of weather effects in the 1.10 update for its MMORPG, we've yet to witness it in action. We've been dutifully hanging around Elwynn Forest waiting for a storm to brew up, but so far, zippo. Maybe if we start beating on drums and perform an arm-flailing rain dance, something will happen. We'll give it a try, and if Azeroth is suddenly swamped by a flood of Biblical proportions, you'll know who to blame.
Anyway, we'll stop waffling now and get to the point: Blizzard has provided first details on the forthcoming 1.11 patch for WoW. What's really only a sneak peek at plans for the update reminds us that it's the Mage that's the World of Warcraft character class receiving an overhaul this time around, talents undergoing a revamp and the developer looking at improvements which "include easing a mage's downtime between fights and opening some new, interesting talent builds through changes to all the mage's talent trees." Wizard.
In addition, in its sneak peek Blizzard has let slip that the 1.11 update will include a new, high level dungeon called Naxxramas. It's a 40-man raid dungeon that will apparently present even the most experienced and powerful players with an epic challenge: "Floating above the Plaguelands, the necropolis known as Naxxramas serves as the seat of one of the Lich King's most powerful officers, the dreaded lich Kel'Thuzad. Horrors of the past and new terrors yet to be unleashed are gathering inside the necropolis as the Lich King's servants prepare their assault. Soon the Scourge will march again..."

Codemasters today reveals the legend behind the sacred Archons that, when secured, will give ultimate power to players in the forthcoming MMO masterpiece, ArchLord.
A new ArchLord trailer movie, 'The Legend of Chantra: Episode II', which explores the legend is now available online at www.archlordgame.com. The trailer movie reveals the importance of the Archons, the holy relics that players must unite in order to become the one supreme ruler of the game's world of Chantra.
The legend, which forms the back-story to ArchLord, tells of an ancient time when two mighty heroes from different races jointly held the Archons, using their power to unite the races. Fearing that the untold power of the Archons may bring death and disaster if they fell into the wrong hands, the heroes kept them safe and hidden. Now, one hundred years later, the legend of the two heroes has faded and the Archons are there to be claimed – if they can be found…
Featuring four minutes of stunning cinematic action, The Legend of Chantra: Episode II movie expands on the legend, the struggle for supremacy that brought death and decay to a once peaceful land and the resurrection of the ArchLord legacy.
ArchLord will be published, exclusively for PC, in North America and Europe by Codemasters Online Gaming in Q3 2006. To see the movie and more, visit the official website today at www.archlordgame.com.

With the traditional E3 aroma of illegal hot dog vendors and bruised feet only a whiff away, its high time that developers started touting their big show titles to the press. First to lay its wares under the E3 spotlight is NCSoft, who has announced a number of games set to star at next month's Los Angeles show.
Tabula Rasa is the first title confirmed for the MMO developer's booth, a unique sci-fi MMORPG from NCsoft's Austin studio, being headed up by former Ultima designers Richard Garriott and Starr Long. The game features some exciting content like dynamic mission instances and voice-chat support, and is definitely one to watch out for when it hits later this year.
Also primed for an E3 appearance is the next chapter in the Guild Wars franchise, although it will apparently be securely hidden behind NCSoft's iron booth doors. Rest assured that if we happen to spy the Guild Wars sequel, we'll sing like drunken canaries across these pages.
A trio of online games finish off NCsoft's luscious E3 booth; Dungeon Runners, a fantasy MMO, Exteel, an online-enabled robot blaster and finally Aion, a big Korean MMO are all set to also debut.
We will of course have a full report from NCsoft's E3 headquarters next month. We're already sleeping in the afternoons to prepare for the jet-lag.

Telecoms startup Vivox has an intriguing vision, and an ambitiously-named product; "Immersion" aims to add voice chat to online games, with both persistent chat for guilds and dynamic chat for instancing. The product also seems to tie together various text-based chat methods, including regular messengers such as Yahoo and AIM as well as in-game chat.
By supplying the (scalable) infrastructure for this service, Vivox hope Immersion will take the burden of providing voice chat away from game manufacturers, while making communication centralised and seamless for players. However, there are already several products that already achieve this -- many guilds have Ventrilo or TeamSpeak servers, while Xfire provides cross-game chatting. Vivox can go either way; it could corner another segment of this fragmented market, or -- if the company manage to deal directly with game developers -- it could become the one-stop-shop communication solution for gamers regardless of their MMO of choice.
It'll be interesting to see which way the company goes; voice chat is certainly billed as the next stage of interactivity with MMOs, with Xbox Live gamers testifying to the added dimensions voice can add to various game genres. A recent press release on Vivox's website points to another direction in which the technology could become useful -- adding voice and centralised communication to online dating and social sites -- but reaching saturation point is going to be a tricky ride.

