Actor Billy Dee Williams joins Michael Ironside for C&C3's celebrity line-up
"This is the most fun I've had since Star Wars!", exclaims Billy Dee Williams about his involvement in the high-definition, live action video sequences being filmed for forthcoming RTS Command & Conquer 3.
The actor famous for portraying Lando Calrissian in Star Wars movies The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi is joined by fellow thesp Michael Ironside (who, according to our own Andy Robinson, is "F****** brilliant!"), Tricia Helfer, Josh Holloway, Grace Park, Ivana Bozilovic and Shauntay Hinton for C&C3's video sequences.
Williams will be playing GDI Director Redmond Boyle, a character who has "more depth than I expected from a video game personality", explains the former Star Wars star. "His polished exterior gradually breaks down as the world is plunged into chaos and he eventually shows his true nature under extreme pressure."
An enthusiastic executive producer Mike Verdu is thrilled about the cast line-up. "Telling a story with a mix of live action and high-end movie-quality computer graphics has been one of the hallmarks of the Command & Conquer (C&C) series. I am delighted that we are bringing the rich game world and epic story for C&C 3 to life with an amazing cast and stunning CG effects - and I can't wait for gamers to see the results. These very talented actors have added tremendous depth and dimension to the C&C 3 game experience",
In addition to the above acting talent, real-life news reporters John Huck, anchor of the FOX affiliate in Las Vegas and Shanon Cook, freelance reporter for a major news network, will be assuming the roles of anchors and field reporters bringing the world the latest news on the third Tiberium War. And of course, Joe Kucan is reprising his role as Kane, leader of the Brotherhood of Nod.

Combat goodness revealed in new screens as the GDI faces down the Nod
It's time for a little eyeball entertainment! New Command & Conquer 3 screenshots have been deployed, and we reckon it's all looking pretty swish with the screenshots promising plenty of combat tastiness in the latest from the veteran RTS series. But pass mince pies over the media yourself to see what you think - and feel free to unleash your opinions in the comments field below.
C&C3 is due out next year and finds the Global Defense Initiative battling Kane and his Brotherhood of Nod bad boys on a near-future Earth infested with Tiberium.

Holy pointed incisors batkids, that's a LOT of Skaven! Feast those mince pies on big Warhammer fights in this new Mark of Chaos trailer. We've also thrown in some screenshots that you may not have seen before too.
We dreamed of having the bank balance to allow us to deploy this many units on the battlefield when we dabbled with the Warhammer tabletop game in our youth, but we can now do it ALL at the cost of a PC game thanks to the RTS title.
Based, of course, on Games Workshop's fantasy-battle spectacular, Mark of Chaos marches out next month. Keep 'em peeled for a hands-on preview hitting these pages shortly.

For millions of PC gamers around the globe, the world in which they live is not nearly as big as it should be. Of course the world in which they live is Azeroth, the fictional realm of World of Warcraft.
Fortunately for those gamers, the world of World of Warcraft will be expanding--but not until later this year. The Burning Crusade expansion introduces several new features to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game, including the new stomping grounds known as Outland. Though most won't get an opportunity to explore the new turn until The Burning Crusade hits shelves in November, a few lucky citizens of Azeroth are roaming the new area now.
The beta test for The Burning Crusade is now under way, running on two servers. Though Blizzard Entertainment would not disclose how many people are involved in the beta, GameSpot editors who are participating noticed that one of the two servers was already very highly populated.
E-mail invitations were sent out to select gamers who were able to register, either by attending Blizzcon or qualifying through various contests. Those who haven't been awarded a key to the beta shouldn't fret just yet. A Blizzard representative told GameSpot that invitations would be sent out in waves, with players being added to the beta incrementally as testing continues.
The game's alpha testing has been underway since August, with friends and family of Blizzard employees contributing.

