Well its not quite that simple really or is it? it seems Sega only copyrighted up to last year, in a quote from an email:
'At this time, Sega no longer recognizes the GiriGiri emulator. The GiriGiri team author Shinya Miyamoto is the original Copyright holder of 2001. After he left the project and Sega took over, the emulator was short lived. Sega took over the copyrights up to 2003 and never renewed them after the theft of the unlock code to the commercial release and the project was canned.
Sega does not have any future plans for GiriGiri at this time, and as you point out, the recent take over of Sega, will not likely even consider emulation, as Sammy will be focusing on arcade systems.'
You can read the full mail at emufanatics here in light of this theres people working on reverse engineering it and making it open source, will this be the start of free & legal Saturn emulation with which you can play games? time will tell

Haze (a mamedev for those that dont follow it) is taking a break so updates may be slow or not around for a little bit. Why does this concern us you ask? well in this thread over at the MAME site theres several people blaming the recent Chanka partly or wholey for this, it seems he got many emails asking or rather demanding that Naomi emulation be worked into MAME on the back of the news that Chanka will be supporting them at some point

Some news i found over at Emufanatics [br][br] garrofi, author of the Dreamcast emulator Chankast, posted the following over at EmuTalk:[br][br]chanka's members together with MAMEDEV dumper "The Guru" http://unemulated.emuunlim.com/ are working on naomi emulation, but we are getting that error which means the serial ID is missing from the emulation and to get it we need to dump the smt eeprom, so we need $$ to buy equipment to dump the missing Serial ID held in the surface-mounted EEPROM and once we hook up that data, it should boot further [br][br]if anyone can help, dc@chanka.org[br]Garrofi [br][br]I was also given permission to post another video I recorded of Chankast, this time running the NAOMI BIOS!

Elsemi of Dreamer Fame (an older Dreamcast Emu for windows) has released a VMS Browser for the Chankast Emulator, heres a description from the read me.txt.[br][br] VMSBrowser is a tool that will open Chankast VMS.BIN files that store the backup data from[br]an emulated Dreamcast VMU. With this tool you can see the files stored inside the memory. [br][br]Download from our Chankast Page [br][br]This release makes you wonder if a Homebrew archive of saves might be a good idea?

Some news from Garrofi himself:[br][br] Hi, I am garrofi, one of the chankast author. [br][br]I think I am not very popular right now [br][br]You can use -file:filename.bin or -file:data.iso to load an application. I use it to test kos examples in chankast. [br][br]Starsdemo.iso works and a lot of kos examples. I would like to improve net-bsd compatibility, but after reading some comentaries about us, I don't feel like doing it. [br][br]btw, I don't have emulated #trap opcode and a lot of homebrew apps use it. [br][br]Garrofi [br][br]As i told Garrofi last night in IRC (efnet #dcemu) we really do appreciate the very hard work he and the other members of his team have put into Chankast, obviously we as a scene will be much happier when it supports Homebrew more but its an excellent emulator.[br][br]If anyone can try these instructions and post news/screenshots please tell us in our DCEmus for PC forum.

There have been reports that legal software does not work with Chanka at all in this stage of development and since CD or DVD drives can't read GD ROMs it seems that there's no legal use for Chanka or a possiblity to help out with testing if you wanna help its evolution.[br][br]But that might not be correct: There are several releases that use CDs instead of GDs and that makes them testable with Chanka. [br][br]Feet of Fury[br]Bleem!cast for Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3[br]Inhabitants[br]Maquipai[br]several apps like VCD and MP3 player[br][br]az_bont posted this statement some time ago:[br][br]"A quick scan of DCHomebrew.org reveals 69 original brews, 56 ported brews, 35 software brews, 3 brew loaders and 49 demo brews, totalling a massive 212 pieces of homebrew code available for download on that one site. And that's not even taking the countless KOS examples. [br][br]We've already heard examples of several pieces of homebrew running, and that's just from a few people checking a handful of stuff each. There are probably dozens of pieces of homebrew for the Dreamcast playable on this emulator."[br][br]One game that has been reported to work by Vorrtexx is Battery by Jimbo, but there might be a lot more... So let's collect some reports on those releases and reopen DCEmu's Chanka compatibility list.[br][br]The next release of Chanka hopefully will allow the developers that are working on software for our beloved Dreamcast to use Chanka as a development tool.[br][br]A full list with complete bug reports will help the authors of Chanka to improve this impressive emulator in the future.[br][br]

The first Dreamcast emulator that screenshots were posted of but never released was Icarusand today at BooB!s forums CyRus64 posted these few bits on the Boob! Forums [br][br] Firstly Icarus is obviously not fake. Its very true that a commercial game was running over 2 years ago. Sadly my life has been mostly on hold since then, and I agree it is very disappointing no release has been made.[br][br]However you have of course got Chanka now which is good news for those of you in the wait - and do of course note that a lot of help has been provided by Zezu, Ector, and Felix to this project, so its not as if Icarus has had no impact on other emus.[br][br]The fact is in one's life, you do have to prioritise and getting a degree is kind of important. There is work going on with Icarus, and my exams are finishing soon... I really do hope to make a release as soon as possible (perhaps the summer but lets see how things go).[br][br]Chanka is great and since it is out there, there aren't any real obstacles for an Icarus release anymore.[br][br]It does disappoint me when people describe Icarus as a sad story - yes it is sad it hasnt been released, and maybe an early release was a good idea in retrespect, since ever since expectations have grown. However I would like to reiterate that when Icarus was started very little was known about the dc and thus the reverse engineering was that much more demanding. Chanka is excellent, and has in part been aided by experience / knowledge gained from Icarus, so in this sense Icarus isnt overall a sad thing imo.[br][br]Understand that in the emu scenes a lot of collaboration occurs, and so you cant necessarily treat them as totally distinct projects. [br][br]also this:[br][br] Depends how things go... by what ector says it is pretty fast now but since chanka has sound we'd probably need to get that working too and compat to sort out. [br][br]and finally this [br][br] I believe Crazy Taxi is near full-speed (but I dont know since I havent played with newest Icarus due to exams), presumably on a ~2ghz comp.[br]I'll let you know post-thursday [br][br]Well sound isnt too much of a problem since there have been some new docs around recently (which sadly we didnt have for the last 3 yrs! so things are more doable a bit more quickly now. Chanka guys have ector's gfx code already, so im sure if we have probs with it we can always get some help in return if needed . [br][br]Nice to hear from the Icarus Team once more.