Acclaim and Indy21 are bringing some Jade Empire-style martial arts action to the PC at the end of the year with the MMORPG 9Dragons -- not to be confused with the abysmal Drake of the 99 Dragons. You'll be able to choose from nine different factions representing diverse fighting techniques such as Shaolin and Wu-Tang.
IGN has two movies demonstrating the Lu-Lin fighting style, and there is additional media at Acclaim's 9Dragons web site.

Glu Mobile, a leading creator and global publisher of mobile entertainment, today announced that Ancient Empires II has won the Mobie for Best Strategy Game for 2005 at the Third Annual Mobile Entertainment Awards presented by CNET Networks Games & Entertainment Held at CTIA WIRELESS 2006. The Mobile Entertainment Awards, better known as the Mobies, recognize excellence in mobile entertainment innovation, design, and technical achievement. Other Glu games recognized by the awards panel were ZumaÒ as runner-up for Best Puzzle Game of 2005, and Marc Ecko's Getting Up as runner-up for Best Action Game of 2005.
A panel of CNET Networks editorial experts chose the 2005 Mobies finalists based on gameplay, aesthetic value, and replay-ability. By providing compelling third-screen entertainment offerings from games, music, and video to access to live events and exclusive content, each winning company is driving consumer demand for mobile entertainment.
"Glu has a track record of creating and publishing some of the best games and entertainment for the mobile phone, and we're thrilled that Ancient Empires II won the Mobie for Best Strategy Game of 2005," said Greg Ballard, president and chief executive officer, Glu Mobile. "We're proud that this award has been given to a Glu original game, especially one which has been critically acclaimed worldwide.
Ancient Empires II is the epic sequel to the award-winning Ancient Empires. The game challenges players to battle alongside King Galamar and control fire-breathing dragons, lethal archers and fearsome wolves as they fight to defend their kingdom. Players choose from a variety of troops, decide on their own battle strategies and can challenge friends with up to 4-player battles in skirmish mode.
The Mobies award comes on the heels of a number of accolades for Ancient Empires II. In February, The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) awarded the game Best Cellular Game of the Year and in January, it was crowned Game of the Year by UK website Mobile Game FAQs. In December it was selected as Best Wireless Strategy Award of 2005 by IGN.com.

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach is loosening its girdle today to accommodate Dragon's Vault, the first module - or expansion content - to be released by Turbine for its MMORPG.
Available now, unless a comet suddenly strikes the Earth and our world explodes in a violent eruption of gas, mud and rock, the module is the first in a series of such expansions planned by the developer. A freebie for D&D Online subscribers, Dragon's Vault boasts 15 dungeons, introduces a new large-scale raid feature and stars a red dragon that'll serve bits of players' charred arse back to them on a plate.
No news yet on when the next module will materialise, but judging by the fairly rapid appearance of Dragon's Vault following D&D Online's release, it might not be a million moons away.

The Creative Assembly's working on an expansion pack for Rome: Total War called Alexander, according to PC Zone, and it'll be released through a digital distribution service when it's finished.
Alexander will span the years from the death of Philip II of Macedon in 336BC to the great warmonger's own clog-popping, says Zone, with six historical battles that highlight his biggest fights, multiplayer and four new factions.
Those are Alexander's Macedonian army, The Persians, The Indians and the Barbarians, with 50 or so new units included in total and - as Zone rightly points out, brilliantly - Brian Blessed doing the job of game narrator.
We'll let you know when we hear more.

Blizzard is letting rip with new European game realms for its World of Warcraft MMORPG, thanks to the opening of a new site located in the territory which will host "multiple game realms in English, French and German".
Eight new realms are launching today (they may have in fact launched by the time you read this), with Blizzard stating that additional realms will be opened up soon. The new realms will cover all playing style bases, with player-versus-player, role-playing player-versus-player, player-versus-environment and role-playing realms available in each language.
So it says here, the opening of the new World of Warcraft site follows ongoing upgrades in hardware and software of the existing game infrastructure to accommodate the growing European player base. In addition, as part of its ongoing plans to improve and expand the game infrastructure in Europe, Blizzard will announce the opening of a further new site in the near future.
"The new site will allow us to provide a smoother, more satisfying game experience and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players in Europe for their continued support and patience whilst we brought this new site to fruition," is the word on current realm expansion from Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment.
Blizzard opening new realms means that orc peons are shortly to re-supply games emporiums with new copies of World of Warcraft. Apparently, a hold had been put on shipments in the past weeks to "avoid increasing the load on the existing realms". The orc peons were naturally quite happy about this as it meant they could spend a few days free of getting hit with a very large stick. Sorry fellas, but it's more work for you.
In related news, Blizzard has released new screenshots from WoW expansion The Burning Crusade. We've uploaded them here for your viewing pleasure (actually, we only think one out of the three is of any cop, but don't tell anyone we said that).