Codemasters' RTS title Maelstrom has been delayed from late 2006 to February 2007. According to the publisher, the game has been afforded further development time in order "to realize the game's ambitious design".
Sad news, perhaps, for any generals eager to wage blazing war across a future Earth struck by ecological meltdown, but a metaphorical hanky has been offered to wipe away any tears in the shape of new screenshots and campaign details. Actually, looking at the new screenshots, we begin to understand why the extra development time is required...
Just in case you were unaware, Maelstrom features three major factions turning Earth's surface to a battle-scarred mess - the Remnants (guerrilla freedom-fighters), the Ascension (technologically advanced chaps) and the Hai-Genti (an aquatic alien race). Each faction boasts its own campaign and a fourth and final campaign will provide the climatic ending to the showdown. Anyway, here's more direct from the horse's mouth...
THE REMNANT CAMPAIGN
In the first campaign players command the Remnants, a faction of hardened ex-military personnel and scattered survivors that have banded together to oppose the Ascension and battle for the freedom of the planet. A resourceful faction, they are able to quickly recruit troops, modify old U.S. military vehicles and capture technologies from the Ascension, such as terraforming. The campaign is a continual battle for survival against the Ascension forces, as their struggle continues a new threat emerges that threatens the very survival of all mankind.
THE ASCENSION CAMPAIGN
Players will switch to take charge of the technology-rich Ascension forces in the second campaign and, while battling the Remnants, quickly learn of the threat from the Hai-Genti alien race. Now a battle on two fronts, the Ascension utilize devastating technology, including the powerful mechamorph technology that enables buildings and vehicles to transform for different functions; such as attack buggies that morph into fixed emplacement guns or tanks that convert into bomber planes.
Other technologies at their disposal include terraforming, high-powered lasers and cryogen (freeze) guns. As the campaign progresses, Arlan Khan, the Ascension leader, becomes continually obsessed with studying the alien creatures, which leads to drastic consequences.
THE HAI-GENTI CAMPAIGN
In the third campaign players take the reigns of the alien Hai-Genti race. To them the Earth is a resourceful planet that has been virtually destroyed by the human animals, thus they are determined to exterminate all human life and transform the planet into an aquatic paradise. Their main goal is to flood environments and pump the water full of mutagen; a nutrient rich substance to the Hai-Genti, but a deadly poison to humans.
The Hai-Genti do not have typical weapons but use genetic engineering to create formidable creatures capable of tearing through the human forces. Their command over the elements also enables them to summon tornados, call down meteor attacks from space or flood to engulf their enemies. However, as the Hai-Genti begin their colonization of the planet, the intelligence and cunning of its human inhabitants should not be under estimated.

Blue Byte and Ubisoft are working on a sixth instalment in the veteran strategy series, Settlers, the developer and publisher have revealed today.
The latest series entry is due out next year and is currently (very creatively) called Settlers VI, apparently having been in development since last spring. The latest instalment in the city building series aims to be the most graphically pleasing yet, while expanding in ways to gain universal appeal.
"Our development studio in Düsseldorf has a clear goal for The Settlers VI: to produce the best The Settlers game of all time," said Odile Limpach, Managing Director of Ubisoft Germany and Austria. "We want to appeal to fans of The Settlers series while ensuring the greatest possible accessibility to newcomers."
The latest edition of Settlers, a 10th anniversary update to Settlers II, is in shops now. We'll let you know when more word on the sixth instalment reaches our ears.

EA's The Battle for Middle-earth II was a commendable strategy outing on PC and even played surprisingly well in its 360 incarnation, bringing even more of Peter Jackson's big screen battle magic to armchair generals looking to defeat the hordes of Mordor or even stick it to those pansy Fellowship types.
Well now a new power is stirring in the land and it's The Rise of the Witch King, the new expansion pack for Middle-earth II which lets you explore your thoroughly evil side as you chart the dark lord of Angmar's rise to power and the invasion of the kingdom of Arnor, home of Aragorn's illustrious ancestors. A brand new single-player faction and campaign, new units for existing factions and the addition of Angmar to skirmish, multiplayer and War of the Ring modes are all included and these six new screens should give you a welcome taster of the delights to come, allowing you to fully embrace your inner ring wraith.
Battle for Middle-earth II: The Rise of the Witch King is set to debut on PC before the end of the year, no dispatches on whether a 360 version is planned though.

LucasArts has moved to spice up your Friday with a bit of corruption. No, it's not forgetting to tell you about the sexually explicit MSN conversations it had with pages; it's releasing a demo of the new Star Wars: Empire At War expansion.
Forces of Corruption it's called, for which our first paragraph offers its thanks, and on the demo front what you've got is 605MBs worth of combined mission and tutorial level, which sees you attempting to corrupt Mandalore and establish a black market on Nal Hutta.
The full game, developed by Empire At War's Petroglyph, will see you take on the role of an aspiring underworld figure, taking advantage of the confusion/barbecue that followed the Rebels' destruction of the Death Star. Plus it'll have customisable and upgradeable bases and guerrilla warfare since, though it might not sound like it, Forces of Corruption remains firmly in the real-time strategy genre.
Look forward to its release later this year.

According to a press release from Turbine Entertainment, the MMO maker is partnering with China's CDC Games to bring Lord of the Rings Online: The Shadows of Angmar to Chinese gamers -- a market with a strong affinity for online fantasy games. Turbine has already experienced success with Dungeons & Dragons Online in China and Japan, thanks to some effective content localization, and CDC will use a similar strategy by giving Middle-earth a distinctly Asian makeover. I hope this just means substituting tofu and rice for lembas bread, and not giving Gandalf a Fu Manchu moustache.