Sierra Entertainment will release World in ConflictTM, a PC strategy game that delivers intense action and coordinated team play amidst the war the world feared most – an apocalyptic showdown between the Soviet Union and the United States. Developed by Massive Entertainment, World in Conflict represents the next generation of strategy games, with completely destructible 3D battlefields, aggressive team-based multiplayer action and a focus on fast, hard-hitting battles. The game is expected to ship in Spring 2007.
"World in Conflict will take strategy games in a new, exciting direction, narrowing the gameplay focus on the best part – the intense action of modern warfare – and challenges gamers to work together to defeat the most powerful armies the world has ever seen," said Cindy Cook, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer for VU Games. "Massive Entertainment's critically acclaimed Ground Control® series represented landmark advances in 3D technology. World in Conflict will continue that legacy and bring the strategy genre to the next generation."
World in Conflict presents a chillingly authentic Cold War scenario where the Berlin Wall never fell. Created by Cold War authority and best-selling author Larry Bond, the story begins in 1989 as the Soviets, fearing certain collapse, boldly advance into Europe. NATO responds in force only to be met on a second front -- a full-fledged invasion of the American homeland. Players take on the role of field commander, leading the era's most powerful military machines in the campaign to retake America's cities and suburbs.
"With World in Conflict, our focus has been to create the maximum number of tactical choices, climactic battles and other game-shifting events that occur during each scenario or multiplayer match," said Martin Walfisz, Founder and CEO of Massive Entertainment. "We've done this through a focus on the one thing people love most about strategy gaming – the combat."
Features in World in Conflict include:
Super-Powered Warfare: Unleash the arsenals of the great military superpowers in the gripping single-player story created by Larry Bond
Bleeding-Edge Graphics – The latest version of Massive's proprietary Masstech engine allows for a full 360° range of camera control and features advanced lighting and physics effects
Complete Destructibility – As the battle rages, the world environment pays the price -- every object in the game will crumble under the force of war, including cars, buildings and forests
Deep Multiplayer Modes: Using Massive's proprietary Massgate multiplayer server system, World in Conflict will support up to 16 players for head-to-head, team-based battles
Real World Units: Players will take control of the most devastating arsenal of military weaponry ever created, including Soviet, American and NATO tanks, planes, trucks, troops and helicopters as well as nuclear weapons
Player Roles – Players will choose to play as Infantry, Armor, Support Forces, or Aerial specialists; multiplayer teams will need to master each role for maximum effectiveness
World in Conflict is expected to ship in Spring 2007 for personal computer. For more information about World in Conflict, please visit the game's official Web site at www.worldinconflict.com.

April 3rd, 2006, 16:50 Posted By: wraggster
Ensemble Studios, the powerhouse RTS developer behind the Age of Empires series has revealed a new direction for future titles, saying its going to be concentrating on the world of MMO and also branching out into the previously unexplored world of console gaming.
It was a move which was first hinted at in our interview with Ensemble's Bruce Shelley last year, but speaking in an interview with Next-Gen.biz, Ensemble's Executive Patrick Hudson said of the MMO market, "It's always been a risky kind of market to look at, and then you see WoW come out, and turn the industry on its head, and you start to re-evaluate."
However while a new MMO is certainly a target and the company already has a prototype, Hudson adds, "We haven't settled on anything, it's safe to say we won't be chasing the fantasy genre. It seems like there are so many coming out. [We're] still pretty far out from even thinking of taking that prototype to a greenlight phase."
However while Ensemble has traditionally been a PC developer, it certainly will be branching out onto next generation consoles, having solved some of the major control issues which have always been seen as a real barrier. Ensemble's CEO Tony Goodman said, "We're giving RTS games on the console a shot, we actually spent a whole year just trying to reconstruct how the controls would work on an RTS game."
"Because we wanted to focus on just controls alone, we just took a straight port of Age of Empires and worked on that first. Now, the game we're doing for our console has a lot of different gameplay elements, too."
Now Goodman believes Ensemble has cracked the central control issue saying: "Yeah, and we got there. Our gamepad people could beat our mouse people. The last thing we wanted was to start on a game before we solved that problem. We put in so much time, and effort, and made a series of little breakthroughs, and got it."
So looks like we might have to add MMORTS to our list of MMO acronyms and, with Ensemble at the helm, we look forward to some interesting developments. Ensemble certainly seems to have invested a lot of time and effort into honing that interface and, with a wealth of PC experience behind it, we could well be in for an intriguing new online genre on next-gen. We'll keep you updated as we hear more.