Speaking at the London Games Summit this morning, Webzen America CEO Cindy Armstrong has predicted that consoles will overtake PCs in the MMOG market within the next decade.
She quoted figures from DFC Intelligence which forecast that US online game revenues generated from subscriptions, advertising and digital downloads will reach US$4.7 billion by 2011.
Armstrong believes that PC games will continue to dominate the market in Asia, but when it comes to the US and Europe, "By 2015 you're going to see more money generated off console than PC, because these countries are console countries."
She went on to highlight the importance of entering new markets such as India and Vietnam - where 100,000 people concurrently play Webzen title Mu.
Inevitably, as she herself observed, Armstrong's speech touched on World of Warcraft - which she concedes "was really the exceptional product that expanded everything".
However, Armstrong said she disagrees with recent suggestions made by THQ CEO Brian Farrell that it would be "misguided" to even attempt to compete with WOW in the current market.
"The key is being innovative," Armstrong argued. "Don't try to recreate World of Warcraft, you're not going to do it. Do something new."
One way in which to do something new, she continued, is to look at the console MMO market rather than focusing exclusively on PC gaming. "Console's a huge opportunity, and that's where I think we're going to see huge growth in both the US and Europe," Armstrong said, adding that "75 to 80 per cent" of the market for forthcoming Webzen titles Huxley and All Points Bulletin will be the US and Europe.

In Comedy Central's teaser commercials for the first of a new batch of South Park episodes, the series' four main characters--elementary school kids Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny--gaze slack-jawed at computer screens, morbidly obese and riddled with zits. While the portrayal is a bit of a caricature of the typical massively multiplayer online role-playing game addict, it doesn't take a genius to guess that the show is turning its gaze toward the genre and its current standard-bearer, World of Warcraft.
That guess has been confirmed by the official World of Warcraft Web site, which proclaims that the MMORPG will be featured in the first episode of the 10th season. (It's actually the eighth episode of the season, as Comedy Central ran the first seven episodes this spring, then took a break before showing the rest this fall.)
This is not the first time South Park has dealt with the world of gaming. The boys previously got caught up in the Chinpokomon craze and went to great extremes to reclaim their stolen Okama GameSphere. Kenny even camped out to get a PlayStation Portable on launch day, then used the system to decide an eons-long war between the forces of light and darkness.
The first episode of the season's back half, "Make Love not Warcraft," will premiere this Wednesday, October 4, at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time.

Seed, an MMOG attempting to bring something a little more unique to the genre by eschewing combat and focussing heavily on role-play, story and characterisation, is shutting down.
In a letter to the community posted on the official website for the game, Seed developer Runestone has revealed it's had to file for bankruptcy.
"For the past two months, I and a few others have attempted to sell a partnership deal to a long list of publishers and MMO companies, trying to raise the capital we needed to finish the game properly, and re-launch it in a form it, and especially you the community, deserve. While we have received a great deal of interest, we have not been able to close a deal. The harsh reality is that we have now officially run out of money, and out of options, and therefore, we cannot pay salaries, rent or hosting fees", Runestone CEO Lars Kroll Kristensen has stated.
He continued: "...it means that the dream of Seed and Runestone is over. It has been a wild, weird ride, full of frustration, triumph, joy, stress and fun, but never boredom. We have all learned incredibly much about game development, the gaming business and MMOs."
Kristensen has added that, for Seed players, it means "you will only be able to play Seed for a very limited time. We will have a little "goodbye" ceremony this Sunday at 20 CEST. I will be there, in the garden, as Magellan. He was the first character online, and he will be the last. I hope some of you guys will be there too, even if the occasion is sad. After that day, the servers may be less stable and reliable, and AD GMs will only be online on their own free time, if at all. Same goes for Runestone Staff."
In the end, he says toward the bottom of the letter, Runestone "simply tried to do too much, with too few funds". However, Seed's fate doesn't appear to have dampened Kristensen's enthusiasm for a non-combat, role play-centric MMO.
"I, for one, would do it all over again, although I would do a great many things differently next time around," he explained. "I am still fully convinced that a role play-centric game is not only a good idea: It's a great idea. It just needs to be better executed. Seed has many of the right qualities for such a game, and I still firmly believe that, given sufficient funding, we could have created a great game. Unfortunately, we will never know."

There's been a huge amount of excitement surround Relic's Company of Heroes ever since it was first revealed. Since then, it has gone on to win countless industry awards, all indicating that it would eventually become one of the finest strategy titles, PC games and WWII experiences, to-date.
A few short weeks ahead of its release and reviews have given further weight to these expectations. PC Gamer described it as 'the finest RTS we have ever played' and PC Zone remarked that it is 'nothing short of brilliant'. And the praise is continuing its relentless advance as the downloadable demo circulates internationally.
Aesthetically, the visuals, audio and overall presentation are quite astonishing.
